Crazy 70 km/h MTB footage from Mick Hannah and Fabien Cousinié, as they take on the first ever 10 rider downhill race at the Pinnacle Bike Championship, in Waterville valley, USA. Footage from UR team with Sony Action Cam.

Bryn Atkinson - 1st Place:

"All in all this race turned out to be pretty fun, and the concept was good. I do think there is room for this type of event to take off with the right support from our industry. Having said that, the helmet cams don't do a track like this justice. It was mega gnarly, doing up to 40mph on a steep grass ski slope, littered with bomb holes, rocks and wet grass. It really was impressive seeing a track like this ridden by some of the best. With a few top WC guys showing up for $10,000- I knew the final was going to be wild, everyone was going for it. I took a risk lining up on the outside in lane 9 not wanting to be inside of Mick, Simmons or Fabien, as those guys were starting stronger than me earlier in the day. I ended up getting the snap when it counted, cut over on the rest of the field, and rode it like I stole it to the botttom. Stoked to come away with the win!!"

Mick Hannah - 2nd Place:

"I've been racing for a while, doing all kinds of races, I knew that the terrain here was really rough even if it doesn't look like it. 10 riders going down at the same time on one gnarly track, hitting big jumps and crazy speed, this one was definitely something new and I really enjoyed it. I won qualifying and all my heats but in finals I had a bad start and battled my way from 6th to 2nd! My shoulder is feeling better and better, I can't wait to race next year!"

Fabien Cousinié - 3rd Place:

"I always love try different style of racing and this race format was definitely something I was curious about. When I first got to the venue, I thought the track was going to be super easy because of the grassy terrain, but during first practice I almost broke my ankle hitting one of the hidden rocks. You'd be a fool to think that you can make it down in one piece on a hardtail.
I used my 4X background to take a good start and make some passes to end up 3rd, something that I'm really stoked about! Especially, as a team owner, after this busy trade show marathon. It was definitely a new experience racing with those guys, at 70km/h, bar to bar, I can't imagine how good Pinnacle racing is going to be once it gets more momentum."

Matt Simmonds - 4th - Place:

"Flying into Boston then driving up to Waterville Valley Park I was a bit unsure about how this new and exciting race format was going to workout. After a few scary moments in practice it was clear that the ten man finals in the afternoon was going to be wild. A crowd started to assemble and it was time to race. Great starts from Bryn, Fabien & also super high speed over takes from Mick left me in 4th spot. I honestly can’t believe how fast we were going over such unpredictable terrain. All in all a great weekends racing & I can see there being a future for events like this if the right sponsors and infrastructure was to be put in place."

I'll admit it. It was a lot cooler than I expected after the course preview.
  • 51 4
Agreed. I thoroughly enjoyed Hannah's forward mounted potato cam as well.
  • 13 4
Agreed too. I think after watching a season of WC races the initial wide grassy track looked pretty boring. The race actually looked awesome and I'm glad to see WC riders out there to support it. Maybe they should make it a 4 man race and call it super 4x? Add some gaps, tables etc . Way more props and high fives at the finish line with 10 people crossing.
  • 20 2
Lets just hope the big disappointmeent everybody will remember wont kil the idea.
It obviously has potential, potential that hasnt been used.
Massive jump, high speed corners, not 20km/h off camber turns and some wooden ramps.
I hate to say but maybe only some big sponsor like Red Bull has the money, potential and experience to lauch this kind of format.

Reminds me of downhill domination. Too bad they weren't throwing water bottles at each other

 mad turnout from the crowd........

looked awesome, i would have really like to see a helicam though, would have made the overtakes more visible and epic

@chinaboy There was such event planed earlier this year, by Red bull of course, but then track got shut down for enviromental or safety reason and whole thing canceled... www.pinkbike.com/news/red-bull-wide-open-2014.html "> www.pinkbike.com/news/red-bull-wide-open-2014.html

This would be completly insane, check closed track ride here: http://dirtmountainbike.com/news/red-bull-wide-open-2014-cancelled.html

That looked AWESOME!!!!! Almost resembled an offroad MOTOGP race, with the all the stats at the bottom of the screen!

I was there to support a local event and to show my 3 kids (2, 4, and 6 yrs) some pro level racers...They had an absolute blast and Sik Mik was extremely nice to my boys. He handed over his bike to let them check if out and gave em' all high fives on his way to the lift. I was quite disappointed in the turnout though. It's the inauguration, but still the turnout was very weak. The head cams gave a great perspective on the battle!! Very cool edit...

I could feel all the power going throw the suspension at the start gate

Looked way better than preview. put berms on all corners and put real jumps and it would be so sick.!!
  • 2 0
So much potential, and one of the great things is this is probably more marketable than traditional downhill. It could be used as a good platform not only as a cool discipline but a stepping platform to improving downhill coverage.
  • 1 0
Mik is smart enough to go for this instead of Rampage.
  • 1 2
As i said...this would be a good Mario Kart track...the race was crowed, messi and fun
  • 2 1
Definitely has potential. What it needs is a few technical sections/slow corners with line choice to provide overtaking opportunities.
  • 2 1
People can say what they will about the event - the winnings here are better than most events I've seen - definitely worth racing if you can win it no matter how you look at it...
  • 5 0
 @autumnmedia
How sad is that that this has better winnings that more deserving events.
  • 1 0
True my friend - it's all about creating a fun event and making it worth the while of the risk and reward!

Internet warriors found the track very lame in the previous article. Pro riders had tons of fun racing it in real life.

I hate people using word "hater". It is a nazi term for: I think it is rad, But I am insecure about that opinion and need a confirmation from a group for boosting self esteem. Because I am so insecure I am anticipating that someone might not like my opinion so I am going to give it a big emotional shout to eventually silence the opposition. I may want to discourage them further by saying something like: "let the hating begin" as a preemptive strike. Because I've put so much emotion to it, I expect no objection. Any person still objecting will make me feel desperate to call him "hater" and as everyone knows, in modern world wwre values are created by Fox News, "hate" is not cool. A hater can be affiliated with all sorts of bad things like racism or homophobia, definitely not with critical thinking.

If you ask me, that thing is awesome, I see great future for this sport as a way of riding off the trail, truly carbing your own line. I can even imagine ski resort cleaning parts of forests from big branches and stocks so that one could ride a bike between trees. A huge potential for fatbikes!

Cheers!
  • 7 5
Waki, your wisdom often makes me smile.

"Hater" It is a nazi term for: I think it is rad, But I am insecure about that opinion, saying something like: "let the hating begin" as a preemptive strike.

This is a perfect example of that Smile

Still I think this race was a bit lame. Perhaps Red Bull Wide Open would have been better. In fact I am almost sure it would have been.

Personally I will always prefer going as fast as I can with tree branches whipping my helmet and bars, to wide flat out style tracks. I do not get the world wide obsession with tracks like A-Line, but thats just my personal preference. Must say this multi-rider format could have serious potential but I don't think that potential was fully realised here....
  • 7 6
WAKI- think for a minute before you post. I was referring to 95% of PB hating on this event on every update calling it easy, just riding down a grassy hill, etc. when it turned out the riders thought it was gnarly and really fun. Why would I be insecure about being stoked on a new mtb event?

gabriel- I completely agree with you after seeing some dude's gopro preview of it and it sucks it was cancelled but I'm happy at least this idea came to fruition in one way or another. Remember, this is a smallish EC resort with no previous focus on MTBing and cannot be compared to Livingno, and you could kinda say this was WV's first attempt at a mtb race. I'm sure they'll make it a crap ton better if the want is there because it takes a shitton of money to make a course (Red Bull Wide Open was around 400k I believe). They weren't going to go all out with an experimental race format especially when they're not solid in the MTB market.
  • 7 2
i think waki's comment was more in reference to the general use of the word hater, especially on pinkbike rather than particularly about you. yes you were the spark that prompted the comment, but he did go on to say he actually agreed with you in this case that the race was cool. more so than myself it seems. anyway, don't really know why I'm defending him, I'm sure he can do so himself. just bored i guess. those dashboard updates are hard to resist clicking on...
  • 8 3
Well I'm sorry cause I didn't like it, without hate. I found as exciting as having a warm shower. My opinion.
  • 1 4
Waki gets so many downvotes, never seen a comment from him with more than 3 upvotes haha
  • 3 1
haha, and my comment saying how i liked his comment currently has 5 upvotes to his 5 downvotes. silly pinkbikers Razz
  • 4 2
 @WAKI...sometimes...snoooze...just fyi.
  • 4 2
@ WAKIdesigns, Do you take vodka shots before posting??
  • 6 2
Scott - I did not mean you in particular but hey - after all I listened to your call. WHat I wrote is not only about "haters" it applies also to people shouting overvaselinated praises to people whom they don't know at all: "Palmer what a legend!!!". It's throwing a glove, not an honest praise. GrunderS - I got over 200 negprops on one comment once, and nearly 500 on several comments under one article. I could not care less... at least they keep my ego in place hahaha Big Grin
  • 2 0
Well this is where I'm gonna have to disagree with you now waki. Praise shouldn't be scorned. Disagreed with maybe, argued against maybe, but never scorned. I kinda think that is a perfect example of ego gone wild. The opinion that your derision of someone like Palmer is somehow more valuable than anothers respect for him or what he did.
  • 3 3
I am not questioning athletes results, rather individual reason of such praise, which often is for own purpose: Peaty is a legend and I am his prophet. You can smell those from a mile.
  • 1 0
seems an unhappy way to look at the world to me. oh well, each to their own. carry on.

Why? Only if you consider that having such complexes is a "bad" thing. I find them natural. I barely see distiniction between false praise and false hating. You see, people rarely look at a guy having a negative comment and think: he may be alright in everything else he does. While a bloke having a positive blast on public forum can easily be a douche with plenty of negative thoughts inside. It is off course better to look at the brighter side of life but only as long as you don't expect it from others and infortunately we are bullied into positive thinking, not into true is. We are expected to show up with cool persona. People want to see only the nice part of you and so they care only for a nice part of a hero, they praise this one, they lie to themselves that hero inorder to be a hero, must make plenty of sacrifice that praising guy would probably never accept. It's tricky, but getting deeper into it helps you find authentic compassion and empathy rather than some cliche.

Cheers!
  • 5 0
Waki, you talk the biggest piles of utter, nonsensical garbage I have ever seen and I really wish you would just stop. You kind of ruin any discussion you comment on, and make the comment section of this site even more tedious than usual.
  • 3 0
+1 @redrook, glad someone said it.
  • 4 0
I think more often than not, praise for someone like Palmer or Peat should just be taken at face value. I can agree that some praise can in some cases come from the same insecurities that cause people to say they hate something they don't, or be fearful of saying they like something without the "let the haters hate" defense. But I also think that everyone suffers from this insecurity to a certain extent. To act as tho one is totally above this sort of behavior is usually a sign of even greater insecurity. Some people have the self belief to not need these "let the haters hate" crutches, but there are very few people out there so totally free of narcissism that they don't even give them a moments thought. The Dalai Lama perhaps. Or someone with a serious coke habit.

It is fair enough to comment on these things, even to discuss them openly, but to scorn someone for not being perfect, kinda suggests a run away ego, and that a little introspection may be required. Further to that, to scorn someone who is no doubt imperfect, for the fairly nice act of praising someone they have some respect for, kinda goes back to the original case of insecurity. "They said they like something, and I can abate my insecurities somewhat by taking the much easier to defend stance that I don't like it and rain down scorn upon them for the amusement of my peers, and a nice ego boost for me".

(add some sort of "in my humble opinion" or "ooh this has all got a bit deep" self defense remark here)
  • 20 1
I desperately hope this catches on. Imagine a race with

Minnaar, Hill, Hart, Bryceland, Bruni, Atherton, Gwin, and Peaty?

That's like the superbowl of DH.

It looked super pedally so I'd say some of the more skills over fitness riders like Sam Hill would stuggle
  • 4 3
super pedally? were we watching the same video? it's more of who can get out of the start gate the fastest.
  • 6 0
One must pedal out of the gate....
I would put my money on any former BMX racer. They know the art of a gate start, are used to "full contact" racing, and have the sprinting abilities.
  • 2 0
Sorry for my ignorance. I looked again and the only real time they were pedalling was out the gate like you said. It really those make you wonder how steep it must of been to reach those speeds without pedalling.
  • 15 1
 1. Looked like hella fun but hard to translate that to TV without proper jumps, more exciting features.
2. Coverage was really poor.
3. Timing was worse, same time as Rampage build up and those Mammoth games.

Be good to see this as part of a series like Crankworx so the coverage, timing, athlete list and courses can be improved on, but sheeeet who doesn't love a grassy flat turn?!
  • 2 0
 4. Really poor turnout of feet on the ground (again poor advertising and timing?). Where are the massive crowds of fans that were supposed to pack out the finish area?
5. To have exciting 10 man racing you need maybe 30 or 40 guys who are all within a few seconds of each other on a long track which just won't happen. What you end up without this is a procession from top to bottom without the close racing on the way down. It looked like only 10 fast guys turned up so the run in the video looked ok but you need a ton more talented guys and girls to have more heats and racing. This will be hard to overcome if it is to grow IMO

I think point 1) is their biggest issue. For all the bellyaching beforehand it seems like the riders were the only people to enjoy this... and ironically the TV audience that this event was designed for would have been massively underwhelmed.

Would I love to ride something like that... yes. Would I want to watch it like that... no
  • 16 4
yes, they are riding fast and its gonna be sketchy coming down a hill fast - but it was not what was promoted in ANY way, and its difficult to get past that congrats to those that took part, regardless of expectations its still gnarly - its a start so maybe they can learn from this and run with it
  • 18 9
Saw the preview and thought this was gonna be super dull to watch.... Unfortunately there weren't any surprises. It was super dull to watch
  • 10 1
It looks like the sort of race you would have with your mates when you were a kid
  • 4 0
Finally getting back where we started. Mtb racing reboot, let's get our priorities straight, it's about racing, not about the products!
  • 3 0
Umm, also it's supposed to be fun?
  • 2 0
Fun comes with the love of the sport. So it's already a package deal
  • 2 0
Yo Ddown, I did those races coz they were fun Smile
  • 1 0
Haha, hopefully my sarcasm came through in my previous comment. I just meant sometimes it's nice to worry about nothing but having fun.
  • 8 2
Needs work but, been saying it for years, if you don't get the idea of eight or ten man racing and how gnarly and fun it is.. well, there's no helping you, have fun with your stopwatch. Good to see a lot of humble pie being eaten after so many knee jerk negative comments. Saying you were wrong is reserved for the truly great.
  • 6 0
Ok "I pooped on it like all the others. I will admit it looked cool with other riders. I am not afraid to say I was WRONG. It could use a few changes but a good start. Please do it again next year.
  • 6 0
People can say what they want about that not being a "DH Race". Those guys all sounded like they had a blast at the bottom and thats what its all about.
  • 1 0
Unfortunately that's not what its all about, maybe in reference to riding fun is everything. But this is not "just riding" this is their job (and they are competing for $10000). This event is not being put on so that Mick Hannah can "sound like he had a blast at the bottom". many people invested money and have an interest in more than just "fun". Its being put on to attract spectators, advertisement, and at the end of it all hopefully money. So if we (the spectators) in general have a problem with something it should be voiced and I don't understand why that's such a problem. Of course they sounded like they had a blast, they got flown there probably all expenses paid to shred for a few days and possibly win 10 grand. All im saying is that's not really what matters in this case, what matters is that spectators enjoy (and come with $ to Kamikaze bike games), and a positive/exciting image is put forth for all the sponsors and mountain biking.
  • 1 1
I think you need to just shut up already. Every time you run your mouth you prove how little you know.
  • 7 3
I have to say, when I first saw this course I thought it was pretty lame. But having to gain or maintain position with other riders on the track makes it a little more exciting. I'd like to see a few more of these types of races.
  • 4 0
Cool something different. Wikid. Try not focusing just on the track PBers!! 10 riders going downhill at once is not going to work on a typical timed course. As uusual most here like beige and everything to be different, as long as it's beige!
  • 3 0
Well said, Maverik. And this is the first thing I've seen that has restarted my hope that gravity mtb still has a future with progression! True RACING! The industry won't like it because what I see is a test of rider skill and instinct...not "how much money can we throw at the podium..."
  • 3 0
I would love to do that coming from motorcross I like the idea of block passing etc. Thought the track needs some work like the one red bull was going to put on big drops gaps and berms and this will be awesome something that is more entertaining for people that dont follow mtb regularly. overall lot of potential to be great for the sport
  • 3 0
Did anyone else really get reminded of road racing from this? It's interesting, people drafting, high speed corners, etc..

Could we somehow turn this into a new style of racing? I'm imagining some kind of "big mountain" DH race, 10 guys going peak to valley on a wide open mountainside, go from high speed scree up top, so grass, down into the trees, maybe..
  • 4 0
this is going to be about head-to-head racing. Shoot it from overhead, and dial out the courses with color coded zones, run-outs, and safety barrier and you will have a sweet DH version of Moto GP. this will be cool...
  • 4 1
It sounds to me like this is the future of DH. Anyone remember 4x racers saying they wished it was more like MTB and less like bmx. Well here you go. MTB crossed with the closest we can come to supercross sounds pretty nuts. I was skeptical too watching the preview vid though
  • 3 0
Well the riders thought it was fun. Relax, boys. It will get better with the right support. Who knows, maybe wide tracks and 4-6 guys racing at the same time will catch on and birth a whole new generation of mountain BMXers (MBMX).
  • 2 0
Now if Waterville can start up some actual DH mountain biking on the mountain instead of on the kiddie slope nearby, they might attract a lot more riders and spectators for anything else in the future. My guess this event won't happen again.
  • 3 0
I little more moto influence to the track maybe a rhythm section and definitely more line choice in the corners= my favorite new style of racing.
  • 4 0
The riders say it was awesome, but what do they know? It must have sucked because the armchair racers say it did.
  • 5 0
All that hype, and all we get is a helmet cam!!??!!??
  • 6 2
The crowd at the finish was massive to haha

Crazy speed, gnarly terrain, WC riders... That's fantastic, but nothing new in Europe: ever heard abot Mega/Maxi Avalanche :-) ? By the way, I'd like to see more often this kind of competition.
  • 2 1
The mega is not a spectator friendly sport, and pretty fucking limited to where it can happen. I have no interest in such a race and don't even care who enters wins loses etc. Yawn.
  • 1 0
My friend, go race the Mega and tell me it's not a spectator sport. This was my first year doing it and people get extremely into it! You have hundreds of people ripping at 80kmh down glaciers and more gnar than you can imagine. Ever seen a 30 biker (all pros) pileup down a 60 degree slope into a rock garden followed by a wooden ladder? Tell me that wouldn't be a f*cking riot to watch? The locals gets extremely into it (very cool for an amateur rider to be greeted by people lined up on the sides of the tape shouting ALLEZ ALLEZ ALLEZ!) Much of the course can be (and is) filmed by helicopters. Its also no more limited to where it can happen than something like Redbull Rampage is. You may not care about it, but fortunately for us your opinion doesn't represent the 2500 riders, thousands of fans/sighsteers who happen to be there and watch it, and all the film crews/drones/photographers. If you thought that the above event was interesting/gnar in any way you should look up some Mega videos. No "spectator" would watch Megavalanche and then come watch this and give it the time of day. Just my opinion. (I don't think the format is bad, the race is bad or have any problem with the concept.)
  • 3 0
anyone else see the old school 50 tooth chain rings coming back with this sort of racing so they can gain more speed?
  • 1 0
Suggestion: add a Cyclocross race at same day same venue, and all those cx racers would love to see this afterwards - instant crowd, especially in New England. Especially with adjacent Beer Gardens!!!
  • 6 1
 Katy Perry.
  • 2 1
 Is bangin!
  • 3 0
It's a shame that they cancelled red bull wide open that track looked promising with riders like Lacondeguy in the mix
  • 3 0
That looked like so much fun. It's different but hey, I would do this in a heartbeat
  • 5 3
I stand corrected. I bashed this a bit but this was truly a unique type Fawesome (f*cking awesome). This was damn sketchy from top to bottom.
  • 3 0
Listening to how stoked the top 5 were at the finish line, that must have been serious fun.
  • 1 0
Looks freaking good. I think this could turn into something more, and it looks like something we could push for more mainstream viewing as it should be easier to cover and will have a lot more action in it.
  • 3 0
That is very cool!! DOWNHILL DOMINATION HAHA!!
  • 2 0
they should have just stuck with this video rather than showing everyone the course preview that everyone shitted on.
  • 5 1
 Sketchy and intense!
  • 6 3
 That was actually pretty sick!
  • 3 0
loved it....so much fun,,would like to see more 4 sure
  • 3 1
More events like this please, you could have a 'legends' category with the likes of Shaun Palmer riding. Great idea!
  • 2 0
Bryn leads start to finish after the hole shot, couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Congrats.
  • 2 0
no wonder that guy won he is riding a norco !!!!!
  • 7 6
While it is exciting that someones trying to develop new race formats, I would much rather watch standard wc dh.
  • 1 1
^^true but not enough races means you need filler races. This works and with little risk of major injuries to pros.
  • 2 0
this is how they should race frost bike
  • 2 0
Prolly the first time Bryn has won a race in a while lol
  • 1 0
It's like Downhill Domination in real life! Just without the bottle throwing and 360s haha
  • 5 6
When they said speeds of nearly 60 mph, it was a typo, they meant 60 kph. Haha this corse sucks balls. That preview of the Redbull wide open course was rediculously tough looking. It's like a double wide World Cup course.
  • 5 1
My bike says you couldn't TOUCH that speed on this course even running it alone. fuck your internet hero bullshit.
  • 2 0
I'm calling them out on saying that it's the pinacle of dh racing. Yeah f*cking right! I am sure even your dumb ass agrees with me that it isn't. It's clearly not the hyped race they said it would be. Go f*ck yourself! Unless you REALLY think it's the baddest race out there?! Then I'll forgive you for being stupid and ignorant.
  • 1 0
 I repeat my previous statement.
  • 1 1
Then you confirmed that you are still an idiot by process of elimination! Hahahaha dumb ass!
  • 1 0
whatever it takes to feel better about yourself.
  • 4 2
well that sucked... where were the spectators
  • 9 2
$10 to park + $35 to watch (standing), or $70 from the seats? That's where the spectators were. I don't know one local going to this. Most would take that 45 bucks down the road to Highland, or some other place where they can actually ride.
This was a cool idea, but the marketing behind it was insulting. "...plunging off 40 foot drops and reaching speeds of 60mph."
  • 3 0
35$ or 70$ !?!?! That is nuts! I wouldn't even consider going if I was a 5 minute walk down the street. Comparing it to ALL the other events which are always free. WOW
  • 3 1
 megavalanche? Errr... lame or what.
  • 3 0
 I hope the check clears!
  • 1 0
Maybe that format should be presented at Mammoth Mountain as 21st century Kamikaze race? Smile
  • 3 3
How gnarly it actually was is pretty irrelevant when it LOOKS like this.....
  • 4 2
 Pretty sick
  • 3 3
They sound dissapointed, like 'It could of been great with the right organistion, maybe next time'
  • 2 0
That sounds spot on really. Great idea, needs work.
  • 1 0
it was the first of its kind, give em a break! The first step is the hardest! I for one REALLY enjoy the fact that this wasnt blown sky high by Redbull or Monster, etc. THIS is a race I might get myself back into the game for. Drag racing on bicycles. Hell yes.
  • 2 0
 better future than 4x!!!
  • 2 1
This isn't a new type of racing; anyone else remember Super D?
  • 1 0
This NEEDS to evolve into DH BMX!
  • 2 0
 Yeah Bryn!!
  • 1 0
I still think they should use WOOD at Rampage.

 Finally! True racing!
