Check Out: Shoes, Winter Riding Solutions, & More - January 2019

by Sarah Moore

A lot of gear comes across our desks here at Pinkbike. Check Out is a monthly round-up of everything our tech editors have gotten their hands on. Sometimes it's products we're doing long-term tests on, other times it's stuff we're stoked on but don't have time to fully review. And, sometimes it's crazy shit someone sent us unsolicited and we're having a laugh.

Etnies Jameson Mid Crank Shoe

Etnies Semenuk model

Etnies Semenuk model
Etnies Semenuk model

Features

• Asymmetric cuff
• Geo-Hex tread pattern
• Designed with input from Brandon Semenuk

• Colors: black, stone, burgundy
• Price: $100 USD
www.etnies.com

bigquotesProps to Brandon Semenuk for getting his own signature shoe, although I find it kind of strange that it's called the Jameson. There's also the fact that it has a suede exterior, which isn't the ideal fabric choice for muddy conditions. They are comfy, though, and while they're not the best option for long pedaly rides or DH laps, they'll work for the occasional dirt jump or pumptrack session.Mike Kazimer

Bontrager OMW Gloves

photo

Features

• Zippered handwarmer pocket
• 200g Thinsulate Platinum Insulation
• $180 USD

• Nose wipe on thumb and forefinger
• Sizes: XS - XXL
www.trekbikes.com

bigquotesIt's been a relatively mild winter so far, but if the snowpocalypse does arrive I'm ready. The OMW gloves are a 2-in-1 system - the inner glove is warm enough to wear on its own, but when the temperature really plummets it's time to pull on the overmitt. There's also a handwarmer pocket on the back of the inner glove for when things get really frigid. At that point I'd rather be on skis, but for the dedicated snow bikers out there the OMW gloves should help make sure you can still feel your fingers at the end of every ride. Mike Kazimer

• Fully gusseted tongue prohibits intake of dirt and debris

• Women's-specific fit
• Modern lifestyle Performance Fit
• Approximate weight - 12.8 oz (361 g)
• Sizes: 5-10
• Colors: Deep Purple or Charcoal
• Price: $130 USD
www.rideconcepts.com

bigquotesRide Concepts is a newcomer on the block, and it's great to see that they went full in on their women's line. The Hellions have ample protection for your toes and the impact-absorbing soles are an interesting concept. The shoes are on the stiff side, but the fit is super comfortable.Sarah Moore

Wahoo Kickr Core Trainer

photo

photo
The trainer is easy to set up and pair to your phone or laptop.
photo
There's nothing in the virtual world of virtual sports that will have you cranking out laps quicker than being on the side of the road while hundreds of go-getters you don't know pass you by.

Features

• Power and controlled resistance
• Compatible with training apps
• $900 USD

• QR, 12x142, 12x148 axle compatible
• Electromagnetic resistance
www.wahoofitness.com

bigquotesI took about a ten year hiatus from riding the trainer because almost anything was more enjoyable. In that time a lot has changed. Wahoo's Kickr Core trainer isn't an inexpensive product by any means but it makes riding through lousy weather and actually doing structured workouts exponentially more bearable. The Kickr Core works with road bikes and mountain bikes - bearing in mind you'll need to throw on a Shimano style cassette that's compatible. I've been using the trainer off and on for a couple of months now and it's completely changed how I feel about indoor virtual reality cycle sports (yes, it's a thing). I've paired it with the ever-so-popular Zwift app and have been able to test my lack of fitness against others around the globe. You can just get on and ride or, with the app, do structured workouts and even race live. Sure, it's pretty nerdy and if the option is at all there to be outside on trails, you know where I'll be. However, if you find yourself losing fitness throughout the winter and are unwilling to resort to crossfit or spin classes, I've found the smart trainer paired with Zwift could be a really good option. Plus, it's kind of fun.Daniel Sapp

So I can buy Gortex waterproof snowboard gloves for roughly 65$ canadian but because these are “mountain bike” gloves retail is $180 lol. Thsoe gloves look so thick you might as well save the cash and just use snowboard ones anyways lol
  • 19 0
You can also buy Goretex Snowboard gloves for $180. In both cases, waiting for things to go on sale is probably the best option.
  • 8 4
I just bought Fox non Goretex, yet wateproof gloves for 35€ on CRC after owning 2 different pairs of Goretex gloves for 65-80€ (Gore and Sealskins) and I will never buy Goretex gloves again. Foxes do the job just as well, Goretex is not the best material for a glove. Gore glove started drinking water after less than half of a year and it would stay impregnated with Nikwax for no more than a week. In general my hands don't tolerate 5 finger gloves under 0C. I need double finger

How the hell are you supposed to hold a dental drill with those gloves??
  • 6 0
Hit me with a link to these $65 goretex gloves, i'm on the hunt

BS, show me where you can buy leather gortex gloves for less than $100

@WAKIdesigns: i see the cheapest model being $80 and looks like my hands would freeze within 3-4 seconds. I'm looking for the $65 goretex snowboard glove, for snowboarding.

Don’t knock it till you try it bra

@arrowheadrush: I got Dakine Gortex ones just in the mountain shop at Cypress a few weeks back because I forgot my regular ones at home. I think they gave me only 10% off because I have a seasons pass. I could shoot you pics of them if you want to message me your email or whatever.
  • 2 0
@arrowheadrush: These aren't Gore Tex (they have Black Diamond's proprietary membrane), but if things are cold enough for heavily insulated gloves, I'm probably not overly worried about things wetting out. I snowsealed mine and have had no problems. They aren't my summer bike gloves, but they're dextrous enough for skiing and cold weather mountain biking. If you go into the lodge where I ski, you'll see about five pair on the regulars' tables. And right now, you can get them cheap:

But these are 2 gloves in one, and have a sweet weed pocket bro
  • 6 1
Kinco gloves are $35 at any hardware store and will outlast any glove out there for skiing and winter riding. I’ve yet to find a “high-end” glove that even comes close, and wonder why I keep trying them. I guess if you only use them 5 times a year you’ll never know the difference.
  • 2 0
@arrowheadrush: why in the world would you like to pay for Goretex glove for any use at sub zero temperatures? The only performance advantage of goretex membrane is water repellence with basic breathability. Not snow repellence. Cheaper fabrics do it just as well.
  • 1 0
maybe it's the "mtb" tax applied ? i thought maybe the price is more than you $65 given it's 2 pairs of gloves - but, as always, us europeans will get the shaft and that'll go for sale over 200quid around here ( if ever ) - so if i REALLY want them i'll have to wait for sales, as i always do, because i'm a cheapo and can't afford retail - most likely i won't get them
  • 1 0
 @Mwmg15: Kincos - $20-30
  • 3 0
@knarrr: This guy gets its. Pig Skin Kincos and a jar of Snow Seal . That is all you ever need.
  • 1 0
@jjohn13: I've used Kincos. If you're not doing something where the toughness really matters, the similarly styled outdoor gloves are notably nicer and only a bit more.

I won't wear out my softer Black Diamonds gloves for years just skiing, biking, doing regular things. Now I reserve the Kincos for cold weather outdoor work (which I guess is exactly what they were made for).
  • 1 0
@knarrr: if you know, you know... only issue ive ever had with Kincos are them getting smelly and one pair the clip broke off so i cant attach wrist straps to them anymore

@Vaclav: there literally just overpriced vans
  • 3 0
Etnies was selling them for basically half off for a while, and i normally like etnies for casual shoes so got a pair. They are actually really nice as long as it is dry out.
  • 4 0
@JamesBonds: vans producing only garbage shoes, not even remotely close to jameson mt/jameson crank.
And vans costs exactly the same, btw.
  • 2 0
I find Etnies to be part of the most durable skate shoes on the market. Great for mountain bike if you don't mind a flexible sole.
  • 2 0
Got them for free. They took forever to break in and suck on my Cronk Brothers Stamp pedals. I'm sticking to my 5010's.
  • 16 2
180 bucks for gloves? Yeah right..
  • 4 0
What else would you wear with your $500 rain jacket?
  • 8 0
FYI bruh bruh the Jameson is a shoe that existed in the etnies line. this is that but cranked out. hence the name.
  • 10 2
$100?? For occasional dirt jumping and pump tracking? No.
  • 10 7
Sounds like you need to do more of both.
  • 7 0
@ADGproductions: I do, but according to Kazimer, not in a pair of these. Read the write up.
  • 2 2
I have a pair and they’re plenty stiff enough for trail riding. I’ve done a couple 30 mile rides in them with no problems.
  • 4 0
I recently purchased a Kickr core trainer, mounted my old mans unused Trek road bike, downloaded Zwift and have been enjoying plenty of riding during these cold, dark winter months. Whilst I rather be mountain biking, its a fairly pleasant alternative. Road cycling isn't my thing, but pedalling a bike, virtual or real is my bag! It was a hefty investment, but thus far has been worth every penny. It means I might have the fitness to complete the 'Ard Rock Enduro without dying!!
  • 14 7
Those women's RC's are more masculine than the Etnies!
  • 5 1
Ya the pink and purple really speaks to me ????
  • 5 5
I think the etnies are dope, you ain’t got no style lol

@gnarnaimo: he said they weren’t masculine lol
  • 1 0
@mkotowski1: I agree with him, and I still like them.
  • 1 0
I would totally wear that color if they made them big enough for me. But "Modern lifestyle performance fit" is such a meaningless string of marketing BS. What does that mean? Narrow? High arch support? Also, these shoes are "women-specific" to which women? Women with wide toes? Women with narrow heels? All of their information about fit seems designed to convey so little information that people have to buy the shoes to find out if they'll fit well.
  • 1 0
@chachmonkey: I missed 'Modern Lifestyle Performance Fit', so thanks for mentioning it because it is the funniest thing I've seen today. And there's a kangaroo in my back yard lying on his back scratching himself like and old man.
  • 1 0
@gnarnaimo: well I like them too so what the hell are you talking about
  • 1 0
@mkotowski1: Not even sure anymore. Thought you said he had bad style because he didn't think they were masculine. Meh
  • 2 0
@gnarnaimo: @mkotowski1: He felt somehow I have no style because I think the Etnies look girlie, so what he is basically saying is that girls have no style.
  • 3 1
Man I’m buying the semenuk shoes not to ride but because they look cool n i like to support my sport. Not everyone who buys Jordan’s play basketball, so why everyone who buys semenuks should ride bikes. They look good that’s all I need bro

 Hell yea
  • 2 0
I went out on a limb and got myself a pair of the Etnies for Christmas (the black ones, no way I'd pull off the white ones!), and I have to say I actually like them in DH and trail contexts. They feel nice and firm under foot, offer a reasonable amount of grip with the right pedals underneath, and the reinforcement on the inner side of the shoe is a nice touch.

I don't think they'll be as robust as my previous FiveTens that lasted me 6 years (they shouldn't have, but shoes are expensive these days...), but I half expected to go for one trial ride with the Etnies and end up returning them disappointed; instead I'll be riding these on the downhills and the trails until they wear out – which will be interesting to see the longevity, but still.

They cop a lot of flack on the internet, but underrated shoes IMO.
  • 2 0
I’ll second this. I’ve had a pair since November. I also have the standard Jameson. The mid crank edition is way stiffer and pretty great for trail rides. Not as stiff as free rider pros but I prefer them, you have more pedal feel. They’re also holding up remarkably well and the suede is surprisingly resilient.
  • 1 0
Just want to say, I loved the Semenuk's but they run narrow, which, could be an Etnies thing. I wear size 12 and don't have a super wide foot but they were tight. I sadly returned them. Personally, Globe was the best fitting and wearing skate shoes for me. Cheers

I'm looking for an alternative to Five Ten shoes and would be willing to try out the Ride Concept shoes. However, when they price themselves the same as Five Ten I'd pick Five Ten every time. If Ride Concepts wants to gain market shares then drop the price to less than $100. I think they'd see a lot more people jump on board vs pricing themselves the same as an established product.
  • 1 0
I’m getting a pair of Ride concepts this year due to the fact that I have a pile of five tens. I’ve had to replace them every 6 months. So if Ride concepts will last a year instead of 6 months at the same price they are a bargain!
  • 1 0
Also, the inner glove on the OMW (Old Man Winter) gloves are sold separately as the JFW (Jack Frost Winter) and are my faves for super cold CX/XC riding
  • 2 1
I was checking out that trainer today actually. One place that was selling it had a tonne of reviews and almost 50% of them were 1 star. I’m looking elsewhere.
  • 5 6
I'm probably going to get some hate for this because for some reason mtb'ers seem to be completely anti but....if you're considering an indoor trainer, I highly recommend getting a Peloton instead. Way more fun (IMO), built-in programs, classes, and coaching, with music, and you can watch hot chicks while you do it (or dudes, or chicks that look like your mom...whatever floats your boat).

Honestly, though, I was skeptical for a while but I finally got one about 1.5 months ago and the difference in my fitness has been amazing. I went from being consistently middle to back of the pack among my riding buddies to pulling away like I'm on an e-bike without even pushing hard. And I was already riding 3-4x/week when I was middle to back of the pack. In FTP terms I've jumped roughly 25% in a month.

Is it as fun as riding outside? Obviously freaking not. But it takes a helluva lot less time, it's a helluva lot more effective for improving fitness, and it's definitely more fun than spinning a kickr,

So there's my testimonial. Take it FWIW.
  • 6 0
 zwift is better IMHO
  • 2 1
@willsiebert: You think? I have to admit I've never actually done it on a regular basis, but I've tried my friend's and it seemed pretty boring. It's pretty much just spinning with a lame video game, no? That was my impression anyway. And my friend who had it got a Peloton and never touches the trainer. Maybe I was missing something, though. Still, whatever floats your boat and gets you training but personally I'm a big fan of the Peloton!
  • 4 0
Okay so I get the peloton thing; but for that price you can afford a smart trainer, an interactive program and a riding vacation... then when you're not using it it goes in your closest and you don't wind up with a 3k clothing rack.
  • 2 0
definitely get a smart trainer. Zwift and trainer road have much better training programs and you have the ability to use the bike you’d be racing with.

By the time you buy a peloton you can have a smart trainer + a road bike.
  • 2 0
An actual smart trainer and Zwift/trainer road blows the Peloton away. Not even close.

Peloton is for more for people would be doing spin class. A smart trainer is more for people that actually ride bikes outside.
  • 2 0
Haha here comes the hate. Downvotes, really?

Re: price--It's $2K. Please tell me where you can get a decent road bike and kick'r trainer for that. Plus, they offer 0% financing so it's basically $100/mo. for the bike and class membership if you do it that way. That's about the price of a decent gym membership where I'm from (and half the price of a CrossFit box).

As for the rest of the general smack talking, you sound a lot like people who have never actually ridden a Peloton. Yes, there are some stereotypical "spin" classes (which, btw, can be a lot of fun and are still a killer workout for any kind of cycling), but there are also classes taught by pro cyclists and, my personal favorite, Power Zone Training. These are highly structured and highly effective for training.

Anyway, if the Zwift/Kick'r works for you, sweet. All I'm saying is also consider the Peloton if you're in the market. It gets me training 6+ days/week and I really enjoy it. Not sure why the hate...
  • 3 0
I'll give another positive for the Peloton. If it were just me, I probably would have ended up buying a direct drive trainer/zwift setup. It is cheaper, gives you more accurate power numbers, you can hook it up to your bike so the setup is exactly the same as what you ride on the mountain/road.

However, I have a wife that also wants to workout at home in the cold boston winters and likes doing the spin classes so we ended up dropping our gym memberships and getting a peloton (saving money overall). End of the day, I f*cking love it. My biggest complaint is probably that i can't get the exact position/geometry i want, but i've gotten used to it.

I'll second @mpcremata on the power zone training and pro classes being good. They're the exact same structure as what my roadie buddies are getting off their training peaks programs.

Beyond that, I'd also argue that "spin style" classes might be better training for mountain biking than your typical roadie program. They typically tend to me high max output efforts (like you'd do on a mtb vs sustained roadie shit) and they will force you to engage your core more.
  • 1 0
you can use the Peloton app on a KICKR www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2Bd0YfhNhc
  • 1 0
 @mpcremata: KICKR CORE $899 www.wahoofitness.com/devices/bike-trainers/kickr-core-indoor-smart-trainer

New Road Bike $650 www.jensonusa.com/Giant-Contend-3-Bike-2019

Total $1550

If cost is really a factor you could get KICKR SNAP smart trainer for $599 You could probably find a good deal on a used bike for even less as well. Making you total investment in an awesome virtual cycling setup under and a bike for $1000. Also, there is no reason not to just use your mountain bike. The KICKR and CORE are both compatible with 142 and 148 axles right out of the box.

It's also the Crank version, which is not elaborated upon, nor shown in the description. These are Scotchgard and the inside is beefed up for crank hits and rubbing. They have some insulation to them as well and have extra support, since it's the Semenuk signature shoe. Hope that sheds some light.

I did 3000km the the last two winter and it helped me to keep my sanity while I couldn't ride because of a surgery... So I'm a Zwift lover even if I will take a real ride anytime over it!!
