Sequence Saturday 34

Sep 29, 2012
by Ian Hylands
bigquotesAs I search for new content for the Sequence Saturday feature, there are some weeks when I just don't have anything new. Whether we've searched high and low and just not found anything, or as in this case, simply left it a little late, sometimes there just isn't anything new. Which is not really a problem, it just gives me a chance to pull something out of the vault. Many of you will remember this shot of Cam McCaul from New World Disorder, it was a Fox poster, as well as a magazine shot in several different countries, and it remains one of my favorite shots.

When Cam and I had first gone to Green River several years previous to this, we had found this gap, and Cam and the guys had built the jump. It took a lot of mental prep, but Cam eventually went for it, although a little too fast, and with too much lip. He ended up jumping it more than a few bike lengths to flat, and swore he would never do it again. Cut to a year or two later and Cam went back with the NWD crew and rebuilt it, and threw a bunch of big superman seat grabs over it. So much for never again. Then the following year Cam decided he wanted to flip it. No lack of preparation this time. I hooked up with Cam in Issaquah where he was filming with NWD again, and he had found a jump that was almost the exact same gap, but without the consequence. Several practice flips into it he was confident he could do it, although he didn't say much at the time. It was about a 16 hour drive from there to Green River, but we made it pretty much straight through, and the next day we took a look at it. A little bit of Utah acclimatization on some smaller stuff that day, and then another good sleep and he was ready. One practice jump, and then this giant flip. Huge props to Cam for pulling it off!

The Pinkbike user with the craziest comment will be sent a nice new EVOC Freeride 20L Pack

Please keep in mind that we choose the winner based on the best comment, it does not and never has had anything to do with the number of props. Also keep in mind that anyone found to be giving out negative props to a number of users without explanation or reason given will be banned for prop spamming.

I once heard that Cam McCaul arm-wrestled Clint Eastwood in a seedy nightclub called The Alibi- an old IHOP that started selling beer to bolster lunch sales and never looked back. McCaul was about to lose, badly, when he remembered that Eastwood was ticklish in the scariest of all places...his bald spot.
McCaul reached out, and instead of manhandling his vodka-soaked short-stack of pancakes like Clint thought, he let his fingers do the moonwalk right over the shiniest place on the mans head.
Needless to say, Clint lost it.
Never before had such peals of laughter echoed through that dank, dark place. The cooks looked up from their toast a la whiskey. The diners looked up from their complimentary wine-cooler fruit-bowls. The hostess woke up for a brief second, mumbled something about Brett Tippie tipping wonderfully (a story for another time), and then fell back asleep in the defunct claw-machine prize bin.
Cam McCaul won something that day, and Clint Eastwood lost his most precious gift- the personal gravity that made him a star. Cam could now soar over canyons and flow down the steepest chutes in perfect poise...double your gravity, double your fun.

I don't know what to think about that story, but props for your creativity!

Are you sure Clint wasn't arm-wrestling someone in an empty chair, pretending it was McCaul?

I hear Eastwood can't even look at a pancake without mumbling McCaul's name and scratching his head. Here is a shot of Clint back in the day with his bike www.askmen.com/fashion/style_icon_100/113_clint-eastwood-style-icon.html

Another backflip....yawn.... Good footage for making me sleepy before I go to bed. It will be refreshing if someone wins the Wooden RAMP-age in Utah without doing a lame, predictable, robotic flip. Burn down the ramps, Red Bull! Do the right thing. OK clones fanboys, hit your negative props button...
  • 35 0
@protour you go do that then...
  • 23 0
As lame as it may be that every kid down at the local skatepark can backflip flyout, I'd like you see just attempt that gap. Yeah you may see flips a fair bit nowdays, but this isn't over a dirt jump where if it goes wrong, you can bail and give it another crack. You mess something like this up and you're gone, hence the respect for something like this. While I agree Rampage should be shredding natural terrain, you really can't take away anything from something like this. It's easier to talk when you're only a spectator and not the one actually riding things like this.
  • 16 0
We all know Red Bull Rampage is coming next week. When Zink done a 360 of the Oakley stepdown it was one of the biggest achievements in action sports and still is today. If someone throws the same trick this year, it doesn't make it less impressive. In "Where the trail ends" Lacondeguy said "you are hitting this line first, and probably you'll be the last.", and not because it cannot be reached by others, but because it is insane, mad, frightening, full of adrenaline and excitement. I can see a lot of these words in this sequence. So it is just a backflip, but a freaking big one.

Protour I agree 100%, stop littering the desert with big gawdy ramps. But of course all the keyboard warriors disagree.
  • 10 1
That's because some of us have seen the course in person and know that the ramps make up less than 5% of the course... shocking, right?

Also, that gap, it's been 5 years and its still in pristine condition... waiting for another maniac to hit it.

Great way to be respectful, Protour. Wonderful comment. I bestow upon you my favorite neg prop. Just for that.
  • 3 0
yes protour, polite and respectful? you seem to think you have to criticise absolutely everything, yet you have no information, photos or videos to show you even bike up on your profile. people are getting sick of seeing your comments everywhere, you need to learn to just leave it.

Hammy, I don't criticize everything. I complimented someone above and got huge positive props, so your wrong.

People aren't getting sick of me, otherwise why would they come back and check my responses like you are right now? Your wrong again.
And who gives a crap about my profile? Only weird strangers with no life, that's who. Seriously, why would you do that? But I will post a bike pic maybe.

I am leaving it...I'm leaving my honest opinions on here! You should be a little more respectful of them since I have alot more experience in this sport than you, I'm sick & tired of your negative reactions, shape up or get out, understand?
  • 4 0
er come again? who gives you huge positive props? i call bullshit on that one.
most of your views seem to be ridiculously structured, poorly backed up irritable statements with little or no real point to make, for example "back flips are boring..."
seriously?
maybe you drop in the odd kind remark to make it seem like you aren't a total douche, but in reality, every time i see your name it is in faded grey with about 50 neg props next to it.
sorry, but people genuinely don't want you commenting on everything.

  • 4 0
Ok, so your Clint Eastwood comment has 30 props, but if we add all of your others, you are well below 0. And yes, people are getting sick of your negative comments. Maybe not everyone, but I am and I know many others are. It's not just you, though. I feel that comments on PinkBike have gotten increasingly volatile. I often feel like its hard to state an opinion without getting shat on. I guess my personal take on it is, everybody just needs to relax and focus on the positives of this sport that we all love.

  • 4 0
Super excited to see this sequence, I called to my wife to show her and hope she would experience the same kind of flutter in her stomach as I have in mine. Kindly and respectful as a 20+ year spouse could be, (especially after hearing me talk about Moto and MTB for all of those 20+ years), she managed to quickly turn her head and mutter a monotone "wow honey" and spin back to cooking dinner without missing a beat. She just has no clue!!!!!!!

Nobody realized the Power needed to gap over the time derivative of this cliff bar. Although it was certainly not the unspoken but implied "good energy" from Greg's Watts alone that got this man across the chasm, K. Energy certainly had a factor of 2, the others being rotational force, and the utter mass gravity height of the situation. Such a massive displacement achieved by man on man himself without the use of outside forces must surely be recognized as one of the greatest allowed in the history of Newtonian bicycle mechanics. Thus, as the photographer hiding in the hills saw the shot, he was quick to shout, "Eureka!"
  • 2 0
I read somewhere that that ravine was once an Indian burial ground. There was a family from India who lived up the road a bit, they said cemeteries were too expensive. Its nice to see Cam putting their spirits at peace, all the same.

A man asked that photographer how did he jumped that far, he replied, an old men went after 7 huge mauntains and fought with a seven headed dragon, in the first mauntain he had to fight with 2 twins who were born out of 3 mothers, they say they were so strong they would kill a bull with their pinki finger. But the old men had an ak47, which he knocked them down in a heartbeat. In the second mauntain he had to fight with grandson of billy bob, but he was so stoned that he thought it was gandalf, so he let him pass. On the third mauntain he had to fight with biggest cobra, he fought it for 4 months day and night until cobra was so tired, Anderson the old men kmznnwjhaaauwuU cut it vertically. ...fuck it it,s stupid story anyway

Life is based on fear...... If we never conquered or even faced our fears we would still be stuck where four year olds are today receiving a roar of applause droping a curb. Frear makes modern riders so great, the fact that they are facing and conquering their fears which others can't. If fear did not exist and when people asked what are you afraid of everyone could tell the trouth and say nothing, therefore everyone would be at the same level and the sport would be ruined. Contests and races would rely completely on if someone has an unlucky landing or corner. Congrats Cam and everyone else who has done something when fear was standing in their way.
