TWO MAD CATZ

June 2010: An 16 year old Sam Hill apprentice of the Monster/Specialized/Mad Catz team arrives in Fort William town. His name is Troy Brosnan and he rides to a 4:53.8 and it places him 57th.

June 2014: A 20 year old Troy Brosnan arrives in Fort William town. He rides to a 4:36.6 and it places him one spot ahead of his former master and into the history books as the first rider to take their inaugural win on the most brutal track in downhill racing.

bigquotesYeah it got pretty wild in the commentary box on Brosnan's run didn't it...probably gonna get in trouble for that one if I'm honest. You've gotta go mad if someone's that good and they're the last man down the mountain haven't you...Yeah. Go crazy - Sir Robert Warner - professional commentator extraordinaire

Martin Maes may have beaten Loris today in a World Cup DH but Loris beat Martin in an EWS race last year so as far as we can reckon they are even regardless of racing discipline.

Hill looks happy for Troy in the last picture, but its almost like getting beat by your younger brother because Troy was Sam's protégé on Monster-Specialized for several years. It was such an amazing race, can't wait for Leogang now!

one of the most competitive world cups so far.. the last riders had me and my mates on the edge of our seats, we were screaming when Sam finished, then came Troy and we all just lost it! props to Connor Fearon for getting mad fast at the top section

I think Troy on podium is a new achievement for Hill. He got the podiums himself already, now he got his protégé there. It should be awesome for Hill!

Yeah, that is crazy eh. And, when they interviewed him he said something to the effect of 'it' feels like I've been waiting forever to get a win'. I guess two years is forever when you are a high level competitive athlete, however, it is crazy how quickly he went from Juniors to hanging with and then beating the big boys. Class act and well deserved. Well done!

Yeah for sure, now we have 10-15 riders who are all potential winners. Starting to feel like we need more world cup venues

Agree with that for sure, Round in New Zealand would be great with all the awesome tracks they have there.

Great idea bob, possibly have it the week before or after the Australian race if it makes getting crews transported over here easier? Either country is a great place for some down time. I've made the trip to Canda and England a few times and the flight is a killer if you're flying cattle class. The fact that Troy did it back to back (BDS then WC) shows his commitment.

What a race! Give Connor Fearon another year and we could have two Adelaide pinners and a West Australian sharing the podium Big Grin

Im too used to the fmb series where the most awesome run wins.. lots of respect for the fast dudes but there's no comparison between a boring fast rider thats a half second faster then some dude doing 30' manuals and 45' moto whips. Danny hart won that race, at least in my eyes.

I really don't gotta love him, honestly find him one of the most irritating people on the DH circuit. He's definitely trying too hard to be "cool".

troy is really becoming the all around rider, his a light rider with brilliant technical ability yet can pedal with the big boys. I think we are seeing the turn were the big guys are no longer the only peddlers. Stoked for the aussies this race, massive bummer for hannah he was in such good form this season. Unfortunate to see the womens decided on flats too, Would have loved to see them all get down mech free.

I was just thinking that you would be thinking that!
  • 1 0
 Thats what i was thinking!
  • 1 0
now i'm thinking you guys need to change your thinking....
  • 6 2
With all the tech being thrown into carbon frames, suspension that NASA would be proud of and the wheel size Jihad, surely by now manufacturers could have figured out how to make a tire that doesn't pinch flat... Pointless having all that tech yet the that piece of rubber that connects that tech to the ground spoils the show... C'mon guys... or is this the way to keep the factory busy?
  • 4 0
I think flats in DH courses are rider's mistakes. So it adds variations to the skills/luck you need to win a race. But yeah, I feel you Smile
  • 4 0
Isn't it strange that it was the lighter-weight women who were pinch flatting? Were the ladies picking different lines that resulted in flats, or just a difference in a riding technique?
  • 3 1
@ SunSetter Could argue the same point about the need for suspension in the first place if skill was all that counted. Tires definitely need the same R&D that suspension gets. Start making them tougher instead of worrying about minute variations in tread patterns. Minion is King anyway in that regard... Now Maxxis must make it immortal!
  • 2 1
In my case it's usually a matter of braking on a rock or in a turn, or over-braking. I'd say that 9 times out of 10, my reaction to a flat is "you bloody idiot", not "oh dear what horrible luck I have". The women brake a lot more than the men so to me it makes sense that they'd flat more often
  • 2 0
Schwalbe has solved that problem with their dual valve system. I believe it will be available to mortals come the end of the year!
  • 2 0
+1 to Schwalbe, but from what I read on a pinkbike article about that dual valve system, is it true that wider rims increase the chance of flat? I though wider rims would decrease this...I'm confused lol
  • 2 0
Wider rims decrease the change of pinch flatting a tire seeing as the rim edges are further apart. Also wider rims reduce the chance of rolling the tire thus adding more stability and allowing you to run lower pressure. By the way when I saw wide I mean over 32mm cause 27mm isn't wide...

i just realized how big brosnan's first win is. Every single top rider, all the greatest world champions and world cup winners were there and in great shape. It wasn't like he stole the win or anything. He simply beat Hill, Smith, Gwin, Minnaar, Atherton and many other great riders straight up.

 Brosnan " He`s the real deal "

is it "the most brutal track in dh"? wouldn't that honor belong to val di sole or champery? not looking for a fight here - just curious.

The content on Pinkbike is nothing short of World class ! It's makes CNN & the BBC's websites look like something that Ron Burgundy's hungover intern would produce. Keep up the tremendous work & thanks to the sharp shooters out there too. We salute you fellas !

 LOOK AT THE TIME!!!
Brosnan's winning time according to the results page was 4:36.580 not a 4:40.8.
In a sport where hundredths of seconds count for everything I would hope the correct time would get posted when it's being used at the heading of an article.
It's especially important because Troy won on a bike with wheels that were 650B; where as last year's winning time set by Gee Atherton was a 4:36.712...on 26" wheels...which are now dead...and slower...(.132) seconds slower to be exact.
Although in 2010 when Troy Brosnan placed 57th with a time of 4:53.8 Gee Atherton won with a time of 4:35.70(on 26" wheels) which is .88 faster than Troy's 2014 winning time on 650B wheels; so maybe 26" is faster? So confused.
All marketing hype and hundredths of seconds aside, stoked for the young Aussie pinner and his former Master. When arrow points meet head on, what has this to do with the power of skill?

I wouldn't compare the previous times too much, as tracks change between races. But yeah, that was worth staying up for last night, what a race! Smile

If we look at top speeds in qualifying(which we must as there are no top speeds posted in the final results. Conspiracy?), Michael Vickers who rides for Steve Peat Syndictate qualified 146th, but had the top speed of 86.086kph(That's 53 miles an hour!).

Brosnan is young and still a lot of years to come. Really excited for the next race and see Sam Hill on the podium again. It will be a battle for sure.

That was just an awesome race to watch. For the last 10 especially, was on the edge of my seat as each rider came down! This is what World Cup DH is all about.

"Still at least he can be sure he'll never have to wear sunglasses with a full-face."
By far the best caption in this article even though we all know we'll be washed up DH racers at some point...

That's weird, where are all the ignorant anti-demo trolls now? Maybe it IS the rider and not the bike. Twats.

Outside of that, what a fantastic race!! Truly what it should be, keeping you guessing until the end. Unbelievable talent from every team.
