If you thought Fort William had some track complaints, wait till you see this one. Leogang looks like it's one giant BMX track and riders are livid (or at least pretending to be...). Of course our man on the ground, Wyn Masters, is on the case and getting you all the chat from Austria.
@endlessblockades: i just saw a POV of Troy Brosnon following Brendog and I didn't see a single rock ... it's quite sad. I loved the brutal root section in Fort Bill
@leopaul: that's fine but most "protected" World Cup keyboard riders would still have tightly clenched sphincters riding this course at 2/3 the speed of a practice run.
@usmbc-co-uk: Lac Blanc is easily the best bikepark in a 200mile radius and with only an hour drive from my home it's my absolute favorite in the non-alpine world. But having ridden both, I feel like overall Leogang is a much tougher track. It is a lot longer and at times it's ridiculously steep and also really rough. It might not seem like it on camera and maybe they cleaned it up too well for this rounds WC. But did you actually ride it yourself? Because I can tell you it's not remotely as easy and smooth as one might think.
I think this is one of the main reasons why Enduro is getting more and more people into it, DH is loosing the main attraction that "into the woods" felling that have you wanting to get on your bike the next time off. Jumps are cool, berms are cool but for me mountain biking is more than that.
I love World Cup DH races. Been hooked on it since the late 90's. That said, the constant whining and bitching about 'tracks too hard' or 'tracks to easy' or 'tracks too fast' or 'tracks too slow' or 'that wheel size is.......' or ' this track should change this. Oh it changes, lets still bitch' by everyone from the racers to the commentators her is such a F'ing drag. Holy sh*t is sounds like a bunch of teenagers bitching and moaning constantly. Embarrassment honestly
agreed, if anything its a good thing as it highlights different strengths in each race, racers have to be good at everything and one guy isn't going to win every race cause he has a 4km man made rock garden in his backyard to practice on.
@LavenderGooms: That's just it. I have and still do. Race NORBA semi pro a few years. I still ride DH here in Colorado. Race a few races here and there. The bitching has exploded lately. I'm no UCI fan trust me. But damn!!! Haha
@bman33: to quote the great Team Robot (RIP): "It's the way the world is supposed to work. Everyone being pissed off and complaining feels a lot like downhill racing, which is the spiritual center of my bike world."
@wiscobiker: Never said that I don't want a challenge. I am commenting on the enormous amount of bitching the last few months/races. They bitch about wheel size, this track is too hard, this track is too easy, etc etc.
The one constant with hosting a DH, or an Enduro for that matter, is listening to people bitch about the track. Too flat, too steep, too smooth, too rough, there is a climb in it...Hearing a guy finish a 12 minute Enduro stage and bitch (that was a f-ing cross country course!) about the climbing when there was one 15 second climb and another that might go 20 sort of cured me of trying to make folks happy.
Or maybe it didn't, given that I'll be out this weekend trying to add a couple of minutes to one of the stages...
Give me a good, epic, rough and technical XC race like Downieville and beers with my friends after. Any day of the week. So much less posing, so much less whining.
I, too, really enjoy watching the riding, especially recently. The complaining about the woods section at Ft. William was, to a degree, justified, as it seems most of the courses these days are speedways with a little bit of "find the best line and straight line it" tech thrown in. So from the perspective of having ridden that kind and only that kind of track in the last while, I can understand. But from one weekend to the next, saying a course is too hard and then bitching that another one is too easy is simply whiny bitch bullsh*t. I can appreciate the fact that consistency is lacking throughout the circuit but it seems the fact that they're travelling the world and not shuttling to the next trail on the hill is lost on (some more than others) quite a few of the competitors. It really is laughable that so many people can find so much to complain about whilst living a dream.
The only thing worse than hearing racers bitch and complain about the tracks is hearing non-racers bitch and complain about the racers bitching and complaining
It's claimed around the interwebs that Nico rode a Zaskar at the 1995 Worlds in Kirchzarten, but the tape shows otherwise. Both he and King are on an LTS: www.youtube.com/watch?v=311SnkHzu9Y
There's a TV show in Britain called, 'Can't pay we'll take it away', and it's about people who haven't payed off debts and so these guys lawfully come and take away their possessions to make up for said debt. Bernard Kerr was on it. Something to do with a rental van and to cut a long story short he had to pay up ÂŁ3k. If you wanna watch it it's season 5 episode 10
He was basically on a show in the UK called If you can't pay, we'll take it away. Baylifts come around and ask for the money you owe to someone or a company, or they'll remove items to cover the costs.
@kerberos: If you watch it then you'll see Bernie comes across very well which is why they can joke about it... despite hanging out in his pants of course Oh and leaving the back door open while he sleeps- schoolboy error! It's not like he's a master criminal of multiple identities scamming grannies out of their winter heating money, chill bru
Remember when enduro was lame. Haha. Those courses are way more gnarly. There were option lines in Whistler last year I didn't even think about. Pffft. I may not even set an alarm for this.
Maybe Leogang wants to showcase this track as a marketing ploy to let all those XC cross-overs and beginner wanna-be's and one timers with the family say, "Hey, that's the WC Pro track? I can ride that. I think I'll give Dhing a shot, it looks easy enough for me." That way they get the crowds and unfortunately, then ski resorts keep catering to them with paved roads left and right.
B*tch and moan. Moan and b*tch. Chrissakes. I'd also like to feel what's it like to whine about something when I'm being paid to travel the world to ride mountain bikes and have fun all the time.
Travel the world riding the newest bikes wearing fresh gear. And complain about the track they have to race. I'd gladly take their place with all smiles. End of the weekend the fastest time wins not matter the track.
So under the Austrian trail grading system is most of that a blue run with the tree sections being red? Good to see the best riders in the world been challenged.
Going back to the Klunker Age...
Just type in 'Can't pay well take it away season 5 episode 10'. Maybe you can't watch it in the US?
Wynning.
