Florian Nicolai announced he was moving on from Canyon last month after two years with the German brand, and today we've found out where he's landed. For 2020, he'll be joining Trek's roster and riding the Slash on the Enduro World Series. Nicolai only failed to finish in the top 10 three times in two seasons and finished a very close second to Sam Hill in the overall. We look forward to seeing what Nicolai and Trek can accomplish together in the coming year.

Hattie Harnden is also joining Trek's enduro team, competing in the U21 category. Nicolai and Harnden will join returning riders Katy Winton and Pedro Burns on the Trek Factory Enduro team. Ruaridh Cunningham had a difficult 2019 with ongoing health issues and looks to be off the factory team.

On the cross-country side, France's Stephane Tempier joins Anton Cooper, Emily Batty, Evie Richards, and Jolanda Neff. Tempier finished sixth overall in the World Cup XC standings last year and is hoping to lay down a good result at the Tokyo Olympics as the 33-year-old says they will likely be his last Olympics.

The downhill team of Charlie Harrison, Reece Wilson, Kade Edwards and Ethan Shandro remains unchanged for 2020.

Florian Nicolai Interview

We caught up with Florian for a quick catch up on his move to Trek:

How do you reflect on last season?

It was the best season of my career. Despite losing the title I found myself at the top of the series for a good part of the season and it was full of emotions until the end.

How were you feeling going into the final round in Zermatt?

I was pretty nervous, I was very excited and stressed. I was trying to put it into perspective and tell myself that this was a chance to fight for the title with the fastest enduro rider on the planet. To be honest I had eczema all over my body and it all disappeared the day after the race I imagined that it was the stress of this race.

How hard was it racing in Zermatt with the added overall pressure?

To be honest I've always had pressure for a race but like this one never! It was a very hard and demanding race, I had to be careful with the fall and the mechanical breakage so a lot of parameters to take into account in addition to having to ride and take risks to go for the world title.

What prompted you to move teams from Canyon?

I spent 2 splendid years with Canyon, certainly the two best years of my career, but for personal reasons, I preferred to take off, leave for new projects and get out of my comfort zone.

Florian Nicolai has been looking quick in practice. Expect another top result from the Frenchman.

Did you get a lot of offers from other teams?

I had several proposals indeed, 4 or 5, which is not bad I think! I would like to ride with everyone but unfortunately, it's not possible.

What made you settle for Trek over other brands?

Simply because it's a brand that I respect a lot and I really like their bikes. My agent and I contacted him and they were interested too.

What are you most excited about in your new partnership with Trek?

I am excited to work with Trek for several reasons. Always competing in EWS with the same personal goals, I would also participate in E-bikes races. There would be the possibility to try a World Cup in DH, you need UCI points but I think who would be able to find a solution if I feel ready to take the start.

A point also that I like very much and that is new for me and I'm learning! It's in R&D, it's a point that I would really like to be interested in and Trek are very attentive on this subject.

Florian Nicolai struggled to run up front and as a result his hopes of a world title were dashed

What are your goals for 2020?

My goal for next season will be, first of all to have fun on the bike and put the pressure only in the tires. Then I aim to continue in the same vein as 2019 but the level increases enormously year after year.

I broke my elbow this winter and to be honest it's my first major bike fracture. I missed a month of training and I'm just getting back on track. So I have to finish the rehabilitation, strengthen my arm and regain my confidence and forget the fear to regain speed. but it's in the right direction.

PRESS RELEASE: Trek

Trek’s marquee off-road program is proud to welcome three new riders to its ranks with Florian Nicolai, Stephane Tempier, and Hattie Harnden. Nicolai and Tempier, both French, will bolster an already strong roster with Tempier joining the cross country squad and Nicolai joining the enduro squad. Harnden hails from England and joins the enduro team as a U21 competitor. These three riders complete the 2020 roster which welcomes back many returning downhill, cross country, and enduro riders from 2019.

Florian Nicolai joins the enduro team looking to continue his consistent performances in the Enduro World Series. After a series of exceptional overall podium performances in both 2019 and 2018, 2020 will be a year where Florian looks for the top step. “I’m excited to ride the Slash in 2020, with its proven geometry and excellent suspension, it is the perfect bike for me,” Nicolai said. Growing up near the Alps around Nice, Nicolai is at home on challenging, technical trails and loves tight turns. Hattie Harnden is a young, talented, and multidisciplinary rider who will focus on enduro in the 2020 season. She transitions to Trek Factory Racing from T-MO Racing, where she benefited from the mentorship of Trek Ambassador Tracy Moseley. Returning riders on the 2020 roster are Scotland’s Katy Winton and Chile’s Pedro Burns.

Stephane Tempier bolsters the cross country roster after a successful 2019 that saw him finish in sixth place overall in the UCI rankings, highlighted by a third place at World Championships in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada. Tempier will bring his consistent top-10 form into 2020. “I’m excited to be riding for such a famous bicycle producer and to be part of the design and development process for new product,” Tempier said. “Performing at the Tokyo Olympics is a big, big goal for me this year because it is probably my final Olympics.” Joining Tempier on the XC squad will be New Zealand’s Anton Cooper, Canada’s Emily Batty, England’s Evie Richards, and Switzerland’s Jolanda Neff.

The Trek Factory Racing downhill riders for 2020 are returning riders Charlie Harrison from the United States, Reece Wilson from Scotland, Kade Edwards from England, and Ethan Shandro from Canada.

All teams will continue to focus on the highest level of competition for their relevant disciplines, with the Enduro World Series, UCI World Cup, and 2020 Olympics being key points of focus. Stay tuned for more on the 2020 team look in the coming months.

What's Greg Minnar doing next to Nicolai in that first picture?
  • 13 9
Pretty sure that’s Trek’s kinda standard sheep... think Not2Bad.
  • 9 0
3rd instalment this year with new additions would be NotSoBad
  • 21 8
@crash-brother: his minnaar joke went right over your head, didn't it?
  • 29 0
@thesharkman: nah, he‘s right, sheep =/= goat. I guess the third installment is called My Bad.

Don't tell GMBN you called anyone else other than Sam Hill that...

 @thesharkman: Sheep isn’t a goat

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET A NEW, UPDATED SLASH?!?!?!?!?
  • 8 1
Well. I mean it's kinda abvious it's coming 2021. They updated every other bike in their line up top to bottom but not the Slash for 2020 so.... Specialized did this with the new Enduro as well. The Enduro rolled out this year but the year previouse we Saw a huge update to the rest of their lineup. Norco is doing the same with their Range. All bikes for 2020 big updates.... Except one....
  • 10 1
@hamncheez a new slash wouldn't be that much different from the current one, would probably have a steeper SA, slightly slacker HTA and maybe a bit more travel to bring it in line with the new enduro, megatower etc. I wouldn't expect a dramatic overhaul in suspension kinematics or anything like that.
  • 2 0
@TheBearDen: apparently high pivot/idler for new Range.
  • 3 1
 It's called Slash 8
  • 4 0
In carbon, the current generation of Slash is missing the M/L (18.5") size. They only added this size with the MY2019 release of the aluminum Slash. If there's no plan to add another size in carbon, there needs to be some geometry revision at a minimum. Also, when I had my 18.5" Slash 8, the longest dropper I could fit was 125mm. My other builds from different brands allow 170mm (or 180mm with OneUp) so seattube length and seatpost insertion depth is also something for them to get sorted for the MY2021.
  • 1 0
 @jaydawg69: shhhhhhh don't tell anyone....
  • 4 0
@AD4M: 1: Superboost, 2: DT storage box, 3: Identical form factor to current bike, 4:Slightly steeper SA, 5:Slightly slacker HA (I reckon it won't be below 64) 6: UDH 7:Still all the things people love to hate - Knockblock/special shocks.8: Reach at 480 for a Large #2021SLASH
When was the Slash 8 available for 2020 - August? That's when I expect the new 2021 Slash to drop.
  • 4 5
@nouseforaname: so slightly less boring than it already is... nothing really innovative and geo behind the times. I can't see Superboost happening. Useless standard.
  • 6 0
@jaydawg69: enlighten me on how it's boring? Lol you mean it has two triangles with two tires and some springy bits?
  • 3 0
Current slash is pretty darn good already, but it would be nice to have a steeper sta. I am slightly biased tho also because I own one. And putting a coil and a 170mm fork on it was the best thing I ever did
  • 1 0
@TheBearDen: nothing really that stands out as far as cutting edge imo. With all the Trek $ behind the brand, you think they would come with something more innovative. So many other brands are light years ahead including Norco.
  • 1 0
 @TheBearDen: they updated the remedy?
  • 1 0
@jaydawg69: I feel that's the new thing now for long travel enduro/freeride bikes. Companies release a new downhill bike, then once it's perfected, they put the technology from those bikes into their long travel enduro's. Specialized did it with the Enduro and it worked out great, so seeing some HSP tech into the new Range would be sweet!
  • 8 0
@Ryan2949: So the new slash is going to look like a session then? Oh hang on a minute...
  • 1 0
 @coregrind: A OneUp 150mm post didn't work for you? That's what I'm running on my M/L Slash 8.
  • 2 0
@Ryan2949: DH is the epitome of speed so it makes sense. Usually it involves some kinematic tweaks for pedaling though.
  • 3 2
@AD4M: Haven't you been reading the pinkbike comments? The current slash is totally unridable because the geo is so antiquated! Never mind the second fastest rider on earth freely choosing the brand with the terrible bike out of multiple competing offers.
  • 2 0
@AD4M: your not wrong if anything steeper seat angle and longer or just as a further size XXL, travel remain the same
  • 1 0
@linds0r: maybe a 150mm from OneUp would have fit. Would a 180mm fit? No way, and that’s what I’ve got now on a few other builds. If they address that on the next edition, I’ll be a Slash customer again.
  • 1 0
Steeper STA, which requires more reach, the rest of the numbers are fine with me. Maybe either a lower BB or slacker HTA, but not too much. I mean, the trunion mount is dumb, and reacIVe also sucks and sounds like something that belongs on a Naild R3act2Play, but other than that its a great bike.
  • 1 0
@Ttimer: how do you know he rode the current Slash?
  • 1 0
@jaydawg69: Remember this day then. Superboost will be a thing.
  • 1 0
I like heal clearance. None of the big 3 will go to sb.
  • 1 0
All they have to do is remove they knockblock and they got a new and improved 2021 model...
  • 2 1
@nskerb: they updated it about as much as you would expect for the step child in the lineup of bikes....

The remedy got a steeper seat angle
  • 2 1
@Ttimer: The slash is completely ridable bro, its an extremely fast bike that pedals well.
  • 1 0
@Jumartel5: false. Geometry has a shelf life. You can only use for so long before it goes bad. A bike with a seat tube angle less than 78 degrees is no only unrideable its downright dangerous. Shame on Trek for putting so many people at risk and not supplying fresh, unspoiled geometry. Profits over people I guess.
  • 2 0
@hamncheez: trunnion isnt all that bad as it allows for larger air volume and better bushing overlap, there's some risk of damaged threads in the shock body but I'd say the pros outweigh the cons.

I will agree that ReAactiv is absolute f*cking garbage, and its very clear that Trek knows it as well as there Enduro team does not use them.
  • 1 0
Didn't a new Slash just come out last year? I mean, I'm still on my 26" 2013. Every year I say I'm gonna get the newest one, but they keep updating it, so i never bother, cause there's always a new one...
  • 1 0
@TheBearDen: *Pushes glasses up nose* technically, its the new metric sizing that increases bushing overlap (questionable benefit on non-yoke suspension designs and coil shocks) not trunion mount. To read a good discussion on why trunion mounts suck, read the comments on this article; specifically scroll down to @Zaffs comment www.pinkbike.com/news/cane-creek-announces-trunnion-mount-versions-of-db-air-cs-and-db-coil-cs-shocks.html
  • 1 0
@hamncheez: you are right metric did allow for the overlap but trunnion itself allows for the entire system including the bikes design to have the highest available benefit from the metric sizing.

I remember that guys comment hard to disagree but at the same time I don't think trunnion is as aweful as we make it out to be.

For the past four years I rode Trek only. This had a lot to do with employee/ racer discounts through my shop.
But for this year I'm all switched over to Norco. It's kinda nice not having your bike manufacturer do things and tell you that it's the best possible option for you, just to have to go out and buy a f*cking normal shock that works....
  • 1 0
@nouseforaname: 157mm+ is already a thing. Should be entertaining to see what Trek has to say about it if your prediction becomes true, considering its role in intro of 148mm way back in 2014.
  • 1 0
@ceecee: trek has had pleanty to say about it. One of the to guys in their development team said what any other brands development team would say.

"We plan to take a close look at any new industry standards or designs and discuss within the team if it's suitable and worth it to make the change to our bikes moving forward"
  • 1 0
@nouseforaname: Session 29 has it, tho it's not mentioned as a feature in Web mktg copy. With same spacing, Phoenix 29 has same travel, cm shorter chainstay, and narrower Q factor....
  • 1 0
@ceecee: It's not always about having the shortest chainstays. Anyway, I guess we'll see around August.
  • 1 0
@nouseforaname: I’ll agree slash needs longer rear but I don’t see trek going that direction just a more conservative evolution
  • 12 0
Hope Ruaridh Cunningham is on the mend, he has been really unlucky with injuries. The last one sounded properly scary.

@PauRexs: Agree. I did not see Canyon release any Flo-specific videos except maybe one of him riding with Fabien? Rocky Mountain's "Flo like Water" just captured the edges of what Flo can do! Also the one of him doing the hip-hop dog dancing....

  • 2 0
Qualification points Solution to race World Cup dh?The solution is to race at a national level and podium. Multiple times like everyone else. If the UCI is letting racers bypass this system with a “ he’s really fast trust me’ note then the system is bs.
  • 2 0
I don't understand why the Slash gets so much hate. It is true that is not the longest bike, that it could have a steeper seat angle but it is a pretty light and fast bike. A bike doesn't get better by just being longer. I'm pretty sure it smokes some bikes with more updated geo cause it's all about the balance and I think it is a pretty well balanced bike. My only negative is that the suspension could be a little bit softer but hey, it is an enduro machine and it most cases, firmer is faster.

Move to a different team?!? Now it starts to make sense to me. I couldn't believe how he seemed to fold in the final meet in Switzerland. The French G O A T ( pulling a blank on his name) made a crack then about how Florian had lost before the Enduro began.

why should they. She had one bad year last year. And if you look at the Trek Athlete rooster there a many on it who have been riding for Trek since long time or ages. Kind of Loyality to the athletes .....even employing long time athletes like Shandro or Tracy Moseley after their racing career

@clemson: because she isnt delivering the results and completely overshadowed by Neff
  • 6 0
@CM999: but she has lots of followers on IG!!!! Hoping EB has a better year.

@CM999 she does a lot of events to bring more people to cycling, so she is a good advocate and influencer.

Half of Trek's professional riders produce no results, they're just super popular and are great brand ambassadors. Even their WCDH program right now. Harrison is the best rider on the team, but Kade Edwards and Reece Wilson have large social media presences.
  • 1 1
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: Reece Wilson is no slouch bud. I wouldn't sleep on him when it comes to results.

The best rider on that team is Kade. I doubt there's many pro riders who can do what he does on every type of bike. He's not their fastest RACER but he's their best RIDER.

I have a hard time being hard on a young team like that especially with two of the three coming off different teams the year before
  • 2 0
@TheBearDen: I'm not saying Reece is a slouch, by no means is he one. He just hasn't got many good results. He managed to qualify consistently, which is a step above Kade, but his results have been so so. Charlie Harrison is the only rider on their current DH program with reasonably consistent results.
Kade is an incredible rider, super talented and exciting to watch, but I think he's more along the lines of a Ratboy than a GOAT. (Even thou Ratty managed some pretty incredible results). Maybe if Kade matures some and can stay uninjured in the off season he'll have a chance of being a top WCDH contender, but I wonder if he has the patience. He'd rather be doing Fest or Rampage IMHO. The kid got a huge ego boost last year getting a trophyish-thing at Fest and I'd imagine having Cam MacCaul tell him he has the best tricks of all the WCDH riders has to be a boost.
Trek has deep pockets and incredible talent.

EB and JNeff have a lot of IG followers. Not everyone buys bikes because the racer is the fastest......well....Jolanda is damn fast.
  • 2 1
What's wrong with the current slash
  • 1 0
Not much. It's a bit short IMO. But it was designed and launched in 2016 which is before the current trend of long bikes really took hold. Back then Chris Porter was just a fringe mentalist, now he's the messiah.
