Ok, I will just post this to start so there is no confusion here. This is in no way shopped. This was taken as one exposure at 25 seconds at IOS 2500. There were three flashes used in this shot. The shot was done in two different stages. First stage is to flash the inside of the cave/arch with two flashes with gels on the flash to give it a orange effect. the rider was not in the shot yet. Second was to have the lens covered after the first set of flashes went off and have the rider come onto the arch. as he was about to get to our marked spot to pop the second set of flash, I uncovered the lens and the flash was fired and then covered up as to not get any ghosting effect due to a small head lamp Carston was using to see where she was riding. All this was done with a cable release and was shut off after the rider was out of frame and all lights were off. Here is a link on more info. blog.pocketwizard.com/?p=4257
After two years of watching PB POD this is the first time I've seen a photo so stunning I had to comment. Incredible work man. Major respect for your creativity.
Will some one please explain to me what happened to the photo that was pod this morning haha? If you all didn't see it, it was the first picture posted on pinkbike, from 2004.
SO the 25 second exposure was for the rock and the rider and sky had something faster like 1/100th maybe? No star blur so figured was faster shutter speed. Looks killer non the less!
Definitely one of the best PODs I have ever seen..Quality shot, lighting, scenery, everything about it is bang on..
..and in a mad, tripped out way it does look a bit like Wile.E Coyote he's riding over!! Haha
Steve, this is an incredible picture! Well thought out, beautifully executed... Bravo!! There is still a future for photographic art, and you've created a page in the book!!! Congrats on your POD!!
I'm truly bummed this didn't make it to the finals of POY, and win. I shoot sports photography for fun, and I can appreciate what goes in to a great action shot, catching a big whip at just the right moment, so I'm NOT knocking the shot that will most likely win POY. But, what was done to create this shot, just for fun and not for commercial hire, is way beyond all other photos in the contest. If I was in my 20's, instead of in my 40's, I'd probably vote differently, but I just wanted to let Steve know that this is THE BEST example of "photographic art" on PinkBike.
Hylands gives us no low down on this shot? Probably one of the coolest pics to date, and he's got nothin' to say?! I usually enjoy reading his input on the POD.
super sick shot and amazing lighting work. I know how hard it can be to light riders at night while controlling all those factors and steve really nailed it on this one. major props!!
to shit on everyones parade, U R not allowed to ride that arch in this National Park US, just saying, have a nice day, by the way the illegal ones are always the BEST ones, they have a negative effect on our sport, i don't share those ones,
Arches National Park has a riding prohibition. Arches outside the national park - eg in Poison Spider Mesa or in Escalante are legal to ride but props for making a good point
Be nice Wilkey, you're a buddy of Lance's right?, he's just ignorant and doesnt' realize that there are nearly as many arches outside of Arches NP as in it......
Trailstar2danman, You are correct that arches in the National park are off limits, however this arch is not in arches and is on BLM land. It is legal to ride on this arch and many others on BLM land.
This pic would have made jim morrison a mtn biker. “I believe in a long, prolonged, derangement of the senses in order to obtain the unknown.” ― Jim Morrison
Who took this? I think you need a larger water mark!! For such a creative shot I'm dumbfounded why you would stick a bright white signature in such a crap font so large on it.
