4 brands have been granted access to RockShox Flight Attendant on its launch - Canyon, YT Industries, Trek and Specialized - and all of them have models that are either available now or will be in the near future specced with this new electronic tech. If you want to learn more about the technology itself, check out Mike Levy's explainer, here, or Mike Kazimer's review, here but this article is a rundown of the bikes that will be running the system and their specs and price. As you might expect, this new tech doesn’t come cheap. Let's dig into all the details below.

Hey, any advertorial we write is clearly marked as such. There’s no agenda here other than to give a run down of the bikes that have been released today with Flight Attendant and, more importantly, see how much it adds to the cost. It’s similar to a range round up that we do when bigger bikes are released, e.g: m.pinkbike.com/news/range-overview-2021-trek-slash.html?trk=rss
  • 19 10
Even Ben Cathro videos are advertorials now
  • 60 15
@Dogl0rd: dude, it’s the internet and it’s ALL based around a capitalist society!?

I love the fact everyone whines about the “outside” take over and somehow things it’s unethical.

Do you (or your parents) go to work for free because it’s “just not right to ask for money, for the work you do”!?
I’d subscribe to outside just to filter out the petty, whining little bitches.
  • 2 0
+1 on the outside takeover just to quarantine kooks who dont get it there
  • 10 1
@2-1RacingUK: bs, it is possible to make actual content that isn't an advert
  • 1 0
@slayersxc17: You'll know when the paywall really does go up.
  • 9 1
@jamessmurthwaite: Oh Smurfwaite. We're still butthurt. Let us bitch a little. It's all in good fun...mostly
  • 2 3
@Dogl0rd: go show me. People make personal videos for the sole purpose of selling themselves. Be it to validate their ego through praise from others (a payment on of sorts) or to try and gain something from it IE: sponsorship.
  • 2 1
@2-1RacingUK: Real content shows through and I think most people can tell the difference and are smart enough to know when they are being peddled crap, whether that crap is ego or a whoops strap.

When people make content for the love of it it is clear. It is also clear when the business aspect moves to the forefront and eclipses the content, which is why people are so frustrated with pb
  • 7 5
Hahaha really @Dogl0rd: so the higher calibre of “content” means it’s made solely for the love of it….?! The love of a pay check maybe, of the sale of products but not solely for the love of the editorial process.

Yes, there is a level of satisfaction in producing something that you feel is worthy of praise but come on!!!! In this same baited breath of hyper critical criticism, you are also wanting a website to constantly produce content that satisfies your need to be entertained, are you not?!

If it’s not comments of “oh, it’s just another product I don’t want to buy and I’m not interested in reading”; it’s comments of negativity aimed at people trying to make a living.

@mikeLevey: @jamessmurthwaite: @brianpark: - you guys should set up a new reality edit, involving all these “Armchair editorial prodigies” and their revolutionary ability to whip up mountain bike journalistic process.

I’d Buy that for a $Dollar (a month).
  • 1 0
@Dustfarter: I wish I could upvote this more.
  • 2 0
 "sponsored" tag is missing
  • 6 0
@2-1RacingUK: like I said, when the marketing business side of the content eclipses the content itself, that's when it becomes sh:t content. If you pay attention you can tell when this happens. No need to explain further.
  • 5 0
 It's not an advertorial.

It's a listicle.
  • 2 1
@Dogl0rd: what the F are you talking about. You started off moaning that this is an advertorial.
I see it as service. The PB team have told me what bikes have the new parts on.
If I don’t want the INFORMATION I’ll finish reading and move on.
  • 2 1
@Dogl0rd: "Real content shows through and I think most people can tell the difference and are smart enough to know when they are being peddled crap"

100% this, I think @2-1RacingUK is one of these people that clearly can't tell the difference.
  • 2 2
@Freakyjon: I beg to differ mate, but everyone is entitled to their subjective opinion. The downfall is when people become so lead my an ideology that they can’t admit that there is more than just 100% one-way thinking about something.

Content is always produced for a reason, that will always have a product to highlight. What you call “peddling crap” could be exactly what another person wants.

Summary: if you think it’s crap content, don’t waste your time looking at it, or waste even more of your time complaining about something you didn’t need to read/view.

@pinkbike: I’ll take two of everything….. hahaha.
  • 3 2
@2-1RacingUK: I need them to add a "Whiny little bitches" filter to the front page.
  • 1 1
@grnmachine02: hahahaha. I’ll only request 5% of the earnings off the earnings from it. No one works or does things totally for free as well as, I work for the love of gaining gratification after all.…………

Really surprised that there isn't an XC bike on this initial list. Always thought this tech would be more appealing on the type of rides where stopping wasn't a thing. Most people stop for a 5 minute yap before dropping into a trail on an enduro bike and have no problem flicking a lever. Granted we've all forgotten more than once and end up riding the toughest trail of the day locked out but still.
  • 5 0
I certainly would not pay the surplus on the XC bike. Definitely not worth it since I have a cable lockout that gets a decent amount of use, but even if there was no option for that I would just leave it open. The only time you really feel the unnecessary movement is in an all-out sprint or a very specific subset of steep but smooth surface climbs. They are built to pedal while wide open and still provide the platform. This tech as it currently exists makes sense for bikes that are designed for pure suspension performance in open mode. They can change all the ratios to get the best sensitivity, support, and feedback while going downhill, then fall back on the flight attendant to make it pedal.
  • 3 0
I rode Fox’s live valve for a bit on an XC bike and my impression was that it would be way better on a long travel rig. Missed opportunity for them, smart move for RS IMO (though I’m sure they’ll have an XC version too). XC bikes are already super efficient so it felt less necessary.

Getting my Firebird to pedal like a XC bike, now that’s something I’m interested in!!
  • 9 1
Yeah it's an interesting decision. While XC folks are more into tech like this, they'd balk at the weight and I agree with RockShox that the tech makes the biggest difference on bigger bikes. More suspension shows the benefit more clearly.
  • 3 0
@brianpark: yep, it’s too heavy. And probably wouldn’t even work that well because the spectrum of suspension performance is so much narrower than on a longer travel bike.
  • 1 0
@bruvar: We all had cables that worked perfectly well for gears and droppers too but it hasn’t stopped SRAM AXS gaining popularity.
  • 1 0
@brianpark: yeah I can’t argue with the weight issue or bigger bikes being more tuneable. But wireless lockout on an XC bike would be huge. I’ve never really bothered with lockout on the enduro bikes. Never had an issue climbing with suspension open and it’s usually at a far more leisurely pace.
  • 2 0
I could see this being really useful for xc endurance racers
  • 1 0
@barry9559: The $2000 smart features of this do nothing for me on my XC bike, I would pay $300-400 dollars to get a manually controlled AXS lockout. 6 Cables in the front of the bike is a whole lot, 2 brake cables and the rest wireless would be so nice.
  • 26 0
With that many batteries, you may as well just throw a motor on it.
  • 10 0
For those prices, a motor should be standard!
  • 4 0
Yeah, 2 batteries for the drivetrain, 2 for the dropper post, 3 for the flight attendant. 7 batteries! I remember when the single di2 battery in my cx bikes seat post weirded me out.
  • 1 0
@Darwin66: Wait, your bikes get batteries? No fair.
  • 1 0
@WestC0astWanderer: Not my mtb, and only a single cross bike, at one point. ngl, the di2 shifting was sublime.
  • 23 1
Huck to flat video's for this field test are going to be interesting...........
  • 4 0
I agree. We need 60-120 FPS to see how the clever little fairies inside make it work.
  • 3 0
 @2-1RacingUK: lol... 60 FPS

the other H2F vids are 1000 FPS
  • 1 0
@lognar: I know but it would take 20 minutes to view it going through the process. Hahahaha.
  • 23 1
I can’t wait for this suspension on the specialized kenevo sl so we can finally buy a $20,000 bike.
  • 3 0
Here, the S-Works kenevo is already over $20,000 for the top end build.
My buddy that wrenches in a shop always tells me how many ebikes go out the door on a daily basis....

Some guy went in last week and bought TWO $16,000 ebikes... Who has that kind of cash!?!
  • 13 2
In Canada, you can buy a base Mitsubishi Mirage for the price of the Trek or the Specialized, ironically, you can also afford those cars on a flight attendant's salary; www.mitsubishi-motors.ca/en/vehicle/showroom/mirage/2022
  • 18 4
So you're saying that one of the most expensive mountain bikes on the market is the same price as the shittiest car you can buy?
  • 24 4
Did you know that for the price of a Bugatti Veyron you can buy a 3 bedroom teardown HOUSE in East Vancouver? Smile
  • 8 0
 @swenzowski: that’s exactly what he’s saying. And it’s a fair point.
  • 4 1
@brianpark: We're not quite there yet Brian. The Veyron, which was produced to 2015, was 1.9M USD, index that to inflation and you're well above tear-down. That's about 2.5M CAD.

You can get a nice Vancouver Special, in East Van, with a rental suite in the basement, for that kind of money.
  • 1 0
I work for a lady that is the grand daughter of a shopping business mogul from the early 1900's here in Melbourne... her house is on the market for $30-35 million.... and it's not even nice, it's old and big and in the most expensive suburb of Melbourne. I have no idea why anybody would pay that kind of money for an old house that basically needs to be gutted and completely renovated

You could buy three $10m houses in better locations across Melbourne and still have 5 in the sky rocket.
  • 1 0
@BiNARYBiKE: bIcYCleS r 2 eXpENsiVe I cAn bUY a DiRt bIKe FOr LeSs
  • 1 0
@swenzowski: look I just bought a new Transition Spire, so I’m on board as much as anyone else. But don’t pretend like the cost of bikes isn’t kinda nuts.
  • 1 0
@Waldon83: in case no one noticed there are plenty, err..lots, err... the world is crawling with wealthy people who inherited from their ancestors who really did the work/came up with the idea, etc. They spend 32,000 dollars on toys for part time entertainment.
  • 1 0
@BiNARYBiKE: Prices of solid mid-tier bikes that absolutely shred are actually pretty good, considering how reliable and how good the performance is, compared with what you could get 10 years ago.

For example, I don't know anyone that got 12spd XTR when it was released, but it eventually trickled down to Deore 12 spd which is super reliable and works great.

If you only watched Top Gear, you'd be saying how expensive all the fun cars are. Yeah the top of the line stuff is cool, but unless you're wealthy, or you get it heavily discounted by being sponsored it's not really what people are buying.
  • 1 0
@swenzowski: it's still just a very nice bicycle with slightly better parts than a midrange bicycle versus a brand new car with airbags, power steering, ABS, air-conditioning, etc. It's not weird to be amazed at the price difference. I dare you to disassemble and reassemble that 'shitty' car, then do the same for the bike and then still think that the bike should be more expensive. I know, economies of scale, bladiebla, but it's still ridiculous.
  • 1 0
@brianpark: that Veyron has a lot more extremely advanced R&D and engineering into it that fully explains the price difference to a piece of land and some wooden planks. Bugatti/Volkswagen also lose money on every Veyron, so it costs even more to develop and build. The same cannot be said about a Trek or Specialized bicycle. They are very nice bicycles, but there is no extremely advanced R&D or manufacturing involved. Despite the prices, there is nothing truly revolutionary in Fox Factory suspension compared to Performance Elite. There is nothing truly revolutionary in SRAM XX compared to GX. The same goes for the frame (which is of course better quality than normal carbon, but nowhere near aerospace or F1 levels) and the electric engine (it's very good stuff, but nothing really special). The materials and engineering in a Veyron are aerospace/F1 level.
I understand that top-end things are always going to be disproportionately expensive, but it's still a bicycle. And when that bicycle is as expensive as a 200 HP track ready motorcycle, it's getting ridiculous.

Buy it in Alberta...$16800CAD after tax. A bargain!
  • 1 0
@juicebanger: that's the only place people will be able to afford one!
  • 9 0
Pay more to make your bike uglier and less reliable. But you'll talk about it more.
  • 8 0
 That’s Ebike syndrome
  • 8 0
Is it just me, or does that yt with all the new tech and axs on it, for £7.7k actually look like good value compared to everything else?
  • 2 0
Yo! Foreal! 3k less than the TREK, for the same bits! I'm in!
  • 6 0
@racecase: agreed. Cheaper to buy the YT, sell the frame and then buy a frame set that you’d get customer service with as standard.
  • 10 1
Already having anxiety about not charging any one of four fucking components. This is so stupid.
  • 5 0
I'm a tech dork but range anxiety is a thing for sure.
  • 7 0
trek: $12,499.99 save a cent and buy the trek.

There must be some folks that actually buy these...Capra only available im size M, so not for me anyway.

Five figure bikes... if only personal income's were increasing as fast as #inflation .
  • 1 0
Personal incomes/ wages havent kept up with inflation in decades, at least in the USA.
  • 2 0
Fun prices... I guess the dentists are never satisfied until every individual spoke has its own mobile app......... so where are we all going to go after Outside pulls all the traffic they can from PB, anyway?
  • 1 0
As intriguing as this technology is, its fundamentally flawed.
Anyone who as ridden a CCDB with climb switch, appreciates that closing off low speed compression and rebound is complete gold compared to just the compression which leaves you with a solid pogo stick compared.
I would guess that RS cant do compression and rebound due to patents (no idea, just a guess).
For most riding, I would rather have the CS than flight attendant.
(memo to me, get a CS upgrade or shop for one as my current CCDB doesnt have it and I really miss it).
  • 3 0
which company is gonna be the first one to come out with a 20k$ plus, mass produced mtb?
  • 1 0
Getting close, Specialized has the Turbo Levo SL at 19,399: www.specialized.com/ca/en/s-works-turbo-levo-sl/p/175105?color=293231-175105

Everyone complaining about Outside and just completely skipped over the fact these bikes are now $12,500! More expensive than a brand new KTM or Husqvarna. My friend just paid $13K for a brand new MV F3 800CC!
  • 1 0
"...and all of them have models that are either available now or will be in the near future specced with this new electronic tech."

Coming to a bike near you, Winter 2022.
