Schwinn/GT Execs net Huge Bonuses Schwinn/GT Execs net Huge Bonuses
I found this story on the
Bicycle Retailer
site. It has to be frustrating (to say the
least) for Schwinn/GT team members who were said to be collectively
stiffed $200,000US. How is it that executives who run companies
into the ground are able to get bonuses? Schwinn/GT's $2 million
retention plan was made public last week despite Questor's efforts
to keep details of the plan confidential. The top 10 managers
received about 40 percent of the $2 million bonus
package with
the remainder distributed among 51 other employees. Executive bonuses
were calculated as a percent of their annual salaries.

BOW VALLEY MOUNTAIN BIKE ALLIANCE

REQUEST TO MEMBERSHIP

The Bow Corridor Ecosystem Advisory Group (BCEAG) has formed a Recreational Opportunities Working Group Committee (ROWG) that wants to solicit public involvement in setting direction for human/wildlife use of the corridors around Canmore. Ken Davies of the Bow Valley Mountain Bike Alliance (BVMBA) is the mountain bike representative on the committee. Although the BVMBA has disagreed with many of the BCEAG processes to date, the BVMBA endorses the ROWG process because it allows mountain bikers and other recreational users to communicate directly with BCEAG and, hopefully, participate in the decision making process. We hope this is the first of many public consultations!

Well here is your chance to put add your input and in so create the new Pinkbike, because really, it is YOU that make this site. So, get your idea caps on and lets discuss what we all should change.
What do you like? What you hate? What you want changed, why? What do you want added/axed? Here are a couple of early graphics Scott Kells put together for Pinkbike and Biglines.

eBay and IMBA Lend a Hand eBay and IMBA Lend a Hand
More than a thousand volunteer trailworkers will receive free heavy-duty
work gloves thanks to a new alliance between eBay and the International
Mountain Bicycling Association.

eBay, the world's online marketplace, has joined IMBA as a corporate member
and paid for a shipment of custom work gloves to help support and reward
volunteer trailworkers. The leather gloves feature both the eBay and IMBA
logos and are being distributed to IMBA-affiliated mountain bike clubs
coast-to-coast and beyond.

Mountain bike clubs can request the free work gloves by completing a simple
form on IMBA's website at: http://www.imba.com/resources/grants/index.html

"IMBA is very grateful for eBay's support," says IMBA executive director Tim
Blumenthal. "Good gloves are essential to produce great trailwork."

Mountain Bike City - New Owners Mountain Bike City - New Owners
I would like to invite eveyone to come in and see us and our soon to be renovated shop. We want Mountain Bike City to be the place in calgary to buy cool bikes, what other shop do the owners actually ride? We are going to be starting a freeride/downhill team with weeknight shuttles etc. we will be ressurecting a certain orange and black racing team that has gone into hibernation for the last two years. I have been in discussion with Wintergreen as they are planning to open again next year any one that wants to be a part of the action should talk to us. We have got all the info on the new Intense frames and the progressive shocks, they have come down in price this year and we will be bringing some in along with all the big konas, norcos and the top secret cannondale gemini. Also a lot of people dont realize that we are a full service ski and board shop. We sell atomic, volkl and rossi and have one of the most experienced techs in town. We are going to have a booth at the ski show november 2nd and 3rd, come see our winter lines as well as the new bikes (the good ones)- jonn teghtmeyer and tyler downes

Thunk Bicycles Thunk Bicycles
Just found this hand made Canadian frameset from newcomer Thunk Bicycles based right here in Calgary. Constructed of straight guage 4130 cromoly, with more gussets than you could count on one hand, this frameset is beefy beyond words. Targeting the freeride/DH/urban hardtail market, frame weight on the prototype is a burly 7 lbs and retail pricing is expected to be between $900 and $1000 Canadian. The bike accepts 24 and 26" rear wheels (cantilever posts) and up to 3.0 tires with plenty of room. According to all who had the chance to ride it, numbers on this (as yet) unnamed prototype were bang on and Derek from Thunk advised me of some planned changes to production frames. Chainstays will become rectangular 4130 to and the gussets found at the BB and seat tube/seatstay junctions will disappear as in-house testing found them to be overkill. Also from Thunk is the megla-beefy brick stem and bash guard. These were just one-offs for the proto bike, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them on a Thunk near you! Production frames will be available in late January. Contact Derek at (403)277-3430 or at thunkbicycles@hotmail.com for more info.See Photos

Well, I hope it's better late then never so here are the Race Results. Seems like everytime I sit down to get these out something comes up. Let me start by thanking the Kicking Horse crew for putting on what was the best race of the season. In classic Golden style, the course kicked some serious butt! Shoot, even the ride to the start was a blast. Add to that the awesome feast afterwards and you have one great event! I will definitely race there again! Fish, Bateman and KHMR put on one hell of a race and hope to be part of the BC Cup next year. I wish them all the luck! Former NORBA contender and all around honch, “Tattoo” Lou was there with his Ten Ten Products XC and Dual frames. Both bikes looked sweet with the Dual/Urban ride built from 4130 cromo and sporting horizontal dropouts. Lou also had some megla beefy stems to show and sent me on my way with a pair of his cnc’d end caps! Chumba Wumba showed us their Shaums March limited edition Zulu DH. Featuring an upgraded Romic Shock, custom paint, additional machining and details I’m surely missing. Numbers are limited to just 50, so be sure to order yours soon. Royal Racing was keeping some big news under their hat for the 2002 season, but did find the time to show us their gorgeous bolt on chainring. Hurricane also showed up with an updated SS seatpost that has been lengthened for the burly freerider! These posts are made with what has to be the largest clamp on the market, virtually eliminating bent seat rails!

Dual is Dead Dual is Dead
The UCI has confirmed that the two-up race format will be replaced next season with biker-X style four-up racing. The UCI hopes this effort will make the format more spectator friendly. Now if track designers can adjust and make the courses wider and leave room to pass, this can only be good for the sport. It should open up room to qualify more than the current 30 racers. This may open up the field to more local racers unable to put in qualifying times equal to World Cup Pros, but fast in the four-up format nonetheless. I can't wait for next season. I'm sure local promoters will revel in the chance to open up this racing format!

Videos Offline and tech talk Videos Offline and tech talk
Hi just wanted to let you guys know that I took the videos offline for a bit. Traffic to Pinkbike has boomed over the last little while and things are getting a little out of hand. We've had days recently where we have hit almost a million hits in ONE day! Server outgoing is railed at about 5 Mbits/sec constant average with 5 minute average spikes of 20 Mbits/sec and instantaneous spikes well into the 100Mbit pipe that we have. Also daily traffic is hitting 50Gigabytes per day! That's putting Pinkbike over a Terabyte/month traffic wise.
In any case, read my comments below and I invite you for some brainstorming into various solution.

Thoughts On Interbike Thoughts On Interbike
Interbike seemed to bring out all that is good and bad in the bike industry. There were companies like Ten Ten Products, Chumba Wumba, Razorrock, Royal Racing, Kona, Evil, Brooklyn, Canfield, Nicolai, Willits, Soul Craft, Avalanche, Cove, Dirt Rag, Bike, and a myriad of others I don't have room to name, in this for love of the sport. They jammed into the Sands Convention Center with companies like Pacific (who stiffed racers Leigh Donovan, Steve Peat, and Alison Dunlap out of an estimated $125,000) and the plethora of cross-marketers trying to capitalize on the cycling industry. It was good to see the number of suits were hugely outnumbered by the souls of the sport. The unfortunate part is the suits' sales probably exceed the souls' exponentially! I’ll just keep telling myself it's all about the love!

Greg Minnaar Injured Greg Minnaar Injured
World Cup Champion Greg Minnaar crashed during training yesterday and suffered a dislocated shoulder that put him out of the racing for the weekend. "I was having a great training run, chose the right combination of Michelins, when I just hit a rock awkwardly that through me into a tree. My shoulder was numb, and
I could feel it was not in the right place so I tried to move it myself.
Then these medics were standing on my chest and pulling on my arm like it
was Christmas!! A doctor then arrived, gave me an injection and slid the
shoulder back in," said Greg after returning from hospital. "This course is
the most technical I have ever seen. It's so steep and so difficult, and I
felt it was better not to risk dislocating the shoulder again. For further information on Greg visit www.gregminaarracing.com.

Big news at Troy Lee is the introduction of a fiberglass D2 helmet. Priced nearly $100US less than the D2 carbon, this helmet features the same attention to detail of it's pricier sibling like clear coated graphics, interchangeable MX style padded liner, and D-ring strap system in a (more) affordable platform. It is also available in a limited edition Hot Wheels version for those yearning for their younger years. They also showed us the new Sprint pant, a mountainbike/BMX specific pant that is similar to TLD's MX wear, but has been lightened, better ventilation, and padded knee and shin guards that all should improve pedalling efficiency for the DH crowd! Intorduced this season, the AIR glove I tried seemed to provide a good balance of comfort and protection in a well ventilated package.

Fox Racing Shocks Fox Racing Shocks
I have to admit, I was a little disappointed when I visited the Fox (suspension) booth at Interbike. Their Fox Vanilla and Float front forks were very impressive with the Vanilla especially nice for the trailbike crowd coming in a 125mm travel version. These forks were very stiff (on display anyway) and super plush but Fox folks were very tight lipped about future DH versions of the fork. The part I found very disappointing, was Fox has no plans to update the Vanilla RC rear shock. With companies like Avalanche , Progressive Suspension, and Curnutt upping the ante with among other things, position sensitive valving, custom tuning and unbelievable durability, I was shocked to hear a former industry leader like Fox was letting the opportunity pass.

Intense at Interbike Intense at Interbike
At the Intense booth, the only notable change to their already impressive line up is the addition of the Progressive Suspension 5th Element rear shock. This shock will be available on the M1 and plans are in the works for Uzzi and maybe even Tazer availability. No word on when or even if the Intense version of the VPP will be available. Intense did have their very impressive Off Road Truck on display at the Beach video party, but alas, we were too intent on partying to bring the camera. Intense will have the track tested 909 tires available for next season in both 2.5 and 2.7 SR versions. I was very impressed with these tires when I played with them at the Grouse World Cup. They have also released the Edge 2.35 (Blur replacement) and Zero 2.4 Semi-Slick DH tire. Razorrock Racing Razorrock Racing
New at Razorrock racing this year is a floating brake for the Super 8 and Shockwave. Adding to the Razorrock hot rod kits that replace the dropouts and use R³'s 20mm hub, Rob has made a brake mount with a floating arm that attaches to the front triangle. Production copies should be available around Christmas and I was unable to get a price list just yet. They have also updated their rear bolt on hub with steel inserts on the aluminum axle as well as a larger flange that should keep those with extra beefy dropouts from stripping the axle bolts! Word has it that Brake Therapy has also developed a Super 8 floating brake and I'll get pics and details for you tomorrow!

Stiga Madness sled by K2 @ Interbike Stiga Madness sled by K2 @ Interbike
The winter is coming and if you are still yearning of grasping a handle bar when you're on the slopes, then K2 has got you covered. Yes they call this the K2 Snowcycle but it can be easily converted into something that the Finns have already been doing for a while....a Stiga sled.Check out this Stiga story from the Pinkbike past. Last I've seen, Vise has been pulling full out, back flips on these babies.

Interbike Poll renamed Interbike Poll renamed
Thanks to Nicole from New Zealand for pointing out that our "Hottest Babes at Interbike Poll" was sexist. Also mentioned were some choice swear words as well as an explanation that we should "get with it" and put up some hot males from Interbike. OK then. The poll is changed to Hottest PEOPLE at Interbike and our first candidates are Mike Porter and Gary Fisher. Happy Voting, and thanks Nicole.

Evil Bikes Evil Bikes
Straight from the depths of Boston, MA., Evil Bikes has created the Imperial hardtail frame. Evil showcased one of the stiffest, most durable looking frames that we have seen at Interbike. The Imperial has a beefy headtube junction, horizontal dropouts and is fat tire compatible (can easily handle a 2.8 Michelin on a 26' wheel). This is one stiff, unforgiving frame which will take every bit of abuse you can throw at it! The boys at Evil stand by the durability of their products, they even supplied a hammer for anyone willing to pound on their Security bash guard. Evil is producing products worthy of any hardcore rider who is most concerned with bombproof durability!

Balfa Cycles Balfa Cycles
Balfa has continued their species evolution and an updated BB7 should be shipping in mid-December. Through use of an increased stroke shock, travel is extended to between 8 and 8.5". The linkage plates have been beefed up, the head tube angle slackened and the Balfa signature upper pulley has increased in size for longer life. The Belair, an XC/trailbike with an integrated rear shock (a la Boulder bikes)and linkage is being offered for next year and showed the usual Balfa innovation. The popular 2-Step and Minuteman remain unchanged, but Balfa will have complete bikes available for those afraid to self spec!

Price for the frame only is anticipated to be around $1200US. They also showed us an MRP'esq chainguide in addition to a BMX guide, wheelsets, carbon bar and magnesium pedals. For the budget minded, Azonic has also moved their lower end line to the World Force brandname and will be pushing Blur eyewear.

Foes Does Freeride Foes Does Freeride
For the 2002 model year, Foes has eliminated the LTS and Weasel models and replaced them with the impressive looking Fly! Depending on shock choice and position, travel of the Fly is adjustable from 6.25 to 8.0". Brent was thoughtful enough to put the floating rear brake on the Fly, and a Curnutt shock is offered on the derailleur compatible frameset. Changes to the DHS Tube have simplified the frameset to lower price and weight and also increase stiffness. The Fox rear shock is now lengthened and adjustable á la Mono and the Curnutt is an option. The Foes F1XL and F1/Curnutt XTD are updated, extended travel (8") versions of Foes' race proven Wet One and still weigh under 6.5 pounds! The Mono has also seen small changes to the frameset and you can now purchase the bike as a frame (stage 1), frame/fork (stage 2), or as a complete bike (stage 3). In XC and trailbike news, Foes has obviously embraced the Curnutt technology, with an XC version of the rear shock on the race proven FXC, and on the unnamed prototype trailbike.

Santa Cruz Bikes Santa Cruz Bikes
Santa Cruz also had an impressive booth with a whole ton of innovation and detail work rarely found in a company of their size, especially considering the sales success of their current line! Obviously, the biggest news is the much talked about V10. Utilizing the VPP technology, this bike should be available by mid-February and 2 frameset levels will be offered at $1799 and $2199 US retail! Rob promises a copy for testing within the next 6 weeks! All of the Santa Cruz suspension line will either use or offer the 5th Element Progressive rear shocks. I also had the chance to ride a Bullit on Saturday with the 5th Element and it was a huge improvement over the Fox RC. Speaking of the Bullit, pivot has been moved about 1/2 inch lower to improve pedalling for the freeride crowd reluctant to run a big ring up front, and the frame will now accept an 8" rotor! The XC Blur (VPP) should also come out early next summer. The coolest features on the 2002 line is the addition of replaceable dropouts. Not derailleur hangers, dropouts. These things are beautiful, and certainly are a value added feature, as is the bottle opener on the re-released Heckler line! Nice to see Santa Cruz pushing the envelope in their line!

Avalanche Booth! Avalanche Booth!
Packed with the most eye candy per capita, the Avalanche booth has the most impressive lineup of bikes at the show. Bikes like the Brooklyn TMX, TMX linkage, and mini-link. The Canfield boys, Lance and Chris had their Canfield Fatty Fat 10" travel monster and Nicolai also had a very impressive pair of bikes I can't wait to get my hands on for a dirt test. All bikes were equipped with the new Avalanche DHF-8 forks and looked indestructable. These small builders are absolute craftsmen with awesome attention to detail! The bad news is that attention doesn't come cheap!

Rocky Mountain Bicycles 2002 Lineup Rocky Mountain Bicycles 2002 Lineup
Rocky Mountain Bikes had a sweet looking full suspension lineup. The Switch, a 4-5 inch travel trailbike with an awesome spec. I had the opportunity to ride this one at the on dirt demo and walked away very impressed. The RM9 has been updated with beefed up downtube and headtube, Hopey damper (the only OEM manufacturer to spec it)with ful 14mm headset cups to eliminate head tube ovalization, and the addition of 4 cartridge bearings in the main pivot! The sweet flame paint was popular as well. Pete also showed us the unnamed "X-Bike". A full suspension XC bike, it uses Easton's new XC RAD tubing and utilizes Formula 1 inspired double wishbone rear suspension. Looked sweet and weighed less than 24 pounds with sensible spec.
