Ullr cranked up the snow this winter.

PRESS RELEASE: Whistler Mountain Bike Park

There’s too much snow for Whistmas

The recent unexpected invasion of the white fluffy stuff has us deep in dig-out mode, which means our opening day is delayed until May 19 (conditions permitting). If you can believe it, the Fitzsimmons Zone is still largely covered with more than two feet of snow!

The trail fairies are out waving their shovels and are working hard to get the park ready for you. Make sure to high-five the trail crew and mountain operations team when you see them in the Village as they put in the hard labour to get the park ready to shred.

Lift-assisted, gravity-fuelled laps are on the horizon.

After a long hibernation and deep winter, Opening Day is coming in hot… (or, actually, cold… but who’s counting).

Passes are on sale now.

Sleep now, ride later… thank you for your patience!

No signs of party trains or party shirts on A-Line so far.

Maybe the additional snowpack will mean the province spends slightly less time on fire this summer. One can hope... and I definitely do. I'd trade a later opening for less fires, personally.

Hey bruh, did you know on average over the last 100 years Canada has had less fires and less damage caused by fires, it’s actually a downward trend. But hey keep drinking that Kool-Aid bill gates is selling.

@tylerd99: @tylerd99: 2021 was third worst ever recorded and worst since 1958. I think the reporting in "covid years" needs a grain of salt.

All I can say as a resident of North Vancouver is, for the last few years, there have been a couple weeks per summer where the sky is brown/black with wildfire smoke and you can barely exercise outside.

I don't need bill gates to tell me that's not normal and probably not a great sign.

Look at these comments. We're so doomed lol.

Btw y'all - global warming refers to the rise in global average temperature. It's happening, and it's caused by the ghg effect of excess co2 in the atmosphere - a property of co2 known since literally the 1800's.

Climate change refers to the complex suite of environmental changes that happen at more regional scales as a result of global warming. The global atmospheric/hydrospheric system is very complicated, with processes driven by gravity and the coriolis effect that drive weather/climate/oceanographic process down to local scales.

Don't pretend to understand what's going on if you don't understand this stuff. Listen to scientists y'all.
  • 6 1
@tylerd99: that's great news!! Did you hear that everyone? We don't have to worry about fires because Tyler here says they are on a downward trend. This is great news! Don't hire any firefighters. Light all the fires in the woods you can. Shoot off fireworks in wilderness areas. Make sure to do you gender reveal somewhere flammable.

@WildboiBen: listen to the same scientists that put out all the Covid propaganda? Nah, I rather not listen to the fear-mongering people who are spreading lies. The climate has always been changing and there is no reason to be worried now.
  • 5 1
@p-m-z: Guessing the "no reason" part is your favorite.
  • 7 2
@p-m-z: ok please explain to me why the observed warming trend is natural and not the result of human activities (aka. "anthropogenic" - there's a new word for ya).

You're going to have to address some things though:

Why has the global average temperature begun to rise steadily, escaping the stable oscillations that established a consistent interglacial cycle from the late pleistocene into the early holocene, immediately following industrialization?

Can you refute the findings that CO2 concentrations cause a ghg effect? Given the tremendous increase in atmospheric CO2, why would that not create a ghg effect? You seem very confident so I'm sure you can provide a well-constructed answer.

Another question: Why are our climate models so accurate and successful in making predictions if the ghg effect of rising CO2 that's included in these models isn't real?
  • 7 9
@WildboiBen: taken in whole, the climate change message is dubious and undisciplined. On the science side, climatologists have been caught fudging the numbers. They won't debate or defend their work. I'm hard-pressed to find a prediction that has come true. On the politics side, climate change is being pushed by hypocritical blow-hards with ocean front property, private jets, and gargantuan individual carbon footprints. On the economic side, climate policy always makes things more expensive, which is hugely regressive and impacts the poor and middle class the hardest. And then there's the media....

These people at least deserve a sideways glance for their gratuitous and predictable messaging. We'd get better policy as a result.
  • 8 2
@TwoNGlenn: oh hey a real armchair scientist! Where's your source on climatologists "fudging the numbers"? I don't know what you mean they won't defend their work. Refusing to debate Ben Shapiro doesn't mean they aren't working to communicate the issue to the public.
  • 3 4
How can it be global warming when snow exists?
  • 5 1
@TwoNGlenn: there's really more to address in your comment than I have time for. But if you think action on environmental issues is bad for economics because it costs money, get ready to see the cost of inaction! Spoiler: It's much higher.
  • 5 7
@WildboiBen: the only armchair scientist between us is you. My comment is coming from a skeptical tax payer and citizen point of view. If you haven't availed yourself to the other side of the argument, then you've accepted the whole narrative without question. I'm not a denier, but there is a certifiable degree of bullspit being peddled.

Aside from that, this is a bike website. If you really wanna argue, pm me and I'll come up with all the examples you don't really want to read.
  • 5 7
@TwoNGlenn: well said. I can articulate the Climate change side very well, yet no one cares to try and articulate the skeptic side...they just resort to name calling which is what you do when you can't refute an argument.
  • 7 4
@TwoNGlenn: actually I'm a real scientist lmao. Just defended my master's thesis in environmental science yesterday actually.
  • 4 3
@TwoNGlenn: Go read an IPCC report, or some primary literature.
  • 5 4
If you're not a scientist then you don't have the background knowledge necessary to be an informed skeptic. Y'all really have no idea how much goes into real scientific research. Get thousands of dollars in grant money and earn a PhD and then you'll be able to do what the world's top scientists are doing. All of the "refutations" to climate science have answers that nobody who actually calls themselves a "climate skeptic" seems to be interested in listening to.
  • 5 8
@WildboiBen:But this is the same rationale that ketanji jackson said when asked about gender and she replied "I'm not a biologist". The logic you're implying if carried out means no woman could write a book about men, no asian could right a book about america, no paraplegic could talk about running....it's a fallacy. One need not have a PHD, only a set of critical reasoning skills to look at simple data and say "Yes, there is changing climate...as it always has...and there are logical reasons for the 'extremes' of weather. " Have you ever considered that Environmental Science has a severe echo-chamber complex considering things like "climate change" are what keep you in business?

That's what grant money is for. It doesn't make it's way into people's pockets. That would be fraud. What are the "political motivations" lol what does that mean?  @WildboiBen: I don't listen to anything "oil execs" have to say. They are not top blame anyway, they are only selling what we all demand, including you.

The policies of western governments are informed by greed, not science, wake up. The real agenda is to tax and control the general population. Do you really think any government or liberal billionaire gives a shit about the climate? lol No, they only care about taking your money and your freedom.
  • 5 1
@tunnel-vision: so just to be clear you think that specifically liberal billionaires (not the conservative ones?) are trying to raise taxes and "control" people?

What is the tax money being used for then, if not green infrastructure, and ya know everything else that tax money funds - like the military, police, fire departments, healthcare? Do you think they're pocketing it or something? And to what end are they trying to "control" us lol like is this some Pinky and the Brain world domination scheme?

Sorry, not sure what "wake up" means. I'm assuming you mean something like "Hey! Subscribe to this unsubstantiated false narrative that I've convinced myself is true due to my own delusional paranoia!"

  • 5 1
@TwoNGlenn: ah ok thanks for providing a source. So these are some "predictions" from some economists and the first one says that products will become services and everyone will be tracked.

So, just like with COVID, the thing conservatives seem to consistently miss is that adaptive policies require some kind of sacrifice, like wearing masks or getting a vaccine, or reducing consumption to fight climate change. Y'all would rather promote this crazy narrative that they're trying to "take your freedoms away", when the only people really doing that are conservatives. In Florida, it's illegal now to say "gay" in schools - a blatant violation of free speech y'all pretend to care so much about.

Conservatives consistently claim to be "patriots" concerned for peoples' rights, even though they're the ones trying to take away peoples' rights. If anything, all the dystopian policies you're worried about, like being tracked, are supported by conservatives.

I seriously wonder what y'all would say had you been alive when vaccines were mandated for small pox, or when food was rationed for WWII. Afterall, external problems don't exist and everything is an attack on you, personally, right?
  • 2 4
@WildboiBen: in Florida, it’s illegal to discuss sexuality with Kindergartners through 2nd graders. Nowhere does it mention “gay.” Diversity your news sources. The rest of your rant seems similarly informed. No disrespect to you, but the whole binary conservative/liberal feud is tedious and unhelpful.
  • 6 1
@TwoNGlenn: oh yeah the feud is tedious and unhelpful, but here we are. Ignoring the political division doesn't make it go away. And it's really only conservatives who consistently deny science and get upset about new regulations, while working to undermine the rights of others, to marry, for instance.

Thing is, y'all also can't even give me a coherent account of what you think is happening. The only source you've provided to suggest there's a hidden agenda to control us all is an entertainment piece. I mean, why do you think they would create a fake narrative to push a "green agenda" lol? Sounds like the plot of some crappy b movie.

I brought up the oil execs earlier because they are actually raking in billions and in the past have funded bunk studies and lobbied to convince people that climate change isn't real. And yet, you think that scientists - very few of whom are wealthy at all - are all somehow in on a big global conspiracy to drive up taxes from some unknown reason and "control" people. It's ridiculous.
  • 3 4
@WildboiBen: lol at conservatives being the only science deniers. Masks didn’t make a difference, lockdowns didn't work, school closures made things worse, the vaccines weren’t as effective as advertised, natural immunity is a thing. There are only two genders. I could go on. Liberals have been telling us the opposite of all the above for a while because “science!”
  • 5 0
@TwoNGlenn: you could go on, what - loudly misunderstanding science? Nothing that you've said is supported by real science. But hey you wouldn't know if you only pay attention to right-wing media sources. Guessing you haven't actually read anything from a scientific publication. It's just not science if you don't already agree with it, right?

And just fyi "natural immunity" is a thing, and it can also be called natural selection. So you're advocating for letting people die.
  • 2 4
@WildboiBen: Do you honestly believe any government, conservative or liberal or any billionaire or Hollywood celebrity really cares about the climate? They are just virtue signaling for your vote or click. Do you honestly think your tax dollars are efficiently spent on green infrastructure to meaningfully lower emissions? Governments will not save the day, they are just as greedy as any corporation. They are just using the 'climate crisis' as an excuse to track and tax us, all under the guise of 'protecting the climate'. Its great you care about the environment etc but you're delusional if you think any government is interested in more than your vote and money.
  • 2 4
@WildboiBen: I will concede any point that you can prove wrong. Please point me in the direction of a peer-reviewed study that lists genders beyond male and female.
  • 5 1
@TwoNGlenn: You're really showing that you have no clue about gender, sex, or science in general. The question that you think is a challenge makes it painfully obvious that you have not actually done any reading in this with a genuine openness to learning.

Gender and sex are not the same thing. Gender is the way a person feels and it bears absolutely no impact on you, so I'm inclined to think your ignorance here boils down to nothing more than bigotry.

Here's a good source for you to start understanding though - biological sex is a lot more complicated than what you learned in high school. Your understanding of natural processes is so limited. I can promise you are utterly clueless about what is actually happening at the molecular level.

@WildboiBen: I read both of those articles in their entirety and the incredibly large amount of philosophy that is laden in their “data” is nearly impossible to miss. You can try to bring your idea of gender and sex being somehow separated, but try and talk about this to a farmer and you’ll get laughed out of the room. Because philosophy is no match for biology. Facts don’t care about feelings.
  • 2 5
@WildboiBen: I’ll read those when I get a quiet moment. Maybe in the mean time you might want to read up on that Florida law you don’t know anything about.
  • 5 0
@TwoNGlenn: I did. So, it doesn' explicitly state that you can't say gay, but it is written in such a vague way that it could be interpreted that way - which is common in shady legislation. And the fact that it comes from a notoriously anti-lgbt state doesn't help. The whole thing is absolutely absurd and will utimately do a lot of harm.
  • 5 1
@preach: a farmer doesn't know shit about how biology works at a physiological and milecular level. They're not biologists ffs. The "philosophy" you're percieving is your own bias because you obviously don't understand what you're reading lol.

Where's the philosophy in "there is evidence in both rodents and humans of sex differences in the volume of specific brain sub-regions, neuronal gene expression and physiology."?

You can also click the cited references to delve further if you think it's based on pHiLoSoPhY. You'd better be able to explain in detail why the methods and conclusions are wrong with the expertise of a biologist - or a psychologist/sociologist in the case of gender. Betting you can't do that though.

Yeah the irony of you using that stupid Ben Shapiro quote is that, like him, you really don't care about actual facts. I've given you some and you're dismissing them simply because you don't like them. They suggest you're wrong. And you certainly haven't come back with any sources of your own. I'm wondering when your self-awareness will kick in.

@TwoNGlenn: I worked in Switzerland just down the road from the World Economic Forum for over a decade. Lots of interaction with them as they were somewhat related to the business I was in. The fascination with the WE Forum as some sort of cabal of elite plotting for world domination is fascinating. It's a f*cking conference business. They sell seats at conferences full stop. Very expensive seats and they've been very successful at it but to assume that somehow they collectively exert power at a global level is laughable.

Late opening out of Vail's control (unless you want to blame them for snow); Creekside represents a significant investment in upload capacity for future years (something that they desperately needed); 12% increase encompasses the 24% increase to their minimum wage that they've put in place along with inflationary pressure on overall operations (the minimum wage is still inadequate as a living wage in the S2S and that's reflected in how hard it's been to staff up). But yeah boo Vail, evil, conspiring against me having fun.

They are spending money to expand your ridding terrain and lessen future lines, at the same time losing revenue from that temporary loss of terrain.
  • 3 0
@warmerdamj: Losing revenue in Whistler, really? For each of the rider giving up the season for this there is a queue to replace. The only result will be longer waiting in the village. They are simply investing, not losing at all.
  • 1 0
@bok-CZ: There is not a queue of riders looking to replace riders that don't go waiting in the shadows. There is only only one stat for rider traffic, the amount there. With part of the hill closed they will have less riders in attendance, they will have less people staying on the closed side, they will have less people eating on the closed side. If you think a mountain closes a massive chuck of terrain where they operate many other business and just keeps going as before you are mistaken. Just because you hate Vail doesn't make them less susceptible to these challenges.

I'm a perfect example, I live a few hours from Whistler and generally go stay there and ride a couple days a year. This year I will not because I don't want to deal with this, I'll wait and go back next year. There is nobody that is going to replace my business, there is only those who would have gone regardless and those who are not going to attend.
  • 1 0
@warmerdamj: dude, inflation has nothing to do with this…Its pure corporate greed..Typical from Vail.Ski pass next season is CHEAPER and they’ll have a brand new gondola running.Low staff in the summer months has become such a massive issue for them now, much simpler to cut on operations, and charge MORE money?
  • 1 0
@warmerdamj: borders are fully reopened now…and Crankworx is back…Loads of people will replace your business this year buddy…Most tourists dont even realize Creekside will be closed and dont care for it.The last few weeks of the season were completely NUTS last year.I had never since the mountain that busy in 20 years…as soon as they opened the US border it went crazy.Whistler hotels are always fully booked in core months during the summer, and it cant be really trying to find accommodation in normal times…This year will be full tilt I bet….if you dont go, others will take your spot.
  • 1 1
@neroleeloo: that's not what I mean, there's no spot to take. Those people are going to go regardless of whether I go or not. Even if millions of people roll through there there is still lost revenue from the ones who don't go that would have otherwise. I'm not saying this is impacting them, but it still exists.
  • 1 0
@neroleeloo: I said nothing about inflation.
  • 1 0
@warmerdamj: I haven't said a single word against Vail this time and if Creekside is closed I guess the only staff there will be diggers. No lift boys, patrol etc. Also next time there just look around to see how many people goes there not only for park riding or biking at all and realise they're not making money only on lifts and trails, but simply on everything possible. On the other hand I don't get any point how your couple days off would affect this.
I would definitely postpone my plans if I was about to go for a whole season as I really like Creekside a lot, but having it few hours of drive it wouldn't be a stop for me. Also think about all the expats who simply can't choose when they visas will be valid, are there and wants to ride.

They do have a snowmobile season, it's called winter. Unless you are suggesting that people bring snowmobiles to ride in the park on a couple feet of patchy snow?

Actually I’ve never ridden a snowmobile and I’ve never been anywhere near Whistler but just thought maybe it’d be a way to open the park sooner(assuming it’s one park) and generate sum mo money but I’ve no idea what Its like there . maybe one day if Im lucky but Florida @warmerdamj:

@Crankhed: I see, no snowmobiles are more of a backcountry thing that people do outside of resort boundries vs a revenue source. Like going out on dirt bikes or an ATV. I'm sure people would love to take them in the park though lol. But that would likely never be allowed, all though I don't live there, just go there sometimes.
