Chromag Stylus from Phil Town

Steel is real, and that's even a more powerful fact if we talk about an all mountain/enduro hardtail.

Race Face cockpit with 760mm bars and the shortest stem available from the Canadian brand.

Production Privee Shan n5 from Odin Woods

You don't see one of these frames on a daily basis. Just a small number of companies offer full suspension steel frames, and this one comes from Andorra.

Some big bearings for the Shan.

Hope HB 160 from Nigel Madigan
NZ Enduro 2019 bike checks
A pretty unique build for this colorful HB 160. At the moment, this frame color pattern is not offered by Hope.

Guess he's always keen for a post-ride ice cream. Lorrain Truong rides with Max.

Nothing like a hard and struggling privateer lifestyle with a custom Hope frame and Enve wheels lol
  • 85 8
It looks like someone vomited all over it.. The Chromag on the other hand, now that's a sexy bike.
  • 81 1
Well at least Enve is helping with the struggling part.
  • 5 0
Wow this bike looks a lot like a cereals box of lucky charms
  • 51 1
Neither suspension nor drive train are electronically controlled. What a peasant.
  • 16 0
I think we're all being a little harsh, his privateer strife is plainly evident in that pedestrian non-eleven six rear suspension... #HisStruggleIsReal

enves them selves are very cheap, its the chris king hubs that make them pricey... right?
  • 3 0
Just think they got their priorities straight!

@larsmeier: The only people that think Chris King hubs are what make Enve wheels expensive are noobs. And vice presidents of Enve.

@fartymarty: Now fellas, normally I get on board with all the shit-talking, but this is someone's bike we're talking about. He was probably excited to see his steed included in this article! Insult a man's wife, sure. Bang his mama, no problem. But by golly, leave his bike alone.

Oh behalf of my compatriots, I'm sorry, Mr. Dentist. Looks like a mean machine.

As far as I was aware, Privateer means you're not a sponsored rider, not that you have to ride a piece of shit bike.
  • 5 0
@Clarkeh: it’s all in good fun son...
  • 1 1
@rezrov: it was probably a bit harsh but it could look a when lot better with less colour and less decals. It's a nice build and bike it's just the colours.

Loving the dude with the hardtail. Curious to how well he did compared to the full sussies
  • 59 0
Hardtail and no dropper. All he needs now is to get rid of the gears, and he'd be a real hard OG.
  • 3 0
@TheR: Agreed, how tough does this guy need to be!!
  • 4 0
Yeah man that’s sick does he compete right alongside the full sussers?
  • 47 0
 11:01 min - 16th @ amateur men
would have been 29th @ pro men
  • 5 0
He did pretty well considering 16th in his class. Around 30th overall i think if i read it corrwctly. I wonder what he would have done in the dry.

@zeusdreadbeard: or on board an actual enduro rig!
  • 10 0
@zeusdreadbeard: Or with a good rear tire!!?!?
  • 44 1
Fixed seat post on a hard tail, now that’s how you race enduro tup
  • 32 6
That Chromag has just reminded me I’ve left the gate open
  • 4 1
I want the stylus. I'll close your gate on my way by.
  • 16 0
With all these AM HTs on the market Enduro should add a HT category
  • 8 0
Come to Finland, we had that for years!
  • 11 1
"Privateer" bikes with someone working for Santa Cruz, someone with a non-production frame and someone who has several sponsorship deals - you might as well have called it "bikes from people we like and who we want to get noticed"?!
  • 14 0
 That Chromag is sweet!
  • 14 0
 Shann looks so good
  • 6 0
MC Shan and Marley Marl is really only blufflin'.
  • 5 0
 @TheR: The bridge is over.
  • 1 0
@FatTonyNJ: Haha! Some will get it. But I saw Shan, and it was the first thing I thought of.
  • 10 0
Are you sure Max Schumann would count as a privateer? A lot of sponsoring from nearly all brands he is using? Not sure he is not paid by SC.
  • 8 0
What the shit! whos big brass balls are racing a hardtail in an enduro?
  • 8 0
and if thats not hardcore enough...do it without a dropper
  • 7 2
I can do it for you blind, if you don't care about my result. Just not with Hans Dampf in the back... sorry anywhere.
  • 3 1
@funkzander: Racing without a dropper is no big deal. There is a weight advantage, one might only get taxed if there are longer pedalling sections. That and foam inserts, two things that can be perfectly done without.
  • 5 0
That Hope.... it's like mixing a brownie sundae with baked Halibut, and dowsing in a fine whiskey. I like all the parts individually (except the Enve's) but put them together and its just terrible.
  • 8 1
Someone get this man a dropper post
  • 3 0
He’d probably kick ass with a dropper..
  • 4 0
@spread1: You think he races with the post up???
  • 5 0
last time odin rode a shan gt now he is on the darkside aka a full squishy bike
  • 6 0
 That Shan is sick!
  • 4 0
Those turbine cranks are well loved. The crank arm and self extractor cap have become one. Truly a work of art
  • 3 0
Loving the steel bikes. Keeping it real and avoiding the black plasticy stuff.
  • 4 0
Sick to see a hardtail representing!
  • 4 0
All the hardtails comments, yet they won't do a real review of one here.
  • 5 2
Loving the Stylus, but dubious about the use of a non-dropper post...
  • 4 1
That is a ton of spacers on top of the hardtail fork.
  • 1 0
If I haven't learnt much with bikes one thing I know is never cut the steerer tube to optimal. Your next build or trying to sell the fork will tell you why.
  • 2 0
Nice to see some non mainstream brands out there, than the usual plastic fantastics.....
  • 4 1
Holy that steerer stack with the garmin on top is hilarious
  • 2 0
Chromag makes a 40mm rise bar that would nice on that Stylus(and eliminate all those headset spacers)
  • 2 0
Ya man, my thought on the spacers too - get a proper riser, 6 and 9 degrees... flat bars are so hard on the wrists
  • 2 0
Total respect to the guy with the Chromag, and Viking Bike Special Prize to Odin Woods and his sexy sexy Shan N°5 Smile
  • 2 0
Those 2.4 Michelins on the Bronson look beefy!
  • 4 1
 That Chromag is sick!
  • 1 0
JPS livery steely full squishy... Momma roll over me with that wagon wheel.
  • 3 1
The Chromag is the real stand out .
  • 2 0
That shan no5 is a dime piece
  • 2 0
The hope looks like it ate too much pizza.
  • 1 0
Are steel full suspension bikes rare because frame flex is hard on the shock?
  • 1 0
So cool to see my old Chromag getting the use and attention it deserves!
  • 1 0
 Stylussssss.. stroll on..
  • 1 0
You do not need much dropper in Andorra
  • 2 0
 i love ice cream!
  • 2 1
 "Steel is Real"
How clever, never heard that one before.
  • 1 0
Phil Town, you rock my world ????????
  • 1 0
No idea why i have question marks there by the way
  • 1 0
 #wowzers
  • 1 0
 Will ride for ice cream.
  • 7 8
Nothing like millennial priveteers now a days. $$$ bikes.
  • 12 1
Millennials don't make enough money to be able to afford bikes like these.
  • 11 3
@Almazing: Don't need to make a lot when you have no bills living with your parents at 30.
