Dan Atherton the creator of Red Bull Hardline takes us for a GoPro run of the track. Fast, Technical and with huge jumps is this the most intense downhill run ever?
Death tolls in mountainbiking would skyrocket! But I agree, the tracks should look a little bit more like this and a little bit less like Leogang. Next year is going to be sick though with two new tracks (Lourdes and Lenzerheide) and Val di Sole is back on the schedule again.
Well that's what i was going to say a proper DH track like in the good old time when the tracks ware killing hard and not for everyone for sure/ By the way @dudeism have you been to Leogang the bottom bit its kind of good proper DH for me Leogang Maribor Schladming are kind of proper DH tracks and they have a bit of everything and they are gnarly as well (love the rock-garden at Maribor)
Yes my internet connection is shite. That doesn't stop almost every other video sharing site working to a reasonable standard. YouTube is by far the worst.
Agreed, Wales is definitely THEE place to ride in the UK. So tired of Fort Bill. Don't get me wrong I love Fort William and it's great to have an hour and a bit down the road. However, The Welsh (with a few English builders) have taken riding so much further in recent years and deserve a little limelight.
Claudio comment will sound like: ouch ouch i nearly killed my self ouch here we go again uaauuuu that was a long flight oppps i missed the landing step up uaaaa i fetl too short
There's more to scotland than fort william you know. Wales does have some ace dh tracks though, better than alot of the marked ones in scotland. Shame caersws is no more
@turtlesauce2000 - I know dude, I live, ride and build in Scotland. But my comment was in relation to Kimbers comment "when is the WC coming to Wales?"
How many years has the World Cup gone to Fort William? A wee facelift in what, 2007? But the same old tired track. It's not going anywhere. So why not move the calendar around a bit? Hell, I'd like to see more of South America or Asia. It's supposed to be a World Cup.
And there's a lot more to british riding than scotland i.e. Wales... It's where it's been at for years now. Face lifts on cwmcarn, afan, new places like BPW, Ffestiniog, black mountain cycle centre.
I wish there were more places in Scotland, I really do. Until then, I'll just keep building my own :-)
The problem is nowhere in wales currently has the capacity to run the WC, fort william draws in about 20000 fans. It would be mad to try and host that in a welsh field.
If you could somehow teleport this track onto the nevis range hillside.... that would be rad.
I'll admit, there is no where else in the country that meets all the regs the UCI enforce. But that's not to say it could never happen. Simply needs investment. Believe it or not there was a time when the Nevis range didn't have a track.
My point is this merely highlights the incredible scene there is in Wales, which doesn't exist in Scotland. Don't get me wrong, they're are worse places to live and ride than Scotland. But it's not got the riding wales has.
Just giving props where props are deserved. Well done Dan, Rowan, Shawn and others that have really lifted the game in recent years.
Most MTB edits are usually filmed on clean, smooth and tidy bike park styled tracks. Yet here's Dan Atherton again, showing us if you have the determination and motivation to build your dream track then it can be done. This video along with the Quarry he sculpted in Wales for Four by Three are just steps ahead of so many other projects. I mean the guy even makes the World Cup tracks look like childs play compared to what he builds. What an inspiration.
They would obviously build ride arounds, and make some of those gaps less consequence, i don't think the tightness would matter too much. I think they should go for it.
Hutch, they can still push the limits of their sport on a course that is different from the men's since they have their own set of limits. The vast majority of women racers would need different (yet still challenging in their own way) lines or else it would hinder progression not promote it. I would see it similar to the Alpine FIS World Cup- women have different courses than the men and they are still able to push and progress their sport and varying disciplines.
Hutch, I agree that downhill is downhill, but 60+ foot gaps aren't for women. Having ridden with some of the top 10 WC women, they absolutely rip downhill, but sometimes they simply can't carry the speed required to hit such huge gaps. Women freeskiers have the same problem with the men's huge slopestyle jumps- the size of the jumps hinders their progression because they spend all their energy & effort on clearing the jump and can't be bothered to throw a proper trick. This is why alpine world cup has separate women's events- it's still hardcore downhill that would make any normal human shit their pants just tailored to the limits of the women. It is the absolute testament of their skills while still encouraging progression within the women's realm and abilities
It might be irrelevant, but i think that if a talented girl follows the same training regime from a young age, they could do almost the same as a man. the problem is that alot of women don't do that.
I guess this is where alpine skiing proves that this doesn't happen. Girls start at the same age and same regime as the boys and push & train just as hard, but they simply are smaller and lack the physical aspects that the guys have. Rachel Atherton and some of the other girls train just as hard as (or harder than) many of the guys, but they aren't at the same level as the men. They hit the same lines in a WC course, but the stuff here in this event even Danny Hart comes up short on.
Man, that track looks so incredibly gnarly, absolutely brutal! Is it just me or would you guys have also liked to see what that top section would have looked like with actual trees instead of just the stumps?
I think women could compete here. Of course, would have to be the most physically disciplined to clear those gaps. Fact is that women do possess the biological ability to match most men in the leg strength dept. It's upper body where they're roughly 40% weaker (all without juicing of course). Anyway it's certainly possible but maybe not so likely.
Wouldn't have been beautiful... just dark and gloomy 'pine'. Nothing like a true natural British deciduous woodland. There will be new trees planted there that grow crazy fast and prevent most of the natural wildlife thriving. Just part of the UK Forestry Commission. Almost all of our trail centres are on similar land
It's a love hate thing... I hate coniferous forests. Absolutely nothing natural or beautiful about those tree stumps in a perfect line. However, if deciduous woodland were to be restored, and I believe it should, this track would never exist. Or at least not in this incarnation.
The majority of heat in the uk is either central heating provided by gas, or electrical i.e. Nuclear/coal burning power stations. Paper is dying out, reminds me of 'The Office' episode where he gives a lecture on paper... "Now write this down"... Typing on laptop ensues.
It's actually the main reason why we have so many trail centres pop up in the UK in the last 10/15 years. Timber production is lagging and they need a new revenue... Mountain bikers...
There are many conservation projects in the UK to restore it's deciduous woodland. I personally am working for a charity called 'trees for life' restoring the Caledonian forest.
As said it's a love hate. Working forests are dying out but hopefully we the users of the countryside will be it's future.
Daily mail? That lot would concrete every inch of our island. Now it's those guardian reading mother f*ckers that would set up camp at my trails, because I'm moving dirt around. Anybody that doesn't use the countryside except when it's lovely and sunny and suits them can do one!
@pigman65 The felling at Afan is due to a tree disease. Unfortunately Cwmcarn is also due to be heavily felled for the same reason. On the plus side, they're replanting with more natural woodland apparently so in a decade or so the trails will be even better, or at least that is the hope.
Gaddam...........Dan "iz" the man!!!!!!!! Biulds a course like no other.... HMMMMM, can u say new worldcup track!!!!!!!!!!!!! Call it SUPER D GNAR!!!!! haha
someone said Afan is rubbish now its been felled, people that raced down stage 4 at the UKGE round will deffo disagree. because most of us hit one. Is this at Revolution bike park/Atherton's quarry
Agree it would make one of the best courses on the world championships but due to the location of the course it's never going to happen. Gutted as its in a beautiful place and arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Dan is the man! Genus track, didn't imagine you would ever find something that long in Wales. There is so much potential in this world when it comes to trail building.
4 mins Plus of hardcore riding Dan, that is insane!!! You are a well conditioned fine tuned machine, your bro and sis are too, just saying you deserve equal recognition.
Now we all know that,is realty this track looks even more technical, thru camera lens you lose some of real
magnitude of terrain, Dan is so good rider .
no worries dude, english is like riding-you only get better by practicing. i'm sure you speak english way better than i speak your native tongue. cheers!
not nearly enough stumps to catch your pedal on at the start.... its like a corn field but with trees...So is this at a trail centre somewhere? Hope so, hate to see all that trail work for a one off contest
hopefully it can be toned down a little for mere mortals so you can ride the area, looks like tons of room for more of the like. That's not normal Wales weather is it?
See how all the stumps were a dead straight line? It's a crop. They'll replant fast growing trees and in a few years there'll be another wood there again!
Am I the only one that thought that track looked pretty casual? Sure a few drops, jumps, and one big road gap, but I thought the term "Hard Line" meant just that. That trail is sick don't get me wrong, but it could be another world cup track. Why is it "hard line?" Not talking shit, just I guess not what I expected.
