Bas Van Steenbergen Dives Into the Goggle & Eyewear Space with His New 'RNDM Company'

PRESS RELEASE: RNDM / Ban Van Steenbergen

I have always dreamed of starting my own company within the mountain biking industry. A few years back, I began exploring the possibility of creating something, but I had no clear direction on what exactly to do. I had a file on my computer titled "Random Company," full of designs for various mountain biking gear and apparel. Over the years, it became increasingly clear that I was interested in the goggle and eyewear space. This "Random Company" document evolved into a goggle design sketchbook.

My fascination with goggles and eyewear stemmed partly from not having an eyewear sponsor for the last few years. This gave me the opportunity to try out nearly every goggle and set of riding glasses on the market. I knew I could make a significant contribution here, as I knew precisely what I was looking for in goggles and riding glasses, especially as someone who loves riding all disciplines—from Downhill bikes to BMX and anything in between. The idea of being able to offer a high-performing, yet stylish product while supporting fellow athletes truly inspired me to dive in.

This is my way of giving back to the mountain biking industry by creating a platform to support some incredible riders (and hopefully more to come soon!), and to invest in unique video projects that push the boundaries of mountain biking.

It's been a crazy learning experience starting a goggle and eyewear business, and I am so stoked to finally share the RNDM Company with you all!

Cool, not enough goggle options out there.

 Apparently not enough letters too.

 @chillrider199: Vowels cost money
  • 1 2
It's true there are plenty, however after years of trying I have fund only 1 brand that fits larger nose and FF properly but cannot find replacement clear lense to buy in europe, so for me, still a room for improvement. But this one will not do it. I have a feeling that every brand just takes moto goggles and call it a day, well, this may work for lift assisted riding, but not when you put them on after long climb and this sh*t foggs immediately, no matter how well anti-fog treated it is from factory, there are no double clears lens options and most models push your FF helmet up.

@chillrider199: RNDM x CNYN CLLCTV collab dropping soon

@DizzyNinja: Can I buy an A and an O please?

I like the product but would probably pass based on the branding. Why not Ray-Vans? Or Bas Van Specs?
  • 14 2
A real missed opportunity, where were you when we were coming up with names?!
  • 22 0
@RNDMcompany: Well I am always available for marketing consults. My rate is reasonable bc I’m a relatively new unknown agency. Oddly enough we are named after a folder on my desktop. Hmu at info@notporn.com
  • 1 0
@RNDMcompany: ray-Vans could be a model name, that way its easier to change when a cease and de-sist order comes through

Bas I salute you. What an accomplishment. Nailed the styling. Reasonable MSRP. Founded by a real biker. Fantastic!

 Thank you!!
  • 4 0
@RNDMcompany: Yeah, can you get into the ski/board goggle game? Smith charging about 400CAD for goggles hurts my soul.
  • 6 2
@jesse-effing-edwards: not to mention the Smith rep for BC is kind of a tool.
  • 1 0
 @Superboost: haha, well I supposes there's that.
  • 1 0
@jesse-effing-edwards: and don’t forget the part where your new I/O Mags fog up inside the lens the second time you use them.
  • 2 1
@jesse-effing-edwards: we'd love to! hopefully in a few years time!
  • 2 0
@Nobble: oh, I find the pricing of their glasses even more absurd than the goggles. Almost the same price asfull goggle frame, for something I might mash into the dirt!

I honestly don’t get all the hate on this. The product looks rad to me and has well thought out design and features. Add that no one commenting has tried ANYTHING from the company, yet they are incredibly confident in trashing it. Besides, Bas is semi legendary here on PinkBike… sheesh guys, aren’t there other people/companies more deserving of your hate and suspicion you can spend your time on?
  • 1 0
@ShopMechanic: Who's hating RNDM? Some smith trash talk, but sounds like enthusiasm all around for these new products. Look good, great price.
  • 1 0
@jesse-effing-edwards: it’s no one in this thread, but further down in the comment section. I don’t know why my comment ended up here. It should have been down at the bottom.

Bas isn't like other girls, he's so RNDM

Coming soon: TTLL TBLR DD, GGGL CMPN
  • 15 3
If these are ever available on amazon, I might confuse this company with cheap Chinese companies with similar looking names.
  • 21 2
Probably come from the same molds…
  • 4 0
 They're likely the same thing.
  • 1 3
@nickfranko: They are literally the same thing - not much searching on Aliexpress will return the same things.
  • 1 0
@motardnoob: what would i have to search for, if i wanted to be 100% sure i wasnt buying counterfeit goods?
  • 12 3
Needs RX insert compatibility. Glasses more expensive than Goodr is a tough sell.
  • 9 2
 They are!
  • 1 1
@RNDMcompany: Why not include it in the press release?
  • 2 0
@therealmancub: They're mentioned as "optional" under the Product Details.
  • 3 1
@therealmancub: Why not read the press release?
  • 1 0
@loamhunter78: To be fair, I didn't see it either when I looked over it - and I was specifically looking. AND its only the sunglasses, not the goggles. At least as far as the website and press release currently state.
  • 2 0
Can confirm the goggles have over the glasses notches and fit comfortably with them in there.
  • 1 0
Are you unable to wear contacts? I avoided contacts for years, but acuvue dailys were a game changer.
  • 10 0
Congrats Bas! Nice to see more brands being founded by riders.
  • 8 3
One of the main reasons we see so many eyewear companies , is that the margins are insane. Markup on eyewear makes this probably the best business opportunity in mountain biking. Pay $75 & throw away as much plastic per year as you'd like ! nothing like RNDM microplastics showing up in my food !
  • 5 0
Looks good! Consider a photochromic lens for the Flow. I've used Adidas and Julbo photochromic glasses and love them. Otherwise I like lenses in the 35% VLT range for mtb, like Oakley's Prizm Trail lens.
  • 3 1
We've looked into the photochromic lenses a bunch and are still working on them, we have some low light lenses on the way as well!
  • 2 1
@RNDMcompany: Clear. You got what matters. I hate photochromic. Was trying to ride in Squamish today and couldn't see in the green room because the roads and cut blocks make my Smiths too dark. Is that not a thing elsewhere?
  • 2 0
@s100: ? I use Smith Photochromic almost all the time, including finishing rides in the dark (with lights). I do not have that problem at all.
  • 1 0
@flipfantasia: maybe I’m just too old then

Finally a natural sponsor for the CNYN CLLCTV
  • 5 0
this is epic Bas, congrats man, So good to see you taking things into your own hands
  • 6 0
These look awesome, nicely done Bas!
  • 4 0
Stoked on the performance and aesthetics of this stuff after coming off the last 10 years with Smith. Nice to be able to support an athlete venture! Keep it up!
  • 5 0
The replacement lense subscription is a great idea or perhaps just sell replacement lenses at reconstruct.
  • 6 2
I don't have an eyewear sponsor either. Maybe I should just start a company to solve that issue.....
  • 6 2
well, then head over to alibaba, and get the same ones as bas. so you can be rndm as any other.
  • 5 3
@dcdavid12: Saying it's literally the same when a quick glance shows that they're clearly different products is an interesting take. You're also comparing a USD price for a bulk buy to a CAD price for single product, the link you shared is $32 CAD per piece with a 2 piece minimum. Still a big difference but not the same as you've framed it. I've only bought knock off glasses recently on account of major brands being insanely expensive, and can honestly say I've swung and missed more times than I've gotten good ones (nose pieces suck, lenses funnel air into your eyes, ear bumpers fall off etc). Of course there are cheaper options, but buying a product that a long time pro and good person is getting off the ground gives you some assurance that the prototypes worked through any kinks. They're also significantly cheaper than comparable options from Smith/Oakley/100%, so it's nice to see someone finding a middle ground and giving riders more options, nice one Bas!
  • 3 0
@dcdavid12: maybe Bas could sponsor you some prescription eyewear because it seems you need it, the lens shape isn't even close?
  • 1 0
@NikBNZ: Yup... I agree. The similarities caused me to stop from looking closely, but obviously different. Eating my words on this one.
  • 1 0
@dpeacock: Yeah I made too hasty of a comparison here. For sure different glasses than the ones I posted.
  • 3 0
Please make goggles that can replace the foam and strap. It's totally wasteful and silly to chuck the goggle when these things can't be replaced.
  • 1 0
Wishing the best for BAs and this business venture.

Other than supporting him and the clean appearance, I struggle to see any standout features or value, making it just another goggle/glasses option.

I think if I was in the market I would either prioritize
Price:
Fog proof/dual pane
Photocramatic
Magnetic lens'
Hydrophobic coatings

Thanks! and yes those are all things I am looking into as we speak, but as I am starting up with no outside investment, I have to start somewhere! Also, with the way the bottom of the goggles are vented they do an amazing job not fogging up.
  • 7 0
@RNDMcompany: Hey Bas? Dude if this is all you an no outside investment, thats worth promoting. that kind of takes the supporting riders level up a notch to know that your investment and your profits are not shared with someone else.

Take every gotcha comment from this thread and all of your answers and consider how you can amplify those answers in your marketing, sometimes your footnotes are other peoples hardlines.

I know that starting a business is hard, marketing, websites, pictures, and goddarned SEO all such when you just want to be product focused. You made it here so you are doing great.

Oh and if you make z87 people construction workers will buy them.

@way2manyhobbies2keep: Really appreciate that comment!! it's certainly been a mission so far haha.
and again, thanks for the feedback/insight! - Bas

Why so many people starting brands are beginning with goggles? Are goggles the easiest thing to produce? Is the demand for goggles that high? And why the hell we are seeing a product presentation without any color in it. What I see now is new product that I don't even know how it looks like.

BST ND FVRT GGGL CMPNY YT!
  • 4 1
Everyone here is only talking about the optics, what about the insane video he dropped....? You're a menace Bas
  • 1 0
@rndmcompany what is the width of your glasses? There is a need for more options for the fat heads like me. Something in the same size range as the 100% Glendale, but better looking
  • 1 0
I’m curious what people with prescription glasses do: skip goggles and just wear glasses, use contact lenses and goggles, or something else?
  • 5 0
I use contact lenses but I have used prescription riding glasses too. Most actual riding glasses are too curved for strong prescriptions but my prescription isn’t strong. "Street" eye wear is usually too low at the top and you’ll be looking over the top when you’re low on the bike. Inserts are similarly too small and low. And of course when the lenses fog or get too wet and muddy to see through you can’t take them off because now you’re blind. Contacts or maybe corrective surgery are the best options but not for everybody.
  • 2 0
I typically skip goggles and wear Rx safety glasses. But I'm only in the bike park once or twice a year. Would figure out a goggle solution if it was more often.
  • 1 0
There's a company out there that makes rx lense dealeo that fit into googles(behind the Goggle lense)
  • 3 0
@RNDMcompany will you have these in stores (like skyride in vernon Wink ?
  • 3 2
Haha, Skyride may have received some already! hoping to have them in more stores soon!

 Nice work Bas! Looking sick.
