PRESS RELEASE: Manitou

Manitou took the technology gleaned from their high-performance mountain forks and applied it to 4+in tires. The new Mastodon’s crown represents one of the most significant updates to the fork as it improves frame compatibility, eliminates the need for Standard and Extended sizes, reduces weight, improves knob clearance, and makes for an overall better aesthetic.

photo

Its new geometry incorporates a 44mm offset to match modern geometry as more weight is transferred to the front wheel. Its performance gets better as the new casting design uses extended reverse arch ribs to improve stiffness and handling even further. The lower axle to crown measurement maintains the same tire clearance and eliminates the need for Standard and Extended sizes. The Mastodon, as a result, is compatible with all fatbike 26in and 27.5in tires on the market .

Designed from the ground up, Mastodon is an engineered suspension fork made to tackle any terrain regardless of how low or high the numbers on the thermometer read. The 34mm stanchion Mastodon required all-environment and all-temperature performance testing that took the R+D staff to some of the most inhospitable testing environments in the world. To earn its place within the Manitou family, the Mastodon passed performance and reliability testing in both real world and lab scenarios at temperatures as low as -40 degrees.  The Dorado Air, seals, lubricants, and all other internals are proven for all-weather performance, no matter how extreme on either end of the temperature spectrum.

photo

The Mastodon is available out of the box in 100mm and 120mm travel and are internally adjustable by the rider in 10mm increments. The Mastodon Comp being internally adjustable from 80mm to 140mm and Pro models gain extra travel from 80mm to 160mm. This represents a huge advantage for shops, who can carry one single SKU instead of several. It is also a breath of fresh air for the rider, who no longer must make a purchase decision based on travel, knowing fully well they can adjust the fork to their needs at any given point in time.  The Dorado Air, 2-piece travel spacers compensate for negative air volume to provide consistent feel throughout the travel range.

photo

The ease at which the adjustment of travel is performed means that the rider can have the possibility to set travel to their desired travel using the travel change guides and videos found on ManitouMTB.com. The incorporation of such a simple procedure to adjust travel is yet another testament to Manitou’s ultimate goal of creating the best performing, easiest to adjust, most tunable solution available.

Like all Pro level Manitou suspension, the Mastodon utilizes the Dorado air spring first debuted in our iconic Dorado model. The newest version of the Mastodon incorporates the VTT6 damper for a simplified and more intuitive adjustment. The VTT6’s single knob adjusts both high and low speed characteristics to suite any terrain. These technologies, along with IVA volume adjustment that allows for fine tuning of the air spring, make for an unmatched customizable suspension that adapts to an extremely wide variety of conditions, riding styles and personal preferences.

Fat bikes are built for adventure and adventure is about leaving your comfort zone, yet the Manitou Mastodon is made to ensure that adventure is as comfortable and full of reliable performance as possible. Say hello to your new comfort zone. Say hello to the new Mastodon.

I thought suspension for fatbikes was stupid until last winter when I got pitched slightly nose-down by an exposed root on the takeoff of a boostable trail feature and was then yeeted into oblivion by the perfectly elastic collision of my front tire and the frozen ground. Damping is your friend.

I just picked up what I can then only assume is a gen 2 Mastodon fork last week — my timing is as always impeccable. Still, I couldn't be happier. I already loved taking my fatbike out for chill rides even on summer trails, but now I can bomb down trails at the same pace as my full sus. Oodles of grip too.

I predict a fantastic winter season.

Uphills with a fatbike in the snow must be horrible though

@waldo-jpg: depends on how packed the snow is. As long as it's packed down you can climb almost anything.

Mastodon Gen 2 is currently $400 with code: WILLRIDESREYNOLDS15

Just picked one up.

@martinaasa: I think his statement holds up with no qualifiers.

@scary1: Nope, you can really cruise on nice trails. My fat bike climbs better than my stumpjumper.

@BikersSwag: you da man; worked for me too

@waldo-jpg: on a few trails I've laid out better times up and down on snow packed winter conditions, -10 to -20c. Packed snow in the right conditions is like riding tacky dirt, only ALL the chatter from roots and rocks is flattened out, super smooth. Trick on snow is to find that sweet spot gear. Not to easy to avoid spinning out, not too hard you cant make the hill crest. Little more sensitive than dirt trails.

 @adriemel83: that sounds so fun

@waldo-jpg: I used to dread winter season but now that I have the right gear I can't wait! The fatbike is paired with a Dirtlej Dirtsuit for the :smiling pile of poo: days and Lenz Heat Socks for the ❄️ days.

@BikersSwag: f*ck yeah dude, just got 2 forks and a rebuild kit for less than cost of one fork ahahah. THANK YOU!!!

Now that Levy has been kicked into the Pinkbike nether-region, does that mean that Pinkbike staff would be up for a fat bike field test? I have tourism board chomping at the bit to make that happen. If you are admin, let me know and we can work to make that happen.

Remember Levy's Bucksaw review? Seemed to like that one a lot but in podcasts as
late as 1-2'years ago, he played it off like he remembered liking one but not really.

Would have fit perfectly with my raw RSD but anyway, I really love my Mastodon Pro that I have since last winter! From time to time I now ride my fatbike in summer too and it's super fun!

As someone who regularly rides at -40, I would love to give this fork a try at those temps. Not because I think its necessary in the slightest for the riding I do at those temps as the going is pretty slow and the trails are typically really smooth, but just to see if it actually works. I am very dubious that the fork would preform at those temps but I don't want to come off at a hater, just in my experience nothing works well when its that cold and everything that can go wrong, will.

Not to mention what happens to the air pressure when I roll my bike out from room temp to -40, the ~100 degree temp swing has got to do drastically reduce pressure in the fork.

I have a Mastodon Comp. Ride it year round. Had a ride around -10F where I did a 2ft drop, and the lowers stuck down. I think the temperature of the seals played into air blowing past the pos/neg seal (controlled by a long schrader poppet valve) and into the negative chamber. Easy fix, but I don't ride drops in the cold very often now - to avoid it... Otherwise it's been a good fork in the cold, handy for extra traction in bumpy or loose corners.

"nothing works well at -40" amen.
  • 3 0
@iduckett: Check your air piston. There was an update to em. OG has one glide ring, new one has two on either side of the x seal. It provides better stabilityto the piston, keeping the x seal better aligned in the stanchion. It prevents what you experienced.

I actually fixed this issue by not living in a place where the elements can kill you within minutes of exposure. Been working great for me so far!

 @Dirtdruid: I sure don't!

I own insulated rubber boots. If it is too cold for them, it's too cold for me to care.
  • 1 0
@hexonjuan: Appreciate that. I’ll reach out to Hayes. Otherwise I agree, my temp is limited by my boots!

I've used my Gen 1 Mastodon Pro down to -30 C (-22 f) without issue. But at -40, something bound to break. Had a few friends blown up their freehubs when commuting at -40 cause the pawls were frozen inside the freehub shell.

This is really interesting. You can fix the volume reduction of the air in the lower temperatures with higher pressures at room temperatures (or leaving the bike outside good luck).

The question is how behaviour the seals affect this picture in these temperatures.

I've only had like -15 to -20 degrees Celsius on my bike, and there the seals did not seem to have a negative effect.

 Fat biking is awesome.

Just snagged the gen 2 comp for $362 shipped... I've been suspension curious for my fatbike, this was such a good deal I had to give it a try.

Screw flat pedals win medals it’s should be fat bikes get instagram likes

A couple spots in that video it looked like the brake hose was getting rubbed by the tire when the fork compressed. Best part of this new fork is it means the excellent gen 2 is now half price.

I got excited when I saw the headline. I'm on the lookout for a nice 29+ fork but I guess the industry has given up on that size...
  • 1 0
 29x3 fits Wren's inverted fork
  • 1 0
Should fit fine, just check your tyre OD.
  • 1 0
@lperezco: DUDE! I've never heard of the Wren fork before, but damn! It checks all the boxes and is pretty cheap too. Plus, I don't have to go boost so I can switch back and forth with my rigid fork with no worries. I'm ordering one for sure...

Thanks

@farmer-john-2000: See if you can ride one or at least speak with some owners before you do. Seriously cannot recommend that fork.

Other than an annoying knock when my Mastodon tops out, I really like the feel of it. It's a major upgrade for fatbiking.
  • 1 0
agreed on the knock. Regardless I think this is the fork of choice for the winter crowd.
  • 3 0
I thought Mastadon was a band

I picked up a Gen 2 for $400 usd and I haven’t been able to get an actual ride in yet. But riding around the neighborhood it feels amazing. Sooo pumped for fatbike season!

I ran the OG mastodon for one year on a squishy fatbike… I REALLY loved it!!!!!!
  • 1 0
So would this fork fit a 29 wheel with a 2.4 inch tire, for those looking to build that "one bike"?
  • 4 0
Yeah but you need 2 wheelsets if you want to put fat tires for winter.... You need fatbike hubs don't forget that. 150mm wide, not 110.
  • 3 0
 It'll clear a 29 x 3 by the looks of it. I'm reading 798mm clearance to crown and 29 x 3 is 780mm. Probably generous clearance at 29 x 2.5 or so.
  • 2 0
@VTwintips: Yeah, with the Mastodon you can roll on 29+. If I remember correctly, not on the smaller version but the extended yes... but with that new version here, it's gonna be good.

 Love my Mastodon...

Put on mute and my ears are still suffering..
