Sorry Matt, but Gwin has outdone Stevie on so many levels that they're not even comparable... but I've gotta admit that its really disappointing that he doesn't do this race Frown

everyone shut up there both rad riders!
  • 32 3
Well. Stevies the man cuz i saw him at the US open after his win last year drunk as a flagpole. So at the very least, he wins at partying, mr. scott. he's cool and nice too.

I'm only basing my opinion off the WC races guys, there's no need to take my comments personal or anything.... haha. But that's neat-o you've partied with someone that rips hard on a bike! Quite the claim.
  • 25 10
Why don't I think Gwin is the man? Because he's not as fun as Stevie. Stevie's looking to win but I know he's looking to have a great time doing it. He's been in a couple of MTB films risking it for the biscuit. He seems like an all round cool guy. Gwin on the other hand just seems like a machine, and I don't mean that in a good way. My two cents. Now let's strap the helmets on and go for a ride. Big Grin

If gwin is the man why isny he on the list for pro men... Huh what di you say, stevie is the man
  • 7 2
Steves the man. Anyways... At one point I was about 50 ft above the glc drop and I looked at the track and a black bear walked across. He kept going and checked out the boneyard for a couple of minutes. Pretty rad. It was funny to hear on the crews walkie talkies ' keep an eye out for the bear crossing the trail '

^^^ur an idiot, gwin isnt on the list for pro men because he is too good for crankworx, he just races wc and select others like us nationals, that being said, mad props to stevie, hes an awesome all around rider/dude and deserves a win!
  • 25 3
TOO GOOD FOR CW????? No one, ever, is too good for CW! Stevie has/had a mad stash, so that makes him the man by default.

Mark wallace is the man. props to him

I'd just like to point out, among this rampant parochialism, that 3 fullas from a little country in the southern hemisphere are in the top 20. Over-representing much?

Advice for you, little buddy.

And if I'm the man,
Then you're the man, and
He's the man as well so you can
Point that f*ckin' finger up your ass."

. For god sake, can't Americans just be stoked to see someone win at a race in their home country? Get over it. Gwin is a legend for sure, but we can't always win at everything. Show some goddamn sportsmanship. Not to mention Canada will ALWAYS reign supreme in mountain biking. Its the MTB epicenter.
  • 9 0
I think the man here has to be the Columbian guy who came 2nd. I had never heard of him and he wiped out Chris Kovarik etc.
  • 15 1
hahaha this is all so funny. there is only one "man" in mtb and hes from yorkshire and got a big nose. its not how many races you win or how many times youre world champ. its the legacy you leave the sport and very few can match peaty for that. just saying.

well done to steve smith and gutted for jack reading.

gwin is fast but like sam hill has no personality.

  • 3 1
did i say he was? no.
was i just pointing out to the seppos that just cos you have got a dh winner at last that he isnt, the man? yes.
should you read what people write before trying to be a smart arse? probably.
  • 3 1
surgesunday doesn't know what he's talking aboot.
  • 2 1
Of course, Peaty is the most decorated DH rider of all time, and i love him to bits. It just feels like nobody's giving Stevie the praise he deserves, that's all, and i'm sorry for the arsehole comment!

A lot of peeps deserve a spanking in here... Why the heck would yo bring up Gwin? Its Smiths time to shine. Selfish bastard!

Gwin is a machine, no doubt about it. But machines also have a lack of personality.
  • 1 3
people who are less awesome than the entire field debating their merit. just so everyone knows, they all crush it.
  • 3 1
moturner- comparing two insane athletes, although is really silly to do, its fun. It just shows that we have a lot of people in this sport that love it and love talking about it and all its aspects including the top echelon of riders. I never get why people think that we are somehow insulting these guys when its common knowledge that they do all indeed crush it. Hell just look at how many people neg propped my comments? That's a shit ton of people just on the side that disagrees with me that Gwin isn't as good of a rider as Stevie (or as fun which is something I can't even comment on, haha). Yeah they're really not comparable but who cares, its harmless chatter. And there is not one rider out there that is too good for Crankworx. That's like saying a priest is too good for the Vatican, or that Magic Mike is too good for the... I don't know any male strip clubs but you get the point. Crankworx is legend.

Nothing against smith but has he won any wc's? NOPE
  • 1 0
Can't beleive none of you guys brought up Palmer..............guy could party like a champ and bring it the next day on the track. That makes Palmer 'The Man' in my book.
  • 1 2
Palmer is old news. He was the man but were talking about atm man
  • 3 1
^ That's an incredibly stupid comment. No respect.
  • 2 0
Surely, if Gwin was the man, you wouldn't need to say "at the moment"?

Once the man status has been earned, it's permanent. You've just undermined your own argument.
  • 2 0
wow i didnt know there were Gwin haters, what did he do wrong? just cause he wins alot doesnt mean you should hate him. and you cant just judge people by results a race run could go really good or bad with mistakes.
  • 2 0
Same here, the guy is making out to be one of the best DH has ever seen and they attack him over stupid things like having no personality when in reality none of them know him at all or I bet none of them have never met him personally. I bet you its just the Canadians and Brits (the ones who are finding reasons to hate him) are being jealous babies who are only happy to see someone from their nation do well instead of loving that someone is pushing DH to a new level. Even though this is about Stevie destroying one of the toughest DH races ever, it should never create such hate over mentioning another rider for fun... except for those who deserve to get hated on for saying something, like I did first time around, that can be taken as a pretty ignorant comment, haha.
  • 3 0
haha americans saying we only want our own guys to win. this coming from a country that had to rearrange the medal table in the Olympics when they werent at the top. yes i know you were top in golds at the end but you were judging on overall number of medals when china had more golds. palmer was a legend but for me he will always be a snowboarder, and a fucking legendary one at that. ps i never said i hate gwin, only that he is like sam hill and lacking personality.
  • 1 0
Hey bud, one ginger to another, its not good to stereotype a whole nation. Notice how I'm addressing the ones who are finding a reason to hate on him which is a bit different than saying everyone from your country or Canada. It just so happens to include you this time, whoops. But that's great logic to say you're against generalizing and then to do it yourself with an absurd claim that... we're all like the guys who arrange the medals at the Olympics? Are you insane? Anyways, how do you even know his personality? You don't know him personally so yes, you're coming up with stupid reasons in order to somehow lower his status or whatever else reason you find logical.

Anti-American sentiment is nothing new and judging by your comment, you're full of it.
  • 2 0
maybe you should read what people write and make sure you understand it. your reply picks on points you either misunderstood or just made up. i made no comment about not generalising people, you are the one assuming all the gwin haters do so because he beats the rest. would this not in fact be a generalisation?
the olympics thing was giving an example of how most americans like to think they are the best in the wold at everything, and one i found quite funny. im old enough, wise enough, and traveled enough to know you cant judge the whole nation by how the majority act. im english, i dont drink and hate football, but i dont get offended by comments about the uk being full of footie loving piss heads and the like.

i have met sam hill on a few occasions and he is pretty dull, even after winning the worlds at ft bill. friends that have spent time with gwin have described him as having a personality like sam. its got nothing at all to do with him beating the brits, i doubt my mate will be winning anything soon.

i save the anti american sentiment for the stereotype f*ckwitts seppos.

That was tight except that you figure for the world's longest dh race, they would have more than 4 cameras set up, half of them in mundane spots showing 30ft. of track.... or cutting out one of the sections on Stevie's run to show a guy's face for 10 seconds. Sorry to sound ungrateful but I hope they do a better job next year of covering this race and giving it the perspective it deserves.

Amen Scott! That was stupid. Get a different crew, more cameras, and Rob Warner.
  • 1 0
coverage is like that every year...
  • 17 3
We try our best to bring you guys the coverage and want to thank you for tuning in. Garbo is technical and it's long (12km / 7.5 miles) - 3 X the length of a World Cup. We had 7 cameras set up along the course. Even if we had a heli about 75% is in tree cover so we couldn't get much more footy anyways. Hopefully one day you'll be able to ride the track yourself and see what we are dealing with. "See you" on Wednesday when we webcast Air DH and keep tuning in, I think you'll like what we have coming up.
  • 7 2
Yeah I had the privilege of riding it in 06 which is why I was a lil bit disappointed in not seeing any of the insanely awesome and gnarly parts of the track in this broadcast. Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy that you guys put in the hard work to bring us the live coverage because its a hundred times better than some pictures and a write up but it did seem like the only camera angles were at the start and a few right near the bottom in mundane spots. Of course I have no clue in what it takes in setting cameras up on this course which does have nasty steep terrain so I leave the better judgments up to you guys and can only give my opinion. I can't wait to watch the air DH because it sounds like you have something awesome up your sleeves for that. Although I gotta stand by the fact that the editing was a bit frustrating especially when it cut out right as Stevie was entering the frame in the first lower section shot... haha. As long as that doesn't happen often in the air DH, its going to be the most entertaining race of the year. Scrubs galore!
  • 10 2
I ride whistler all the time. It's not like you can just set up a camera to see more than 30 feet at almost any spot. Also for the sidelines, you have to find safe spots for cameras. To see the whole track would take probably 50+ cameras. Respect to you guys for doing what you can Smile
  • 1 1
Didn't you notice the sponsor banners?
There was the Dose.ca shot, then the Jeep shot, and finally the Bud Light shot before the finish.
It's all about sponsor placement Wink
  • 4 0
We couldn't have this event without the sponsors.
  • 1 0
Exactly my point Smile If you're only able to place a few cameras, then each one ought to include a shout out.

I wondered if she crashed, but wasn't sure... that explains it. She kills it when she comes out to our local XC races so she definitely has the endurance for something like this on top of her awesome DH skills. don't know why someone neg propped you for saying that. It just explains how fast she is!

  • 2 3
All this "Steve is the man" is out of national pride. While I have to admit that he is exciting to watch, he hasn't produced on the WC. That being said, this evolution is all about ripping with style, and Stevie has plenty of it. Now can we move on...?

Just because I don't have DH pics on my profile, doesn't mean I don't ride it bud, but you're right, life sucks when you get to work from your house in Whistler and ride the bike park and the local trails every day. I mean, who'd have thought that at 30 this is what life would be like? If only I could be 17 again and living with my parents. Wink

Stevesmom, dont listen to this idiot, you and your son have both done us proud! There is so much more to being atop in this sport than simply winning. Look at guys like Peaty and Cedric, not the fastest guys on the hill anymore but still completely and utterly awesome. Steve is great to watch, and a huge boost to this sport both on and off the bike. ripitforlife, I am going to give you a valuable life lesson that will help you in more ways than you know. Close your mouth and listen to people who are older and know more than you. Ditch the ego, no one wants to be around a blowhard.
