Video: Yoann Barelli Teaches Adam Important Racing Skills - The Privateer Episode 6

Aug 3, 2018
by Pinkbike Originals

Adam needs some race coaching and who better to do it than fellow Spank rider Yoann Barelli? Fresh off a top 10 in La Thuile, Yoann gave Adam some 'outside the box' advice about how to choose lines and what preparation is key before the big day at Crankworx Whislter.

photo
Having some time to sit down with one of the world's best is a unique opportunity and Adam asked some great questions.

You might have seen Yoann's' video on Treasure Trail already. If not, it's worth a watch. It's probably the hardest trail in town.

You probably won t see this combo of brands on one bike - what do you think of it
Not long now.

Many thanks to all the below sponsors for supporting Adam Price and this series:

There is one thing I'm really proud here... they didn't put subtitles when I talk hahahahaha Smile

I'm of course reading this in your accent

This needs to be upvoted a million times. I also read this in your accent.

Merci Yoann. MERCI for that video, the spirit it carries, the accent, that commited simplicity you give... simply. Kiss your dog for me. Smile

J’ai rien compris! Nice one Yoann!

Yoann must have some Australian in him, dropping F-bombs that consistantly

Just want to say @yoannbarelli that the last few video clips i have seen of your riding are so inspirational and make me want to ride my bike. Some of the lines in the video look easy but i am sure they are scary the first time you hit them.

I also love this series.

Yoann, I think my mom is in love with you. Also, she said your English is really good! Congrats for getting a 50 year old english professor hooked on mountain biking lol.

"you see Sam, he always super composed, relaxed and in the end: he kicks our ass".

This is my favorite thing on YouTube right now. Things I’ve learned far: 29ers are faster (duh), volume spacers will just slow you down, and Yoann Barelli rides for Spank, not Commencal like everyone thinks.
  • 11 0
Haha it’s their only shared sponsor, so makes sense from Adam/PB’s perspective to put it that way.
  • 2 1
I tried to up vote you twice but it didn't work.

This series, and especially this episode is the most valuable thing I've seen on Pinkbike. Thank you! Smartest, most prepared rider wins.

Once is definitely not going to be enough to absorb all the gold in this episode. And what a cool trail.

What Adam lacks in hair, he makes up for in balls. Holy shit!

I wish that worked for me.

Really enjoying this series. Watching this, it seems to me that one thing Yoann does really well that Adam could incorporate more is PUMPING EVERYTHING. Even on some of the short sections that they practice, you can tell that Adam has pure speed and then needs to hit the brakes when it gets too fast, whereas Yoann seems to subtly flow with the terrain more and get speed when needed from pumping. Not that I am a good enduro racer, but that's something that I always try to remind myself before races - that aggro isn't fast, smooth is fast and flowing with the terrain is fast. Helps me to not get in that weird state I sometimes get into when I want to win. Really interesting to follow along with, keep it up!

Not that what you said is entirely wrong, but styles still vary quite a bit at that level.

Look at Greenland vs pierron for example.

The biggest reminder in this series for me is how strategic EWS racing is from a endurance standpoint...I mean it should be obvious, but some of the guys appear to be at full throttle even when they're taking it easy, so hearing yoann talk about how important it is now to go full gas is a cool reminder and makes me appreciate the skill of enduro more than just considering it simply a less interesting alternative to DH (for me)

Can we take a moment though for the star of the show... that trail. Wow.
  • 17 7
We ride this trail without kneepads. Sometimes we even put videos of it on YouTube

 @leelau: Joey alert.

Super high level of riding in this episode.

 Woouuuuu fakin ‘ell Big Grin

 Yoann is f'in awesome.

I'm not sure if this is fair to say, but, Adam you seem to be getting your weight back as you go faster as compared to Yoann. This seems to lead to less front tire grip and then a rear tire skid. Just my observation. I'd be pooping my pants doing that trail so take it for what its worth. Keep up the great work.
  • 2 0
Its cuz they took all his volume spacers out...
  • 7 1
Everything is better with a little Yoann Barelli in it! Jacques Sparrow indeed.

No subtitles needed ... except for "adieu a bi-s'il êtes d'où roh" ... took me a few tries to realize that was "I do a BC enduro" ha.

This aspect of MTB riding is one of my favorites. Going out and sessioning different technical sections in order to learn how to connect things together. Getting to session them with a master like Yoann as a coach is such a gift. Adam you are a very lucky guy to be doing this. Things to remember when you’re really old that’ll put a smile on your face. Hats off to PB for putting this series together.

Best episode! Yoann is a beast!

Yoann's attitude about racing is everything a young grom should aspire to follow. Great tips in this segment btw and what a killer, killer trail system...
  • 4 0
Great episode! I feel like Adam would benefit from a sports psychologist next though, the questions he asked Yoann were on dealing with negative outcomes. It was quite polarising compared to Yoann's general positivity.
  • 6 0
That knolly from Yoann at the end!

AMAZING ADVICE!!!!!! Yoann may be able to help him get a sponsor from #REDBUTT hahaha Love it! What a Coach tho Wow!

This series is sweet as fuck!

Even Jackson got scared! Love it.

How tall is Adam? He has a 50mm rise bar on a 29er with a decent amount of spacers as well. I've never seen that much stack height on an enduro bike.
  • 2 0
Do you know why I have been watching that video 6 or 7 times already? I think it`s because I got a little addicted to Yoann`s mood and spirit, not mentionning his delicious french accent that most of us can appreciate Smile

Now back your regularly scheduled program. Great to see Barelli put the mountain in MTB...
  • 3 1
Next season - from pro to privateer. Racing as a privateer, but with the knowledge of what should be done to be on the podium, just with less stress.

Barelli, what a GC! Nice work Adam, good luck for Whistler, relax on the bike a little. You got this!

Best enduro skills content since Brendog schooled Mike Levy on how to ride!

Zou!!! Very impressed with The Zou's performance.

Enjoyed that one a lot. Interesting to hear YB's personal perspective on racing. What i would not give to have a few sessions on tech terrain like this with a pro....
  • 1 0
Watching Adam and Yoann do the same lines back to back is most excellent, helps highlight tiny differences in technique and skill that add up to big time differences.
  • 1 0
Loved it ! Really interesting to hear this kind of conversation between two racers. Thanks a lot and good luck for the season !

So.... Jared Leto is teaching enduro now, eh? Times are indeed strange, my friends.

I would say Larvacide is the hardest in town
  • 2 0
Exactly. Treasure just makes for prettier videos.
  • 1 0
aye. And that right line at the bottom of Larvicide with the exposure. Never cleaned it - one day....

Anyone else see a Yoann/ Cam McCaul collab? I feel like that would be a good time
  • 1 0
That ladder pop off, with your arms straight out is sort of the wrong way to do it frenchy?
  • 1 0
Loving these videos! Also, more Yoann videos please!
  • 1 0
