As far as I was aware, Privateer means you're not a sponsored rider, not that you have to ride a piece of shit bike.

@funkzander: Racing without a dropper is no big deal. There is a weight advantage, one might only get taxed if there are longer pedalling sections. That and foam inserts, two things that can be perfectly done without.

If I haven't learnt much with bikes one thing I know is never cut the steerer tube to optimal. Your next build or trying to sell the fork will tell you why.

I don’t get the big deal about dropper posts. Many of us rode forever without one on gnarly terrain and were fine. Drop the post and go down. Stop and put it back up to climb. It’s an Enduro race, which is mostly descendimg anyway.

as long as it's truly race=down and transition=up. Some enduros have low grade/flat/uphill pedally sections on some timed stages.

Most enduro races involve at least 1 small climb or flat section on a stage. The dropper post is one of the best inovations to come to mountain biking

@oliofiat: I don’t know about that. I’d put disc brakes and suspension far above dropper posts. Riding with cantilever brakes and rigid forks...now that sucked.

You're both right. Bikes have come a long way. But during a racing scenario a dropper post can mean the difference of resting one set of muscles for a few precious seconds in preparation of full hammer on the next down. Might only make a second or even half second difference, but if you look at the time spread in this event, that's a big deal

A dropper is only for comfort. I'm pretty sure if you have a climb on an enduro race you will climb standing up. And if you don't have a dropper you get used to standing up while climbing wich can also make you faster.

@gdharries: I'd much rather ride a rigid bike with a dropper than a full sus bike with no dropper. Any day of the week. I'm not saying the rigid would be faster, but droppers add fun, and fun is good.

It definitely depends on where you're riding. For places with long ups followed by long downs, they're not as much needed. Where I ride it's a lot of 250ft climbs followed by 250ft descents, rinse and repeat. If I had to stop and put my post up and down every time, I'd be stopping 20-30 times a ride.

@cycleco: I ride my full rigid with no dropper pretty regularly. Given the choice, I'd much rather have the dropper.
