Everything Must Go - DH World Cup 6 Finals - Leogang

Sep 23, 2013
by Nathan Hughes
That's it, that's all. The 2013 downhill season just came and went in a blink. What began with total Atherton dominance, concluded with absolute Smith monopoly... A hat-trick of wins, two in messy conditions and one this afternoon with the pressure gauge turned up to 11, ready to blow. Stevie had the run of his days with the unimaginable weight of hype and anticipation on his shoulders, a mass that would crush and choke anyone less than a full-on bicycle prodigy. Congratulations to the fastest mountain biker the modern world has known, Canadian, Stevie Smith!

Innes Graham
Innes Graham could only swoop in for 6th today, but don't forget has a whole other year to come in the juniors class to turn on the heat.

Not happy to stop at the qualifying Niederberger crushed the finals too dampening Vergier s overall winner vibes.

Jones amp Peaty
Mike Jones tore it up for 3rd today but it was enough to allow his French counterpart the series.

Second place today was enough for Loris snatch the junior overall. No small feat in a field as stacked as it has been this year.

A brilliant year for ladies racing... We hope you agree the girls have done us proud this season, picking up the pace substantially and throwing all the right shapes when it counts for some great photos and video. Nice one Rachel, Emmeline, Manon, Myrium, Morganne and everyone else!

I want to see what he can do on that Zerode with some financial backing. I think the G2 is a worldcup winning bike in the right hands.
  • 1 0
Can't believe he hasn't already been signed..it's a crime if no one signs him next year!
  • 3 0
markhouse I totally agree. A wee while ago I saw on a forum that the guys from Zerode were asking for ideas on how they might go about financially backing a team/if anyone on the forum were keen. Unfortunately since then one of the guys from Zerode passed away, but for their sake, Hope, Chris King, Funn, surely one of you lot could run a team??? Give the boys a call haha!

Yeah sad about Dodzy but Rob has made some great upgrades with the G2. I will have mine in a few months. It would be great if he could get the backing to run a team next year.

haha that was funny.
  • 4 1
Steves stock probably through the roof but we all know how quick that can change. Still, if he change up you can't blame a guy getting what he came for.

What I want for next weason, more support to the girls!

This season been a blast, thnx to all the riders and esp. Gee & Steve for battling it out to the end.
  • 3 0
I'm wondering what is funny about comparing Smith to Gwin? Both are world champions Both are capable of dominating parts of a season (Stevie did just win the last 3 races and looks considerably faster than anyone else in his runs right now. Stevie is the best rider in the world right now.
  • 8 1
stevie would turn into a gwin if he did. devinci is a superior to specialized pogo stick. he IS smart enough to know money doesn't buy wins! our local mountain and that WILSON does!
  • 3 9
flag GiantFaithUser (Sep 23, 2013 at 11:47) (Below Threshold)
If Stevie can dominate next season, ( by dominate I mean finish 10 seconds ahead of people) then you can compare him.
  • 4 0
Well for a start Gwin has never won a race by 10 seconds. 7.3 is his biggest margin so far but I think it's fair to say just like Gwin massively raised his game from 2010 to 2011 - Smith has also raised his game right bang in the middle of a season. Atherton is definitely stronger than he was last year too so I dont think you can accurately compare from one year to the next. Kovarik won a race by 12 seconds once, what does that make him?

And I say this as someone who has consistently defended Gwin from people who try to downplay his achievements. He was by far the best rider for the last two seasons and its up to him to regain that. People who talk like you generally have no appreciation of what it takes to win.
  • 2 3
Don't get offended jeez it's just pinkbike , haha damn .
  • 1 0
man I hope not. So far the last 2 big name racers who hopped on a Demo went from top-shelf to also-ran almost instantly. Its Specialized karma for their dickhole business practices hahaha.

Normally I don't post comments, but I have a few things to say....1) thank you for all of the support and kind words that have been given to my boy Stevie. 2) Thank you for all the nice comments directed at me, and yes, I am a very proud mom! 3) another thank you to those who posted the "Seasons" clip...made me tear up every time! 4) PLEASE stop with the Gee slamming....Steve worked very hard to get where he is, so has Gee. He may have not looked happy on the podium, but that would be very hard to do. He did go up to Steve and congratulated him, smiled, then shook his hand. That is not being a poor sport. Obviously, Gee is a very intense person; that is not a bad thing. Steve is also very intense, and I hope that when the time comes and he does not win a race, that people don't start slamming him. Considering the competition between all of the riders, it really is amazing how strong some of the friendships are. It is great when the fans have their favorite riders and like to show support, but lets try and keep it positive! Sorry for the rant, but I thought that as a mom, who is proud of her son's accomplishments, and who reads these posts, it made me feel bad for Gee's mom...maybe she reads these too! So before you want to say something negative about somebody, think about how their mom would feel. Again, thanx for all the wonderful posts....they made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!!!
  • 4 0
You are so correct and I personally apologize for my rant on Gee.. It was uncalled for. I was so happy for Steve that watching Gee react made me a bit mad. I thought he maybe should have been more happy for Steve, but you are right, he is a very intense competitor. Your son is my FAVORITE rider and I should be showing more respect for him by not being so down on Gee. Thanks for pointing that out, and thanks for being such a cool lady. Steve is the most sincere, humble, and professional rider I have ever met, and all of my congratulations go out to him and his accomplishments. Again, my apologies.
  • 3 0
@Stevesmom - You ROCK! Way to defend the guy who is not your son. I assumed that Gee's frown was directed at himself and not Stevie. Hope that's true, but the one truth I know is that the vast majority of PB posters don't know these guys and what's going on in their heads.

I also gotta say huge congrats to Stevie and the dedicated mom who helped him get there. As a father of two young guys who absolutely love Stevie and their bikes, you set a good example of what parents do for their kids.

It annoyed me all the crap spouted about Gee recently. Same as the usual Semenuk rants. The riders are there because of their skill and determination, and how they get there and apply themselves is down to them. We're there to watch them perform on the bikes, and if they are a likeable person to boot (hello Stevie!) then great, but if not why does anyone really care? Shall we bring back Warner and get everyone else to slow down just for the post race interview? ;-)

  • 22 4
I prefer pissed off Gee, at least he's honest, I like honest people, they are reliable. "Attitude is everything" - they always forget to add which attitude is the right one. This is a proffessional sport, Gee behaves right to the occasion. Congrats to Stevie, hands down to Gee!
  • 15 1
i think its totally ok when he shows it. and i think steve can understand that too.
  • 23 0
Yeah those 4 smiling guys had nothing to lose and had not lost anything. Gee had just lost the one thing he's been fighting for with his heart and soul all season, he must have been devastated! As anyone would be! Would you have a big grin on your face??
  • 11 0
If I had worked my ass off for a year to JUST miss out on being #1 in the world, something I REALLY wanted, then I'd have a BIG grin plastered all over my face too!
  • 9 1
Yea the other 4 guys are stoked with their results because those results are good for them. When you are Gee, who can and has been on top before, its a disappointing result. It a completely different perspective. Things change once you have won and I'm sure it will happen to Stevie too. 3 years ago Gwinn was just the chill guy who took up downhilling a few prior ago and started dominating. Before you know it he's in a pressure cooker.

Finish 6th one race? Everyone's freaking out, what happened, why, chainstays to short?

Brake failure? Its analyzed like national security is on the line.

Once your on top things change. People won't be as stoked next year when Stevie finishes 4th. Much like Gwinn and Gee, he'll be expected to win and anything less will feel more and more like a letdown.
  • 4 0
yes as Stralov said the anger is mostly directed at himself, I'm a huge Gee fan and I was incredibly disappointed when I was watching his run so I can't imagine how pissed he is at himself for losing the overall like that, his whole run it looked like he couldn't really get going but either way he's still young
  • 4 0
Gee has all the right to be mad at himself. Has anyone here lost a race or series and and gone through the "could of would of's" in your head. I know I have.
  • 4 0
All true, if it was me I would have tried to put up a smiling face for cameras then go home and cry myself to sleep. Gee seems super intense but this is a super intense sport. I thought he was going to win since he treats it more like a athlete then a lot of other guys. We will see what the top field looks like next year. A lot can change in the off season.
  • 1 0
Not going to lie....would probably go home and cry myself to sleep till next season....but would try my hardest to put a smile on the podium. BTW thats just my opinion , I think I'm dumb!
  • 5 1
I'm not sure I understand this idea that the loser should put on a smile. Be gracious in defeat, congratulate the winner, stand on the podium etc, all things Gee did. but act happy to have just lost? why? where in the real world does this happen? In what other sport does this happen? does the losing team in the super bowl ever look happy? If a pitcher gives up a home run to lose a game does he walk off the mound smiling?
  • 3 2
Gee Atherton, how is he not a good sport? well for one they are friends of course he is going to be cool. i could dismiss a couple of pretty rude moments seeing him at whistler, but EVERYTIME i see him it is like he is soooooo put out, it makes it hard to ignore! they are paid to show support for the sport in which they get paid to do. that includes associating with fans on a decent levelFrown

This was a great final. I would love next season to truly see a wide open field. As good as this season was it was still dominated by one or two guys, much like the last few seasons. It was Gee early and Stevie late. It was basically down to just those two after round 4. Like the last 2 seasons were basically Minnar and Gwinn. I would love next season to see Gwinn and Minnar back on form, Hannah continues to ride well, maybe a few other guys like Bruni and Troy really step it up etc. Having 3 or 4, maybe even five guys still in the overall in the final races would be awesome.

Isn't it funny how fast things change these days in WC. The last 2 years Gwin has utterly dominated, and as a result been hated, then he has been no where near this year, and Stevie has stepped up and proven what we knew he was capable of. I'm super chuffed for Stevie but I hope to see Gwin back in the mix next year. And, yes I was one of the Gwin haters, because one continual winner is boring.. Next year is going to be awesome.. It's been a long time, if ever that there has been so many contenders who are capable of the win. Bring it on, and for god sake UCI sort this 5-6 races crap! We want to see a FULL season, 10+ Races!

I remember at the BDS in Innerleithen Wyn Masters was staying literally next to my Mate's house, and on the Saturday night he came around to borrow tools or something and ended up coming back around to his house for a beer later haha, such a sick guy!

I've been on the gee hater fan bus for a while now but give him a break on this one. He just handed over a world title. Any less of a man would be in tears. I'm impressed he can hold A straight face. Good on him fore congratulating Steve after the race
  • 1 0
I'm guessing you jumped on the Smith fan bus when Gwin turned out to be useless on a Demo!
  • 2 1
Iv been wanting Steve to win since he rode for cove. I was so psyched when he switched from evil to devinci cause I knew big things were gonna happen. And I wasn't disappointed. Gwin is a different game. I wish he were there to make his bid in the final round. He is a good racer. Gee is the main reason I fell in love with MTB. 2010 was the first year I actually followed the world cup closely and seeing his riding was really inspirational. I got a chance to congratulate him in person on a podium finish at the US open. Instead of just being cool, he took the chance to share a laugh with his mechanic about my broken helmet hanging from my bars that i couldn't afford to replace. I'm not a fan of gee no matter how talented and competitive he is. That being said. Gee had every right to not smile on the finals podium. If I were in his shoes I would be in tears I'm sure.
