Renthal 1XR Chainring - Review

Pinkbike presented an in-depth look at the Renthal 1XR chainring back in April 2015, when it was launched. Presently, five sizes are available in even numbers from 30 to 38 teeth, but only in the most popular 104mm bolt circle diameter (BCD). (Renthal mentioned that they have just started to ship SRAM 94mm BCD options and that a Shimano friendly, 96mm BCD chainring will soon follow.) The gold finish is actually a hard anodized coating which, in conjunction with some clever machining of the tooth profiles, is claimed to provide best in class wear resistance and mud clearing. Renthal claims that you will never drop a chain from 1XR chainring, a theory that I have been testing for six months

1XR Details.

• Alternating, 1.8 and 3.5mm width teeth to reduce wear at extreme chain angles
• CNC machined, 7075 T6 Aluminum
• Hard anodized surface finish
• Mud clearing grooves in the tooth bed
• Ultra stiff, I-Beam cross section
• 30, 32, 34, 36 and 38-tooth options
• 104mm BCD only (94 and 96 BCD coming soon)
• £49.95 / €59.90 / $59.90 USD

1XR Chainrings Explained:

Renthal’s 1XR chainring has two main features aside from the much copied narrow/wide teeth. First, the spaces between the teeth have been machined to allow the chain to push mud and chain gunk down and away from the tooth faces where the chain rollers contact. Reportedly, this prevents crud from
Renthal 1XR Chainring
building up that can potentially derail the chain. Second, the wider pair of teeth are shaped to increase clearance for the inner chain plates, which is said to increase longevity and further ensure chain retention.

Renthal 1XR Chainring - Review
The worst that winter could throw at me was no problem for the 1XR.
Renthal 1XR Chainring - Review
After a few months of hard riding, the teeth are showing some wear.

Pinkbike’s Take:
bigquotesRenthal's 1XR narrow/wide offering is off to a good start, but the popular British component maker needs to expand its color range and bolt circle diameter options to keep in step with its competition - and there is the fact that Renthal's chainring is nearly double the price. But, the 1XR performs exactly as promised. Mud clears easily between the teeth and there's little if any grinding in muddy conditions, or when pushing cross-over gear combinations. Chain retention is the best I have found to date on any narrow/wide type chainring. I only lost the chain once during testing and that was due to a stick getting lodged into the drivetrain. Renthal's 1XR is the only chainring I have found so far that I would trust to use without a top-guide in any situation. - Paul Aston

I like how the color of their gear is guaranteed not to match almost any bike out there. Don't they know non-matching components decrease pedaling efficiency??
  • 123 1
Just means you need to buy ALL THE RENTHALS. then you will match.
  • 54 3
Branding...accessorizing doesn't matter to them. They are known for that color and that look. That is what their top athletes use and what ultimately we as the fans see. And yet we buy it cause it is a great, reliable product, despite the color!

I like gold carbon Renthal bars Gwin ran this season.

The bars and stems are sick, but this is a pretty ugly chainring. Though I'm sure functionally very nice.

Although "never" dropping a chain is prettymuch a BS claim, I've dropped several chains on several brands of NW ring.
  • 24 3
Spot on @trainboy17 - the color is easily recognizable from the distance, an iconic piece of equipment. It may not sell as well as other chain rings but it surely sells well enough. Not every company sets out to be the top seller, you can satisfy your demons in other ways Smile

You have obviously not tried the 1XR then !!!!

i was about to post a message saying kinda like the same thing! why renthal is still dug in this "olive vomit" color that matches with nothing?

i don't know if their products are great , or not.since the color doesn't match with my bike (as 99% of all bikes) i don't event consider them as a possible choice when i build a bike.

especially because they are manufacuring "simple components" like handlebars, stems and rings, where you can find plenty of brands and items in the color you need , for a same quality and a lower price.

I think the fecal-brown gold of Renthal. Definitely, is a stand alone colour. In the cycling industry.

they should produce bars in different colours, yet another brand which can't hear what WE want
  • 22 0
Little hard on this ring imo, not only have the bolt patterns been rectified by the sounds of it but many other chain rings only come in 104bcd. Secondly if you compare the price to other top quality narrow wide's it's the same, about $60usd so I'm left scratching my head on that one. The color is well, the color... I love the Renthal ano color it's completely unique and who else can say that? Black is always black and red is pretty much always red......Renthal is iconic. Plenty of options out there for folks who want that Technicolor dream-bike look.

whow! i'm below threshold just because i don't like the colour... what an over-reaction!
  • 12 1
See I think it's a pretty neutral color and therefore "matches" 99% of bikes ... but that's just opinion, I think the down props maybe stem from "I don't even consider parts that don't match my bike".....
  • 6 0
Just try one. This ring as good as it gets for 1x set up. Just did a 12 mile mud ride and it was flawless. NO CHAIN SUCK! My old 1x wide narrow ring worked great until you added mud. It matches my bike spot on so you know its faster now. This ring rocks. Thanks for the great product Renthal.

My biggest issue is every time I'm passing riders they are all ways yelling at me. Nice matching Renthal parts bro!

There's a reason why some companies choose these colours and it's called advertising. Faded gold Renthal bar, beige Dugast tires, yellow Mavic rims, kashima gold Fox forks, if you see it in a video you can immediately identify it.
  • 2 0
 moto bars have different colors
  • 5 0
@barth1003 when you say I wouldn't consider buying arguably the best components because the colour doesn't match your bike you definitely deserve to be negged.
  • 1 0
Part of the problem is that the design of this ring is ugly as well as the colour. www.renthal.com/shop/image/cache/data/cycle%20category/cycle-sr4-270x270.jpg

this smaller one looks way nicer.
  • 7 2
I personally love Renthal colour for being different and breaking the colour scheme, making it more humane. Same goes for Öhlins stuff. Mavic? Not so sure it fits since their stuff is not discreet by any means. In general, for me personally, there is nothing worse than those pimped bikes with color-matched components. They look as if you hired a personal shopper.
  • 2 2
 Exactly what WAKI said.
  • 2 0
^The matching ano everything bikes look gaudy AF.
Just because one can get their hubs, headset, stem, bar and grip caps, seat collar, pedals, chainring and extender cog all in roughly the same colour doesn't mean they should!
Or DVO equipped bikes with every component possible in that green really distracts from the suspension. And is probably my biggest issue with the company. LOL.
  • 3 1
It's hard to believe that 90% of these comments are about bike color and not the actual design of the part. But then again, it's pinkbike....
  • 1 0
Also sorry all of my ano
Parts are all cyan blue and everything else is all black on one bike and one the other, it's red and black. I should've told deity to send me the rainbow package when they sent out my parts for the year. What's wrong with a bike matching?

Do whatever you want, some people don't like cowboy hats and we are not going to force them to like them
  • 1 0
I find ano to look tacky in bright colors. They look cheap. I own and have owned many so I'm not judging. I often find they look better one their own though and then once I mount it up ... meh. I don't know something about the aesthetic of the Renthal gold looks high class to me.... and would match a cowboy hat pretty well.

  • 32 1
 Colors? Really? It's RENTHAL GOLD!
  • 10 1
I know eh. How could one possibly fault renthal in a review because it didn't have more colors. Are we 5 year olds or grown (wo)men riding bikes? Or are we pre-teens who buy things based on colors. Who cares.

And to add, these 'colors' are nothing more than type 2 anodizing, which is thinner (0.00007" to 0.001") than type 3 HARD anodizing (0.0005" to 0.006"). So in the end I'd prefer this color in the right type of anodizing as should PB reviewers. To say otherwise is choosing fashion over function. Go Renthal.

I've said it before and now i'll say it again, mountain bike components are a rip off! How can a Renthal sprocket for a superbike, with twice the material and twice the machining, cost less than this offering? I respect Renthal, and consider them a quality brand, but i wouldn't buy this it's clear that they're taking the p$ss with the pricing...
  • 5 2
I get where your from BUT , it ain't the cost of materials or the machining that costs !
  • 11 1
The reason behind that is that for every mtb chainring they sell, they sell 20 sb sprockets. It's the scale of economics man. makes sense now?
  • 1 0
Well, just like with everything else, you can get one for much less if you shop a a bit. I bought one for 52$ CAN shipped, raceface were 47$, so not much of a difference
  • 3 0
The moto sprockets have no narrow wide profile, they are really just a flat piece of aluminum with teeth cut and holes drilled so I'm not seeing where there is twice the machining. Factor in scale economics like @thebikings mentioned and there you go.
  • 3 0
Volume. If they are making 10x the amount of motorbike sprokets, then there's your first clue. Add to that the addition of machining a more complex profile (with tighter tolerances I'd bet) and additional operations (if any, if not it's still added time on the same set up) vs a plain jane sprocket and the reason is obvious. Machine cycle time is the main factor in costs, after qty.

@rip8569 Ha. My wife knits. She has carbon fiber knitting needles. We have so much wool in our house it's acting as extra insulation. No sh1t.

There are a million billion iterations of N/W rings these days. Let's collectively stipulate that they basically all work quite nicely. Except that's where the need for variety comes in - when they all work pretty well, you need to differentiate for the customer; other N/W rings (like my Race Face) can do direct mount down to 26t if I needed it, and I even have a big Race Face 42t 110BCD designed for CX bikes for my commuter.
  • 9 1
Gonna have to disagree with you here; having tried a few different N/W rings, the retention on the RaceFace was by far the worst. I've had... at least two RF rings, and they both dropped chains regularly. Not so much with OneUp, Wolftooth, and Shimano (obviously not N/W. But still had better luck).
  • 6 0
On my second blackspire, so far so good
  • 2 0
I've been running the RaceFace for two years now on both my Enduro and Session with zero dropped chains...set it up right and it is set and forget. I can't speak for everyone because we all have different bike setups, areas we ride in, and some ride in a more clunky manner than others. But it goes to show for every N/W naysayer there is someone who has had nothing but success.
  • 1 0
Full season on my Absolute Black Oval. No dropped chains so far????????.
  • 3 1
The raceface ring is basically made of cheese.

Very unimpressed with how long they last, especially as they were £40 retail at the time
  • 1 0
There is something way wrong with your setup if you are dropping with race face N/W. Or maybe just components combo who knows...
  • 1 0
Both RaceFace rings I've had I dropped chains regularly, @leftCoastBurn . Different component combos too. But to each their own. I just run different other rings and have had better luck. I'm also with @Konda , and think they're made out of some aluminum/cheese alloy.
  • 2 0
Yeah fair enough. Just seems strange to me. I have have had zero dropped chains with my race face nw. The trails around here are very rocky, plus that includes a few park days to test out the trail bike in full DH mode. I would drop the chain multiple times per run with a front mech--never with the NW in about 5 months. I do keep it really clean and run an xt med cage with the clutch always on. Not much mud here in socal so that might have something to do with my good luck... BTW 7075 is next to the best aluminum alloy on earth, but cheap type 2 ano is what allows it to wear faster.

ABSOLUTE BLACK and oval rings are the future. Love mine. Their website completely undersells the advantages. I don't think that every rider will get the same benefits. But they are competitively priced and the huge benefit I enjoyed motivated me to buy a second ring for the back up bike. And yes they have a RF Cinch mount.
  • 4 0
I got one and hated it. Good thing there is 31 flavors. Different strokes for different folks
  • 2 0
What was it that you didn't like about it? Krzymndyd?
  • 2 1
I bought an AbsoluteBlack oval ring and love it. I'm the type of pedaler with tons of power but no ability to sit and spin in a low gear up hills so it suits me perfectly, making uphills noticeably easier and more comfortable. Plus they make a version for every crank mounting I've seen.
  • 1 0
@daveatthreat did not like the feeling of the oval ring when out of the saddle and really pushing on the pedals. Was nice on uphills when I was taking it easy but overall it was not for me. Plus could not run my chain guide and did not want to spend more money for theirs.
  • 1 0
I didnt like technical climbs with the oval ring. Uneven torque made predictable traction tougher.
  • 1 0
Krzymndyd, I haven't had my oval ring very long but my feelings about it are just what you said. Slow steep climbs are pretty good much, But it feels very weird when putting in a hard sprint effort. I like the idea but I think they made it a bit too oval for my liking.

I've used this ring for about 6 months already, and it works great, have not dropped the chain once yet, better than the raceface I was using, I can care less about the color, it works!!!!
  • 1 0
I'm currently running this chainring, works great & my chain doesn't drop without a chain guide. As far as color goes, it matches my Renthal Fat bar and duo stem but that's about it. Function > fashion.

Great to see Renthal getting a review like this! It'll help the company out a lot! They need to expand their line up though, and only then will I be able to purchase one for my Raceface cranks!
