Not sure if the Flatline is quite in the classic category as they were making them in 2015 and I still see quite a few people rocking them in lift lines still. But it was a great bike! When they came out I bet they were 50% of the bikes in the Whistler line up.
I had one back in 2014ish and had a ton of fun on it.
2015 is ancient history, it was a land before AI, before Russia had formally invaded Europe and where the US and UK were still invading the Middle East, before the end of the EU 38, before a mass pandemic swept the world killing millions and spawning a race of even simpler humans called antivaxxers, a simpler time, a time before the big orange turd, a time where only-fans not only didn't exist, but also didn't sponsor mainstream enduro racers, a time when Greg Minaar and Peaty still raced WCDH, a time when Warner commentated on Red Bull TV, a time where lilt existed.
@browner: Well, AI officially started as an academic field of research in the 1950's, Russia invaded Crimea in 2014, there are still thousands of American soldiers in Iraq today, and Minnaar is still racing WCDH, but I agree with the the spirit of what you're saying
I agree! I had a flatline. Was on the heavier side of the spec, but it was undestructible. I think a good Enduro 29er is now way faster than that old 26er boat anchor!
@browner: "before Russia had formally invaded Europe" ... if you are talking about continental Europe Russia is also part of it, if you are talking about the European community it is inaccurate
@JiminOz: Irrelevant! The only thing that matters is that they didn't think what they were told to think. Imagine how dangerous the world would be if people just went around making their own decisions all the time. People are stupid!
@Peskycoots: as already sayd i'm not rooting for anyone ... there are no good guys and bad guys in that matter and Europe shouldn't have poked around. For the umpteenth time Europe is bowing to the wishes of the United States which took the opportunity to place missiles under the Russian borders knowing clearly that this would create tension. I repeat, the only sad thing is that Europe lends itself to these projects. But it's not a problem for Great Britain, for a long time you have chosen who to stay with only if the sea separates you.
@blacktea: you seem to have your facts confused with your Russian propaganda, the important bit is that Russia invaded a sovereign country to annexe it by force, killing lots of civilians in the process. They can be considered « bad guys »
@christinachappetta: Ten years old is not considered classic. It's just old. Nothing wrong with that by the way, but the term classic really is for older stuff. My '94 mtb is classic. 26" wheels, cantilever rim brakes etc.
@Peskycoots: Pretty much any legitimate examination of the russia/ukraine situation will tell you it's not quite as cut and dry as that. The Ukrainian population are the innocent victims of nefarious players on both sides. Russia is corrupt as f*ck, Ukraine is corrupt as f*ck, USA has been fanning the flames for well over a decade. This isn't as simple as the childish "goodies vs baddies" storyline being pitched by the newspapers.
@gabiusmaximus: the process by which the got there is of course a long and complex one, as presented by at least the European press, but… the Russians have still invaded a sovereign country to annexe it by force killing lots of civilians in the process. In this specific war the Russians are the baddies.
@Peskycoots: Thats a reasonable statement, but I would add that there are baddies on all sides of this one and not many real goodies of note. And the poor civilians stuck in the middle of it all are the ones paying the price.
@gabiusmaximus: the real difference is that the Russians could end this tomorrow by going back behind their own borders whereas Ukraine is fighting for its right to exist as a country and a culture. On a macro level it’s clear who’s good and who’s bad
@gabiusmaximus and @blacktea - you are either extremely ignorant (after 518 days of the hot war!?), or a scum of the earth who help spread russian propaganda. Go Zaluzhniy! Slava Ukraini, geroyam Slava!
@Peskycoots: both sides rushed too far ... now it's hard to put things right without losing face. The most incomprehensible thing is that Europe for the umpteenth time becomes the probable clash between the USA and Russia ... again? Weren't two world wars enough?
@blacktea: both sides did not rush to far comrade. You invaded another country, most of the rest of the world agree that’s bad and you should leave. Except for those well know bastions of morality china, Iran and North Korea
@Peskycoots: Russia behaves no more and no less than the USA ... I want one thing, I'll take it. I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying that we won't get out of this situation anytime soon. Economic sanctions don't work, Russia organized itself immediately to solve the production problems, in my opinion they could continue to hold their position for many years while Ukraine is consuming men and means by raising the debt it contracts with the countries to enormous levels half the world. Will he get her territories back? Perhaps. Will Ukrainians be poor for the next 100 years? Yes definitely yes. In any case, mediation is the best way while instead Europe continues to send armaments that crash into Russian defenses. Europe is paying for a policy submitted to the USA for the umpteenth time.
@blacktea: you have a 20th century soviet mindset, it’s not about the USSR v the USA. Don’t forget the uk was at the forefront of military support for Ukraine and the biggest supporters of Ukraine are the ex soviet country’s that know how shit it is to be under the soviet yoke. You’ll have to get over your USA obsession lad
@jomacba: some of us have skin in the game so maybe instead of wheeling out some internet dog whistles from the safety of Canada you could leave the grown ups to talk
They were a gazillion times better than the cantis before them. I was much lighter back then and have never been fast but they were enough for me, and to be honest Maguras hs33s were as powerful as a lot of the cheaper discs, just without the rim denting safety margin. Or am I imagining it all?
@in2falling & @christinachappetta (showing my age here) I raced the Kaimkaze at Mammoth in the mid 1990's on a Foes with V-brakes ...freeway speeds down a gravel fireroad with cliff dropoffs halfway down. Mental. How most of us didn't die is a miracle. I can't imagine the heat in the rims going into the tires/tubes at the time. That said, @johnny2shoes is correct, a Shimano XT V was WAAAY better than any canti from back then
I did more than one lift-served session on my 1999 Specialized FSR Sport with V-brakes. It required two, sometimes three fingers to get the necessary power to slow down. When you only leave a pinky on the bar, you’re really living on the edge.
@CSharp: Why not own one now? There's still plenty of them for sale, ready to be rebuilt into very nice allround bikes. In fact, I am in to rebuilding nineties mtb's, and in 'my scene' I see so many GT's that I've grown tired of them.
@WhateverBikes: I currently love riding my Stumpy FSR right now. As a backup, I have an old lightweight aluminum Devinci hardtail that I'm rebuilding. If I was to look for an aluminum GT frame, it has to have rear IS disc brake.mount, not the v-brake mounts. I also have too many bikes right now and not enough time to tinker around, even for my current ride! Maybe one day in my retirement, I'll go search for my dream GT frame!
My ATX1 had Middleburn cranks and chain ring, PACE Monster forks, and a gold metallic flake planetx saddle and of course a standard shock other then that wheels, brakes and most other stuff looks the same.
Remember crashing at a midlands super series race and jumping back on the bike for all the crowd to start shouting don’t sit down.
It was only when I finished I realised I’d ripped off the saddle hull and the rails were bent and pointing straight up,
I still have my 2003 Trek Fuel 80 and still use it, frame broke back in 2008 right above the bottom bracket but got a new front triangle under warranty back then, has 65 mm travel in the rear and a 80 mm front fork, still looks great, I changed the original v-brakes and replaced them with hydrolic disc brakes, also replaced the rear shock with a 2004 Fox Float R (propedal) and it is such an efficient bike to pedal compared to my current Fuel Ex. Such an incredible bike.
2nd the appreciation for the stunt. That man did a great demo of how to pop a flat takeoff too. Imagine the 2nd takes it would require to record multiple riders.
I had the early version of Giant ATX ... Boxxer 151, 150mm. rear travel, there were v-brake attachments on the rear, first Formula brakes (those that had a screw to adjust the distance of the pads)
I don't even know why manufacturers bother continuing to design and redesign bikes with incremental changes, when everyone knows the Giant ATX was the pinnacle of bikes that rode like absolute shit, but looked cool as fuck. Nothing has come close to those two all important factors since.
No KONAs? 1999 Sinky with Creamsicle paint job, No Azonic bars, Love seat or Sun Doublewide rims, Nokian 3.0's? Guess I'm just too old or partial. Mountain Cycle San Andreas?..... Cool bikes though. Shout out for the Titech Hell Bents!
Cool to see the hand brazed Richey still going and as an e-bike. When you bought that bike in 1985 you could have legally ridden up the singing pass hiking trail.
Don’t you guys love it when like every other f*cking week someone talks about “classic” and “old-school” on here and acts like it’s the first time and somehow that it’s cool and fun all over again?
I think there is a lack of bikes that really excite, beyond the performance they have. Current bikes are like cars… great performance, great safety but they no longer excite
I wrenched on so many of that gen. Complete noodles. Not sure if it was accidental but the bearings dropped in the frame without a press and (per Trek’s tech info) “held” with green locktite. Had to let it dry 24hrs before riding and just hope things weren’t misaligned enough to break things loose.
@CSharp: That saddle is formed to his butt over decades of riding, and you can be sure it is more comfortable than any 3D printed 400 dollar saddle being hyped now.
I had one back in 2014ish and had a ton of fun on it.
You're now on the right side of history with this one dude. Thanks!
My '94 mtb is classic. 26" wheels, cantilever rim brakes etc.

Stevie's part of course...but Shandro's segment still stands up today. Legend.
