Video: Trials, Trails, Tricks and Jibs on the Ibis Mojo 4 with Pat Smage

I hurt my foot pretty bad back in early March and took the longest time off from real riding I have ever had. A few days after I got hurt, I received the Ibis Mojo 4 and started wondering what I could do on it. So, between icing sessions, I went into our woods day after day and looked, built, and hoped I would be able to ride what I had in mind. When I got back to riding regularly again, something was off and I just didn’t feel like myself. I was not even close to being ready to ride what I had plans for…

So I went out, day after day, and rode until I found my mojo again. Turns out, it was right underneath me, and I just had to put some time in on it! Learning a new bike while trying to get fitness, strength, timing and balance back was a good challenge that kept me busy and kept my mind occupied on bikes during this crazy time in our lives. Can’t wait to see what else I can do on this bike!

Huge thanks to my grandparents and parents for providing me this amazing playground for everything that has wheels. I have spent an incredible amount of time in that woods and I keep coming back for more. Also, thanks to my wife Hannah for filming and going to war with mosquitoes… seriously, they were even swarming the camera and got in some shots! We had to rush some things so they aren’t all perfect but mostly “good enough”.

Thanks for watching!

How come the white Mojo 4 can’t do all those tricks? Darn, I got the wrong color!

Hahaha great edit Pat, that looked super fun! Welcome to the club, you’re gonna enjoy that bike!

Wow, that was an amazing edit! Pat's ability on two wheels is incredible but it was missing that smiles for miles that your edits bring JKW!
  • 3 0
Ha ha Jeff, don't be too hard on ya self mate as your edits are equally rad.
  • 40 2
How the hell is he gonna PR and KOM when he's wasting all that time doing fun tricks? And he's not even on a 29er, this just doesn't make any sense! No one wants 27.5 bikes because strava times are the only reason to ride anymore!

Fantastic riding, amazing video, beautiful bike! Long live riding for fun! (and 27.5 wheels)

This is what happens when you let your ibis do the job

I am a simple man. I see Pat Smage, I click.

Since COVID killed racing, does that mean freeride is back? @pinkbke

 Free ride never left

I have known Pat since we were 12, nothing about this video surprises me, he has always been one of that baddest mother f'ers to ever get on two wheels.

That was amazing...and looked really fun. That has to be one of the top 5 bike-related videos I have ever seen. I think being able to jump up/around/through obstacles instead of having to get off and walk/climb over would be a super useful skill to have(and you look good doing it, too!) If you live in the sticks like me, anyway.

he should've said: "letting my mojo do the work"

Pat Smage and Chris Akrigg are two peas in a pod. The finest bike handling on the planet.

Whilst Danny Mac is over at the dark side doing nothing but hard selling overpriced emtbs, Pat is like, yea I’ll take you job.

Would love to see a Danny/5010 Pat/Mojo4 trial-off !!!

 Maybe you need fatter tires?

Awesome to see you on a "normal" bike, though I also love seeing what you can do on your fat bike.

 Also:

I always like Pat's "self-talk" edits without music. He says some hilarious stuff when he's pondering and attempting moves. This video of he and his girlfriend riding in Northwest Arkansas is awesome:

How is it that I have never seen or heard of this guy. Just wow... serious talent!
  • 4 0
And he is a multiple moto trials champ too...
  • 1 0
 @nicoMF: 10 time.
  • 4 0
Well that explains some... but he looks at home on a bike as well as anyone I have seen.
  • 1 0
He was riding a fat bike before, imagine.
  • 1 2
because its not 'cool' if your from somewhere besides CO, WA or BC!

Awesome. How do you do a static forward hop, so your back wheel ends up where your front wheel was, like he was doing across those angled sticks? Whenever i try i put all the effort i can summon and move about a ft forwards max, it doesnt look anything like when he does it, is there a pedal kick in there?
  • 5 1
yep, in a mid-low gear. it's called a J-hop, most of the pedaling motion is just a flick of the ankles. Pat is also a wizard, and can do these things in very subtle ways so it's hard to see.

@spacemanspiff06: +1 for your name! Yah for Calvin! (and Hobbes, of course)
  • 3 0
You can move even further than a wheelbase ... Some trials riders are able to drop from an obstacle like this! I am not so good at trial, but I can already go further than a wheelbase. You need to move your hips backwards and slightly down, lift your front pedal a little up and maintain pressure on it. Then as soon you start a pedal kick, you need to extend forward and slightly up. The pressure on your pedal helps to lift your front wheel, and your hips generate the forward motion

@spacemanspiff06: cheers, I'd better get practicing. Got the fundamentals of most trials stuff down, but this has always had me stumped.

Back in the day I rode a lot of street out in MT. Had a buddy who was pretty darn good at trials so we had to get decent as well and he helped us learn a lot. I recall it being called a "lurch", but there are plenty of names for it that mean the same thing. I got pretty good, could balance all day, pedal kick/lurch, hop around, rear wheel drops, etc, but the kicker comes from obstacle to obstacle. It's a mindFk, even 3 feet off the ground. You have to focus on getting to it, and somehow take your mind off the gap to get there and how far up you are. All those things take some incredible skill and a strong mindset to conquer. I probably had the technique but mentally it took a lot to overcome which I couldn't. I have SO much respect for all of the trials/street riders out there who are taking it to mind blowing levels.

I find these videos way more impressive than the usual "go fast and wreck berms" style videos. Jibbing FTW
  • 5 0
Wow ! He's not riding it, he's dancing it !
  • 4 0
So I'm thinking a game of bike with Wibmer, Pay and Danny Mac would be something worth watching! Awesome video!

And Josh Lewis can make the tea.

The man could ride a bike made of tin foil and not damage it!! He is so freakin smooth!!

 What a legend

Great video, amazing bike handling skills!
  • 3 0
Pat and Danny need a co-sponser. It would be awesome to see a collaboration edit.
  • 2 0
I've never heard of Pat. That was awesome. I thought it must have been some wild offspring of Chris Akrigg and Danny Macaskill = Danny Akrigg
  • 2 0
This is why i believe Ibis spec'd wrong suspension on this bike, all their pros are using piggy-backed shocked and stouter forks.
  • 2 0
Man, his riding skills are sic!!! I completely lot track how many cork screws he did... And he's running Manitou sus, sold!
  • 3 0
I really gotta learn some basic trials moves.
  • 2 0
Amaizing ! Original ! has lots of authenticity ! And I love it . The whole edit is spot on ! Congratiolations !

I think we would all like to see Pat, Danny, and Chris have a game of WHOSTHEBADDESTMOTHERFUCKERONTWOWHEELS. Please make this happen.

Sensational riding, good editing and nice music. Top end clip! Really amazing what these trials guys can do. Congratulations on a super result.
  • 1 0
Insane. Just insane. I've watched Pat's fat bike trials videos over and over again. This just takes it to a whole new sick and akriggy level! brilliant!

Awesome timing because I just posted an interview/podcast I did with pat.

@Psf1 You rule Pat! thanks for letting me ride your unicycles at the World Trials in TN wayyyy back when over a decade ago
  • 2 0
Just let the Ibis do its job
  • 1 0
This is all easy but riding backwards without spinning the cranks is very difficult.
  • 2 0
I’d love to know what rear hub he’s running. Sime kind of freecoaster hub that takes a cassette?
  • 1 0
@azaussie: For real. Was wondering what hub that was given all the trials pedal pressure moves and that freecoasting. Two rear wheels?
  • 2 0
@azaussie: A spacer in place of gears I'm guessing.
  • 1 0
Pat is able to coast backwards because he put in a custom 3d printed spacer in place of some gears. On his youtube channel, he said he'll have some details in a future video and said it is a lot of fun to have as an option!
  • 1 0
@RowdyAirTime: Nice-looking forward to find out more about this spacer
  • 2 0
Unbelievable skills, makes loosedog Lewis look like a complete amateur!
  • 2 0
You mean a world champion Moto trials rider is better at trials than a downhiller bmx rider who likes to jib?

Shocking!
  • 2 0
Wait this guy used to be a world champion in moto trials ?!

It’s a whole new perspective then I thought he was just a regular mortal like all of us here @Hogfly:
  • 1 0
how is he doing all that backwards stuff? is that some sort of freecoaster hub?
  • 1 0
I'm guessing an idler gear. In his new bike video he says he's using an Ibis wheel set.
  • 1 0
Spacer in place of a gear (or two)
  • 2 0
@hangdogr: Yes. Pat put in a custom 3d printed spacer in place of some gears. On his youtube channel, he said he'll have some details in a future video.
  • 2 0
WHAT!? Must watch this is jaw dropping.
  • 1 0
Sure it should have been... He introduces some moves never seen before though

@rossp: Now that Pat's on a Ibis, probably an E-Ripmo is coming soon, and I'm sure it will be fairly light for a EMTB?
