The Subaru BRAT was released in 1978 and was an instant hit for those looking to get after it in the woods. Around the same time you'd find some Klunkers doing laps in the hills of NorCal. This is a pretty iconic little rig.
SRAM went with a Western theme for one of their displays here at the Otter. Clockwise from the lower left corner: Guide Ultimate brakes, Pike 650 with Boost 110 (160mm, SOLO Air), 15x110 and 12x148 hubs, Direct Mount X-Sync Narrow/Wide rings, GX 2X Cranks, Guide Ultimates, GX 1X Cranks and the beautiful RS-1 fork (now available in both 29 and 650).
Today was the Enduro here at the Sea Otter Classic and Mitch was ready to do battle, spandex and all. Mitch ran a mostly stock Camber Evo 29er, with the only changes being made light wheels (Traverse SL Carbon) and swapping to his Renthal bar and stem. He'd finish 2nd on the day.
While Mike Levy is bringing you all the fresh MTB goods from Fox Racing Shox, I just want to remind everyone that Fox also makes some of the best offroad truck dampers in the world. This project truck with RPG Offroad was looking ready for shuttle action.
Trek is giving away these two custom Fuel EX Jr. bikes. Stay tuned to learn how you could take one of them home.
This is the Black Jack from Durango Bike Company. It's a 29er frame that is currently shod with a 650B + wheel set up. The rear end is set to 120mm of travel via a modified Horst Linkage. The entire frame is made in the USA, from the tubes, billeting and even the rear axle on the 148mm hub. You'll find over sized Enduro brand bearings at all the pivots too. Add in the 16.7" seat stays, 67.5 degree head angle and this bike is made to last and to really get the most out of your trail riding experience.
The all new 100% SpeedCraft glasses are made for action sports like mountain biking with their wrap around lens that sits just far enough off your face to reduce fogging under hard efforts. Speaking of lenses, there are 14 different lens colour options (all in regular or short sizes) and 6 frame colours, so no matter what your kit looks like you'll be able to match it up and look fast on the trail.
The SpeedCraft starts at $179USD and goes up from there depending on lens options from those options listed above.

Here is the 5 bucks a foot info direct from the source - Ibis and the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship work crew is itching to get stuck into some major work. For 2015, with the advent of positive changes at the USFS on the Downieville side of the hill, we are pleased to report a renewed focus on our touchstone trails. Up for grabs this time around is a very finely appointed Ibis bike of your choosing, valued at over 10,000 dollars. Ibis has very generously donated this bike to the cause, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to this. Now we need your help. Fund a foot of trail rehab for 5 bucks, and you gain a chance at owning this fine Ibis. Every 5 bucks you spend increases your odds of winning this bike, and at the same time helps underwrite one of our more ambitious trail projects ever. So don't be shy. Throw some money at trails that you know and love, and that are in sore need of your help. Tell your friends about this, get them involved as well. Downieville is one of the great mountain bike riding destinations in the world, offering rowdy, World Class single track at its finest, and it's time we showed those trails our appreciation.
Mitch's Specialized teammate Curtis Keene is also on a Camber 29er, although his S-WORKS is quite modded out for today's big race. Keene is running the EVO link to drop the BB height and slacken out the head angle for starters. Fat Traverse Carbon wheels are shod in Control casing tires - 2.3 Purgatory up front and the 2.3 Renegade out back. Curtis is running a 36T front ring to really get his bike moving here at the Sea Otter Classic. He's also rocking the full Ruckus kit from TLD as he's more modest than his teammate Mitch.
It's been a pretty exciting year in North America with the introduction of YT Industries to the cycling market. YT operates on a buyer direct sales model and it's helping to shape how consumers buy their next bikes. The model shown here is the Capra CF with a BOS Deville fork and BOS Kirk rear shock. That's a wrap for day one. We left Mike Levy in the bubble pool, but we'll be sure to get him for Day 2, so stay tuned.
i was driving down the street and saw 3 kids about 12 or 13 riding bicycles on the sidewalk and when i saw the middle kid was on a santa cruz bronson i almost shit a brick.
XTR on a kids bike is ridiculous indeed. I think XTR is ridiculous for at least 95% of it's users.... Most bikers think below XT, the components are not even worth considering, though they function perfectly fine. We are such a decadent society.
I just moved to Luxembourg from Seattle, and it's amazing how many young kids you see here riding S-Works road and mtn bikes. Some people just have too much money I guess.
I saw these these rich people in the developed world having cars and houses and hated on them for it, hard.
Lay off guys. For one there are actually a lot of kids in the size bracket of those bikes who shred better than all of you. Plus once it is out there it eventually becomes used great for all the rest of us.
i'll never understand why someone would give any fks about what someone else may have on whatever ride. asshats trickle down every mfgs component groups' line.
maybee the kid on a bronson knows how to ride and needs it .... i cracked a foes dhs mono when i was 12 , and cracked a turner dhr frame in december "15" dont be sad kids have nice bikes , i bought all my own shit , you can too
I would have loved a bike like that as a kid as a kid (though cringe at how I would have abused those components). Though, my Dad bought me a Gary Fisher that was pretty hot shiz at the time. Problem was, because my Dad was really frugal, he bought a 19" frame when I was 11 with the economic thinking that I now had a good bike it should last... forever! I would have to find the highest curb, throw a leg over the frame, push off the curb and then try to lift onto the slammed seat while slowly wobbling away from the curb. I still have that bike complete with answer forks. It's relegated to the wall though now. So no hate from me on kids. Lucky little buggers, I just hope they enjoy them. Far rather see a kid on a bike more expensive than mine than a pale kid avoiding the world via video games, smart phones and the over anxious parenting that pervades.
Wow !! those are some nice kids bikes. The companies are giving parents great ideas. Get your kids on the trails early. Thanks to TREK for doing this. If we mastered the bike the first time we rode one then we'd probably lose interest. It takes a lifetime to fully appreciate the happiness and fullness of life two wheels offers and getting the next generation to start a little sooner is something we can all appreciate.
Haha true but you never know! Hell im 15 now and ive mowed lawns and shit worked my ass off for every bike ive owned...
Specialized stumoy sworks, santacruz nomad, and now a knolly warden. Its a lot of saving but you could buy a bike mowing lawns and other side jobs.
There's a kid I always see around on a Cannondale Trigger Carbon Black , $10k bike for a 10 year old kid, but goddamn it that kid is fast! He deserves XTR a whole lot more than I do.
What's the problem with 26" wheels on a kid's bike if it fits? Better rollover than a 24" right? Sounds like this one must have a nice low standover to fit a 4'4" kid... saying a kid shouldn't have 26" wheels is like saying a mid sized adult shouldn't be on a 29er....
Local racer here to me is age 13, riding a $8000 full suspension and it's not a parents bike it's theirs. But the family has rediculous amounts of money to spend, it would be like me going out and buying a $100 bike if that.
Remember the Bike industry isn't about how much skill you have any more it's about how deep your pockets are to afford the cool new stuff so you can be the new kool kid on the scene.
yeah, bike racing does take a bit of money to get into. you need a quality bike, suspension set up that will actually handle the track, solid drivetrain that won't keep you back, and brakes, because in a race you don't want to cruise to slow down, you need to pin the gas and slam brakes and repeat.
I can't get into racing, i have a frikin college tuition to pay. not just that but it takes a lot of time, not all parents can spend their whole weekend going over to trails and letting their kid race.
@Alias530 - Its not the kids fault, and you don't even know if they're brats. With a comment like yours, I could assume things just like you and think you're a typical jerk-off.
And that's a Rhythm Pro Carbon wheelset... That's crazy, but I guess that's what you can do when you work for a bike manufacture and get anything you want for a fraction of the retail price if not free. I guess I would spec out mine and my kid's bikes like this too if I would work there.... why not?... just for giggles...
@prestonDH of course it isn't his fault. What kid would be like "no, I don't want something cool, I want something shitty".
That doesn't make him any less of a spoiled brat. Same thing as the kids in high school with new BMW's @ age 16.
Call me jealous if you want but you'd be wrong... I can afford all of that NOW, but I wasn't GIVEN it as a kid and it made me less shitty of an adult as a result.
I came back in here specifically to give @Alias530 positive votes for that last sentence.
I can't wait until cycle racing for kids starts going the way of all the other sports are doing....no winner/losers, imagine trying to sort that out at a bike race where no one wins. No one is timed, no one podiums. AND no one puts the effort in to be better at the next race since there is no "better"
Spoiled is a personality thing. You don't have to be spoiled by having it good. It is just really hard not to be. We probably all think we are entitled to indoor plumbing. Some would see that as spoiled. Having a good bike is a "must" for me. I am spoiled in that sense.
@snl1200 I hear you! We have a famous family quote. My mum overheard a sales guy in the bike shop talking about my dad. "There's a bloke over there trying to buy a bike THIS BIG for a kid this big." I just bought a 24"wheel bike for my six year old daughter. My wife said it's too big. I told her I know, it's a family tradition. I want it to last until she's old enough to buy her own bike.
I had a Cannondale F2000 when I was 16 that I bought myself. I would generalise that most of the best athletes were born into poor families and worked their butts off to make it but it doesn't really ring true. Pacman... dirt poor. Mayweather... born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Maradona... dirt poor. Messi... born with a silver spoon in his mouth (kind of). Hamilton... dirt poor. Rosberg... born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Being poor teaches some people to work hard but it teaches some people how to steal or live off benefits. One thing's for sure, I want to give my son everything that I didn't have growing up. I'm confident he's not going to turn into an arsehole
@jfkusa Couldn't agree more buddy. My first decent bike was a '96 M2 Stumpy hardtail, was about 18, worked my balls off at a supermarket for that bike. Cost something like $3k, when my gross weekly wage was $600. Fukn loved that bike, thrashed the crap out of it, got stolen, got it back from the cops, rebuilt it with full XTR and White Bros triple clamps (shit seals), got stolen again... I'll never forget it, still miss it now.
damn what grocery store paid you 600$ a week at 18? i bought all my bikes and im 24, the highest paying job ive had yet is still only 12$-hr. yes its taken me a long time and its hard to afford maintenance like damper services and wheel builds but i wouldnt spend my money anywhere else.
At risk of sounding like a dick...I used to be flat broke and scrape money together for gear and as a kid always got used bikes as presents which I was thrilled with. Now my wife and I work, have three kids and plenty of disposable income most of which we spend on mtb and ski gear plus holidays to do both. So for me (and I'm guessing a lot of older readers in my position) the idea of getting my kids some killer gear to match the rides my wife and I have makes perfect sense. Also, before anyone accuses me of throwing money around there are two good reasons to buy top notch kids gear: 1. If you have more than one kid decent gear will last for all of them so buying one good bike will be cheaper than two or three cheap ones. Same goes for armour, clothes etc... 2. The resale on kids bikes is a lot higher than adult bikes. I've sold bikes that have gone through all three kids for 50-75% of what I paid. I'm not really sure why this is but I think even people with money get hung up of a $100 increment on a kids bike but will happily buy themselves dinner out which costs more. I'm a bit late to comment on this but I really like that Lil Shredder, Spawn, Commencal, Spec and now Trek to name a few make some really awesome kids rides. OK....let the abuse begin!
If by abuse you mean calling you a smart man. Our Cleary bikes will take the current twinss through about another year, then the next 2 through a couple years each. We will probably sell one of them.
@whitebullit I'm in Australia, our min wage for retail is about $18 ph, plus penalties for shift work, ie. time and a half, double time. I'm in construction now, machine operator, make $47 ph plus penalties, site allowance, travel allowance, lunch provided, living away from home allowance, superannuation, holiday pay, etc, etc. Join a union mate, united we stand.
I spent two years in Aussie and I met a shit ton of people who were earning ten bucks an hour. 47 Aussie must be 40 American. Last year it would have been 50.
In relation to minimum wage I mean... if people making minimum wage earn 18, 47 isn't that great. If people are making 8, then 47 sounds pretty good.
( 8 / 18 ) x 47 = 20.88
That's why it's absurd that the lower class is pushing for a $15/hr minimum wage right now. Everyone who makes more than $15/hr currently will effectively experience a pay cut.
Talking about PAy in North America makes my blood boil. Asking for hand outs makes my blood boil. How do European countries manage to make it work with 33hr work weeks 6 weeks vacation and a min wage at $20/hr? Dis I mention the free university and amazing social programs?
NA needs to get their heads out of the oil soup and start closing the wage gap from the 1% to the rest of us, or you really will see a poverty rate increase to astonomical levels. It's already become the dissapearing middle class thats getting hurt the worst.
[Start = Rant] As long as there is greed in the world there will always be a fight between the low income and the middle class. Reason I left out the upper class is they just use their money to keep the middle and low income classes fighting amongst themselves and manage to continue to profit on their backs.
I personally think we should tax coprorations at a higher degree and lower personal taxes. Add in a luxcury tax on certain goods and add in a fat tax. remove all taxes from direct to consumer goods(ie farmer/manufacturer) and try a DIFFERENT way of taxation.....however; that would involve a DRASTIC change in the current political climate and there isn't a single politician in North America that has the balls to even hint at a change like that since we all know that Corporations fund politicians where the peopls just vote for who they want.
I am 15 and saved up $3000 through a part time job to buy a Giant Trance SX from the local bike shop. I have an amazing bike, parts that suit me, and I am in no mind to unnecessarily replace the Deore brakes with XTR, X0 or Sram Guide RSC. (Even though I would not mind if someone put them on my bike for free). In the enduro races I ride I place top 3 in U15s or U17s (depending on the person who is running the event.)
I am not contradicting anyone, but I think everyone should just be appreciative of the bike they have.
I started on a 20 year old Giant ATX Hard tail with 450mm bars V-brakes and gears that didnt shift. I took this on black diamond DH runs and 20 foots gaps.
I still have it but the rear wheel is buckled beyond belief.
I would still love riding just as much now if I still had my ATX.
And you guys should join the debate club again, seriously!
I spoke with Howie last night. Says that at 6'1" the Capra in large fits him. I'm about the same size, and thinking about pulling the trigger. Anyone outside the US around this height (~185cm) care to opine?!?!
I am 6' 1" and weigh 220lb and have been riding a large since early March. It feels bigger than my Demo 8. Had a friend who is 6'3" sit on it and he liked the fit better than his XL Mojo HD
Thanks whistlerdemo - I'm replacing a recently stolen Enduro 29, and the only concern I had on the geometry difference is the Capra's stack is about 40mm less than the Enduro. As most of my 6'1" is in my legs, I'm worried about sitting like a triathlete while climbing!!
The Capra is at the top of my replacement list... along with another Enduro, Bronson, SB6C, and the Mach 6. YT just provides so much value... I have a Tues and the ride/build quality is very good.
Commencal Meta AM V4 for the win.... half the price of the YT and I ADORE mine (ex-Orange and Nomad-C rider). Honestly, I'm a reborn MTBer thanks to this bike.
Yonibois - where on earth is a commencal half the price of a Capra AL? The meta AM essential plus is £50 more than the Capra, has no reverb, the pike is the rc rather than the rct3 and is SRAM x9 1x10 where as the Capra is SRAM X1 1x11 - basically the YT is cheaper and has far better kit.
I love what YT is doing but I can't bring myself to buy a bike without a water bottle holder. Riding with a backpack on every ride sucks. When it comes to this level of greatness on a bike (all of the major companies are competitive these days) it's the small things that close the deal for me.
the tuesday has spot on geo in large carbon(24.5tt/17.7rch), but the capra c large- smaller reach/tt tues and nomad, and sc are known for running short/tight.
the baja was only around for 4 years though (2002-2006), and wasn't really as cool or as iconic as the brat. It was designed with that crappy early 2000's style of "the future is now" kind of mindset. I don't think the baja was a worthy reincarnation of the brat. Also Subaru never came out and said that the baja was supposed to pay homage to the the brat or anything like that.
Who on earth would want a deformed El Camino. I think they did things all wrong with the Baja. Everything wrong with that car is right in the Crosstrek (minus the Orange).
I'm amazed the aussies haven't commented here yet. When I lived over there I was blown away by their love of the cruck ("ute"). Holden utes were the Tacoma of the places I lived. No where near as cool as the Brat though. IMO
Suspension setup. Higher in front than in back. Thought it was just platics but u r right it is a raptor. I don't get that build at all now haha @only1mikey
@makripper what's to not get? It's a fully capable full size 4x4 truck with all the creature comforts of a brand new fully loaded truck. As for the shock debate Kings, Fox, Swayaways, Radflo, Bilsteins, Elka BS, it's exactly the same this as Fox, BOS, Rockshox, XFusion, Manitou forks, pick one and be a di** about it apparently.
Thank you! Someone who knows what a pre-runner is. The raptor is a great from factory off road truck but not a pre runner like it appears to be set up as. That's all I'm saying. Not trolling.
The purpose of a prerunner is to reliably and comfortably PRERUN an offroad race course at a high speed. Yes, 4wd is heavier, and yes it's more expensive. But it has its purpose there. A prerunner is not inherently 2wd, that's all I want to get across.
That truck is badass. Don't care if it's 2wd or 4wd. @makripper FYI I'll admit 2wd may have sparked it with the VW Bajas but 4wd caught up and all the engineering firms building fabricated long travel kits cater to both 2wd and 4wd models equally now. Short Course and SCORE have plenty of 4wd classes and take a look at JeepSpeed. Saying Prerunners are only 2wd is like saying Mountain Biking can only be done on a 40lbs 8" travel DH bike, which we all know isn't the case. Ironically enough I just sold a 2wd Camburg fitted Mazda Ranger lol. Run what you brung.
I am a huge fan of Mitch Ropelato, he has this genuine "Raaaad" written all over his face Quite often, he attaches that face to a 29" trail bike riding among full on DH rigs and then, even though he doesn't mean it, that face seems to sing to online warriors:
I am riding a 29eeeeeer, faster than youuuu, faster than mooooost of those blokes over here, a 29eeeer cha cha cha, a 29eeeer cha cha cha, and I can whip iiiiiit, whip iiiiiiiiiiiiiiit goooooood. I can whip cha cha cha I can scruuuub cha cha cha More than, more than, more than youuuu cha cha cha, more than him cha cha cha, and more than 90% of sponsored riders on this hill, cha cha cha There's nothing wrong with the track, I knew you wanted treat it like that, it's it's it's it's its' aaaaaa: 29eeeer, not even a 275
I think the $5 a foot contest is awesome. Definitely going to show that to the local club to see if something similar could be done here. Probably wouldn't be a $10,000 bike up for grabs, but a generous LBS might donate a $1500 bike, and if at least that much is raised we could finally get some signage at the local trail system. Better navigation = more riders = more bike sales for the LBS.
Any idea how much it costs Sierra Buttes to contract trail builders per mile or per day?
Their 2.0s are basically the same as Bilstein 5100s but their 2.5s and 3s are fucking awesome. The rear end on the raptor has 3s on either side and they were awesome.
Wiki - The Subaru BRAT (an acronym for Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter) is a coupé utility version of the Subaru Leone,[1] built from the late 1970s into the early 1990s. Developed in Japan during 1977 at the request of the President of Subaru of America, the BRAT was designed on the basis of the company's four-wheel drive "Leone" station wagon.[2] It was first introduced in 1977 for the 1978 model year and followed the concept of the Chevrolet El Camino and the Ford Ranchero.
Oakley also make some extremely fugly shades. Plus this could be used by riders using a half face helmet. More convenient than no goggles and definitely less birth-control-y than the awful open face + goggles combo.
100% or PB missed the boat with the pictures. Those neon two tone colorways are not everyone's cup of tea. I went straight to 100%'s website and they have the glasses in gunmetal or black with smoke lenses and it changed everything. Maybe I'm a Johnny Cash kind of guy but I prefer neutral colorways and will majority of the time choose black, grey, or white before red, green, or blue unless the build or kit is color matched across the board. @fabdemaere I agree with you about Oakley, not my style and I like my Spys. My bro-in-law likes Oakleys but they fit his personality and style. A market full of choices is a beautiful thing.
My lady would definitely laugh at me if I jumped in bed wearing those shades but she wouldn't say no, giggity giggity. As for single guys, if you were satirical about the shades and the girl liked a sense of humor it could be done...maybe
