Accessible by over 9.8 million people on a daily basis, the Santa Monica mountain range extends through the heart of Los Angeles County -- twisting through the stars' backyards in the Hollywood Hills to the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Can prime mountain bike terrain really exist amongst the concrete, gridlock traffic and congestion?

 The cinematography was pretty cool but I though the continuous helicopter footage was more enjoyable. Its not often you get to see top quality continuous footage of a top to bottom run like that. Very cool.

It loks a lot like the trail where I raced DH for the first time in 1991. No front or rear suspesion and cantlever brakes ( and a smooth trail like this one)

 @poozank I don't think it's related to the renegade(smaller and has asymmetrical knobs), it looks like a completely new central pattern for the big S. They've been good at recreating well liked/performing tread patterns for their team riders, hopefully this one comes in the control sidewall. I'd run one on the rear for sure, as it will certainly be cheaper than the alternative.

 Keene has been riding an Enduro 29er for a while now. He may be fast but hasn't really featured in any EWS races.

 @GTImkIV - I don't think so…. right at the 46th second you can see the front wheel is off the ground and therefore "true", meanwhile the rear tire bottom is out of line with the front tire, but halfway up the tire it is in line with the front. Later in the same second you're right, the rear tire slips and is tracking on a different line. Could just be an optical illusion, but there is a split second between 0:45 and 0:46 where that rear wheel certainly appears to be flexing hard.

 Have you ever seen slo-motion footage of what a bike goes through underneath a World Cup level rider?

There's a reason the bikes of elite level riders require so much maintenance. That tiny little bit of wheel flex in this video is nothing.

This is what the detractors against larger wheels on mountain bikes are left with..."Oh my god...did you see that tiny little bit of what looks like a wheel deflecting in that video of an rider going Mach Banana and getting rad on a 29er?"

 you guys ever followed someone riding an Intense? The rear wheel can move side to side by what seems like a foot. One time I mentionned it to my buddy and he checked and said, nope everything feels normal - that's just the way it is. Evetually I got used to that when I was riding behind him (which is most of the time because he's fast... a fast gorilla on a flexy bike!

Also, if not a blacked out Rock Razor, then I'm hoping something tough from Specialized. Tougher than GRID, but lighter than SX...

 It is indeed a specialized slaughter, new 29x2.3 tire. The rock razor, is a 2x3 block pattern, this has a 2x4 pattern. Also the side knobs are the butcher vs. the squared off block of the RR. I uploaded a pic from the bike check for further info.

 I was able to meet Curtis in Winterpark, CO last year for the Enduro World Series. I had no clue who he was at the time, but I road the lift up with him and chatted with him a bit around the village (I actually think there is a picture of us on the lift here on PB), and i have to say, he was one of the coolest, down-to-earth, and professional guys I've ever met in the bike scene.

 Basically had the same experience with him at Winter Park. Seemed like a really cool guy. What is stunning to me is that as fast as he is, there are many other Enduro guys that leave him in their dust, time wise.

A lot of people are talking shit about the trails in Los Angeles. I would have to agree with them.

There are A LOT of options out here in LA, as people have mentioned and I've found quite a few good trails, but the problem with LA riding really isn't the quantity or quality of the trails it is the location. Obviously all the trails are in the mountain (hilly-really lets not get carried away here) ranges located in sort of a semi circle around the major Los Angeles cities. The problem here is the traffic. As everyone knows, LA traffic is horrible. About as shitty as it gets really. If you live between 8 and 12 miles from a trail head it will take you 30+ minutes to get there anytime of the day not counting rush hour. If you work full time 9-5 then you'll be heading out in rush hour and it could take you 45min-1.5hrs. I live in Culver City which is 12 miles away from the trail head that Curtis is riding in this video and right now in rush hour traffic it is a 57 minute drive. You can do 12 miles in under 57minutes on a bicycle EASY. I've been thinking about just starting my ride from my house and having 80% of my mountain bike ride be on pavement just to get there faster than driving.

The craziest thing I found about this video was the 100% lie they tell in a statement on the Helicopter POV page. The title of the article is " 5 minutes from Downtown Los Angeles, a pro mtn biker tries to outrun a helicopter" hahha the f*cking trail is 20miles from Downtown LA, no where in the world is 20miles 5 minutes away by car lol in fact in current traffic it is 1 hour 17minutes away haha.  I guess it really does depend on where you live in LA. I live in the north SFV, and make my commute into Ventura County every day. Backbone, Sycamore, Rocky Peak, Viper, Pinetos, Mt. Wilson/El Prieto, and all of the trails within a few biking miles of Jedi are accessible to me within 15-20 minutes of my home, work, or along my commute.

 Come on!!! no body needs to be jealous of L.A. Riding! It stinks! Without a helicopter and a red bull cinematographer this trail is really boring... the way they edited this they could have made it look absolutely sunning if they had him ride down the 405 freeway a mile to the east... Its like one of these stars without makeup things... really...

 L.A is a mountain bikers heaven! perfect weather all year round and hundreds of trails within a 20 miles radius. from the 60 miles BB, Simi Valley, Oak Park, Las virgenes, Malibu, Altadena, Sylmar and Santa Monica mountains.

 the weather is great sure, but that's about it but the rest is BS...
A trail like that might be good in LA (compared to freeway in rush hour) but in reality its not even close to good. If it where somewhere in Colorado, BC or the Alps you would not even consider it for the uphill...
And what so great about seeing the mountains and knowing exactly its "just" 20miles but you cant go because traffic is so bad it would take you hours... And once you get there you have to negotiate with hikers all the way down and chose your line for the smallest amount of horse crap...

Yes sure there is worse places to ride mountain bike, not much though...

 was in socal 3wks ago and couldnt make a couple of rides happen with a buddy from LA cuz of traffic. midweek and spring break didn't help, though. I'm just happy when i get to leave texas. Atleast you can actually drive to a mtn for a wknd! i forget how to use gravity if i dont leave for cali or seattle.

 michibretz, you got a point but i live in the west San Fer valley. You are right Sulli dont worth the drive from redondo and the climb, you might as well drive to OC. i saw some great trails in Palos Verdes. the rest i mentioned are far, full of traffic for you. Redondo Beach is more of a surfer town then a biker. the anger in your remarks, is traffic anger, i get it, it is bullshit!

Seriously, though, how can you idiots judge the thousands of miles of trail in the SoCal area based on one visit, one ride (or a failed attempt at it), or one video of a single trail that happens to be accessible to a helicopter with a camera? I'm not saying it's a Squamish or Denver, but the sheer number and variety of trails within one hour of anywhere in LA make it one of the best cities to live and ride. Jedi, frankly, isn't even on my radar as a good trail in LA. It's popular because it's easy for large numbers of people to access, even after work.

 Prodigy1 you are right, whenever i read "LA is great for riding" frustration takes over... I do get that LA county has a lot of different corners and if you are lucky enough to work and live next to one of the few trails that might be cool.
I have lived in a lot of places but LA doesn't make in my list of top riding locations. not even close.

San Fer or Simi is a different story. I rode Rocky Peak last weekend and it took me 2.5hours home... my average speed on the Freeway was lower than my average speed climbing the fire road up to where the single trail starts...

Palos Verdes is really beautiful for sure, you could do a stunning video there too if you had a good editor and cinematographer. Heading towards the sea the views are really nice.
But for legal riding there is very few trails left and the fees for getting caught on one of the hiker only trails is ridiculously high. Hardly any of the trails are more than 200ft vertical an hardly keep you busy for over a minute going down....

 I think "mountain biker's heaven" may be a bit overkill. I've lived in a bunch of different places where there are hundreds of trails right out the garage, much less within driving distance. Many of these places also have perfect weather and the places that don't just make for more fun riding!

Have you ridden the San Gabriel Mountain trails (Angeles National Forest)??? There are some long gnarly descents up there. All legal. There is even a paid shuttle available, if you don't feel like climbing.

I agree the trail in the vid isn't all that. I'm sure they picked it because it's on a ridge line, which is easy to film with a chopper. Curtis sure rode the hell out of it though. Now I have a good reference for my skill level.

 Much L.A. hate here! Lets not forget the 30-40 minute drive down south to the thousands of miles of Orange County trails and now we have a decent always improving bike park in Big Bear, not a bad place to live and ride at all!!!

 @ sOOper-nOOb: Yes i do ride Angeles National Forest. Its impossible to go after work with traffic from the south bay. And even on the weekend going this direction is quite a bitch and you easily spend a coupe of hours in the car...

SoClaMX: Big Bear is usually 2 hours plus from South-West L.A.. the trail areas in OC at least 40 minutes if there is no traffic which pretty much never happens. I am from Europe originally and that much driving we don't call "local" we call that going to another country or traveling abroad!
Funniest thing is if people tell me Mammoth is is close.... with that much driving in other parts of the world you can cross multiple countries...

 Neg - repped this last comment by mistake. Sorry! I've heard the same thing about driving distance from people on the east coast. I think we western-staters don't mind driving just because of our geography. Comparatively, cities are few and far between. Mammoth offers terrain unlike any other in SoCal and is totally worth the 4.5 hour drive.

scvkurt03: I am driving mammoth every second weekend from bike park opening weekend in spring to closing weekend in fall every summer since i moved to LA. I have never made it in 4.5 hours on a Friday after work. not even Close.

 Saw Curtis yesterday climbing up sulli fire road, talk about the devil. No picture taken just a yell "CUUURTIS!" took me 20 minutes drive from work. Hit Cab, Sulli Ridge Nazi Camp and Panic down. including ride to and go home under 2 hours. MTB Heaven if you live in the right spot, but i guess its everywhere, you always like better what you cant get, that's for sure. i would love to ride riverside, fontana, temecula, laguna nd lake elsinor. but its too far... you wont catch me driving there even if i have a day off. pedalling a fire road beats a 5-6 hours drive round trip.

I hear you man. Even if you hit the trail early on a weekend, you get traffic on the way home. I can't argue. Driving sucks. Add to that the foot and bike traffic that is increasing on the more accessible trails. SoCal has gotten really crowded.

 The trails can be fun, this one is pretty damn boring though, just as everyone is saying it looks.

It takes a long time to get to a trail head even though they are relatively close to all major cities, and the a lot of the trails are mainly fire roads with one or two optional single tracks that last maybe a mile just like the trail in this video. Its a 4 mile fire road with a .9mile single track section that is optional, and completely flat (as in no techy sections or anything to ride over) but it is covered in loose rocks and some parts are very steep so, that being said it really shows how good this dude is to be bombing on steep loose trails like this one.

Great Southern California riding is located where I grew up, Orange County. Some the best California trails are down there. Oddly enough it is located about 45miles south of Los Angeles but only takes about a 45minutes from Los Angeles, so 4 times farther that most LA trail heads yet you can get there faster. Tons of professional riders were either born there, moved there or travel to for off season riding. The Athertons come down all the time, I saw Steve Peat down there a few months ago, Brain Lopes lives and dominates everything down there and Curtis Keene is down there a lot as well. Kyle Strait lives down there too.

So if you're coming to Southern California and want to bring your bike along, I would say LA could definitely be a good time, but if you can spare a longer (miles) drive than absolutely make the trip to OC

 My home trail! Yes it's straight but most of you that are used to spongey, loamy hero dirt would piss your pants at those speeds over Jedi's razor sharp, rock hard, slippery shale.
You have to earn it and there are surely better trails in the LA area but this one is pedal distance to Red Bull HQ so I'm sure that had some influence.
But LA sucks for riding. Don't come here. P.S. That was shot in "mid-winter"Smile

 You guys should check KENNETH HAHN Park located by Baldwin hills The locals have build up nice jumps and massive Burms is short but sweet with varies technical off trail. This guy that calls himself Mongoose man 310 said he is the godfather of that place . Check it near culver city between La cienga and la brea . Hope this helps on the LA riding

 i live across the street from Kenneth Hanh, a few months ago the bulldozed every single one of those man made trails, jumps, berms, and all. They made it a paved road, so no the park is just a giant paved walking park.

 LA is not where the good SoCal riding is. Just look at where Richie Schlayer stays in the winter - Laguna Beach in OC. San Gabriel Mtns near LA are awesome, but actually not in LA like the Santa Monica Mtns are. We've got great riding, just not in LA.

 I love my Enduro 29er. Its the most well rounded bike I've owned as far doing everything from climbing to DH. (2010sx trail,2011 sx trail, 2012 enduro 26, 2012 Commencal DH supreme). And i have ridden quite a few other brands as well. I will say though that having a DBair definitely helps it on the DH. I seriously never thought I would buy a 29er until I rode the bike.

 jedi is above sullivan canyon but below the ridge line. you have to get to the top of the ridge to access jedi.

 Yes. this is a great video. please film all of our so cal trails for us and post people riding on them that fast. at least we will have those videos to remind us how good the riding was before all the trails got closed. Some of you strava'ers need to realize that if you are going to blast down trails and cut every corner, break every rule of common courtesy and be too cool to put a bell on your bike we are going to get our trails shut down. i'm assuming this video was shot when people were making sure there was no family w/ a bunch of kids hiking up but you can bet that some meat head is going to go and try to duplicate some of that speed and maneuvers on a sunday afternoon and run at least 1000 hikers off the trail. if you must go this fast to enjoy yourself please do it on closed courses (Mammoth, BB, Northstar, etc. or way in the backcountry with a bell on your bike.

 if you negative prop a thread, you should at least offer an intelligent counterpoint. Maybe you can make me see the light. I love DH & Enduro (or whatever they call it now) but there is a time and place and if you're not on a closed course and going even slightly fast, have a bell on. Strava seems to turn even the most mild mannered courteous people into complete idiots with no regard for anyone's safety or the long term use of our trails. Hummingbird in Simi Valley has been devastated by corner cutting and the ranger is on the verge of shutting that down. it'll just take one hiker mamed and a lawsuit to seal the deal.

 All of GTA5 is loosely based on LA and California. There are some exits off the highways in the game which are almost exact replicas of what's in Cali. And it has mtb!
