The Tasmanian Devil: EWS Round 2 Full Race Highlights - Video

Apr 10, 2017 at 18:20
by UCI Mountain Bike World Series

Round two of the Enduro World Series, the Shimano Enduro Tasmania, was undoubtedly one of the craziest races to date. Relentless rain resulted in crashes, mechanicals and unpredictable racing which led to some fresh new faces on the podium.

 Fantastic coverage.
  • 60 15
Agreed but still missing Cunynghame for commentary, new guys not the same
  • 19 3
@gunners1: as someone said previously, he has sadly (for us) other promising projects Wink so sit down and enjoy the new one..
  • 21 2
@gunners1: He is literally not the same guy. But give it time, IMO he's just as interesting as Cunyngham.
  • 44 1
I appreciate the coverage, but I still feel like I have very little idea about how the race is shaping up when we're only seeing like 3 different sections of each stage.

What I would love to see is full POV stages from some of the top riders included as part of the official EWS coverage package. Yeah, that's a huge ask, but this is basically what you get with rally racing. And isn't this basically the mountain bike version of that?
  • 8 0
Where is T-Mo in all of this? Wasn't she billed as one of the presenters/commentators?
  • 1 1
@Odinson: She got a real job.
  • 8 2
@gunners1: agreed, he was so professional and rounded and still entertaining, big loss imo!
  • 23 0
Ah hold on lads, give him a chance. He does the DH World Cup coverage and he is a good writer for Mountain Bike UK mag. Give him time, he knows his stuff.
  • 8 1
@gunners1: he seriously needs some voice coaching and delivery skills... the same flat monotone gets tedious - and I never thought I'd say that about a delightful Irish accent.
  • 11 6
I think Ric is legit. he looks like a cool dude you'd meet on a lonely ride and would not hesitate to ask you if he can tag along. Good energy. Always good to see a change if only to get a point of reference. Cunny was cool and pro but also a bit golf-ish for trail jizz, which is slightly strange considering his DH past. He seems more fit for TDF or F1 commentary and I mean it in a good way.
  • 3 5
@Hansfd: he is from Northern Ireland, their accent is not quite as charming...
  • 4 2
@WAKIdesigns: You have described Cunny bang on for me, "a bit golf-ish" perfect!
  • 2 1
@qldmtb: My Missus would strongly disagree, which is good for me! (From N.Ireland but live in NZ, hence flag)
  • 5 0
@feazel: My wife is from N.Ireland and I have spent a fair bit of time over there, it definitely can be charming, but Ric can be a bit monotone, needs to bring out his personality a bit more, so he dose. I bet his wee gutties were boggen after that weekend, looked baltic...
  • 4 1
@gunners1: Cunynghame is in shit with the fuzz, so probably isn't allow to leave the UK.

  • 3 2
@MrJimLahey: He is literally way slower than Cuny on the bike
  • 1 0
@ashyjay: Wow, that's a bit heavy for a bike related offence
  • 5 1
@karatechris: heh in Poland, they used to take your driving license if you had more than 0.2pm and cycle (which is the limit for driving). Then they forbid you to cycle for 2 years. If they caught you doing it: bang! another fine. My buddy got caught riding after 2 beers - into the court, have a nice status of being a criminal for the rest of your life. He was lucky he didn't have weed on him. There's a cool pub with nice outdoor serving at the small airfield in my home town in Poland. Police used to park their car at the end of one of the only two ways out and were checking most cyclists. Off course most of people had at least one beer in them. Fkng a-holes supporting an idiotic law.

I would like to see a little more B roll of the actual stages and racing. Perhaps upping the length by a couple minutes to allow for a little more actual race coverage.
  • 1 1
@jayacheess: yeah and/or similar coverage to UCI DH. I know it will take a lot to cover 7 stages, especially when the athletes only get $750 for third (!?!?!?) but individual stage coverage would be great. I love parking myself in front of the TV for a couple of hours for DH races. I dont do that with football, so i need to do it somewhere!

Overall, the coverage is def getting MUCH better! Also, loving the new commentator!
  • 1 0
Definitely, although narration and music sometimes interfere with each other. Volume of narration could be bit more dominant at times. Not hating, just helping to improve.
  • 6 0
Seemed like a 1/3 of the video of the list of the results. I rather see more biking.
  • 1 0
@jayacheess: plenty pov online. no need to bloat the highlight video that much. maybe just some cuts from a rough section like 10 sec segments
  • 1 0
@trauty: I'd like them as separate videos, but included in the EWS coverage package. Maybe with a slight bit of editing and production at the tail ends. Also, riders are very on and off about recording povs. It would be nice to have EWS organizers spearheading the effort and helping to set up proper camera angles for the riders.
  • 1 0
@ashyjay: dang..lol. I've never heard of someone being detained by the police for being fake drunk. Slow night for the pigs ??Hmm doesn't hold well for the bike and beers crew that I usually go out with. Maybe the laws are different in the uk.
  • 1 1
@qldmtb: Oh mate, you nailed that, laughing so hard. Even a cheeky "so he does"
  • 42 4
I love watching all the EWS coverage and build up videos and it's a fantastic series, but I got a bit of a shock when I saw the cheques that the riders on the podium were holding...the prize money doesn't seem reflective of the effort the riders put in.
  • 23 2
They make their money from sponsors.
  • 8 0
Only a few thousand euros for downhill World Cup too. It's all in the sponsorship
  • 4 1
@Wouldhaveletmego: In all other ''relevant'' sports money come from sponsors but also prize money are way more
  • 2 1
And then you think about soccer players ...
  • 2 1
@b-wicked: And tennis players! I get it though,
footbal/soccer and tennis is watched by millions world wide, EWS, sadly, not so much. Still, the prize money does seem a little insulting.
  • 5 0
I've always wondered how the EWS works from a business perspective... like how would the EWS itself be making money on these races? I think the riders entrance fees are quite minimal, spectators don't pay to watch, it isn't broadcast on TV or the internet, etc. Therefore, I'm not surprised that the riders aren't seeing big prize $$ for the races.

Also not sure how it works from the riders perspective - cost of attending the race would be quite significant and obviously the prize money is very low.

I always assumed that the whole thing is just a giant marketing event - like its basically just a big commercial for the latest gear from all the big bike companies, and the bike companies are the ones who are essentially funding the whole thing by paying all their riders to show up to the races and covering all their costs etc.

I'm not bashing the EWS btw - I love the EWS and I really hope it evolves into something big that ends up on mainstream TV etc., I just have no clue how the $$ works out for everyone involved (I'm an accountant btw).
  • 2 4
@b-wicked: Football players. There is no such sport as "soccer".
  • 3 0
@b-wicked: There is zero prize money for winning in F1
  • 1 0
@chrismac70: Yeah if you don't count the $76,000,000 mercedes got for winning the 2016 championship!
  • 37 8
Amazing race, amazing coverage. Thanks Pinkbike, you guys totally owned it. Greg looked like he was on a DH Worlds final run, on every single shot of him. I think Peaty and Minnaar can go fk themselves with this #notarealsport nonsense. Fkng golden boys. Can't imagine Gwinny, Gee or Hart talking such crap. if this isn't a real sport i don't know what is.
  • 10 33
flag thenotoriousmic (Apr 11, 2017 at 3:03) (Below Threshold)
Steve peat and Greg minnaar can go and f*ck themselves?! Wow... I knew that pinkbike has been infested with sub human scum for quite a while now but I never knew it had gotten this bad. I'd never imagine I'd ever see that especially over some silly semi professional mountain bike race.
  • 11 1
@thenotoriousmic: dont be oversentitive... they need a little bit of shit for saying that, may be the trash talk turns them on hahaha
  • 14 3
@thenotoriousmic: you should know well enough that in every arrangement of human beings there are animosities. Yea Peaty and Minnaar achieved a lot but just like every human being they talk sht every now and then. And they love talking sht about Enduro more than Gwinny likes to talk about Jesus. I met them on three occasions, listened to countless interviews - they are the golden boys of DH racing. For good and bad. I admire them for their riding, Minnie is my role model for riding technique - and this is where my awe ends... End of Rant. Not going to build an altar to stupidity, I look for good in people.
  • 37 6
Good stuff but can't we get more? Perhaps 30 minutes?
  • 7 10
 Demanding much...
  • 22 3
I agree. 15 minutes hardly seems enough
  • 16 0
I saw the video and photo guys they were struggling out there in the rain I saw one go OTB on his bike and another slip down a hill. Hopefully in drier conditions they can get more vision if that was the problem!
  • 4 2
Why not 35 since you ask for 30.
  • 2 0
 Only got 1 camera guy?
  • 40 4
 watch it twice bro
  • 7 0
 @mikeyspaff: That's what she said.
  • 3 0
@Hammm: haha come on mate, they were 25 minute ep's last season
  • 2 0
@kdiff There's TV coverage on the way apparently. You'd have to imagine it's going to be at least 30 minutes.

@excavator666: this man is onto something ha
  • 4 0
@chyu: Go all out and go for 60! Do I hear 60!!!???
  • 1 0
@excavator666: Programs produced for tv are going to be either 23 minutes for a 30 minute slot or 48 for a 60 minute slot.
I think we are seeing a cut down edit of the 30 minute slot and not seeing the rest of it
  • 2 0
@Brenos: Good point. Tracey Mosley is supposed to be presenting the TV version as well, so maybe it's just going to be this footage with some extra narrating edited in.
  • 2 0
@Hammm: Considering the last two years saw edits that were routinely longer than 20 minutes I don't believe anyone is asking too much.
  • 1 0
 @BDKR: Nar. wrong.
  • 26 2
Sam Hill deserves more coverage. I think everyones acknowledging his presence now and it wasnt just a fluke from last year.
  • 20 0
It's Sam Hill, why would anyone consider any result of his a fluke?
  • 3 0
Sam Hill is the MAN!!! I'm so happy that he's doing well in the EWS and I'm not surprised at all. The more difficult the trail is and the worst the conditions are, Sam will kill it!
  • 20 0
Here is my EWS consumption strategy which i think is satisfactory over all,
Tech coverage and pit bits here at PB, also for some stupidly hilarious comments from armchair racers,
Sven's media squid ride and all the slideshows at Vital, specially with the accompanying interviews,
then wait for the 1 min teaser highlights, then this longer coverage,

then i say, thank you for the few moments where i feel that the whole world is not trying to destroy it self, then check the calendar if it's weekend already so i can go riding,

Just in case the media team is reading this, a little constructive criticism:
A little bit more of those juicy end of stage interview, it makes the pro racers seems more human to us mere mortals.
  • 15 0
Shout out to Tassie local Kaino Cannan for 2nd place on stage 3! Well done, boss!
  • 13 2
In my opinion, footage and editing are good, but there are still too many short flashes, can't see the lines and the action properly, need longer cuts.
The "new guy" is ok, I think. What is really annoying is the music, so cheap ad "generic sports edit muzak" with pseudo-epic moments. Please when in doubt keep it raw!
Anyway, I feel I have to thank somebody for producing something like this in such a short time. So, yeah, thanks a lot!
  • 14 1
Richie living up to his name @ 2:30 lol
  • 1 0
Well he's not Richie Polite is he!

Well I hope the EWS goes back to Derby for sure, it's theyre first time and they will be bigger better and looks like they did an amazing job first time up and will only get better! I hope Derby keeps its vibe and roots though and dosent become commercialised while still being successful economically hard but not impossible, don't sell out... Id say the coverage is more down to EWS costs for such a long way to go down under but hopefully that will grow as well, a true World Series should be on every continent! Something WC DH run by those muppets in the UCI still don't get! Long live EWS, long live Derby! It's on my list to do!!!
  • 8 0
I think out of all the disciplines, a one day EWS round must be the most difficult to cover for the media. Downhill you could park half a dozen cameras down the track and capture a big chunk of someone's run. I don't know what the layout is for EWS exactly but those same six camera operators would need to get somewhere decent for the next stage and quickly.
Last time I checked I didn't pay anything to fap away to EWS/World Cup racing. Unlike MotoGP/F1 and numerous other sports I pay for.
  • 10 0
Great coverage! 15 min flew by. Bike and media warriors giving 'er in those conditions on wicked looking trails!!
  • 6 0
Can someone get the new host some cocaine and a hair comb? The racing looked rad but the narrating was more appropriate for a nature docummentary. Also, what up the little commentary from people leading the race throughout the day (e.g. Graves, Hill, Maes, etc). They just kept replaying the same sound bites over and over again. The coverage has definitely taken a dive from last year.
  • 5 0
Nice to catch up on what was happening behind me during the day!

The media guys looked like they were having just as tough a day as the rest of the field, trying to get quality footage in those conditions, whilst looking after their equipment must have been tough. They also kept our spirits up with their random humour Smile
  • 10 2
Only $750 for third place? Wtf is going on with this series. Cover it live and get it on tv and pay these guys .
  • 3 1
Pretty sad payout $$$ for the work these rider put in and the entertainment they provide. Hopefully their sponsorship's pay them well. Live coverage with live helmet cams would be awesome to watch.

I think these videos would benefit from a few things:

1. I want to know, briefly, about each stage beforehand. For example, I want to know if stage 3 is long or short, more or less technical, if it has a lot of pedaling etc.

2. Because riders move up and down in the overall after each stage and because less time is spent on each individual rider (compared to WC DH) it is difficult to keep track of everyone. I think adding avatars (headshots) of each rider next to their name in the overall standing would be helpful.

3. If you watch tissot timing for a WC DH, once a rider is finished with their run their name moves up through the ranks of riders to their current position, it physically slides up to 2nd place, for example. The symbols next to the names on the overall (the green 'up' arrow and red 'down arrow') are great, but perhaps starting with the top ten from the previous stage, physically moving the names (and avatars) to their new position and then zooming into the top 3 would help make sense of the overall movement of the day.

And finally some food for thought: everyone loved Rob Warner's commentary when he was allowed to drink...
  • 3 0
Brilliant video and coverage, hopefully it can be a really interesting season. I know all the top riders must have a really good attitude to achieve what they have but Greg and Isabeau just seem to be always so positive and humble. I see Maes is still charging hard with his win it or bin it philosophy I hope he doesn't loose any motivation, because it hasn't quite worked out for him yet.
  • 7 0
Stoked for Greg and Sam Hill.
  • 3 0
Hey, does anyone who was there know who the rider was that pulled off the move of the day - stage 6 at the rock slab, just before the right-hander catch berm, looked like he was off line and headed off track and then he just picked the bike up and over a gap and then over the big log on the inside of the catch berm. Flicked it sideways mid air for the corner he missed and took off. Crowd went mental. So who was he AND is there any video out there????
  • 2 0
Love watching the EWS content. Thank you Pink bike. Like everyone else would love to hear and see more! Also like everyone else, the new host seems like he needs some delivery tips. I feel like hes always about to cry when talking. Sorry to say it. He does seem sincere but not great in front of the camera or something.
  • 2 0
I love ews and kudos to all of them working hard. But my reaction for this year.... Just like richie rude. Hahaha. Last years coverage and commentary was much better. Sorry ric. But still. For the love of MTB, still thanking EWS and pinkbike
  • 4 2
So much for Specialized having the "best" Enduro bikes. Even with all the talent riding their bikes, they still can't pull off anything substantial in EWS, sounds to me like their bikes suck. Not a Specialized fan as you can tell, lol... Hey Specialized, suck it! Moon
  • 6 2
Rude needs to come over to the UK to do his training, then he might be a little less upset when the trails get soggy.
  • 4 0
I heard a rumour that one of the rounds in 2023 will be dry, fingers crossed.
  • 3 0
EWS is doing a great job for MTB. The races are so exciting and the trails so nice and gnarly. I would love to see this kind of rad and gnarly tracks back to WC Downhill...
  • 2 0
True, some WC DH trails have been mellowed out, but it's because many of the competitors complained at how dangerous some of the sections were, some of these same competitors are now racing Enduro without any complaints at how dangerous the trails are. Have you ever seen or ridden the Mont Sainte Anne WC track? The EWS trails are not as gnarly as the gnarliest WC downhill trails especially considering the speeds that the DH racers are pushing, no comparison. Why do you think old retired DH racers are doing so well in Enduro but can't even place in the top 30 in WC DH races?
  • 4 0
Would be super awesome to get raw coverage for hours. Just RAW!
  • 4 3
14 minutes, are you kidding me. a professional event ends up with a total of 14 minutes of air time. And that 14 minutes takes three days to get up loaded. I mean is that honsetly the best they can do? Lame
  • 1 0
Is that a remain of Mark Scott`s brake pad at 8:33? Big Grin
There is a lot of raw footage of the race on Cyclops MTB Tasmania YT channel. Check it out! www.youtube.com/watch?v=be7oBaPBkHM

 Unreal video !!!!
  • 1 0
Compared to all the footage and media coverage for EWS round 1 this was kinda weak. I suppose it helps that Rotorua had Crankworx happening at the same time.

I am just watching thinking, this would be sooo much fun to ride......in dry conditions.......
