Sequence Saturday 41

Dec 1, 2012
by Ian Hylands
Chris Kovarik can drift a corner like no one else, and when I chose to shoot with him for my Deep Summer slide show this was one of the shots I had in mind. I know it's been done on video before, but I thought it would make a cool sequence as well. I wouldn't normally be comfortable with most riders going this fast, this close to my camera, but for some reason I wasn't overly stressed lying on the ground unable to move with Chris drifting sideways at high speed barely a foot from my head...

Chris Kovarik really cannot ride his bike straight, if you catch my drift.

 True Story:
Last time I heard "... if you catch my drift" from a girl who tried to tell me she was a lesbian.... My life went sideways...... on the ground.
  • 60 9
Kovarik's drifts are so good, Ken Block is getting jealous Wink
  • 49 19
it would be better if he was actually drifting and not skidding.......
  • 11 2
WE MUST all support Ian for the broken lenses he got from Kovaric . . i think they are expensive too!
  • 6 0
im willing to bet bikerboywill, skid or not, Kovarik still makes it look better
  • 3 2
 Broken legs you mean?
  • 2 0
really wasnt comfortable with him riding that close, but you were comfotable with him sending rock shards into you camera lens?
  • 3 0
Check out this PB video of Chris around the 2:00 mark - its drifting!

I love knowing exactly where at whistler a sequence of picture is taken
  • 2 0
I had to see so much rock since Colin McRae was visiting my country for 'Acropolis Rally''!!!!! Kovaric keep those coming!!!!!!
  • 1 0
 @ stompeinator
Good for you!! so do I.

To anybody else who looked at this and thought he was skidding I think the camera had just picked up the spinning wheel at the same point in each picture cause the front wheel also looks like its not spinning from picture to picture

 Skids are for kids.

I wanna see a picture of Chris Kovarik when he was in high school... He must of been such a skid...

Coming in sideways, Flowing lines like pens, Elegant as bouquets, yet too dirty to cleanse, Rocks chipping chainstays, Kovarik's skid receiving all tens, Hope he mans up and pays For my new camera lens

 22 wannabe motocrossers and counting.
  • 27 4
He's just rippin that corner like I rip farts
  • 17 5
Everyone today are too obsessed with having long travel bikes and sticky tyres so that they can generate the maximum amount of speed out of a corner. Props to this guy for putting the fun back into riding like when we were kids. I'm sure everyone used tks have competitions with their friends to see who can do the longest skid. Sometimes the quickest way around the corner isn't always the most satisfying.
  • 22 1
Yes... except he is on a long travel bike & most likely has sticky tyres... the difference being is he can drift like this only faster
  • 8 1
@Alyn, whadda ya mean, "used to"????
  • 5 2
He's got nothing on me anyway! Before I did a skid that lasted all day!
  • 15 0
Skids in your pants don't count by the way ^^ Wink
  • 12 1
this is ridiculous. levy should never have written that article...now all i hear/see on pinkbike is people giving other people crap about what bike they choose to ride. i dont even ride a long travel bike and i find it really f*cking annoying.
  • 20 6
these attempts at jokes are just awful....
  • 5 2
true that- desperate for a vest?
  • 9 0
The crazy thing is all the corny jokes and poems normally get propped. They haven't been posting the winners anymore, I wonder if they actually give them away still...
  • 5 1
why does this 'awful joke' comment get the most prop and it is pretty much the exact words of highest prop'd comment in sequence 39... no need for it to be top comment twice
  • 4 0
Calm yourself young grasshopper, props don't win the prize.

GTFO with all your negativity bro. Just have some fun here.
  • 1 0
i dont even care im just pointing out the the fact that he pretty copied the most prop'd comment of sequence 39
  • 7 10
Sadly in this one he's just skidding, not actually drifting. Frames 4-9 show the rear wheel not turning at all. While the dude is a complete lunatic on a bike... this particular photo is a skid anyone could pull.
  • 6 8
 I'm with Socket
  • 3 0
its a skid yes, not exactly one anybody could pull though
  • 9 0
my wheels not turning in photographs is constantly a problem too socket, tell me when you find a solution
  • 2 1
Bottomly, as much as your comment made me chuckle, Socket is right. The stickers on his wheel don't turn, the wheel isn't turning, photograph or not.
  • 12 0
Reading these comments is always a way to induce a headache...
  • 8 0
Ian wanted to know how it feels to get stoned... so he asked Kovarik who is always sideways for some help!
  • 4 0
k I'll admit that was pretty creative
  • 8 0
im personally too sideways to come up with a joke to win the suit
  • 5 0
With eight grand of camera gear and a potential makeover on the line, I bet the bigger skid mark will have been left in Ian's Drawers.
  • 4 1
I'm glad to see a sequence that's on the ground; they're all usually of jumps/tricks - cool to see one on the ground...wich brings me to the actual content: Kovarik is THE best when the trail gets loose... his drifts (NOT SKIDS) are absolutely sick!! What I don't like about this sequence, however, is that half of it is just blurry rocks.. I mean, the first half of the sequence was RAD, but then the second half was just rocks... :/
All told, I love this sequence and Kovarik is the best! Big Grin
  • 4 2
As a sequence it is way cool and I like it. It is at a Bike Park and I am sure Chris has paid for the right to ride like crazy. However, as a trail builder drifting and berm bashing makes me cringe. One of the 4 semi photos of the year is a berm basher. Cool, but you better not be doing that sh?t on my trail! Just remember, if you are not at a bike park, don't kick the sh?t out of a trail unless you are willing to fix the damage.
  • 2 0
Hate to be that guy, but thats a skid. Back wheel is locked through the entire sequence. In my honest and somewhat douchy opinion when I drift, I'm braking the back wheel loose while keeping it spinning. Needless to say you still put yourself and equipment on the line for a sick shot.

  • 5 0
You're never too sideways unless you're looking over the back wheel.
  • 4 2
When i lean it's mean, it's like nothing you've seen. My last cutty was muddy, it even covered somebody. Cuz in the dirt and vert, you need to stay alert. When i drift it's swift, i was born with the gift.
  • 1 1
Poor camera... and to the rider, I really do appreciate his style the way he enjoys the ride because that's what I think mountain biking is all about, about the pleasure of the ride. I think that we have focused on the speed to much and kind of forgot to simply enjoy our ride....
  • 1 0
This is a true "Ant Hill Production" looking at some sideways dude in their new film "From the Ground Up". Reports say that the photographer commented after the photoshoot "thank god for exo-skeletons" Smile
  • 1 0
If you think about it compared to drifting a car, it is actually pretty incredible. I have tried drifting both, and while it is relatively easy in a car, all I got from doing it on my bike is a road rashed backside
  • 4 0
...the coolest sequence I have seen. Period.
  • 3 1
I recon most riders drift, but normally completely by accident because we're out of control and trying to stop ourselves hitting a big frikin' tree lol

Chris is so good at getting sideways on the trails that he got bored with it and decided to defy some physics on the gravel access roads at breakneck speeds.. nothing unusual here.
  • 4 4
The Karver coming in hot, about to pulverize the trail, with Hylands set up for the shot, hoping that he doesn't bail. Sliding the wheels sideways, with one foot dragged spraying rocks in his face, but Ian had the shot bagged.

I met Chris once. He walked towards me with his right shoulder and his pet crab was walking beside him. His hat brim pointing towards his left. We went for beers and he sipped from the handle part of the mug and talked out of his ear all the time cross eyed... This guy doesnt do anything in a straight line. legendary...
  • 2 0
i really wish i could delete this comment. nothing like having a few beers and surfing the net...
  • 1 0
And just as Chris committed to the drift and planted his foot, he thought to himself "Did i leave the coffee pot on?". Cause such things are effortless for these demigods we call pro riders.

Don't you get it? The angle of the getting sideways like that exceeds the price of the lenses! So it is worth it!

 Listen up....

Drifting is not only important while on your bike or in your car. It's important in life...in order to contantly find The Edge!

Kovarik has always had "the grab the bull by the horns, style"
I'd like to think that a man like him...would probably believe in a quote like this...

"Know your limits.
Not so that you can honor them,
but so that you can smash them to pieces
and reach for magnificence."

By: Cherie Carter-Scott
