Results: Qualifying - Val di Sole World Cup DH 2019

Aug 2, 2019
by Ed Spratt
Vali Holl starting the day off right with a cup of style.

The results are in from a tricky qualifying session. A massive thunderstorm rolled in just as the Elite Men's qualifying was starting. The top 60 all came down the course as the rain kept falling and the gondola was shut down due to the lightning putting a hold on riders starting their runs. Everything was quickly back up and running so the final riders could complete their runs.

Pinkbike: "The results are in from a tricky qualifying session. The rain started falling as the elite men took to the track and it was truly sodden by the time the top guys took to the course"
People: "Does it rain over there?"

So it is dry out there?

@Zack38: looks like hard conditions, our boy Max actually 53rd with 38seconds back..
great runs from Bulldog, Amaury and Laurie under these circumstances!

So will this be 2019's first real test of the revised protected rider qualifying and start order system. Seems most of the fast guys qualified but there are some unknown names in the top 20. Hope they get their chance to race live on TV rather than get bumped off it by a household name on a factory team.
  • 22 1
Yes, and Joe Breeden better be last man down. Rain or not, that's racing and he'd be robbed of it if they change the start order, make the broadcast longer if they need to.
  • 4 0
In a nutshell, what is the protected qualifying / start order system? Or should I say, how does it work?
  • 12 1
I long for the old days of Freecaster showing quali, all the field and Warner getting on it.
  • 4 1
@GrandMasterOrge: the rule clearly states top 5 qualifiers go last, from 5th to 1st, regardless of the effect of protected riders. There's no reason to think breeden wouldn't go last.
  • 3 0
@tobiusmaximum: Protected riders are top 10 from 2018 standings and top 10 riders from the current year standings not already protected from 2018 overall standings. Start order is reverse qualifying results; fastest qualifier goes last.

Only the last 20 riders are shown on the live feed, which this week excludes a lot of big names.
  • 1 0
@JoshParsons87: They usually show many more than 20?
  • 1 0
@JoshParsons87: so forgive me for being dim.. but does it mean the protected riders are automatically qualified? I’m guessing not. So my next thought would be that they are automatically racing in the top spots. At which point that would mean there are between 10 and 20 riders already on tv and between 0 and 10 riders that can muscle in on that?

Sounds like madness to me. Break the pool cue and see what happens, a la ‘Batman returns’ tryouts.
  • 1 0
@tobiusmaximum: Yes protected riders automatically qualify for the finals. And they usually show 30 riders on the feed I believe. The way I understand the rules now is that you take the top 5 fastest qualifiers plus all the protected riders and create one pool. This pool of riders are last down, in reverse order of qualification finish. Then the remaining qualifiers fall in line next, also in reverse order of how they qualified.

So at worst, the top 5 fastest qualifiers are guaranteed to be the last 5 down the hill. In this case it looks like guys like Reading, Pardal, etc are going to get pushed back at start around 25th-30th.
  • 1 0
 @jay-me: I absolutly agree!
  • 1 0
@thesharkman: I haven't actually read the current rules so thanks for that, I was referencing Losinj 2018 when the fastest qualifier was bumped down due to the change of rules to fit in with the broadcssy/narrative.
  • 1 0
@jay-me: supporting the grass roots racers.
  • 1 0
@sino428: don't you have to at least roll out of the gate in qualies to race in the final, protected or not?
  • 2 0
@BenPea: yes, protected riders just need to go by the gate.
  • 1 0
@BenPea: yes. They are automatically in the final regardless of what place they finish in qualification. But they do have to at least start a qualification run.
  • 1 0
Will it be Masters, Shaw, Fearon as the first 3 out of the gate?
  • 18 3
Joe Breeden gone from not qualifying in Les Gets to qualifying 1st in VDS, regardless of weather that's quality
  • 10 0
At least Intense will have someone riding in the live feed.
  • 3 1
@chriskneeland: hopefully he'll be last to go too
  • 2 5
@mtbcyclist: quality? he literally needs an act of god to even qualify lol all this shows is that is must have rained REALLY hard after his run lol
  • 1 0
@nismo325: haha I know that he isn't normally top 10 or even top 30, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he's P1
  • 3 0
@nismo325: That just dumb. This is a super tech track (finally) that plays to a different skill set. It is not one of these super wide and boring courses. He apparently showed up with the right set of skills to handle what was there. I, for one, am happy to see new names up there. Bummed Mulally could not carry some momentum in. This seemed like it was his sort of track.

Will brands like fox, tld start making denims for mtb? Seems to work even in the rain, and it has decent pockets and is kind of strong for crashes. What else do you need?

Hard to justify $200+ for some riding jeans if they look the same as the one I buy from Old Navy. Have to somehow Enduro-ize them
  • 3 0
@plyawn: motorcycle industry has all kinds of fancy denim they charge hundreds for, I’m sure they could do it. I never ride in cotton.
  • 1 0
Denim in the rain sticks like a bee atch, too absorbent. In the dry, sure.
  • 8 0
Was that the first intense that qualied first this year ?
  • 4 0
Regardless of the rains - those guys who are never up top, are in a place they've been dreaming of! This mix up should make for some interesting runs.
  • 4 3
Anyone know what’s going on? Looks like they stopped qualies after the top 60 or so. Living timing feed stopped at rider 63 and no one has gone for about 15 minutes. In next to start it looks like they are rerunning riders 35-41 and then going back to 63, but it’s been on delay for a while now. Injured rider on track?
  • 5 0
Adam Rodjek (rider no 42) was a DNF so maybe; hope he's OK...
  • 9 0
@Longroadtonowhere We're hearing it has been red flagged, some riders are prepping to head back up for re-runs

Edit: Riders back on track now, looks like six re-runs then riders 60+

There’s been a heavy thunderstorm and the gondola got struck by lightning, so they’ll be sending the people down now, who are already up now & and might continue sending people up as soon as the gondola is working again...

Just here to register my outrage that the UCI result sheets are not searchable text, even if you download the PDF. I actually had to carefully look to see that Loic Bruni was 18th. How am I supposed to procrastinate efficiently like this?

Good to see Brook on the pace considering he took a bit of a flyer in practice. Keen to see him wrestle the snake and uh... win
  • 4 1
Still excited to see some many random names it’ll be interesting to watch
  • 4 0
Good for them, but I hope the fastest guy wins, not the luckiest. That being said, tomorrow is another day, and most of the quick dudes made it through to finals.. I hope for some constant conditions for tomorrow! But it will be exciting for sure!
  • 4 1
@likehell: the fastest guy always wins
  • 1 0
unfortunately it will be a low qualified fast racer taking fist spot then we will have to watch a bunch of riders finishing like 5 seconds behind.....

I just missed it this morning when I arrived up at the start hut but saw him taken away by chopper, he apparently went wide at the first road gap. Saw an online article translated from Italian saying that there was "nothing serious" and he's just been monitored but I'm not sure exactly what the injuries are, it looked serious?
