@Tsoxbhk: And behind 2nd the gaps are even bigger! Did every other elite woman stop multiple times to check out various lines on the track or was Rach the only woman who made it down without a gnarly crash?
Timed training insights: - Thirion can probably be in the podium on Sunday - Brosnan is damn consistent - Hill is up to speed but probably will be outside the top 5 - Gwin is way down there but he can still win it (he has proven that before) - Minnaar, Smith, Marcelo can mix it up in the podium
I've become a fan of his since I broke my navicular bone. In the doldrums of my injury last year I found out that he suffered a similar injury. So we're basically bros.
Although we all realise that timed training doesn't really count for much, what this does give an indication of is that a certain Mr Hill looks to be up to speed. This is good.
Maybe, maybe not. You just never know what went into these times. Are the guys at the top up to speed or are they simply the ones that really tried hard, or maybe on such a greasy track they are just the ones that managed to stay upright for a full run. You just can't really make judgments based on looking at a time sheet.
@sino428: Indeed, although historically Hill doesn´t put much effort in TT. So it may be a good indicator that he is up to speed. I sure hope it is as I would love to see him back on that top step...
Like Peat, he's not ranked high enough to receive the honor of a timed run (only Top 80). Like you, I think Slugger and most of the other Brits will be on point for this one.
That's a good question. Given how small the ladies fields usually are, I wouldn't be surprised if they all can get timed. My assumption is they cut it off at 80 for the lads because there's usually so many (>130) and it would become a logistical headache to time everyone.
As mentioned in comment below, I think these tracks are getting (or have gotten) so brutal, there's just not many lasses out there willing and/or able to make a go at it. Heck, look at Rach - she's over a minute faster than 2nd place, and I think its likely due to the other ladies trying to get their wits about them on this slippery beast. I recognize its only timed practice and the margin of victory (assuming she wins) will certainly come down. Although I will say my personal fave Hannah seemed to have this place dialed last year before she stacked it up on her race run - but it was bone dry then.
@jackalope: That's a way. Eventually they'll have to go down there anyway (twice provided they qualify) so you'd say they could just have a go while it doesn't really matter. But it is their call, obviously. I've to admit I just can't name any other female racer who's going to compete there. Tells a bit of the (lack of) attention I've been paying and possibly also about the amount of exposure these ladies are getting. Or well maybe Jill Kintner, would she be racing? Then again she doesn't seem like the kind who'd shy away from a tough track.
@vinay: Whole different issue, but I expect that there simply isn't much factory support for the ladies, even for crushers like Jill. My theory based on little or no fact is that manufacturers aren't expecting to sell any meaningful numbers of DH (and maybe even "enduro") frames to the fairer sex, so they don't offer any meaningful levels of support for DH. Certainly sucks for someone like Jill, since she recently demonstrated she can smash DH with the best of'em at Rotorua.
And now that I think about it, I don't see Casey Brown on the ladies timed list, so maybe I'm wrong and they don't all get timed. Hmm...
@stacykohut: Unsurprisingly, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about in regards to the number of ladies and perhaps there is a limit to how many they time (or I suppose some just don't opt for a timed run)
Oh boy. Let the fun begin! As someone who is knew to following WCDH, I am stoked to see how much time is shed between these practice runs and the real deal.
if you look at the races before, gwinn is always not on top during pratice runs. he keeps his secret lines hidden until the race starts then you will see him fly.. which is very smart in my opinion
Seeing how timed training means everything, I'm surprised too... I really am surprised that he is in the top 20 during timed training on a wet track seeing how it will probably be drier on race day! Time to gwin!
@DublinBiker1: WTF is this? WCDH story telling time. Gee; I do not like boost hubs and Sram, I do not like them Gee I am. Gwin and Bruni together; We do not like boost hubs and sram.......
@Jaromi15: It's the James Stewart (Eh...old Bubba) effect - Don't quad the un-quadable jump until the main event when it's too late for everyone else to figure it out.
Not a bad run in the top 20 considering he was riding backwards with no chain, no front tire, while while eating a ham sandwhich and hit a 3 pointer from downtown.
She probably will. But those times up there offer no insight into who is fast or not. As only she seemingly bothered to do a proper run without stopping to go over lines and check things out like everyone else did.
Hats off to the ladies tackling this course. I'm always impressed with their ability to handle the physical demands of modern WC tracks, but I think this course especially is pushing their envelope given how slippery and ragged it is.
It's just practice but everyone else in the top 15 are absolute shredders that will probably be in the top 15 in qualifying and during the race. Judging by how close all the times are, and the riders that are in the top 15, I would say that Loris already is looking good for race day. I understand that we cannot predict results 100% with just timing, but there are definitely educated guesses that are possible with this info. What are the chances the top 15 were all taking it easy and all came in with such close times?
And Loris moved up to 9th in qualifying! Top 15 were virtually the same in qualifying and timed training. Practice IS a good indicator of race results. Only 3 of the riders that were top 15 in timed training did not make top 15 in qualifying. Similar order too. Most of these guys go all out all the time.
@ReformedRoadie: Sure, but "only" a minute faster than the next rider. Safe to say Manon wasn't riding at her full potential. It isn't a race run, very possible that she stopped at some point.
- Thirion can probably be in the podium on Sunday
- Brosnan is damn consistent
- Hill is up to speed but probably will be outside the top 5
- Gwin is way down there but he can still win it (he has proven that before)

But I love surprises. Cant wait.
