Results: eMTB XC - Glentress XC World Champs 2023

The results are in from the 2023 eMTB XC World Championships at Glentress. Joris Ryf takes the Men's title with 21 seconds back to Hugo Pigeon. Jerome Gilloux takes home the bronze medal and is the only other rider within two minutes of the winner. For the Women Nathalie Schneitter dominates the race with a minute back to silver medalist Sofia Wiedenroth and another 34 seconds to Justine Tonso.

 They should make a new rule. You ride 4 laps in ebike mode and then make them turn the bikes off and they have to pedal the same bike for 2 laps.

 Yep, and somebody born in 1979 came in the top ten. Actually I think that's pretty cool - the motor levels the playing field. Skill and experience get their feet in the door. Look at it this way - having a youthful body is kinda cheating. You'll probably start agreeing with me as the years slip by.

 @tigerfish50: Skill and experience already HAVE their feet in the door, just not as the all-deciding factors. And that's how it should be. XC racing is not a speed trial contest, it's not about who has the best technique, it's about who has the best combination of skills; endurance, riding technique, tactical intelligence, etc.
The very last thing you should want is to 'level out' one or more of those factors.

 They're not even any faster than most of the world cup level XC men, to put it in perspective. The fastest lap in yesterday's XC Relay event was 9:34 (Nino did a 9:50). The fastest average lap for this event was ~9:45. What I'm saying is that not only is this super stupid and promotes e-waste, it's also super pointless and doesn't showcase any extra speed or flair like throwing a 250cc dirt bike on course would.

 Someone already suggested, long ago, that the eMTB race should simply reuse the DH track, only in reverse. Get on it UCI.

 Heard someone with a Shimano EP8 was winning after lap 1.
They didn't make it to the end though, the motor went into limp mode.
Shimano said it was the first time they had heard of an EP8 motor having an issue and will do a "repair".

 Hugo Pigeon won this year's Megavalanche - thanks to Damien Oton's puncture - so he can certainly hit the features and motor without a motor.

 To be honest, and not intending to body shame her, she didn't look the fittest of the bunch. It is one thing to have a motor, but the difference between the riders is still done mostly in the climbs rather than the downhills, by providing extra power over what the engine already provides.

 i'm sure there was a universal test after the race to make sure everyone was using the same motor and gearing and such right???!!??? right? like nascar right?

 While not spec motors, there are limitations.... 250 watt motor, pedal assist to 25km/hr only, and start up assistance of 6km/hr.

As for checks....

* Pre-race scrutineering... mechanical check. engine diagnostic. Rear wheel rollout (incl spare wheels). Tuning kit search. Then bikes and wheels are marked/stickered
* At call-up.....sticker check. And bikes have to be switched off, and re-booted under commissaire supervision
* End of race.... top 5 bikes re-checked. Plus any bikes "flagged" during the race (tech officials with speed gun on course)

 @Cabin: Yes bikes are checked and it still a "fitness contest" where the major difference is done in the climbs where the riders provide the additionnal power.

 @Cabin: 250W CONTINUOS power motor.

That means you can run the motor forever at 250W and it won't overheat. It's a minimum rating, not a limit on the power output.

Max power and max torque are not limited.

The only limitation is the cut off speed.

Just typing out what was in the UCI tech guide for event. Basically making the point that there are spec limitations. There's pretty stringent checks. And the limitations are such that while equipment is important, it does indeed come down to who can pedal/pilot the bikes around the course the best

And why previous winners have been the likes of Alan Hatherly and Tom Pidcock

 @opignonlibre: Having spoken with a few elite XCO athletes who have given it a crack (I haven't)... also some serious physical demands in how much more "beaten up" athletes can feel compared to regular XCO, due to how much more pace and force they are hitting obstacles with on both undulating sections, and climbs (compared to regular bike)

 @Cabin: I've no doubt it could be a good, fair sport. Not only that, it could be a good tool for manufacturers to help them develop better motors.

If I was designing the rules I'd have them fit a power meter to the battery and tell them there is a max peak power that is allowed to come from the battery and a max total power that is allowed to be delivered to the rider during the race. After the race the data is downloaded and anyone who exceeds the limits is given a time penalty or DQd.

It would then be up to the manufacturers to optimise the motor to make the most out of the available power.

As it currently exists, it's a bit of a joke and a wasted opportunity, imo.
