Canyon Bicycles Now Available Direct in the USA - Crankworx Whistler 2017

Aug 17, 2017 at 14:10
by Richard Cunningham

Canyon announced that they are open for business in the USA. After ironing out some details that postponed their original plans, the German direct-to-customer bike brand has opened shop in Southern California, where they will service United States customers from offices in Carlsbad and their warehouse in Chino. The Canyon USA website officially went live Tuesday. Canyon will initially be offering a modest selection, including select road bikes and their three most popular mountain bikes: the cross-country Exceed, the AM/enduro Strive, and the Dude fat bike. The Spectral trail bike and Sender DH bike available later this Fall.

I rode Canyon's Strive all-mountain/enduro machine, which will be first up for USA sales.

To celebrate the announcement, Canyon invited its media friends to join them on a heli-drop trail ride in the mountains near Whistler. We were joined by Troy Brosnan and Mark Wallace to keep the pace slow and easy,

descending a route that began in the alpine above the treeline and tumbled down natural terrain, for an enjoyable hour of technical bliss. It was Brosnan's first helicopter ride, and from the smile on his face, It won't be his last.

What's in store for Canyon in North America? Canyon is following their German rival YT, who has successfully gained a toehold in the North American mountain bike economy - and that is a good sign. Sales in the US and Canada have been stable, so YT's inroad into the market is a strong indicator that up-scale mountain bike enthusiasts are embracing the direct-sales model. I'm only guessing here, but I'm sure that Canyon's plan to hold off until its customer service and distribution channels were locked and loaded before opening its doors for business will be its most potent advertising tool. If you're in the USA, visit Canyon's new landing page and have a look.

Contacted Canyon a few days ago and they confirmed that they are USA only for now. Is it really that hard to import into Canada? Maybe the Trump tower in Vancouver had them confused that Whistler wasn't in the USA. Make Whistler great again!

@cb7: Well Capt Orange hasn't killed NAFTA yet, so I'm thinking maybe they are not NAFTA partners? So it's likely shipping costs. I worked for a UK company and we shipped to Canada and any goods from the UK (not USA made) had duties based on msrp. I always put "$5 value" so you guys didn't have to pay, eh! For shipping insurance, which you want for a complete bike, you need the value. Sometimes those duties are a flat percent, paid by the shipper or receiver. I don't know what that percentage is, but 5% on a $4000 bike is $200. They would have to add that to the price to avoid hassle.

Now the Americans can experience the joy of 'sender' back.

Wish they would sort out their existing customers first. 3 carbon frames broke in 1 year ownership. Everytime it's at least month without bike till they sort it, customer service inspection delays then frame delays. Good luck cousins, your another 3000 miles from the factory
  • 1 0
 3k miles from which factory?
  • 6 0
 @bforwil: the germese
  • 5 0
Yeah almost everyone I know with a Canyon (no many I admit) has had a problem with their frames. I originally tried to buy a Strive but they kept moving the delivery back month by month without telling me so eventually I cancelled it and bought a Capra!
  • 30 0
Canyon seriously thought the fat bike would be more popular in America over the Sender? I think they're just trying to call us fat. And I'm offended. Pass the donuts please.
  • 15 0
Celebrating the launch in the gravity mountain biking capital of the world (gravity bikes not yet available), Whistler BC Canada (bikes not actually available in Canada)?
  • 3 0
Do you not think it is a coincidence that they were in Canada anyway for Crankworx? As were all their 'media friends'...

I mean Canyon must be a right bunch of tools to grab everyone they know in the media from their doorstep and not transport them to the US for a media announcement, mustn't they...!?!
  • 12 1
One look at the US website and its clear, they are hear to sell road bikes. Not mountain bikes.
  • 2 1
....and it looks like they're not going to be selling frames, only completes.
  • 3 0
...and only higher prices models, none of the cheaper aluminum models.

 In the article:

"Canyon will initially be offering a modest selection, including select road bikes and their three most popular mountain bikes: the cross-country Exceed, the AM/enduro Strive, and the Dude fat bike. The Spectral trail bike and Sender DH bike available later this Fall."
  • 7 1
@bvd453: yep! I'm long past the point in my mtb life where I will ever buy a complete again! No frame option from any company is an epic fail in my book!
  • 14 0
@bohns1: Canyon frames are so expensive compared to their lowest tier complete bike, it was actually cheaper to buy that and sell off the parts. At least in Europe.
  • 9 2
That's a fun heli bike trip ! Done it 12 years ago, got chased by a swarm of wasps ~ that added some additional pace to the fast flowy single track Smile

Great to see Canyon spreading its wings ! Awesome bikes
  • 6 1
It's nice to see they provide a torque wrench and shock pump for assembly.

"Tools needed for assembly and adjustment:
Torque Wrench with Hex inserts 3,4,5,6 and Torx T25 (included in box)
Air pump for tires (not included in box)
Suspension pump (included in box, Mountainbikes only)
open-end wrench, Phillips screwdriver (included in box, specific Urban bikes only)
Carbon assembly paste (included in box, carbon parts only) "
  • 2 0
The torque wrench is basic but does the job, the suspension pump is pretty high quality though!
  • 7 3
Would've garnered a bit more interest if they did a big splashy reveal in the actual country their selling bikes too!

I'm sometimes wonder whether these bike companies should just focus on riding and making bikes and leave the PR to someone who has a clue. Yes, Whistler is where everyone is right now but who gives a flying f**k? It seems like more of a snub than anything... as though the real estate is cheap enough in San Diego county, but the riding certainly isn't?

Put on large events in SoCal and throughout the southwest you dummies...
  • 1 0
Yea if your not bringing your bikes to Canada then leave.
  • 6 1
If they open a store in Canada let's hope it's better then the YT store ( in Squamish) cause its f*cking lame as f*ck ,
Never open , no one is there , looks really bad on YT

The commencial

Anyone else feel the whole direct to consumer went out the window when they jacked up the price?
  • 6 1
Not an impressive website, Customer Service hours 8AM-2PM Pacific time? WTF
  • 5 3
Thats pretty cool...handle your biz in the am. Smart for them to just have part time employees as ca is not very small biz friendly..keep employees on covered California...welcome to paradise!
  • 2 0
a tip for if you buy canyon - always call. emails are slow going. number can be had from there faebook msgr.

the Strive is a weapon. great on climbs and rocket fast on the way down.

the spec for the price (2-3k) is unreal, the equivalent from a trek, spec or kona etc would be like 4- 6 grand.
  • 2 0
Super disappointed. They should have specified which bikes would be available in August. I'm not waiting for a spectral until fall. It's gunna snow before I get to ride it. Should have just gotten a transition earlier in the year.
  • 1 0
Looks like they have a few options for the spectral already...
Only one AL version...it looks like cables are on the outside of the downtube even if the frame seems to be drilled to go internal....Does anyone know the reason for that ?
  • 4 0
I just really hope heli biking does not become a bigger thing... us skiers are already blowing enough extra carbon into the atmosphere doing ridiculous heli skiing!
  • 2 0
Beware of Canyon's crash replacement scheme. It is a stupidly expensive policy - well, at least in UK / Europe.

If you accidentally damage a part on your frame e.g. a rock strike on a chainstay. Canyon won't sell you just a replacement chainstay, or even a rear triangle. No, you have to buy a whole new frame at a so called discounted price. However, the discounted price increases depending on how old your bike is as follows:
If you crash on year 1 of ownership, a new crash replacement frame will set you back £1229 ($1575) then there is the cost / hassle associated with a complete bike strip & rebuild.
Year 2 it is £1719 ($2203)
Year 3 £1919 ($2460)

The real insult comes at year 3, as this isn't really a discount, not when you consider a frame, complete with shock (Monchar Debonair) and Reverb can be bought for £2649 ($3396). The shock and Reverb is worth cira £700. So the 3rd year crash replacement frame only isn't discounted at all.
  • 1 0
i can add a price for a damaged full-suspension-seatstay (aluminum) after 3 years of use: 800 Euros
  • 5 1
Still no location selection on Canyon.com for Canada.. Is it open for Canadians?
  • 7 4
No, we apologize for the confusion. Canyon Bicycles will only be selling direct in the United States at this time, but they are working on it.
  • 100 2
Amazing. Canyon celebrates direct to consumer sales in the US with a heli-drop in Canada. Genius.
  • 9 3

@theteaser: well we didnt get ted cruz whom was the only true Reagan conservative so we sure as hell made sure to get someone that would stabilize the lefts radical supreme court picks. Its just too bad the swamp still hasnt been drained. The establishment is dug in deeeeep..ie, john McCain, rince, McConnell, paul ryan.
Est republicans spending big money to go against constitutional conservatives in races all across country.
Meanwhile, the Democrats are trying to erase tge history if the racist democratic party by trying to say its republicans whom were the southern racist...and people fall for it bc they don't know history! Sad

@jrocksdh: I don't know if using Trumpisms while debunking the "Southern Strategy" is going to help your argument anywhere, nevermind on pinkbike.
  • 1 4
@Session603: no you are also a racist crack pot if you belive this shit
  • 1 1
 @freestyIAM: believe what exactly?
  • 1 4
 @Session603: Any of it.
1) That golly Ted Cruz would just have been the best, you know, while he worked to reverse civil rights gains for women, gays, and generally anybody that isn't a white Christian man.
2) But since he didn't make it through the primaries (which btw, isn't he foreign born so barred from serving as president, but oh i forgot, Republicans don't care about silly laws that disqualify a president, so long as a Rep is in the White house), "we sure as hell made sure to get someone that would stabilize the lefts radical supreme court picks". Ya, unconstitutionally holding up the vote on Obama's nominee and then changing voting rules to push Neil Gorsuch through was the right thing to do. Good thing, cuz if we'd had a centrist like Merrick Garland he may have overturned the Citizen's United decision and then you'd be fettered by big government because your "free speech" would be limited because you couldn't spend ad much as you want in influence elections. And we all know more money means more democracy.
3) "that its too bad the swamp hasn't been drained" because Trump was TOTALLY going to do that and then someone put a gun to his head and forced him to appoint all those billionaires from corporations, banks and lobbying firms. Damn shame that is.
4) The establishment wing of the Republican party is the reason why we don't have soooo much winning. If only those dumb establishment Republican's would just believe everything I believe then we could get so much done. That's how politics works, right? You refuse to budge until people who disagree with you come over to your side OR you just kill every bill. See how successful that strategy was with the health care bill? Bill was super dead even when the Republican party had the numbers. Big win!
4) That democrats are engaged in a conspiracy to trick America into believing that Republican harbor the racist fringe elements of our society when really its THEM because over a hundred years ago the coalitions they represented were entirely different. Things were one when back in history, they can never change, therefore Democrats are the racists.

So in fewer words any of this shit.
  • 2 1
@freestyIAM: Got it. Anyone that disagrees with you on politics is racist. Thanks for clarifying.
  • 1 0
@Session603: nice come back. Ahh im going to need some aloe for all that burn. But yes, if you believe point 4 yes, yes you are a big fat racy racist. If you believe 1 through 3 then youre a crack pot. Thus racist crack pot. Let me know if you need anything else cleared up. Like Nazis are bad ir ither things that are clear to good decent people.
  • 1 0
@freestyIAM: My mistake. People that disagree with you on politics are not only racist, but also Nazi sympathizers. Good talk. Thanks for a rational, fact based discussion devoid of any personal attacks or name calling. Clearly you're a really balanced and well spoken individual. Do go on and spread your message, I'm sure you'll be a great asset to your cause.
  • 1 0
@Session603: will do. Oh an feel free to address the substance of the agrument anytime you like. Otherwise, sidestepping is a snooze annd I'm losing interest
  • 2 0
@freestyIAM: There is exactly zero substance in any of the hate filled rhetoric you've been posting here. Baseless name calling is not an argument. All you've done is demonstrate your ignorance and intolerance. I won't give credence to your ideology of hate by engaging you any further.
