New Uphill e-Mtb World Record Set in Davos Klosters

Worldrecord in a this beautiful scenery

Words:

Ralph van den Berg and Max Chapuis have set a new world record for ascent in Davos Klosters. Inspired by the ‘Keneveresting Challenge’, the pair covered a total of 14,623 metres / 47976 feet of altitude, travelling uphill on forest roads and downhill on biking trails in a 16-hour feat of strength.

Juice for the day

Ralph van den Berg and Max Chapuis set out to claim their world record at four o’clock in the morning. To ensure they had the maximum amount of daylight, they chose 21 June – the longest day of the year. Everything went to plan, with no breakdowns along the way. Chapuis and van den Berg managed a total of 14,623 metres / 47976 feet of vertical ascent within the allotted period of 16 hours. A new world record. And biking destination Davos Klosters was the ideal place to do it. ‘We wanted to cover as much altitude in as short a distance as possible, so we didn’t waste too much time,’ explains van den Berg. Claudio Caluori's ‘Keneveresting Challenge’ was the inspiration behind this world record attempt. Back in 2020, the former downhill professional covered 13,500 metres of altitude on the ‘Specialized Kenevo’ e-bike – which helped inspire the challenge’s name. ‘Everesting’ is a trend where bikers tackle 8,848 metres of altitude – the height of Mount Everest.

Returning to the world record: ‘We cycled the whole day on the same “Specialized Turbo Levo”. We were able to climb over 1,500 metres of altitude with a 700 Wh battery in power mode,’ says van den Berg. But they still needed proper battery planning. According to the rules, the service team was not permitted to accompany the cyclists as they went in pursuit of their world record. Instead, the team had to wait at a fixed location: down in Klosters at the Gotschnabahn. This was the only place where batteries could be replaced or repairs could be made. In addition, only commercially available electric mountain bikes using normal batteries and capped at 25 km/h were permitted for use in the world record attempt.

Second consecutive world record in mountain biking
Ralph van den Berg was already no stranger to world records in mountain biking. He broke the singletrack world record in Davos Klosters with Christoph Fässler back in summer 2021. Together, the pair covered 20,100 metres of altitude downhill in 16 hours, beating the previous singletrack world record by 516 metres. And best of all: they never covered the same trail twice. ‘I wanted to show that a father with a demanding job can still enjoy a quick adventure now and again,’ explained the 38-year-old. With its 700-kilometre singletrack network, biking destination Davis Klosters was the perfect stage for this feat – living up to its slogan ‘Sports Unlimited’.

100% agree. “Record” will be broken by you grandma in 5 years when 3x as powerful pedal motorcycle, I mean e-bike is out

Ha! In a "16 hour feat of strength". Get outta here.

16 hrs of riding, even on a e-bike, is a an impressive day for sure. But pursuing a world record for climbing on an e bike seems bizarre. Makes me want to take my POS Camry out to a local hill and see if I can claim the “world record” for meters ascended in one day.

How do you feel about land speed records?

@kleinblake: the airplane I was on last week reached 38k feet in about 10 minutes.

Well call me old fashioned but personally I liked world records better back when there were no e-bikes and they were all about that guy who ate the Cessna and the guy with the 18’ long fingernails.

I have thought long and hard about why devices with electric motors are so great for so many things, but just don't seem to make compelling sport. I don't have a concise answer, so I'll leave you with a list from mister records himself, Ashrita Furman: www.ashrita.com/records

There’s really not a better way to start your day than a fresh bowl of aluminum for breakfast.

For comparison to a (let’s be honest, superhuman) on a normal bike, Ben Hildred did 10,832ft more gain in about twice the time.
  • 17 0
From what I saw in this video, Bens climb was steeper and his descents were much more difficult.

I love e-bikes. I think they are ridiculously good fun, and allow you to go further, faster, while still having ridiculously good fun. But this record is utterly pointless. I may as well set a new world record for "longest someone left the hob on". It might well be a record, but why bother?
  • 37 1
Thats not an entirely fair comparison as you are completely neglecting the human element. It would have to be more like "longest someone left the hob on while standing there watching it"

Since ebikers love to say it's just another version of a shuttle or a chairlift, this has me wondering: Is there a known record for most vertical ascent riding a chairlift in one day?
  • 5 0
I know it's not a record but I managed 14k feet at the Trestle bike park when they were installing the newest gondola
  • 6 0
This is the thing, because the uphill, while important, is not that interesting. In fact we have invented an entire competition, Enduro, where we don't even time the uphill part.

Next year's headline from these guys: New uphill world record set on gasoline-powered mountain bike (that looks suspiciously like a Honda CRF450).
  • 9 0
Friendly reminder, if the "record" you set was on a bike with a motor, nobody gives a flying f about it.

How many calories and how much was the electricity bill?
  • 4 1
 700wh battery = .7kw . 1500m per battery = 9.4 batteries . 9.4 x .7 = 6.82 KW. No clue where this took place, but i pay .11c per kw. So about .75 cents in electricity.
  • 4 0
@Howieday91: The calories are much pricier. It's most cost-effective to ride an Ebike than to power it yourself...
  • 8 1
The battery-assisted antithesis of the origins of PB. The Anticycle has arrived.

E-bikes have a purpose this record does not
  • 7 0
You should be ashamed of yourselves for posting this

I can ride my regular mountain bike and be happy with that. Some people need more, they can have it.
  • 7 1
Maybe the bike/motor should hold the record instead of the rider.
  • 2 0
Wow! I'm inspired to see if I can best this with my bike, it's a Triumph! I'm pretty sure my heated seat is gonna make all the difference while I'm digging deep, exhausting myself twisting my right wrist beyond all normal limits.
  • 5 0
Of course it was in Davos...
  • 4 0
This is absolute b0ll0cks. No company makes an ebike that lasts that long without breaking down.
  • 5 0
Almost as dumb as bikepack racing..
  • 1 0
I'm not saying this isn't an athletic performance, despite the e-assist, I am saying we can not judge HOW MUCH of an athletic performance it is, because of the e-assist. That makes this whole thing pretty lame. Congratulations with your 'world record', guys.

Their cables appear to not be routed through the headsets.

 YAAAAAWWWWWWWNNNNNNNN
  • 4 0
Could do that in 8hrs on le pleney lift, its electric too you know..
  • 2 2
What I personally do like is the planning and forethought that can go into a ride like this. Not that I’m going to hop in a ebike and take 30 batteries and try to beat the record but it’s the planning I love. I have a personal aspiration to ride haliakila in Maui from Paia to the observatory on a fixed gear road bike. I’ve worked out the gear inch that I will be able to manage for the duration of the climb then flip the wheel for a free wheel down hill. It’s dumb but it’s about the planning kinda like this adventure. Good for this group to plan the odd adventure.
  • 3 0
All this ebike effort, it's wearing my battery down...
  • 2 3
It’s a respectable feat , it’s like riding at a bike park for 16 hours straight with the chairlift assist except you actually pedaled your bike up the mountain, kind of, except your pedal strokes were assisted electronically
  • 2 0
This is stupid as is the uci supporting ebike racing. As good as they are there are lines to be drawn…
  • 2 0
How many battery watts did they burn? This is funny. lol.
