Remi Gauvin - The Inaugural Pinkbike Hot Lap

Aug 9, 2017 at 16:35
by Pinkbike Originals

The Pinkbike Hot Lap is our own fun leaderboard of pros and bike industry friends. Riders put their best foot forward down a trail local to Pinkbike HQ and their time is recorded with a Freelap timing system.

Remi Gauvin is the first rider to take on the challenge and post a time for the Pinkbike Hot Lap. We capture everything involved in him putting in a fast time: the bike, the rider, and the track conditions—the riders will even talk you through some of their line choices and why they selected them.

Destroying

The Track

The trail used is called Credit Line. This was chosen as we consider it to be a pretty complete mountain bike trail that tests various riders' skills. Conditions during our first Hot Lap with Remi were far from ideal, with super dry and loose conditions on hand, in addition to poor air-quality thanks to the worst wildfires in B.C. in decades.

 How bout PB Mtb star in a reasonably priced bike hot lap?
  • 8 0
 Oh great idea, but i guess the pro's contracts with their bike brands will not allow this.
  • 3 0
 I like the idea, but I think it would be hard to follow through with it.
  • 9 0
 @MSVF: I didn't see any issues with F1 drivers driving a pile. Lets see what they can do on the latest Huffy Smile
  • 16 0
 This idea did come up, but there are so many variables (namely on sizing) that it just wouldn't work for everyone.
  • 31 5
 A star on an Ellsworth would be a thing...
  • 4 1
 @paulhaysom: If the bike in question was actually reasonably priced (Calibre Bossnut V2) you could have different sizes available, i'm sure they would donate some..
  • 2 1
 GMBN can produce it on a Canyon bike, maybe.
  • 2 1
 @paulhaysom: fix that by making it a 16" Close them wheel size debates for good......
  • 4 0
 @WAKIdesigns: You mean Brian Lopes?
  • 1 0
 how about racer on a modern speced 2005 hardtail
  • 3 0
 @paulhaysom: I understand those logistical challenges but what you can do is keep some simple stats. Rider name/height/weight/age. Bike year/make/model/wheel size. Put it on a running chart you post with each Hot Lap run. The PB Leader Board as it were.

This will also throw gas on the fires of several other flaming topics for comment section fun. But mostly to give some context to the results.

 @iammarkstewart: Not sure if the point is to determine who is the fastest rider or what is the fastest bike... I think it's about having fun making the show and having fun watching it... quite frankly if someone bought a car based on Top Gear review... please kill yourself. Sort out the post mortum, will and sht, and... kill yourself... you are ruining it for everybody. If someone is genuinely interested in stats, then please make research yourself, deal with your disease on your own.

I personally watch it just to see a fast dude ride and maybe toss in a joke or two, get excited if he got faster or not. I don't give a flying sht how he got faster, what wheelsize or shock stroke he was one. I don't give a rolling donut... Because I have no clue how can anyone suspect this thing to be "scientific". It is entertainment No1, No2 and maybe a time trial No3.

If you want to gather up a bunch of German rocket scientists around the track with humidit sensors and strap cables to your bike with laptop in the backpack, please make a show like that and I will push subscribe. I will,-
It will prove NOTHING, but i will subscribe. But not here. Please...

 @WAKIdesigns: from 2.30, it's for you vimeo.com/86739965
  • 2 0
 @WAKIdesigns: Nicely over the top as usual.

I didn't say I wanted scientific, I just suggested context. I'm not ruining anything for anyone because I'm not running the Hot Laps PB show. I also didn't say I wasn't in it for the fun and entertainment of it.

Your point makes more sense if they're all riding the same bike. I was just looking for other reference points because they're not. I only asked for a few things, not your science cadre sensoring the the track.

Probably won't be killing myself over any of this...

 Nice! Now we need a guy in a white full face with dark goggles to ride all the new bikes for time comparisons...maybe call him The Stig?
  • 5 5
 How about 'The Alien'? And that is a hint to whom PB should use.
  • 7 5
 @iamamodel: yea and he'd show up on an E-bike Big Grin Get Barell. They'd call him, hello Fabien can you ride on our track to try to set the record? Yes! Absolimeaunt! One YEAR! - next thing you know, he moves to BC and trains almost every day. And a new lines pop up all around the place... Big Grin

 I hear the ST1G is Swiss
  • 30 1
 Some say this concept has been done before, and that the main presenter got sacked for snotting someone. All we know is, its called the PB Hot Lap
  • 27 0
 Reminds me of the Dirt 1.04
  • 6 0
 bastard, I was gunna say that! Prove I'm old too....
  • 3 6
 @ColquhounerHooner: One of ultimate proofs that you are old is when you make South Park reference and nobody on the forum gets it...
  • 4 4
 exaclty...
  • 3 0
 Was going to say the same thing! That was my favourite feature in any MTB magazine ever!
  • 3 0
 @WAKIdesigns: I thought that suck my balls comment on another thread was probably South Park related, what can I say, apart from screw you Waki, I'm goin' home!
  • 2 0
 @eblackwell: Remember the time Sam Hill smoked everyone on that track? The 1.04 was like Strava, but back when cell phones still folded in half.

 I wanna see all the usual posters in the comments sections take part. Waki... and all you other bastards, you know who you are
  • 10 0
 Oh and all the PB staff too
  • 7 8
 No way I'm the Stig...
  • 4 0
 @WAKIdesigns: You've got the right flag.
  • 4 0
 Great idea PB!!!

Yeah!!!! Book me a flight :-)

I'd like to see some DJ guys against the pro enduro and DH ones. I really hope this idea lasts! Riding with some of them, they would likely give the others a run for their money!
  • 9 5
 I'd love to do that but I don't think I'm worthy Big Grin But that would be a great motivation to finally learn to ride... On another hand, make a 20ft, hipped double in there and 99.9% of Pinkbike audience is out of the game.
  • 1 0
 @WAKIdesigns: I'd have a go! :-)
  • 1 0
 I'm in
  • 1 0
 @WAKIdesigns: first double ever jump I attempted was a 15 fter. Needless to say I ate s#*t and am now practicing on tables...
  • 2 2
 @twelvemonths: i did a few 20ft tables in my life. You still won't see me jumping a hipped table top of that size, especially one with steeper take off.
  • 2 0
 @WAKIdesigns: um, but the Stig is actually fast!
  • 20 0
 Awesome! This is the type of content we need more of! It's really interesting to see line choice and bike check
  • 1 0
 Agreed!!
  • 15 0
 Lars Sternberg, Bryn Atkinson, Brett Tippie, Simon Lawton, Mark Weir, Yohan Barelli, Jeff Kendall Weed, Wade Simmons, Kurt Voreis, the pinkbike staff, the bikemag staff (Seb Kemp whether or not he is currently bikemag staff), Brian Lopes (....nevermind), also Jill Kitner, Casey Brown.....thats a good start.
  • 2 0
 Anne Caro, Finn, Rogatkin, Wilmer, Claudio
  • 1 1
 Weird selection. Mostly retired or semi retired pros?
  • 5 1
 @russthedog: looks like he listed anyone living in or around the PNW that is in close enough proximity to participate.

Vanderham, Malamed, A.Hestler, Spencer Paxson, Kovarik, Carlson, Strobel, Remy.M, A.Craig, Bas.Van,
  • 2 3
 Why the Lopes hate?
  • 1 0
 Yep, and Robbie Miranda on the cop bike.
  • 1 0
 Nino Schurter and one of the top XCO women, probably Emily Batty. Sure they won't be as fast as pro DHers, but they'll smash some of the other people suggested above and below.
  • 3 0
 @mtnbykr05: ...Kabush
  • 15 1
 I want to see Vernon Felton on that trail with a stick and a cord holding a bottle of Loctite in front of him to make him chase it. Wink
  • 10 0
 Awesome idea! I'd like to see Josh Bryceland or even Richie Rude for the men. And Isabeau Courdurier or Casey Brown for the women.
  • 9 0
 The youtube bois. Phil, BKXC, Seth, Simpletrack, Alex Chamberlain, TrailPeek. They are not gonna put out comparable times to the pros but it would just be nice to see what the difference is.
  • 2 1
 forgot about me MTBscotland ha ha ha ha
  • 7 0
 I'd like to see how top pros from different disciplines match up. So a few top 10 racers from DH, enduro and CX circuits. And maybe even road racers with some off-road experience like Sagan and Stybar, that would be cool though I am not too sure their employers would be very enthusiastic.
  • 2 0
 And xco plus McAskill
  • 8 1
 The idea is great! Here's what I would add:

- gimball for POV;
- HUD overlay with speed, minimap maybe comparison with best time;
- funny commentary ,Claudio/ Ozzy Man / Top Gear style;
- some supporters on the side, picked from PB members (from contests, drafts, etc.);
- other views in key positions of the track;
- some cheesy replays;
- provide also the raw version, so viewers can choose.

 this!

 About the only thing I have in common with that guy is a Rocky Mountain and some heavy breathing! Nice work Remi! You were flying!
  • 7 1
 I like the idea of this. How about Peaty, Ratboy, Sam Hill, Cedric Gracia, T-Mo and Hans no-way Rey.
  • 6 1
 Have the editors at Pinkbike do it too! RC, Kazimer, etc, and then literally everyone else you can. This is an AWESOME idea. Lol
  • 4 1
 So a pro line is like a Strava line but people don't get cross at it. I get it now! All that time I thought I was being a tool I'm actually being like a pro! Awesome!

(P.s. There is a lot of sarcasm in this post)
  • 6 0
 Really nice idea, neatly done.
  • 6 0

  • 5 0
 SAM HILL all the way

 Brycland, Tippie, M Gatto, Jordy Lunn, Gwin and Berellli. Finn would be cool. Famous people would be fun. Ken Block, Pastrana, Jerrod Leto, Kevin Spacey

 Is Rémi Gauvin a french man who speaks english pretty well with a correct accent, or is he an anglo-saxon with a french name???
  • 1 0
 Canada's got a load of these people with French names but no French tongue. Cross polenization between the American and French speaking populations I guess... A bit like in Belgium and Holland.
  • 3 1

 Remy is a beast and I don't mean to distract from his limelight, but I'm questioning your motivation, Pinkbike, for the clip at 1:38....seems in poor taste to compare riding ability?
