No need for it to be free, but what triggers me the most is "monthly" subscription. Just make it a season pass, host ALL races on the same platform and that should be it. I skipped this race because I canceled the subscription in July (didn't want to pay because there were no races) and I couldn't be bothered to renew.
@racecase: The porn sex wet clap on the landers was infuriating. Just felt like they thought we were the most small minded creatures on earth. #fap #fap #case #fap
But I was even more bothered when they were up in the highlands, no viewers around, drone/heli 100 feet in the sky and they started to pump in heavy breathing sounds in the dead silence of the open mountains as if he's on a Peloton trainer in your living room.
GOD AWFUL!!!!
Oh, and gonna post this more than once. If you're logged into GCN+ & there are no World Champs videos, you gotta use VPN. Log out of your browser. Log out of GCN+, pick a Euro country on VPN, open your browser, log in to GCN+ & BOOM. World Champs.
Rather than pop up a "geo-block" notice on screen if you're in the wrong country, GCN+ simply shows a blank screen. VPN active, all the videos for finals are all there.
@drake88: this is how it’s always been. Even when Redbull was broadcasting the World Cups, you often had to watch world champs on a different service (and probably use a VPN).
The World Champs broadcast rights are and haven’t been auctioned off separately from the World Cup broadcast rights
Pick Germany on your VPN then log back into GCN+. Juniors, Womens & Mens World Championship Finals all are on GCN+.
That's why I was posting multiple times about it. People that are geo-blocked on GCN+ aren't TOLD and there is no "blocked in your area" warning. It's just a blank screen.
When you log back into GCN+ on a VPN using an authorized country, ALL World Champs cycling events, even BMX pop up on screen and are watchable.
@PHX77: So in the recap video that is on YouTube, you can hear it at 13 seconds when she cleanly lands a back side of a jump but you hear a wet sex sound or what sounds like a wet grocery bag getting smacked.
@pmhobson: Indeed, however this year we are pissed off. You used to get the entire race on replay afterwards, now not even a drop. They could at least put up the top 5 runs like RB used to.
@pmhobson: When Redbull streamed it was always free on the redbull.tv site. Maybe there were country restrictions, but I never had trouble watching it in the UK that I can recall. Not since the Freecaster days.
@redrook: if Redbull had the rights to broadcast in your country, yes.
But in the US, for example, Redbull never had those rights as far as I can recall. You had to pay for Flo or NBC Sports or GCN+.
My point was that the rights to broadcast World Champs has always been auctioned off separately from the rights to broadcast World Cups. That has not changed.
@commental: oops, well I guess I was wrong! I'm sure there was one race last year that happened for, but maybe I am misremembering or it was longer ago. If its on the redbull site they clearly were able to show it!
@commental: actually, are you sure about that? I looked at the link you posted and there is a list of countries that were not geo blocked, and UK/GB is not on the list. It does say that the replay is available 1 hour after the event though, so I guess that is why you can watch it from the UK now?
@Coops1980: As I said, 99% sure. Did you scroll right to the bottom and read this; "You are from Albania, France, Slovakia, Sweden or UK? Please watch the stream here." Which took you to this page; www.redbull.com/gb-en/events/uci-mountain-bike-world-championships-en The reason I'm 99% sure is that my brother contacted me immediately after the race to say he'd watched on the BBC and I said I'd also watched, but with much better commentary. As far as I know we were always able to watch Worlds on RBTV in the UK, I don't ever remember it being blocked.
@commental: oh yes I see. A bit confusing then, one page says not available in UK, the other clearly says it was! Or at least the English only stream, which would have been fine for me! Maybe I missed that link last year and tired to watch the wrong one.. so I watched it on UCI for no good reason! Thought it was a bit odd at the time it wasn't available on redbull...
@commental: not sure if this year was much better.. Was watching the UCI youtube stream initially but they set it to private half way through the women's race! A combo of tiz cycling + bbc got me through it in the end. I didn't mean to question you before by the way, was just going off my hazy memories of last year. I probably owe @redrook an apology too!
@Coops1980: All good mate. I'd say this year was worse. I also watched a mix of Tiz and BBC, but coverage was subpar compared to previous years, especially knowing that Warner had contacted the BBC and offered his services for free, but they went with Needles and Matt Parry instead.
@commental: yeah they missed a trick there, mad not to take him up on that! I quite liked Neil Donohue, lacked a bit of energy maybe (classic Neil) but he had some good insights at times.
@Coops1980: did he actually contact the BBC through official channels? It was my understanding that he mentioned he would do it free to Bernard Kerr(?) during Hardline practice.
By that point, the BBC surely already had their announcers lined up, contracted, briefed, and ready to go with direct deposit set up. Would have been rather rude to boot one of them off at that point (regardless of how great it wild have been to have Rob in the booth)
@pmhobson: Yeah you're right to be fair. Might have been too short notice. All I know is what I saw on BK's video, I think RW said he had contacted the BBC to offer to do it for free, I wasn't sure at the time if he was just joking anyway. I think a mate said he had posted something about it on Instagram too but haven't seen that.
A couple years ago, I was dumb enough to argue with someone here on PB that UCI is doing their best & are just as interested in seeing downhill thrive and improve than all us downhill lovers combined.
That was laughable and I owe that person an overbearing apology: UCI completely blows
This DH season has me scratching my head even though I watched the first three races. Started insanely late, ends in what could be snowstorms, and if UCI / discovery "wants to bring mountain biking to the world" why are they paywalling it behind obscure platforms and not including all the races? People who don't already know the sport are not going to access it this way - This format cannot possibly be drawing hundreds of thousands or even 1 million new viewers when it's losing the core audience
I subscribed to GCN the day of the first race to try and minimize subscription cost, and after a month of no racing - only to get punked by world champs not being shown on GCN - I canceled. I even tried subscribing to a VPN to try to watch world champs but no matter what I did, I could not watch this race, so a minute and a half of "highlights" is a slap in our faces
I hate to abandon watching world cup downhill I don't see any other option, these f*cking idiots have made it unwatchable, uninteresting & pathetic. Please go & burn UCI. You have taken something amazing and wonderful and turned it into total garbage
None of this is for the pros, the sport, the spirit, or even the fans – this is just to try and make money. They can all go f*ck off
@Monkeyass: I do tend towards hyperbolims followed by retreat, but this one was my retreat. f*ck UCI and f*ck even watching these petty recaps. I just don't care anymore.
Completely agree. Tried my hardest to try and Watch it and had to ultimately give up after using a couple of hours trying to watch the replay. The only place I found was charging 30 bucks which I wasn’t going to pay for one race. Also bought GCN+ think8ng this would give me access but no. Great work UCI for excluding even your core fans
I'vr been saying from the early... There is a conspiracy to take over something that was running too smooth and better and better... Just cutting the potential... REMEMBER GUYS... mtbiking IS NOT into the interest of the WEF and company it's agendas... They want ppl/cyborgs into cages/"smart" cities and forbide as much they can any access to breath nature... They just give tons of money to Ball and UCI to blown up our sport... Time will say I hope riders and RB will be brave enough to react soon... I wish to be wrong really but I know too much about this MF...
World Champs has always been sold off to another broadcaster in the U.S...................... but yes, good to see you're coming to your senses about the UCI.
@scott-townes: I recall this (and going and it w/ a VPN) but this year I fig'd the GCN subscription would end that problem... but I didn't do my homework. I did click on one of the links someone posted here and watched 15 or 20 minutes but with that porn sex/trash bag slapping sound some f*cking moron laugh-tracked into the feed, I just couldn't watch... also the single most boring commentary I've ever heard - I guess they had one of the GMBN guys co-commenting minting and he's a smart guy, knows his stuff, just made it super boring. UCI & GCN 2 Discovery can rot, I'll just read the stats sheets when it's done now.
Sick. A min 30 sec of highlights. What did we do to ever deserve this gift? Our sport will never grow as long as uci continues to run it like a professional kindergarten. I mean even the edit was garbage. Higher a damn youtuber
gonna post this more than once. If you're logged into GCN+ & there are no World Champs videos, you gotta use VPN. Log out of your browser. Log out of GCN+, pick a Euro country on VPN, open your browser, log in to GCN+ & BOOM. World Champs.

@pargolf8: Exactly. The replay or at least a decent snippet of it needs to be on YouTube where it can get recommended to anyone watching a bike video anywhere in the world. They then watch it and enjoy it and maybe decide they will watch the live stream.
@blowmyfuse: Super helpful! Watching options were explained in the most confusing way possible - wasn't even clear whether VPN was going to be sufficient.
Seeing Kolb's reaction when he got down the hill in 2nd is worth any setup hassle - so great to see a guy be genuinely happy for a fellow racer.
Now why UCI doesn't want anyone else to see that is beyond me...
It's not that bad, world champs is the same as ever. World cups cameras are better than ever and the commentary is worse than what we are used to. Yes we have to pay for world cups.
@jaame: Okay there are no replays, the commentary is not great. But the actual footage of the 3 races I managed to watch on the bootleg website were really good in terms of camera coverage for the fast guys. The production was crap and they'd cut in and out at random times and have a dumb drone shot. However when they did get it right, which was more often than not, there were a lot more cameras on course than redbulls coverage. I recall watching what felt like Jordan Williams's entire run and that was pretty freaking awesome.
@russthedog: I haven't watched because I've not got a TV licence and I'm not paying for one. I used to watch the replays for which one does not need a TV licence because it's not live. The YouTube highlights are awful this year - two minutes long and only showing the top three in a weird order. Also there seems to be GMBN and UCI showing the same shit with different commentary (both poor). For the past ten years or more it's been possible for tight c*nts like me to view a decent broadcast legally and free. Now it's not.
"Catch up on all the action" is a bit generous for a 1,5 min lackluster video for a world championship event. It really is a bleak year for mountainbike broadcasting
gonna post this more than once. If you're logged into GCN+ & there are no World Champs videos, you gotta use VPN. Log out of your browser. Log out of GCN+, pick a Euro country on VPN, open your browser, log in to GCN+ & BOOM. World Champs.

The full (paid for) coverage wasn’t worth the subscription fee. No commentary. Complete waste of money. This season had been so boring to watch. Bring back rob Warner
I watched the full race on GCN+ with a vpn. It had commentary, all be it not Warner caliber of course. The lame piped in bike landing noises were well…. lame. No idea who dreamt that up? I kept commenting that the bikes sounded clapped out. They had plenty of good camera locations but didn’t show them for most riders. They had some drone footage from 1000’ in the air that didn’t make sense. However, I love the sport and the racing was really good. It will take more than this to kill the spirit of dh. Will make seeing it live at snowshoe that much better. I don’t mind paying to watch it, is what it is. It cost me 1/2 a maxxis tire. Not sure how boycotting GCN+ coverage is good for the sport either?
I watched the 1st three races and was pissed at the commentary w/ Lenzerheide, then "fine, they're figuring it out" for the second followed by "OK, they're getting in the groove now" followed by "this is just garbage now". I'm done.
Rob was - is - the shit and he cannot be duplicated or replaced. The fact that no one's even trying to get close is confounding. What the actual f*ck is going on here? The racers are going w /the flow - fine, they're pros. This coverage and the whole plan is total garbage. This is what Greed X Idiocy looks like.
@Bigricko89 I've had the GCN+ no commentary issue. At least on my player the audio stream defaults to "ambient noise" and has caught me out a few times watching what I thought was filler while waiting for the racing to start. I had to open the audio settings and choose English to hear Ric and Donny.
Not saying it's great, or VFM, but it should be there.
It just needs a Warner option now and we're getting somewhere.
@blowmyfuse "Luckily" us UK folk don't need to use VPN to see the stream. Just need to muck about with the audio.
@Mtn-Goat-13: yes it sounded like a weird squish sound when they landed jumps on the motorway. I thought I was loosing my shit but Cathro points it out in his video recap was well. Super fuggin lame.
@Struggleteam: It was awful and I noticed it almost immediately in the women's race.
It literally sounded like someone smacking a trash bag of water. What made me realize it was fake was it repeating identically every single jump and then a girl back wheel slapped the ground and then the front wheel slapped, but there was no "splat" "splat"...just one "splat". After that...I couldn't not hear it every single racer.
noticed that they were piping in the heavy breathing sounds with Brook McDonald but then they turned it up LOUD for Bruni & were talking him up.
There were no cameras or anything near the riders up on the open highlands. Riders were FLYING but you didn't hear a rock ping or gravel scrape yet you're hearing heavy breathing from Bruni. That's why I said it sounded like a guy on a Peloton stationery bike.
@Mtn-Goat-13: when Bruni is being filmed from above and hitting high speed stuff, you'll suddenly hear heavy breathing sprinting but no bike sounds, no water, no gravel, no "whoosh" of him passing by a mic.
All while being filmed from a drone 60-80 feet up in the air.
Think it needs to be called DH Cup now since UCI feels only parts of the world can watch depending on your location. Shouldn’t need VPN workarounds in 2023!
@Struggleteam: the thing GCN+ did different is literally they don't even tell you you're geo-blocked. You click on Worlds when logged in and it's a blank screen.
But close browser, VPN to the right country, open GCN+ & all of the content is readily watchable.
First time I've seen a video provider simply make the screen a "ghost" for geo-restricted countries. Usually they say it's geo-restricted as you click on dead links furiously.
Isn't there like a riders union or something now? I wonder what they're thinking about all this. Pull an NHL/NBA/MLB move and boycott a race and demand some changes... for the sake of the future of the sport?! Pinkbike, can you get someone on the horn for an interview about this?
On The Ride Companion podcast BK said that interest in the rider's union is waning, despite his best efforts. It would be a real shame if nothing comes of it, without them speaking up as a unified voice the sport is likely to continue in this downward spiral.
What a disaster here in Italy. Rai has the rights and didn't broadcast whatsoever. GCN+ didn't have the stream nor replay. So this is the first we've seen of the race after the UCI youtube stream went down.
Gonna post this more than once. If you're logged into GCN+ & there are no World Champs videos, you gotta use VPN. Log out of your browser. Log out of GCN+, pick a Euro country on VPN, open your browser, log in to GCN+ & BOOM. World Champs.

@darkgiant: thought you were referring to thinking it was awful there was no way to watch Worlds. Most people didn't realize it was on GCN+ b/c of the way they didn't even show a screen to say it was blocked.
In my opinion the riders should try and form a collective / unionise and bin off the UCI. The UCI as a governing body is demonstrably not fit for purpose regards DH racing.
The only way I see an alternative series realistically working is if the riders all move en-masse. Involving the team at RedBull could be way to smooth the transition to something new.
The riding this year has been amazing, but the production / delivery of it has been a piss take. Shameful.
HORRIFIC announcing even worse than Cedric trying to speak English.
The only reporting I can stand this season is Wyn
our sport is sounding like an after thought.
I wasn't tempted to subscribe after so much negative feedback about the commentary at WC events this year, even though I thought the complaints were probably overdone.
In actuality, judging by these useless clips, it was far worse than I could possibly have imagined. Two idiots screaming the same repetitive stuff over each other rider after rider - watching this for several hours could have been torment invented by the Inquisition
Watched the DH series for around 10 years. Always enjoyed Rob Warner and what he brings to the commentary. Many unforgettable moments under his reign... Moments like Danny Harts world champs run, Gwins chainless win to name a few.
I have not bothered subscribing to GCN, and by the sounds of things i made the right decision.
Bring back red bull, bring back warner!
I watched it for free on bbc television live, but not what we are used from the past world cup years. Dissapointing from uci, as normal for dh races...
Didn't think it could get much worse than the live streams, but a min and 30 sec of "highlights" from the world championship really takes the cake for me.
If you missed the live coverage from the 2023 Downhill World Championships at Fort William you can catch up on all the action-packed racing below., by watching all 1.49 seconds of it with some awful shite commentary.
FFS!! The football world cup is being played in my country but most games are behind a pay wall, the MTB I watched religiously is behind one, and the races that aren't can't be watched!!
Oh well at least I'm going to bed at a sensible time.
Sadly I've purposely missed the live broadcast and now I feel like I did not catch up on all the action-packed racing here in this post. Understand that all of the fans here get spit on the face, I just hope the riders would be treated better than before
Is this really Highlights or just 1.April ?? Highlights as if made by a 4-year-old child. Also Race highlights - Czech Downhill Top On Trail Cup Ještěd is a steamer somewhere else and almost with a minimal budget.
Simply the worst ever World Cup broadcast!
Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, they took out McLaughlin and Cedric for a low-spirited and BORING voice!!
Hopefully next year the UCI will at least be smart enough and sell paper views for the final's live streams...

Man that commentary is trash. Don't interrupt if you haven't even thought your sentence out, in fact don't interrupt unless you're Rob Warner. Either provide commentary or STFU, but don't try to emulate Rob's energy.
The UCI stream was broadcast in the UK by BBC and it is being claimed by them (during an interview with the winner Charlie Hatton on Sunday evening) that they had 1 million viewers tune in for the event.
Biggest race of the year, and a 1min 30 second highlight video! Where are the full runs of the top 3? This year is the worst for DH coverage for a long time

Actual coverage of world champs in us was better than ever even if flo is stupid expensive for a mtb fan. But man these highlight videos are atrocious. Like absolutely horrific. What a joke.
Nobody who decides to release only 1.5 minutes of highlights of the 2023 uci worlds dh is going to read this. The only people reading your complaints and suggestions is yourselves.

@Steventux: didn't think there was anything wrong with Needles' commentary. The other guy was very generic, but overall I didn't think it was that bad.
I thought the commentary was quite rambling. Ric M does it too, like a constant background noise. I turned the volume down to compensate. Needles was OK.
@el-nombre: It's difficult not to miss Warner in these situations. Obviously a GB rider and a seasoned British commentator would have been slightly more emotive than Needles' sanguine monotone. The other guy peppered his commentary with "uh"s to the point where I thought he was related to Steve Lamacq.
I skipped this race because I canceled the subscription in July (didn't want to pay because there were no races) and I couldn't be bothered to renew.

But you can't hear it every time b/c Needles on the UCI recap is screaming over it.
On the GCN+ broadcast with Cunningham & Neil Donoghue, in the women, every single rider, every single lander on the lower half..."splat".
Once you noticed it....you couldn't ignore it.
Didn't matter if they landed perfectly on transition or rear wheel cased a lander ...."splat"
But in the US, for example, Redbull never had those rights as far as I can recall. You had to pay for Flo or NBC Sports or GCN+.

Most people didn't realize it was on GCN+ b/c of the way they didn't even show a screen to say it was blocked.
They just showed a page saying Worlds.
The only way I see an alternative series realistically working is if the riders all move en-masse. Involving the team at RedBull could be way to smooth the transition to something new.
The riding this year has been amazing, but the production / delivery of it has been a piss take. Shameful.
Highlights as if made by a 4-year-old child.
Also Race highlights - Czech Downhill Top On Trail Cup Ještěd is a steamer somewhere else and almost with a minimal budget.
