Video: Dream Builds - A Classy Chrome Commencal Meta TR 29

Mar 17, 2022 at 11:05
by Beta MTB

Our first Dream Build wasn’t on YouTube. It was on paper. Beta Gear Editor (and former World Cup mechanic) Ryan Palmer, whose corrugated aluminum lair you’re about to step into, first made fantasy into reality on the printed page back in 2013, where a few lucky, probably undeserving magazine editors got to build their perfect bikes. But Dream Builds are about the journey as much as the destination, so the whole process is artfully documented by our Video Editor, Satchel Cronk. Please have a seat, relax and settle in for Beta’s Dream Builds.

For most of us, choosing the parts for our Dream Builds was a surprisingly easy process. There’s an endless world of options out there, but once you have a vision, everything kinda falls into place. We have a goal in mind, and we’re familiar enough with that endless world of options that we know immediately which rear shock will achieve that goal. Or which tires or which handlebar. But the thing is, the bike we end up with on the other side is often a bit of a mess. You buy a bike out of the box, and the carpet will match the drapes, as you might say. But we’re spending all this time getting custom stickers, black spoke nipples, or the XO1 group with the red accents, not the gray accents. It takes some effort to make a Dream Build look like all of its pieces belong together.

And then, there’s Anthony Smith's Commencal Meta TR. Beta’s photo director put together this mirrored masterpiece to represent the ultimate in high-impact mid-travel fun, and it looks like it was carved out of platinum. No stickers, no accents, just raw, polished perfection. Not all dreams have to be in color.

And of course, Ryan Palmer was there to make it into a reality. Palmer’s workshop, as always, is as carefully thought-out, painstakingly organized, and as full of Apple products as a Genius Bar. If you borrow a 4mm, make sure you put it back.

Commencal just makes some of the cleanest frames on the market. People always talk about body lines on cars, the frame lines on the Meta are one hunnit. I love me a good Meta build

Too bad they eat coil shocks for dinner.

@nubstorm: Good thing is has the right shock for the job

yea dont let that deceive you, there made of aluminum so they brake easy. Carbon is way better, a lighter bike is a faster bike

@dualcrownstrider: This bike, stumpjumper EVOs and a couple other bikes with strut style yolks add a bunch of leverage to the damper shaft which causes them to snap shafts, wear out glide rings prematurely or come undone. This is why PUSH will spec a big fat steel shaft for these bikes. I've seen this frame eat an EXT in a matter of weeks. The e-bike version is a much better option of this frame.

Fox is the only one to officially talk about it, but i've seen problems with all coil shocks on these bikes.

@z-man: Many thanks. Currently considering this frame and will likely run an air can.

@pinkerclone: lol this dude coming with the 1950's insults. Pump the breaks homie
  • 1 0
 @nubstorm: Really? I haven’t had a problem with mine.
  • 1 0
@z-man: I have heard people where getting sent the ebike link when they had problems
  • 3 0
@z-man: I would not put Meta and ST into one basket, Meta is literally 2x stiffer in the rear. I run RS coil for the 3rd season right now on a Meta and have zero problems with it. Recently did a complete shock rebuild and bushings were like new. Maybe it is a problem for heavy riders.
  • 4 3
 @pinkerclone: is that you Waki?

 @z-man:
I run a CC dbIL Coil on this frame. To be ahead of potential issues, is this considered to be a shock warranty case?
  • 6 0
@nubstorm: I've had 4 Meta AM frames all different years. Not a single issue with shocks.

@lkubica: Thanks, for a moment I was worried.

One would think that an employee can user their salary as they see fit eh?
  • 12 0
@Caiokv: Think he insinuating beta paid for the build, not the employee.
  • 7 0
Pretty sure the parts are either free or if they paid for it...it was at cost. All they got to do is to contact the part/frame manufacturer and propose that they want to do a build for their publication.
  • 3 0
Since the polished signature edition of the Meta is in stock in their store since yesterday, I’d guess at least the frame for this very timely released video wasn’t too expensive…
  • 2 0
@FuzzyL: The video was made 3 months ago. Though you are correct on the article. I give the Commencals advertising team credit though. Better than buying a lame add and spamming it everywhere. I would much rather see cool shit like this.

I know it's not big or clever to make a whole deal out of someone's name so apologies in advance, but Satchel Cronk really sounds like something @henryquinney would come up with in one of his "Things That Didn't Happen This Month" articles.

And he needs to use that weird metal-plate multi tool with all the hexagonal cutouts that comes with those cheap bikes.

All for this. The fork would have to be installed backwards of course. Complete build done with an adjustable wrench as well.

Looks like Super Ground up front and Super Trail out back which makes a bit more sense.
Initially only trail was available in Soft but I think Soft/Ground is now working its way onto the market

@nozes: yeah I thought the same but i cant figure out why so many people compliment it and want to look at it closer or snap a picture. It's so eww though I agree.
  • 1 0
@therook1110: I love polished metals, I dont need to take a picture, but I would probably check it out.
  • 1 0
@therook1110: It's the gold on chrome that doesn't do it for me,but to which their own,I guess.
I would change the gold for purple or orange and it would be way better. For me.
  • 1 0
@nozes: I already have a bike with ano purple and blue so I had to go a different route. Plus I have a DJ that's got orange ano parts, a dh bike that's green and red, a road bike that's red and black, and an enduro that's sunset red and blue. I had nothing left other than customizing a bike by polishing the heck out of it. I see you're about coordination of colors too so I figured youd appreciate it but I cant please everyone.
  • 1 0
@therook1110: Well it seems we're on the same page, many bikes with different color schemes is my scene also.
I've got 7 bikes,4 have colored components:
Titanium hardtail with anodized red
Steel HT teal color with anodized orange
Aluminum black HT with anodized purple
And aluminum black FS with mate green.
Make it your own, that's the way!

Perfect timing, just got an email from Commencal today to say my TR29 is on its way. Went for a quick after work XC loop and cleared some fallen trees and branches and come home to this. My build is not so flashy but for sure I have some stuff to add and swap out waiting in my workshop and I will upgrade it as it needs. I honestly prefer it that way.

...And on this day, we the PBers, commented on the BikeMag/Beta dream build... May ye component spec and polished raw material selection henceforth spread joy and light across the comments section...

dang, I knew there would be some shared topics between Beta/Outside/Pinkbike but I didn't think they'd literally recycle content they're already listing.
  • 2 0
I love the bike and the build video(i have a polished one myself).
Only thing is it would be much cleaner with a black seat and grips! The grips and seat dont really color match.
  • 1 0
Nice!!! I’ve had a couple Commencals. Last oneI had was a Meta. Turned out to be a total lemon but Commencal weren’t interested in fixing the problems that came new with the bike so never again for me. Lovely build there though.
  • 6 2
My one and only gripe is using a seat post shim on a dream build...
  • 5 1
I noted that. Also a reverb on a dream build? Tho those stem spacers are dope. And have to bow down to using calipers to space the brakes from the end of the handlebars!
  • 4 1
ee-wings install instructions say ti-prep for for basically everything I saw him put grease on.
  • 1 0
Why would you ever run a coil shock on a bike with less than 150mm travel? Only because the color was (kind of) a match and EXT does not make an air shock but was kind enough to sponsor the build?
  • 4 2
The attention to detail is awesome and the finish is mega, but it’s not chrome.
  • 2 0
is it the ryan from the bible of bike test videos? always wearing flannel shirts and drinking a can of beer?

I always wanted to take the nice picture of the components but I was never patient enough. As soon as I got two pieces that go together, I put them together.
  • 1 0
does anyone lnow, why he would put the parts in a drawer? I mean, once you have the parts, you unbox them, and immediately start assembling the whip. innit?
