Unreal. The kid's been knocking on the door all season long and on the one day he needed to shine, he blazed! 11.699 seconds faster than anyone else!

Men's Top 5

1. Danny Hart
2. Damien Spagnolo
3. Sam Blenkinsop
4. Brendan Fairclough
5. Mickael Pascal

Spagnolo 2 Hart 1 and Blenki 3

Spagnolo (2), Hart (1), and Blenki (3)

Full results at bottom...

This year's World Championships downhill was all about who could handle the greasy mud on the super steep track at Champery, and all about Danny Hart! Marco Miliventi held the lead for quite a while as rider after rider struggled and crashed in the mud. Then Remi Thirion took the hotseat with a 1.9 second lead, look at the time! With rain pouring down, Brendan Fairclough put down an awesome run taking the lead by 6.63 seconds. Fabien Barel put in an incredible effort riding with 4 broken ribs to move into 2nd place in his last ever World Championships, he ended up 10th when it was over. And then came the rider that many were waiting for, Sam Hill. Still riding with a shoulder injury, Sam put in an amazing run looking so loose and picking singular lines that could have given him the win if he'd had the strength, but he couldn't manage better than 2.76 seconds back from Brendan and ended up in 7th place. Damien Spagnolo started his run fast, 0.8 up at the first split, and ended up smashing Fairclough's time by 1.436 seconds to put himself in the hotseat. Josh Bryceland looked liked he had an insane run going but he went down with a spectacular crash in the same place that Hill crashed in 2007, and unfortunately his bike tomahawked off the course and into oblivion, ending his chances of even finishing his run. Sam Blenkinsop made some mistakes at the top and was 2.65 back at the first split looking like it was all over, but he made up some incredible time at the bottom and even with a few more mistakes ended up only 1.29 seconds back to join Spagnolo on the hotseat in second place. After that rider after rider failed to put in a clean run as conditions seemed to get worse with the rain.

And then Danny Hart hit the course with just 4 riders left. An astounding 4.5 seconds up at the first split, he was pulling tear offs in places where other riders could barely even hang on. Up by an almost unbelievable 10 seconds up at the second split, he threw a huge whip over the jumps at the finish and he moved into the hotseat, 11.69 seconds up on Spagnolo. Could anyone beat him? Gee really struggled with his run and was 11 seconds back at the first split, and then crashed again and again to finish 52 seconds back in 52nd place. Greg Minnaar started off 9.14 back at the first split and was out of the running, leaving only Aaron Gwin in a position to take Hart out. Gwin was giving Hart a serious run for his money, less than a second back at the first split, but he crashed and got tangled up in the netting, leaving Danny Hart with the win by over 11 seconds!

The Americans are going to be gutted thinking that they are the best just cause Aaron Gwin has been winning alot lately, well it looks like they are not singing anymore aha, well done Danny, i havent seen the run yet but knowing how quick and loose he is already i am guessing he was on it like a car bonnet to win by 11 seconds.

Really... good job Danny! Well deserved win!

To all the Brits ragging about it... really? Must you?

And for the record, Gwin was on track to at LEAST give him a run on it.

World Cup = a SERIES of races, DOMINATED by one man.
World Champs = One race, one weekend.
  • 4 0
Fucking GUTTED i didn't pay to watch this!!! sounds like an awesome race!!! Awesome run Danny, hats off to you sir

  • 7 2
Troy brosnan should have raced mens, he would have come second.
  • 10 0

Really pierpoint? You can't just be happy for Hart and celebrate an amazing win by him at World Champs?? You have to try to instigate fights on pinkbike? You're classy.
  • 3 0
I'm totally astonished he won by 11 seconds. Everybody else was a second or so away from each other. To be 11 seconds faster than the next best guy IN THE WORLD on a 4 minute course is rediculess. Fairplay.

no doubt danny is a awesome rider but giving gwin shit for a 12th place is bullshit he was kicking ass all season and had a crash here after putting down a good run. respect to all the riders and thanks for a good season

I could not have asked for a better podium!
  • 4 0
that's amazing to say the least! and to repeat what everyone else said: 11.69 on such a short course in the rain is ridiculous!! I thought Gwin was gonna take it IF it stayed dry but I really wanted Danny to take it. Just amazing to see.

@Pierpoint33:you're right the Uk is the best at riding and the US sucks at riding. Is that what you want said? Now shut your dumb face and go back to playing with your legos!

Skierdude, i said nothing about americans cant ride and british are the best so read the comment and understand it correctly before you slingshot into me, you seem like a right wanker. Alot of the americans where saying that they are the best cause Gwin has been winning alot lately and all i was saying is the americans are not singing anymore because Danny beet him by more than 11 seconds and that is crazy.
  • 2 0
It doesn't matter what country they're from. A sick rider is a sick rider regardless and I always want the best guy on the day to win.
  • 1 0
@KURTSUCKS It looked like a tantrum but he was actually trying to hammer his brake lever back into place
  • 4 0
Pierpoint, everyone here has national pride when a rider from their country does well, EVERYONE. Deal with it. I see people from the UK boast, but you know what? I don't care it doesn't make me angry. I'm happy for Hart and the people who ride DH from the UK because it's a great feeling seeing someone from where they are from perform such an amazing feat. Why would I want to get pissy like you and talk shit and rain on their parade?

I mean how hard is it to celebrate an individual racers accomplishments without turning into an angry troll like so many people have been doing this season? Is it really that hard to appreciate everyone who rides at this insane level of difficulty without being a dick about it? Hell man, just be more positive.
  • 6 0
@togoodtodie: Us Brits are happy for Danny, and most of us aren't bragging but congratulating a fellow countryman, just as most Americans have been congratulating Aaron. I like to see any DH racer do well and show what's capable on a mountain bike. I have admired Gwin's performances all year, he has looked unstoppable, but this was Danny's moment, and he thoroughly deserved it. He's been knocking on the door of a win all season, and he picked the right race to finally get it, and in such a manner! I tip my hat to the lad, and I mean lad, he's top of the world at just 19.

Let's all stop bitching and just learn to admire some damn fine riding when we are privilidged to witness it, no matter what country the rider comes from.

Also, great rides from Fairclough to come in fourth without an ACL! And to Barel, went out in style IMO, four broken ribs, 10 years or so older than the young guns, and still got 10th spot, absolute legend!
  • 38 0
What is up with all this hating? Shouldn't this sport unite us all? Stop moaning about what language he speaks or what accent and lets all speak the same language...mountain biking!

Great run Danny super stoked for you! Well deserved! Smile
  • 7 0
Well said, theres already enough hate in the world. We are all on here for our love of bikes just because some ones favorite rider did not win, does not mean they should hate on some one who showed a commitment, desire and such a level of skill to rag a course like that only a few people can do.
  • 19 1
Absolutely. Aaron Gwins tweet a short while ago epitomises sportsmanship - "Such a sick day in the rain, stoked on riding, not stoked on catch netting gettin in my way! haha Huge congrats to Danny, good ride champ!"
I have more and more respect for this guy every day.

As cyrix says, it's nice to see people on here that can understand what this sport is. Let's try not to turn it into a game like football (or soccer) where the fans have a bad rep because of the way they treat other fans, they seem to forget that all footy fans love footy, and it's the same with mountain biking, we're here because we love to ride!

Although Danny has been getting progressively better all year which has prompted calls of a world championships win, I believe this is still has an underdog ring to it which makes it even better, well done Danny Hart!
  • 4 1
World champ title, not world cup title. Two different things.
  • 10 0
Hart was amazing - total talent - no one can say different - For all those who make comments on peoples nationalities and accents - you need to get out of the house more and be a little more worldly. These riders ride fast - not because of their nationalities - but because of their talent and determination. I'd love the guy if he was from East Bud F*ck - makes no different.
  • 2 0
 Simply put!
  • 1 0
 Well said!
  • 9 0
Congrats Danny m8,you've well and truly put Redcar on the map.The course at Champery didn't bother what technology was through at it,bike wise,it was and is a riders track. And as Rob Warner said "whoever wins on this track is the best downhill rider on the planet."He couldn't have been more right. You the boy,Danny.
And as for this accent bs,Danny Hart is the only rider on the World circuit, that i know of, from this particular region of North East England that we call home, so his accent is obviousley gonna sound unusual to some people,i'll bet you'd be hard pushed to find an English man who couldn't understand him.So enough bs and a bit more respect for the best rider on the planet yeah.

totally man, easily the best £13.50 ever spent. i was sweating. holding my breath and everything during danny's run. that run will go down in history for decades as one of the best ever. yeah, good clean runs win races...but that was just pure balls out way past the edge of sanity win it or bin it genius

go danny rat f*cking face hart

everyone who didn't saw it live missed the best Race ever!
it was worth every f***ing cent
  • 8 1
You were stoked to see Gwin fall! Having a little national pride is a good thing, but to wish harm upon another biker is just wrong. I could care less what nationality the winner is. I'm just loving the fact that the competition has been raised to this level, and that there are so many riders that have the skill and ability to win. It's much better than a few years ago when it seemed like it was Sam Hill vs. everyone else. Nothing against Sam.
  • 2 0
Sorry, that was supposed to be a response to Bennyy4x, but I posted it wrong...
  • 4 4
you "could care less" really? how much less?
  • 1 0
Less than you obviously! I think you misinterpreted what I said. I think it's great that he is British, and I think you should be proud of him. I look at all people, not matter what race or nationality as equals. I just root for whoever's personality and riding style I like the most.
  • 1 1
I think you misinterpreted what I said. if you 'could care less' about the issue of nationality then it implies that your level of caring right now is not rock bottom and there is some unidentifed amount below this e.g you could say my level of caring is now 1% but i 'could care less' if i cared 0% or you could say my level of caring is 100% but i 'could care less' if i cared 99%. both of these statements could be true given your originial statement so it leaves a certain amount of ambiguity. what im trying to establish is how much you care about the nationality of riders, given that your a yank i could have to treat any claim that you didint have any residual national pride with alot of secepticism.

what i think you were attempting to say is that you COULDN'T care less about nationality. however this is literally the opposite of what you did say. im not a pedant for spelling or grammar (obv)when it dosnt matter but when your literally saying the opposite of what you mean it gets confusing.
  • 1 1
Thanks for the lesson. You are right. What I meant to say was that I couldn't care less. I do not have any national pride and only relate to about 5% of the american population. I wake up everyday wishing I was born Canadian.
  • 1 1
then you have my full respect
  • 9 0
Hero Hart, fooking good win deserved it after a storming season. The boy is gonna kill it next season.
  • 5 0
Congratulations! Too bad we didn't get to see Miami Bryce make it the whole way down. Thanks to Danny for another awesome show. Val di Sole with the super sweet berm smash and this week with the most insane whip. You had me holding my breath on it, then letting it all out with a giant cheer. Huge win man!
  • 5 0
Jesus the kid smashed it! Riding lines that no-one else even attempted, taking tear off's of in all the right places, loose as hell and then a big whip at the end! Gwin was the most consistent and killed it in the WC, but hart put together the best run of the year on the hardest course by far. Boy got skills......... Congrats to Gwin and Hart. Epic season.

Can a carbon downhill bike be lighter, faster and stronger than the rest? f*ck no because Danny Harts pinned!!

watching someone's hard work pay off and thieir dreams come true. winning by almost 12 seconds? Insane! Pregnancy hormones making me cry before 8am watching his run. GOOD ON YOU DANNY! Enjoy every moment of your win.
  • 11 9
Cool that he won his first big race as a senior at worlds. I knew Hill wouldn't keep up with the young guns, his best days are behind him. Had Gwinner won it would have been the greatest season ever by a male, maybe next year if he continues to be the only one taking the sport seriously and training crazy. This sets up a good season for next year, but hart can't win on pedal courses. But a sick run, when was the last time a male won by that much, don't even know if nico ever won by that big of a margin. Look at Danny-boys average speed compared to everyone else, he was a man among boys, except he is the young boy. Look at those time gaps!
  • 7 1
The junior champ (Juniors raced before the track was completely torn up, but still Brosnan fits into second.)
1. Troy Brosnan 3:51.503

The Worlds Champ
1. Danny Hart 3:41.989
2. Damian Spagnolo 3:53.688
  • 8 3
Hill`s season back in 07 can be said to be better than Gwin`s one now even if he won the world championships.
  • 16 0
Sam Hill's still recovering from his shoulder injury and hasn't been riding the world cups in ages. He'll spend some time recovering in the off season and hopefully will be back healthy again next season. He's far from gone. And to think Aaron's the only one taking it seriously is just down right idiotic.
  • 5 0
Hill's still got miles in him yet, he just needs to recover from his injury and get back up to his physical peak. I hope he does get back to his previous form, and I hope the other top guys manage to step it up to Gwinn's level. If they do, next season should be great.
  • 6 0
Protur: Hill's days are not behind him.. Did you even see the lines he took? If he just gets back to some fitness and get some solid riding time in without injuiries he will be back to winning races soon. He sees lines nobody else even think of and he rides smoother than all the other riders.
Everybody who thinks otherwise can try to ride next time they get injuired it's not that easy.
  • 2 0
sh4dgy, no way is Hill's 07 season as good as Gwin's season this year if Gwin had won worlds this year. Hill's 07 season isn't even as good as nico & Gatchet's best seasons, which are considered the benchmarks for greatest season ever. Hil will still be competitive but I stand by my statement that his best days are behind him. He may win another race or two, but I don't see him doing too much in this new atmosphere where Gwin is going faster than anyone ever, and where Hart, Brosnan, and other young guys are right there with him on the tech tracks, and will only get faster. Hill is not going to get faster compared to how they will progress. But it's good to see the Hill fans are alive and well, time will tell....Hart's win was the most dominating performance ever at the World's, thats what counts today. What an awesome ending to a spectacular year.
  • 1 0
Last year someone eleven years older than Sam became World Champion - that means Sam has a few years yet. Barel and Pascal show that he has at least a good five years left. You can never write off a Champion.
  • 1 0
Age is somewhat irrelevant, but statistics, trends, and multiple serious injuries are not. One could actually make a fair case that Hill is the 3rd fastest man on the Monster team, considering that Bren-dawg lacked a proper ACL in his strong leg for much of the season. Nothing against the guy, I'm aware he hurt his shoulder awhile back, but there are pain-killers, yet both of them beat him squarely on a track he once dominated on in similar conditions. I understand your point about a champion, though, and I dont count him out, he could win some more big races, including another rainbow jersey. That might make him the 2nd goat.
  • 2 0
Protur: "There are pain killers"? Wtf dude.. Do you think you can ride with an injuired shoulder just because you take some pain killers? Wow you're stupid..
  • 1 1
I wasn't implying that pain killers would make his shoulder 100%, I just meant that it could help with the pain, if he was feeling any 2 months after the injury. Hill's shoulder isn't the real issue I am getting at here, the real issue is that there is a new breed of riders out there that Sam Hill isn't capable of keeping up with, and it appears that some of his fans aren't willing to accept that. I ,just don't see any course that Sam can win on, since he clearly is no longer the king of the technical courses. You tell me where you think he can win and I'll name at least 3 riders who would likely beat him there.
  • 2 0
In for a penny in for a pound - whip over the line and a champagne ending - im practically in tears - and for brendan who lets face it has had a rubbish season - a little r and r and uk riders will be pushing it again - seriously bummed for gee though Frown this off season hes gunna be hard on himself......

So glad I paid to watch it. Danny’s run was absolutely amazing! Biggest lines and the biggest whips too.
Didn’t want Gwin to win but was gutted that he lost it by crashing… would have been super close otherwise.

The kid is 19 and hes got a massive future ahead of him so show some appreication for the lad because hes WORLD champion

Why is everyone letting K-I-T-D troll them so hard? The lads a prick ignore him. Back to business, Danny is the fricking BOSS. Was riding Hamsterley (Danny's home hill) today and when the news came in that he killed it. Everyone was buzzing for the lad. Cant wait to see his run, anyone got a link thats free?
  • 1 0
attn people wondering about Gwinn/ppl hating.... he was down by 2 seconds @ 1st split, down .9 @ second split and absolutely pinning coming into the bridge section, caught his grip in the fencing and went otb..had to untangle his bike and ended up 12th or something. he woulda given Hart a run for his rainbow jersey, thats forsure.
Treks not my favorite team, Gwinns not my favorite rider, but I do have a soft spot for good racing.

True that, I hadn't realized he was catching up to danny before he crashed, would have been very interesting had he not. Guess thats why Gwin says he likes a wide track. But being clipped in in these conditions seems like a disadvantage, considering there was hardly any pedaling. Safe to say now that Gwin should have run flats.'
  • 1 0
Excuse me for my ignorance but I was under the impression that Aaron Gwin was the World DH Champion for 2011!?!

I was looking at the race results and I only see Danny Hart winning this past one and he gets the rainbow. I'm a bit confused.

Thanks for any explanation!
  • 1 0
No worries mate, hope this helps...
This race was the World Championships, a one off race that has nothing to do with the world cups. The riders represent their countries and the winner is World Champion and is given the UCI rainbow stripes, hence Danny Hart and GB. That's why this is such a big deal.
Gwin won the overall for the world cups (all the other races) after ruling for the whole season and picking up the most points from each race.
  • 1 0
O, that makes much more sense (for people riding their national flags on their jerseys).

Having said, does that mean both Danny Hart (World Championship) and Aaron Gwin (World Cup Overall Winner) get to have rainbow for their jerseys or just Hart?
  • 1 0
Just Hart, there are no stripes for the World Cup overall winner, just for the World Champion. It's a pretty big deal and that's an understatement really. Since the beginning of the MTB World Championships 21 years ago, only 13 riders including Hart have won a DH World Championships. Of course that's mostly because Vouilloz won 7 of them, Hill won 3, and Barel won 2. Peaty has only ever won 1 of them, as have Gee and Minnaar. You can find the complete list here
  • 1 0
English ..american .. accents who cares.......gwin had a sick year 5 wins in 1 season the only man to do so ..1 st american to win overall world cup...what a rider,, it was gee's year last year.... so gwin crashed at the worlds who didnt ..gee.. .bryceland ...nearly every one was having problems in the super tough conditions .... ...harts run was sick ..he didnt crash he won ... best rider of the day.. run of a life time.... to all of you that are bitching... how many of you raced in the dh worlds champs / cups !!!...mmmm thats what i thought
  • 5 0
Yeaaaah Blenki, you are definitively a rock star!!!
  • 2 1
Even if clipped in Gwin didn't crash he still doesn't touch that time. Best, most surprising season EVER. Gwinner destroyed the world cup and Hart destroys at worlds, who would have imagined that a year ago. Still can't believe the time gaps and average speed differences, a truly legendary run for the young gun. Never thought of Giant as a great dh bike, but they are obviously capable. Props to Damian in 2nd, another big surprise. And Pascal in 5th, good for him, he can still keep up with some of the young guns on the right course. Now will all the Sam Hill fans shut up about him being able to win, he has obviously been eclipsed by younger, faster racers on the tech tracks.
  • 3 0
Don't forget that Hill was recovering from an injury, I'm curious how fast would he be without that issue Wink But Danny did a great job, he looked so fast on the track, I still can't believe he made it!
  • 1 0
One thing i would like to mention though is that Dany is quite a lightweight rider. Probably the lightest of them all today and in those conditions he had a huge advantage. Add to this his insane capabilities and here we go -- LOOK AT THE TIME :o)).
  • 1 0
I dont follow downhill to much but this winning run by far changed my oppinion on this devision of biking! absoult favourite video on PB right now Big Grin D Great work, bigg effort and good job there Danny Hart!!
  • 4 0
 Danny Champion of the World!!!!!!
  • 3 2
Bummed for Gwin but I had a feeling this was going to be the course Danny would pull out a big win on. He is all about staying loose and just letting it roll and that's what it took to win on this track.
  • 3 0
That Japanese dude on a single crown fork did deece, Fui in at 81st. Where are the Canadians?
  • 2 0
thank fook thats the season finnished i dont think i could take any more..your the man danny. lets hope freecaster are back next year!
  • 4 0
Just saw.... Brosnan would have been second in the elites.. Holy crap.
  • 4 0
Sick man it must have been the new Danny hart shwalbe tyres
  • 2 1
All the Gwin fan boys must be crying themselves to sleep right now. Mud - the great equalizer. Just pointing out that nothing is "in the bag" until the race is actually over.
  • 2 1
watching that run from danny absolutely mental pretty crazy ....nothing against gwin but i was stoked to see him to crash only because it made danny win but...danny take a bow
  • 2 0
That was the most amazing display of skills ive ever seen and that whip was insane !!!!
  • 1 0
hart is the best... congratulations to him, what a run for him Wink
i want him to win this championships and it really happened
  • 2 0
WORLD champion at the age on 19, Danny deserves it as hes been the most exciting rider to watch all year
  • 2 0
to me , the biggest winner today was Damian Spagnolo , 2nd place ! he just came out of no where
  • 2 0
Def a good result for him but out of nowhere??? He's a super dedicated racer who was 5th last year in the rain at Champery (after qualifying 2nd) and I'm sure it's done him no harm to be under Barel's wing the last few years.
  • 1 0
Well worth 13 quid/20 bucks/15 euros. Stop slagging Freecaster people it could be worse with that Rocky Roads bollocks, where would we be without Rob Warner.
  • 3 0

If you think about it, It used to be Peaty back in the day, winning the World Cups, and never pulling off a win at Worlds. Now Gwin is in that same exact position.
  • 2 0
True, but Gwin's at the start of his career, while Peaty was pretty much already a living legend by the time he got his rainbow stripes. I think if Gwin continues on the same path he's on, he'll win that jersey within the next couple of seasons. Even more so if it's on a course that suits him (MSA comes to mind).

I wouldn't be surprise that after this year, given the results, Gwin will probably seek out every mud-covered lift-assisted bike resort he can find and practice his 'questionable weather riding'. 5th at Ft. William in a muddy spot (IIRC), 3rd at La Bresse in the mud, and now a crash in slick Champery.

BTW: super-pumped Hart won. With Hill & Fairclough injured, I've been rooting for Hart this entire season because his style is just as ballsy and loose as the Monster boys. Glad he broke into the top spot of the podium (at the most ideal race too). Oh, and the whole 'man I hoped that Gwin wouldn't win [because he won everything else]' nonsense is pretty childish. Props where props are due, but don't feed the negativity just because someone's on a roll.
  • 1 0
This is only Gwinn's 3rd or 4th season though. Peat was racing for world cups for 15 or so years before he got the stripes, I don't think you can make that comparison quite yet... I have no doubt he will win the Champs at some point though.
  • 1 0
Breathtaking run, the guard has changed, Fav quote: RW - "How does he sit down with balls that big" Best commentary ever. Well played DH! Bravo!
  • 1 0
Wow nice one Hart, he really pulled off the win in slop conditions. Congrats to spagnolo and blenki also showing they got the mud skills.
  • 1 0
