Ben is absolutely on point and an asset out Pinkbike keeps him comfy and compensates him respectively. P the mess that is the actual broadcast is an embarrassment. Ben is holding the line for us all. Keep it up. Ben!!
@rudecanoeist: this is a bit harsh, but i admit, the show is better off with a replacement of Cedric. His time is long over. Does Tracy Hannah need a job?
@rudecanoeist: move on man. Robs time is over. I’ve been enjoying the commentary. Cedric although unrefined is highly knowledgeable and picks up on stuff that Rob never Did
Gracia though just has to learn that you can't make something exciting just by yelling. It's like it doesn't matter what is happening, it's exciting! He's 2.3 back! He's 3.2 GREEN! He's only 0.3 up! He's just a little bit down! Like every... single... run is just the most exciting thing he's ever seen in his life. I understand his job is to bring up the energy but it quickly becomes fake and tedious.
Ben Cathro is settin his own new standard for what straight up insightful commentary can look like in sports. not just mtbkg. I’m a big fan of Rob Warner,,,but Ben seems more tuned into conditions, lines, nuance of how suspension works and reacts to terrain, and the like.
@scott-townes: Agreed, one's bmw, the other mercedes, and it's an entirely different beast altogether to live-commentate a race vs. make a scripted vid w/ a team aftewards. Both are awesome - just not comparable.
I love these new young characters in the tale of DH, Finn is a hulk with a good head on him, a well spoken leader. Thibaut is hilariously aggressive and loose, fast as hell, looks like he could shave his eyebrows off at the top of his run and they'd grow back by the 2nd split. Ronan Dunne, enough said. Jordan Williams, wins the first race of the year, soft spoken, humble and self assured. Jackson Goldstone, we've followed him since he was on a run bike, hucking off steps in Whistler and now he's won a world cup, what are the chances of that actually happening. Vali is pretty awesome too, hilarious dgaf energy, Gracey idk I've not really seen interviews. And there's more fast juniors coming through now.
People talk a lot of nonsense about zoomer's, but I think all these youngsters are pretty wholesome hard working bike riders.
Couldn't agree with you guys more about Ben and the team. Great commentary before and after the race. Waaaay better than the GCN+ "live coverage" included replay. Love to see some stories about the pinkbike racers and how its going for the team.
Everyone slating the GCN+ coverage but that was the closest to Warner back in the day there has been for years. Cedric was great on the highlights and replays. Its early days and they are finding their feet. Cedric has great insight into lines and what is doubled, gapped, he went mental at TD, then crazy at Jacksons gap to gap. They said at the first 2 races they had been told to keep it calm etc, I think their wings were held and VDS was the first insight into what is to come... more of that enthusiastic coverage please it was awesome.
100% agree with this. CG has the knowledge and passion and that is really coming through now. Both of them seemed a lot more relaxed and natural this week. I honestly struggled listening to Warner a lot of the time as a lot of his outburst were over the top and just not required. I think the main issue with people slagging off GCN/Discovering is they just don't want to embrace change.
Thanks for the reality check @bestsie! We love Rob and Ben for what they did and continue to do, and we will love CG as much for what he is going to do! DH is dead, long live DH!
Agreed - I was bitching my brains out the 1st semis / finals and Ced has toned it down a bit (and still runs away like an untrained puppy) but he's an OG and is learning to commentate...it can be done. He was wildly outta control the 1st race and already leagues better now. Mostly I'm just stoked to see racing again and Warner out is shit but the racing is a good as ever (even w/ the questionable semi runs). Even w/ the rain slowing down some runs in the middle the dry-out and baller runs by Daprela, Finn, Jordan (even w/ the bail) and Jax at the end was unforgettable.
Sad Warner couldn't have called that but in the end these guys are racing w/o commentators going off in their heads other than their own, and lots of us are as stoked to watch racing as ever. Yeah, some weird stuff going on but whatever - it'll just get better. I can bitch w/ the best of them, but the coverage is fine, will improve, and Im just an armchair warrior so I'm gonna let go & enjoy. The main thing holding all this is mainly our thinking about it.
@hayden19: If he doesnt suffer too much after appendix surgery then he is on for the overall. The French revolution has been passed by the Canadian come back. They all pay tribute to Stevie and what he did for Canadian mountain biking which brings a tear to my eye every time they mention it.
Next.... the NZ revolution, its already starting.
European Dh has had it easy with the season mostly being in Europe over the last decade, but the other nations are branching out now and the field is stacked with fast talent, the new format and juniors coming up has pushed the level. Every run looks like Sam Hills run from 08 now!
I had him as a favourite for winning the whole World Cup. I mean, in hospital right before first race, and fastest in 3/5 sections for the last two races. Pretty hard to bet against him.
No mention of Laurie again, he was the most ignored rider through the live coverage and even in Cathro's comprehensive rundown... at least we saw footage of his crash, but it'd be nice to know a bit more about what happened to him given he got no airtime whasoever in the semis or finals broadcast
@Roost66: Oh I didn't see his time come up at all. Yeah you're right, he did get airtime, but without being able to see the clock, and the commentary about as insightful as fox news, it didn't feel like we'd seen him race
@Fukit-Just-Hukit: all the kids. these are the first gen strider bikers. they started shredding at age 2... as well as all the kids now coming up. they are going to continue to blow our minds. but this year's rookie class is definitely on a different level than anything we've seen before. [which some of us called a couple years ago]
@snomaster: Yup balance bikes are the best invention since the Rover safety bicycle (P.S. everyone should read Bicycle: The History and Fat Tire Flyer for the history of bikes and mountain bikes).
I didn't learn to ride until I was probably 6 or 7 years old. Now I have my 4 year old on a pedal bike and I'm sure many people are getting their ankle biters on one even earlier.
I love Cedric but man is he definitely not Rob Warner. The FPV shots are incredible but that is the only endearing aspect of the new broadcast, everything else stinks compared to Red Bull streaming and Rob.
Holy shit though the speed of the guys these days, I am absolutely blown away. I'm from the Sam Hill era, the GOAT fight me!, but holy mother the guys these days are on another level. My theory is it's the first generation of balance bike riders, Jackson is just un-fuckin-believable. Not to mention he can go throw a double flip. Simply unreal
I love Ben every vídeos and opinions...so pratical and honest.....
Cedric is a show men...because he likes shows....I love girls but whith Tracey I can sleep anywhere....keep rockin Cedric (remember thats One ir the first to win world cups and races with whips and no handers just for fun..) that is real MTB

Also shoutout to Sacha Earnest in the Jr's kicking ass.
But winning World Cups on your debut season in Elites is pretty next level, will be an interesting next few years for those 3.
