Male Athlete of the Year Winner

Choosing one man to rule them all is never going to be easy in as diverse a landscape as the MTB Kingdom. Pinkbike's in-industry poll brought three nominees to the table - two downhillers and an enduro rider - all at the expense of a freeride, trials or cross-country star. Determining these front-runners was as difficult and confusing as ever, but among all the potential candidates one rider stood out, in our eyes the undisputed champ... Perhaps doing enough in just 3 minutes and 34 seconds of the season to stake his claim as the male athlete of the year, the award goes to the freewheel marvel.... Aaron Gwin.

Earth-shattering talent and ground-breaking pace on a bike harnessed for a third time to produce a hat-trick of overall World Cup titles. With 2011 2012 and 2015 trophies already in his cabinet could Aaron Gwin be one season away from snatching the wins record from Minnaar

Aaron Gwin

They say 'begin as you mean to continue' and that's exactly what Aaron Gwin managed in 2015. Coming out all guns blazing at Lourdes for Round 1, the wizard with the striped sleeve put the fear into the competition from the off. Obsessively standing at the side of the track throughout practice in an apparent bid to stare French rocks into submission, he appeared to unlock its secrets, section by section, just by looking. At Fort William, despite the severity of the Highlands wind and rain, Gwin managed 2nd place, garnering enough points to steal the leader's jersey back off Bruni who had pilfered it away with his qualification points. Heading south to the Alps of Austria, another top performance was expected despite his enduring curse of component malfunctions on the Leogang mountain. But what we got wasn't a brake failure or another blown tire special; it was other-worldly. Perhaps even embarrassing...

Was Aaron Gwin now so good his performances could actually have a negative effect for his sponsors? Would kids everywhere break from the shackles of pedal power and cast their rear mechs into the nearest dumpster? Would we next see Gwin destroy the field on a 1987 hobby horse with a loose bearing? Thankfully not, but his next win was also an intimidating demonstration of power and skill combined and all on US soil. Wearing the leader's jersey and in front of swathes of party-mad fans, Gwin's four second sweep was borderline frightening, a deadly mix of Olympic BMX style aggression and near mogul skiing techniques to navigate the burliest sections.
Today AG was bested by Brosnan by a minute 0.17... The question now is exactly how far from his version of full gas was this afternoon

The American muscle then wrapped the title fight with one more victory in Italy without seeming to break a sweat, neither from the physicality of the world's most technically demanding track or the psychological strain of the 2015 trophy on his shoulders. Riding his first World Cup as recently as 2008 and already the proud owner of 10 wins, Gwin took 4 more victories and a third overall series title to his name this past season. Charging ever closer towards Greg Minnaar's 'Greatest of All Time' record in only half the races, you have to wonder if he's capable of leaving the kind of mark on the sport that could never be replicated.

Here's to another good one for the Temecula man with a love of ice cream, Ford Raptors and travelling at inhumanly high speed on two wheels. $500,000 says he can do it all again and heck maybe add the rainbow stripes to the mix. Congratulations, Aaron, you are Pinbike's 2015 Male Athlete of the Year.

Before all the negative comments kick in, give this guy some respect. He's been totally dominate this season after completely lackluster season before. Religious views aside he definitely deserves this award, so unless one of you has won four WC rounds in a season, including one without a chain, maybe you should give him the credit he deserves.
  • 96 7
Why Tea? Nah seriously, he is a class. I saw him on the bike and also among fans. I also saw other riders and only few are as kind and humble.
  • 139 9
religious views should have nothing to do with mountain biking.. leave it be
  • 29 7
When I would ride as fast as Gwin I could start to believe in god and be sure it's for the better
  • 50 47
I am a reasonable human being. I believe in Science. Now... some dude thanked God for something and I am loosing my pussy all over it for months to come.
  • 23 2
I have absolutely nothing against religious beliefs, only mentioned it as it seems to be a massive sticking point for some people unfortunately.
  • 100 4
If you can watch Gwin race, all of the incredible feats he pulls off, and still don't like him because he talks about God, I think you might have issues. The dude is a stud. Who cares what he believes.
  • 34 2
finally, PB is spot on. No arguments here.
  • 11 5
The guy has killed it. I'm the farthest there is from advocating the Christian thang but this guy won a world cup with no chain; regardless of affiliation you won't see that again. Ever. Combine that with his ever possible winning chance and dominate season, it's hard to see this as not deserving. Ever race he was in was "Will Gwin pull it out?" more times than not - yes. Huge props to a guy on the top of his game and I'm a more direct fan of Minnaar or Josh or Atherton but you diminish their results if you don't recognize what Gwin did. As Trump would put it " It's huge and great".
  • 23 6
If Gwin was gay, peeps would be screaming and neg repping for bringing up his life outside of racing. For being an intolerant asshole.
  • 10 4
 ^^^Owlie...preach it bro. No doubt.
It's the new "tolerance". As long as you don't say something that offends my views.
peace sir.
  • 10 2
I'm a non-practicing Atheist and I can get past the religion - congrats dude!

I live in a city that prides itself on celebrating diversity (just don't point out that anyone's different).

He's not even religious, it's all a big gaff that just kept building momentum. I heard one time someone tried to talk to him about Jesus and he said: "Woah, church man, easy. I'm trying to get my ride on, wig wog." Or, something like that. Anyways, Gwinn seems like a stand up dude and is an incredible, indelible athlete and is an inspirational inspiration.

@owlie I'm not sure if I got what your saying but I understood it as your basically saying if gwin was gay, people would hate him for revealing his sexuality??
  • 30 2
@pigitt77 no, that isnt what im saying. Its acceptable to bash on a guy for being religious, but if you bash on a guy for being gay or black or whatever, then youre intolerant.
Tolerance needs to be on both sides of the isle.

Does PB have such a short memory that they forgot AG placed second overall last season ('14). If that is what qualifies a mediocre season then your expectations are bat sh*t crazy.
  • 13 1
 sign me up for mediocre!
  • 5 1
Aaron Gwin is world class! I once asked him for advice during a race which he openly help; even though I was racing the in same class.

Religion is poison in society. If people actually started thinking for once humanity would advance faster than ever before. For a world that relies so much on science we need to stop believing in imaginary friends.

In my books you can be a fan of the rider regardless of his views; if you're a fan of the person both on and off the bike, religious views and other aspects of the guy are fair game.
  • 5 0
In most books out there, if someone keeps on losing his sht because someone thanked God once, then he is a lunatic, no matter if he likes to think about himself as an atheist or Jehova witness.
  • 4 0
@trumbullhucker55 I'm sorry but your comment makes no sense at all. Are we considering mtber's as professional athletes? Ever watch the NFL? NBA? Hell even tennis players point to God (or whoever they believe in) after every point. PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES across the board praise Deity all the time. Get over it. Respect the athlete, ignore their views--it'll make you a happier person.
  • 2 0
@reignonme I am pretty sure that's exactly what trumbullhucker55 was saying.
  • 2 0
@ridehard84 I could have misread what he wrote--wouldn't be the first I've done that. Seemed to me he was upset that an athlete has a belief in God--which who freaking cares. Just respect the athlete and get over it. I am sure he has a hard time watching anything with sports cus it's like prayer circle central.
  • 2 0
Yeah, I am pretty sure he was meaning exactly that.

It's funny you say that @MTBrent. When I think of CRC and Gwin's history, your comment makes a lot of sense. CRC has messed up almost every single order I made (out of at least 10), things missing or in wrong size.

I was going to say if there was a runner up it'd def. be Brandon.
  • 22 6
It probably wont go over well on this site, but Nino Shurter should have won., He won the world cup. He was on the podium for all of the races (3 WINS, 3 SENCONDS). Plus, he won the world champs. That's hard to beat.
  • 6 1
I believe that wins are not the only thing that can make someone an amazing athlete, Brandon did't even podium at rampage but his line was crazy. Plus his film segments in Revel and Unreal are insane.
  • 4 2
It's not about Gwin's race record, it's about something unbelievable happening. History was made and may never be repeated...that's special.

@packfill, if nino could pull off an XC win chainless, no one would talk about gwin ever again.
  • 5 0
@packfill PB's foundation was laid by Canadian freehuckers so you're right, it would be pretty ridiculous for Nino to win. You have attracted the closet WC XC fans with the +10 though , I'll give you that.

Gwin sponsorship press release taking waaayyyyy too long. I just don't care now.
  • 10 8
Pretty sure he will ride for yt industries. They are ging to do a cooperation with Audi, Red Bull and KTM in order to get the money he wants.
  • 12 5
Yes I understand that, I don't live in a cave, but there has yet to be a formal release. At this point all the speculation is tiresome, especially since we mostly think we know what's going on. I feel really indifferent about it at this point and I think others do too so I wonder why it is taking so long. Almost makes me wonder when this deal was actually made, if it's made at all yet, otherwise why wait? Because they are shooting some rad clip of Gwin ripping a bike.... I think the missed the wave of interest so to speak. let's just get onto racing now.
  • 5 0
I totally see where you are coming from, and to an extent I agree, this deal should totally be done by now. On my end though I haven't lost interest and I think whenever the sponsor is announced that will still be an exciting moment. The dullest it could be is if he signs for YT, even then we still have the chance to learn if its going to be a multi member team and exactly whats going down. For all we know maybe Zink or another YT rider may try to get in on some world cup action, or it could be another team completely, still not sure why this isn't out yet.
  • 5 0
If he doesn't end up going with YT, then the annoucement will blow you away and Gwin is pretty damn good at knocking us all out. But if it is YT then, yeah, a giant yawn will ripple through PB, which is why I doubt YT.
  • 8 3
I think he may be riding for Karpiel or... Antidote bikes...
  • 4 1
KHS. Him and bingelli are bros
  • 15 4
This is getting ridiculous. He isn't leaving you hanging, his getting a contract and releasing details is not for you. He is just getting his contract sorted like every other rider. i am not sure if you are aware (with all your whining) but he was trying to get a contract done with Spec and that fell through not that long ago, so he then had to find a new team and organize the details. And seeing how picky he can be those details are probably pretty thorough. Quit your whining and get a life.
  • 1 0
 Hehheyeah...
  • 2 1
Look peeps we know the bits that matter to us already: He's confirmed he will be riding this year, and its for a new team. Any press release now just tells us the logo on the shirt, and thats not so interesting.

Can't wait for the new season, and to see if he can compete for the championship on the new bike. Bring on Lourdes!
  • 2 1
@mackienz Never said he's purposely leaving us hanging, just that he missed maximum stoke. No really a big deal, all in fun.
  • 1 1
Im sure it takes a few days at the bank to see if YT can refinance their company to pay him
  • 1 0
For the record, I was more or less stating that I was surprised that Gwin hadn't tied it up yet because its getting late in the signing season. I would like to know personally as well though, I am not going to lie about that, there is about 3 feet of snowbase here and more coming so asides from my roadbike and this website I don't have a whole lot to keep my bike stoke up.

Met Gwin in the Angel Fire 2014 lift line during national championships. He seemed pretty focused on the business at hand but still able to smile and let my buddy snap a pic. I think that was the weekend right after his tireless run in Europe. I don't care what bike Gwin rides, just keep riding them fast. Bring that World Championship home while you're at it too!

To everyone whining about the god thing. Next time you're on the WC podium and getting interviewed, you're free to thank whomever you want. Nobody should care one bit. Just for the sake of it I hope Gwin is actually trolling all of you.

My point is that it is no different- but an alarming portion of the world base their opinion of a person on false perceptions of their faith. I can't blame some for wishing religion didn't exist but I honestly think we'd find something else to argue about. It's a shame so many appear hard wired to fear people who are different.
  • 1 0
I think we could potentially be arguing the same thing.

Who's riding do you most enjoy watching? Gwin! His style and flat-out aggressive smashing is a pleasure to watch. Plus, he seems like a genuinely cool dude.

I'd love to grab a beer with him while he drinks a Capri Sun juice bag!
  • 6 1
Never really liked Gwin but 2015 was his year and we can't doubt that. I hope that he will continue to ride like that also in 2016.
  • 3 0
I don't get how people can't not like a DH racer. What's the most interaction a fan has with these guys? You see what, a 15-30 second interview with them after the race? That gives you all the indication you need to pass judgement? So a guy says he wants to thank God for a victory? Big deal. He isn't asking you to convert to Christianity. From what I can tell he is polite with the fans and thanks them for going to the races?

So many of you say you don't like Gee because he looks like he's pissed off? Maybe he just looks that way naturally - I know I do, but in fact most of the time I'm feeling just fine. Did Gee piss in your Wheaties or what?

I got news for you, not everyone is Josh Bryceland.
  • 1 0
I'm just going to leave this here (fittish.deadspin.com/motorized-doping-explained-your-guide-to-the-weirdest-1756435151) and ask one question. Has anyone seen a video him going around that tight flat corner before the straight? It was in the race coverage for most of the other riders but not his.
  • 4 2
Winning a bike race without a chain is very good. Personally I would probably stop as soon as my chain broke, but he had the forethought, mindset, and the ability to continue.
  • 2 0
Met Gwin at our local WA DH race....chatted with him for a few and he was super cool. His successes over the years, chainless win, and that amazing flat tire run definitely puts him in #1 for me.
  • 2 1
Gwin probably deserved the win but didn't Nino win 3 world cups get second in the others 3 and win the world champs. I know its xc bit he is a really talented all round rider and if someone did that in dh they would have won or got close. You would think he would at least get a nomination.
  • 2 1
If all he's asking for is $500k then give it to him I say. Somebody has to move the sport forward for these athletes. This sport is like the old days in baseball when guys like Yogi Berra had to have a winter job. We've got guys cleaning the redbull hardline that have to wash windows to make ends meet. It's wrong no matter how you slice it. However I agree that despite Gwinn's amazing DH abilities he is a polarizing figure. It's not so much the religion it's all the baggage that goes with it. At least in this country. Religion and politics in this country are very closely tied and somebody who is that openly religious will clearly get placed in the group of ultra conservatives, the tea partiers, Muslim haters etc. Wether or not those are Aaron's personal political views we don't know. It's just that by broadcasting his religion so loudly he's going to have himself lumped in with those groups. So... That is why he's so polarizing. I don't see any of that from any other rider. Minnar is certainly as professional and reserved as Gwinn but doesn't polarize folks. Neither do the likes of Peaty, Atherton etc. But yeah, as a rider hands down Gwinn shreds.
