Life in Bend, Oregon

Jan 3, 2015
by Dennis Yuroshek
Bend, Oregon, located in the upper left portion of the United States, sits at 3600' above the sea. The weather patterns here are not your normal rainy PNW conditions - Bend is considered high desert and is very dry during the summer months. With 300 days of sunshine you typically don't have to look at the weather channel, you just know its going to be perfect outside. Known for its beer, with 14 breweries in town there is 1 brewery for every 4500 people who live here. When you are not out drinking beer, floating on the Deschutes river, listening to music or doing something rad you can always go mountain biking. With hundreds of trails within a few miles of town you can literally go on an epic ride right our your front door. There are trails for everyone, from paved river trails to Mt. Bachelor's new lift accessed options, to some deep backcountry where you may not see anyone for hours. Within this little mountain town there are some seriously talented people that CHOOSE to live here.

Carson Storch, this dude has progressed so much in the little time I have known him. It's a blast going out for a ride or shooting photos of him flip whipping in his front yard. Good kid to be around too.

I just moved to Bend for school and its the best decision I've ever made. The atmosphere and community here is just unreal. I can't even describe it. This article is fantastic! It nails how if feels to live here! I moved here with the goal of making the Oregon State University Cascades Mountain Bike Team a successful and inpactful part of this amazing outdoor community, its going to be hard, but all I want is to give back to this incredible sport, and Bend is the perfect place. I have no words to describe this place, we got it good though, this is home and I couldn't be more greatful. Sorry for the sappy story, but I'm just real passionate about my lifestyle of mountain bike.

No apologies needed, dude. Except for maybe the BC people, most here read with envy.

I took a tip there and rode bachelor and the lower woops and now I'm in love with bend. The trails are just so much fun. Anyone looking for some where to go ride some quality trails take a trip to bend.
  • 3 0
So.... You guys give out scholarships?
  • 2 0
Haha I wish, not for the MTB team, it is barely a team right now, but I am aiming to fix that! But the school does pay for all racing associated fees like entry fees and traveling costs.

When you become a famous enduro rider Im gunna pull the fact up that I partially planted the Bend seed in your head while you were wrenching at life cycle all summer

That awesome moment when you decide to check pink bike at midnight and there is a article about your hometown.... Ya bend is pretty cool

Do you fancy bend over; mount bachelor?
  • 2 0
As long as I can ride the Three Sisters...they are a bit distant, though.

What this article missed was mentioning COTA. Central Oregon Trail Alliance. These guys and gals are putting down close to 10 miles of trail annually. That's a big deal. Riding in Bend would suck with out their hard earned work. Hopefully all the locals mentioned are already members. Gotta give some love back to the trails we rail.

Hey small FYI legal marijuana in oregon.... Check!!! it got voted through in November....
  • 2 1
Thats right buddy I forgot. Get some. haha Smile Congrats to you guy's also. I've been to Bend. Freaking rad place.
  • 1 0
Well it's voted legal but like Washington it's gonna be a delay till it's actually legal so be careful up til July of this year...then it's all fair game!
  • 2 1
Being legal hasn't changed how I buy it. The state wants 25 bucks a gram which is robbery. They are going down to 15 a gram. I can pay 10/gram on the street. The state isn't doing themselves any favors not competing with street prices. That being said what changes for me is I do not worry about carrying it anymore.
  • 1 0
Yeah that's retarded. When I recently went to Colorado the place I went I got it for 13/gram but I'll say it was some good shit. But unless they figure out to sell it for the same as the street the legalization is gonna fail.
  • 6 0
if they didnt tax the shit out of it to make the government some (sorry, i mean a shit ton of) money, it would be pretty hard to get legalization laws passed. prices for legal weed will come down in time, its a plant, it doesnt cost much to produce. the important thing is that these laws get passed and people start to realize pot is no big deal, which is already happening. i can pay about exactly half on the black market what i would pay buying legally for the same strain, though to be honest i feel guilty buying black market. some percent of every dollar spent on legal weed (at least here in colorado) is used on education, in addition it shows the government that not only do people want to smoke weed (and that they are doing it without any negative social consequences) but that there is a ton of money to be made, too much to ignore, in addition to all the money saved by not arresting and prosecuting good people for non-violent victimless crimes. bottom line, any support behind legalization is a good thing, even if it means having to pay a bit more for a little while to get your smoke on, good things are happening, and its pretty dope Wink

Bend also has a thriving BMX racing scene. I wish I could get my wife to move there. MTB, BMX, & Snowboarding. It would be perfect. At least we live in Portland. So it's not to hard to get over there.

Bend is fantastic (visited there 3 years ago). Great trails and fantastic breweries. I challenge all of you to make it through the walking brewery tour that consists of seeing all of the breweries in 1 day...I think we made it to 4 or 5 before needing to be escorted back to our cabin in wheelbarrows. Fun times.
  • 1 0
That would be simple for me, as I don't drink, but I should would love to join you for the entertainment. The entertainment is the sole reason I go out with my younger brother and his buddies to the bars.
  • 4 0
I've ridden in Bend and in general Oregon many times and have found it to be the perfect four inch 29r riding. Not technical but still fun though. Love the breweries and the town.
But I still find myself saying that Tahoe has the best riding on the west coast(USA only). The only problem with Tahoe is that you need a lot of local knowledge to navigate it all. But there is still enough on the maps for a good week long ripping session between North and South Lake Tahoe. Having a Six inch travel bike will for the most part cover all your bases.
I am by no means bagging on Bend because I still go up there for road trips.
  • 3 0
Yeah, I agree about the 4" 29r part. Most of the trails are very very tame. 6" bikes are too much bike for nearly all of them. Also to be honest, Bachelor is nowhere near steep or rough enough to justify any kind of dh bike. For the most part I prefer the steeper and more kinky trails on the west side of the mountains. That being said Bend is still a fun place to ride a few times a year!
  • 2 0
So true I grew up in the tahoe area and have ridden a lot of rad stuff in Oregon but nothing beats home.
  • 1 0
@tannerd: @wsor1337 @alwayslivingthedream. Sorry to bother y'all 7 years later but my wife and I are thinking about moving to Bend in the next year but was worried the riding was a bit too XC oriented. Do y'all feel like more technical//enduro (I hate the label) trails have been put in around Bend?
  • 1 0
@gilbert253: mount bachelor is waaay better than it used to be. There's a legit jump line and a couple pretty fun tech trails now. Most of the riding outside of that is pretty much the same, but it's definitely a good place to live if you ride mountain bikes. It's no Bellingham but it's good.
  • 3 0
Used to live in Ptown and Bend was my favorite place to visit. Bachelor is a great local mountain to board on. I only race XC back then but the trails were fast and flowy. It looks like they've done some work to add some more technical stuff. Such a great town.
  • 3 0
I had no idea that Bend was such an awesome place for riding! I grew up on the So.Or.Coast riding The 30 (30 Punks!) and thought that Bend was just a good place for winter sports. I moved to Spokane, WA in 2011, and discovered that the riding scene here is decent, with lots of stuff from XC to DH, all in the backyard. There's good stuff within a short drive, too, but I haven't explored much of it yet. The wife has been talking about moving again, closer to our old stomping grounds to be closer to family. After seeing this post, I am going to push REALLY hard for Bend. Thanks!
  • 6 0
They forgot to mention Cam McCaul... He just moved here, no biggyWink

I'm looking to do a 30 day trip from Utah through Oregon, Washington and British Columbia next July. What are some must do trails in Oregon? I've already got Sandy Ridge, and Bend planned, but I'm looking for some ideas for other areas.
  • 5 0
 Oakridge.
  • 5 0
Black rock, post canyon, ski bowl, dog river, Ashland, lime quarry trails in joseph, Oregon, MERA in Lagrande. I think your gonna need more than 30 days lol so many good places to ride in Oregon!
  • 1 0
Thanks! Fortunately I'll do another trip up there in a fall.
  • 1 0
maybe add Marys Peak (near Blackrock). Short ride, but good stuff. Lots to do for shure.
  • 9 0
I was pretty underwhelmed by the trails in Bend to be honest. After hearing what a mountain bike mecca the place was, I figured there would be some gnar etc. Black rock was off the hook though. Also the breweries were in bend were awesome. Crux was our favorite
  • 1 0
ashland isnt that great in the summer.
  • 1 0
Whoop-Dee outside of hood River is a must!
  • 2 0
I'll second Marys Peak. You can shuttle East Ridge Trail, but the true gem is North Ridge. One of my favorite trails of all time. It got dumbed down a little in the last few years by a misguided retired guy, but it does flow a little better now and was rehabbed by the local mtb club during a couple of official work days. It kicks ass. 15 minutes of screaming down through incredible old growth forest.
  • 1 0
I hate you, I mean take me with you?
  • 3 0
If you are a predominately gravity rider, you may not like Bend as much as you would think. Almost no gnar to be had there. Head for Black Rock for sure though!

Sample vid here:

  • 1 0
Depends on what you are after, but I'll echo what others have said here: Bend has some enjoyable riding, but isn't too gnar. Hunt down Funner for a good ride. I'll second Sandy Ridge, Black Rock, Oakridge (Alpine trail near Oakridge for the views), and a stop in Ashland. Burning a month riding in the Oregon area is going to be the best of times!
  • 2 0
Don't forget the new Alsea Falls Trail System, which isn't far from Mary's Peak that has been mentioned. We should have additional trails open by then too, and if timed right, a shuttle day FUNdraiser as well! Alsea Falls has some amazing flow trails that are in a beautiful forest in Oregon. Don't miss these trails! www.teamdirt.org
  • 2 0
Hit Oakridge and talk to the guys at Willamette Mountain Mercantile. Try calling Oregong Adventures to set up an Alpine Shuttle and do the lollipop. If you don't hear back from them, hit the Brewers Union Local 180 and find Randy putting a few away. If you're up for it followup Alpine with three for the money or boldly head over to Crawfish drainage where things get a lot more techy. Good people in Oakridge. Can't say enough good things about Bill and Sue in Ashland as well. If you're in Bend, have Kirt show you around. Hit Whoop-Dee and Post Canyon in the Gorge and you're golden.
  • 2 0
Dude. Deschutes River Trail. It's not technical, but the most beautiful trail I've ever ridden.
  • 2 0
They have done a fantastic job with the bikepark!..rode there twice this year..ride Bachelor morning-early afternoon, then on your way back to town hit "whoops" a couple a times, then explore Phil's trails and finish in town at a few breweries-10 barrel, Crux, etc.=PERFECT day..Bend in Da Bomb:-)
  • 6 0
The only thing that would make Bend better is some actual DH
  • 3 0
bend was great we go every year as is hood river on the way down, being from BC it's hard to say anywhere is better than the next BUT bend rocks it for being bike friendly and great beers.
  • 5 0
 What about Goldman??? cmon guys!
  • 1 1
I know I know! Goldman is a legend also, I only got to ride with that fool once this year unfortunately. #healupGoldman!

Bend is okay. Hood River is better. Better trails, beer, shops and better winter backcountry...and WAY cheaper cause Californians are too lazy to drive 4 more hours.
  • 1 0
 nailed it.
  • 1 0
Says the 2 guys who live in California. Hood River is rad but I wouldn't want to live there.
  • 1 0
Just moved to Sisters to be close to all the bend biking. Pretty disappointed to find out all the good AM trails get shut down during the winter. It's a good thing for the trails, I get that. Just wish there was more than xc loops to do during the winter. I just want to ride bikes down a hill fast lol.
  • 1 0
Moved to Bend after living in Tahoe and Ashland. Was a massive downgrade in the riding and the skiing. Tried as hard as could to like it but after riding the massive high speed vert and flow of Ashland and the steeps and rocks of Tahoe Bend was really boring. Pretty much everywhere in Oregon is better. Hood, Black Rock, Alsea, Oakridge, Ashland...... Do some homework before you move here unless you like XC or riding trails that are slightly more fun than listening to AM radio while you watch a nice off white paint dry.
  • 5 1
Home prices just went up in Bend!
  • 1 0
 Again!
  • 9 9
Not necessarily. This may show that the riding is awesome, but the feature didn't do anything to convince me of the strength of job market, cost of living, quality of schools, or anything else that makes "living" someplace possible. As much as I'd love to be a homeless bike bum trashing up your streets, I'd rather be a contributing member of your community.
  • 10 4
Negative props for being an adult.
  • 1 0
still like 1/10th the prices of houses in California... I see why there are so many California transplants there.
  • 2 0
Honestly, the job market is not great. A large but saturated service industry. A growing web design area though....hmm and not much else haha.
  • 2 0
 kjellterskelter,

Thanks for the honest opinion. Too often Pinkbike "kids" and unattached bike bums will talk up a place likes its paradise, but that is only because they live in an apartment with 5 other dudes and all work in bartending, or they have a partner who pays are their bills. Not that there is anything wrong with that, as I probably should have done that when I was younger, but as I got older I've learned that I want a paradise for outdoor activities as well as for "normal" life stuff, like a job, commute, a house, that kind of stuff. My wife and I are both pretty frugal, but it would be difficult working for 11/hr and paying $1500 for rent.
  • 2 0
I'm in Portland. Have not found many trails here (thought it would be easier to find them socal. Go figure) I'm gonna vacation in bend this summer.
  • 2 0
That's because there ARE none here.
  • 2 0
I have been to Bend and it is (in my opinion) the coolest place on Earth, the trails are amazing and it is awesome just being there. Oregon is an amazing place!
  • 4 0
Is someone who comes from Bend known as a 'Bender'?
  • 1 0
I'm going to be spending a few day in Bend in August. I prefer DH over pedaling all day every day, but will probably only have my trail bike with me (SB66). Any recommendations for what I should I hit up?
  • 2 2
Check out Tiddlywinks, Funner, and Tyler's Traverse... You won't regret it. You could also check out upper/lower whoops which is a lot of fun to ride too. There are a couple shops that shuttle riders up to the trails from town and make sure to pick up a trail map. They are excellent and will come in handy. If you still have time you could run a half day up at Mt. Bachelor and benefit from the ski lift so you'll have all the downhill flow you can squeeze in.

Have fun!
  • 1 0
Much appreciated man. Thanks! P.S. I neg propped you on accident. Sorry about that.
  • 1 0
Hit south fork and maybe even flag line depending on how fast the snow melts. Either way you're gonna pedal in bend but it's worth it
  • 1 0
How's the winter? Are all the trails covered in snow at that altitude or is there still some good riding to be had? I live just oustide Tacoma WA and have been thinking about a weekend trip.
  • 3 0
Saw a bumper sticker in Bend. "My life is better than your vacation!"
  • 3 0
We also have another one "Welcome to Bend, Don't F*** it up!" heh heh

Oregon is an awesome state , so beautiful. I used to go to the dunes in Florence every year for some dirt bike shredding. I would love to check out the mountain bike scene

There's no jobs in Oregon though. Stupid $$, ruining my epic riding. Anyone in oregon interested in hiring a bad ass, hard working electrician?

I don't live to far from Bend. I'm going to get up there and ride someday.
  • 2 0
Does Carl Decker still live there?
  • 3 1
I believe he does. There are also a few road and XC racing pros that live there too. Ryan Trebon (multi time CX national champion) Chris Horner (Oldest person to ever when the Vuelta) and Barry Wicks (all round XC badass). This article just focused on the more gravity riders. Cleary it's a rad place to live.
  • 2 0
Yeah, I found it odd that they left dudes like Decker, Wicknasty, Trebon and Old Man River/Yoda, AKA Chris Horner, out of this article.
  • 6 1
Sorry, I wasnt trying to write a book. There are a ton of super talent that are not in this article including, Goldman and McCaul (even tho he just moved here). I was highlighting life in Bend, not trying to brag about who lives here. But yes there are many many amazing people here. I myself CHOSE to live here.
  • 3 0
Yeah, what the hell? You didn't even mention that I live here! A random nobody that loves bend.

Pretty cool. Might be going to college in Salem, not too far away. Seems like an awesome area.
  • 2 0
The salem area has plenty to offer as far as mtb trails. Many opportunities to dig as volunteers are always needed for the ever expanding network of trails.
  • 2 0
Check out Blackrock and Shellberg Falls–top-notch riding very close to Salem.
  • 1 0
I've seen videos of Blackrock. Looks awesome. Is Shellberg FR/DH?
  • 1 0
Shellburg is an older freeride area that is not maintained as well as blackrock. Blackrock came later and draws most of the riders so Shellburg isn't used like it once was. If you do go to Shellburg my favorite trail is Bullet. Shellburg also has some xc trails. I ride Shellburg a couple times of year whereas I visit blackrock about once a month.

I also ride quite a bit out in Dallas which is more xc riding (no structures, etc). You can ride out there year round.

Some of the local trail organizations are building a new trail out in Silver Falls and involving the IMBA so I have a lot of hopes for this development.

The nice thing about living in Salem is that within a 2 hour driving radius there are several epic areas to ride.
  • 1 0
Yeah it sounds awesome. Thanks for the info!

Seriously ? Try the Alps ?
  • 4 0
Italy is not bad. Not bad at all. As a matter of fact. Italy is great. Cheap food, coffee and great trails. Alps on one side, Finale Ligure at the other, year round sunshine.

If you would have suggested the Netherlands, my home country, I couldn't agree more. But Italy is more than decent for MTB (understatement)
