Remembering Stevie Smith, 1989-2016

Two years have passed since the death of Canada's greatest downhill mountain bike athlete. Many came to know him from his segment in Seasons where his mum shuttled him to the top of the mountain for lap after training lap, and then by his success on the World Cup circuit. But more than just a driven athlete and fierce competitor, Smith was humble and grounded off the track and a notable influence on all young and aspiring Canadian gravity racers and others around the world.

Downhill at the 2013 Leogang UCI MTB World Cup Finals Austria.

A force on the Canadian downhill racing scene for years, he became an international household name in 2013 after pocketing World Cup wins at Leogang, Hafjell, and Mont-Sainte-Anne. Those efforts culminated in the World Cup overall title the same year—downhill racing’s ultimate achievement.

Less than a year ago, the Stevie Smith Bike Park opened on Vancouver Island. This bike park will be Stevie's legacy. Not only will the talent it helps create keep the Canadian team strong in the future, but it gives the kids of Nanaimo a safe place to ride their bikes and put their energy towards something constructive that will keep them out of trouble.

The Stevie Smith Memorial park is set to be a hot bed for bike riding on Vancouver Island and together with the Velosolutions pump track, the dirt jumps built by Jordie Lunn and the existing BMX track, the legend of Stevie Smith will live on in future generations and the thriving community of riders.

Stevie Smith massively impacted our world of mountain biking and we were not ready to say goodbye to him so soon. Through shared photos and memories, our community paid tribute to the incredible person he was - both on and off the bike, and the legacy he leaves behind.

during the 2016 UCI MTB World Cup round two Cairns Australia.

We miss you, Stevie.

Just watched his ghost run from Fort Bill again and brings a tear. So happy UCI, RedBull and all the other partners came together to make that happen. Thank you. #LongLiveChainsaw

The only thing about the ghost run is that Stevie would have been way faster than the camera was panning. #longlivechainsaw

His smile gets more people to want to get out and ride and be good to each other on trails than hundreds of MTB videos. Long live Chainsaw spirit!

an absolute canadian hero. did nothing but follow his dreams and accomplished what he worked his whole life for. it always saddens me to think about what a loss stevie is to the biking community as a whole, not only in canada, but then i remember his passion, attitude, and love of anything with 2 wheels and then i start to get stoked to ride. he was my idol, growing up watching a small town canadian boy become one of the best dh riders of all time was awe inspiring, reminding me their should never be a ceiling on my dreams.

Canadian National Treasure. Global ambassador for mountain biking. Charming and highly likable. An adopted brother to all who enjoy biking. We all miss you, Stevie.

I think everyone liked Stevie, he always seemed so charismatic when being interviewed and he just seemed so unstoppable when riding and those last three rounds in 2013 were a pleasure to watch. RIP Stevie Smtih Longlivechainsaw

Oh my god. I'm 3 minutes into the first video and....goosebumps.

When Mom says "pinning it," you know it's a family affair.

Miss you buddy, we all do.

I was just at the Stevie Smith bike park last weekend. I was blown away by the amount of under 13 yr old talent at that park. 8--9 yr old girls blasting 8-10 feet over the wooden kickers...kids doing insane gaps throughout the pump track. No town in the world, over the next few years, will be able to compete with the talent that Nanaimo and the Stevie Smith bike park is pumping out. Chainsaw IS long lived.

Living in nanaimo and being down at the bike park multiple times a week it still blows my mind seeing all these lil guys and gals just tearing it up!

as a parent it is inspiring and so heavy to watch he and his mom's segment in seasons. i hope she and stevie's family and friends are well. rest in peace, stevie.

Man, this article gave me a buzz. I remember I used to watch the Seasons segment of Stevie over and over. I even showed my mom how cool his mom was, in hopes that she would shuttle me.. Didn't ever happen though. Its great to see the love and support people have for Stevie. More people need to be like him, SPREAD the love... #longlivechainsaw

His and Bulldogs section in UnReal has been one of my favourites for a while now, plus who can hate on going sideways on a mobility scooter while dressed as an old man.

That was inspiring, you can truly see in these videos what mountain biking means to so many, and how people get on. It just epitomizes the community of how we (as pedantic standard hating, water bottle loving ass hats) connect with each other and ride to have fun. Loved it

stevie smith's story to success and his mothers amazing support were things i always found to be very rare and inspiring in mountain biking. the people with the biggest opportunities for pro careers typically have no shortage of financial , or personal support. steve beat the odds and became a legend. i had a #longlivechainsaw sticker on my old specialized, and now have one on my new devinci. i still can't believe he's gone :'(

NSMB.COM : STICKER PACKS ARE $10CAN AND PROCEEDS GO TO HIS LEGACY FUND, BUY THEM.

That second vid is one I routinely watch for some motivation and inspiration to go ride, week in and week out. Yeah, he was fast as F@#k racing, but he always looked like he was having even more fun just rippin' between the tape. Thats mostly why I'm a fan. Thank you, Stevie, for showing us all what fun is on a bike in any setting. Your legend lives on. R.I.P.

Young and old alike. Stevie inspired us all. Weather DH was your thing or not. He embodied Vancouver Island life to the fullest. His passing still hits hard for many of us. Gone but never ever forgotten. Thank you for all you gave us Stevie #longlivechainsaw!

That seasons segment was inspiring, shows you what dedication, commitment, and support can get you. In 2011 I just got on the chairlift as Steve Smith passed the finish line to win the Canadian Open DH. Watching him I heard of the name before but didn't know he was the young lad in the seasons movie. Only to hear his name more as he moved a top the podiums in the years to come. Seeing him get to the pinnacle of our sport, fulfilling a dream was pretty awesome. An inspiration to all of us. #longlivechainsaw

It feels like a personal loss. Can't be a Canadian thing as he obviously touched so many people internationally. I think he embodied the things that we love about this sport.

Not too many get to predict their own destiny and become a world champion. A life too short, but one well lived. Will always be an inspiration to me to go faster than I should. Long live chainsaw!

I was never able to meet Stevie, nor have I had the chance to meet anyone who has. But the lasting impression that he has left on this world is truly incredible. His love for life and appreciation for where he was and how he got there was unrivaled and infectious. A true legend in this world, and as we all know "heroes get remembered, but legends never die." Rest In Peace Stevie #longlivechainsaw
