Bike Check: Cam Zink's Devinci Chainsaw - Crankworx Whistler 2023

Jul 26, 2023
by Dario DiGiulio

Cam Zink's name is synonymous with freeride, with a long history of pushing the sport time and time again. It's fitting that a freeride legend would have a bike suited to the task, and luckily Devinci has just the thing. Their new Chainsaw is capable and burly, as Matt recently found in his long term review. Cam took his beyond the already capable stock configuration with some choice parts, as well as some clever setup details that should make the bike perform even better for his intended purpose.

WIth 10 Crankworx medals to his name, Cam Zink showed up to this year's event with a bike fitting the resume - it doesn't pull any punches in looks or in parts choice. Whether you want to call it a freeride bike, park lap machine, or mini DH rig, Zink's Chainsaw is certainly a dialed gravity bike, ready to hit all the gnarliest features Whistler has to offer.

His Medium Chainsaw is set up with 27.5" wheels front and rear, with the frame in the High position.

Big ol Push shock on there.

And a fresh Boxxer to match.

Meant to take the biggest hits out there, it's no surprise that Zink managed to eke out all the possible travel the Chainsaw has to offer. His bike is long-shocked to get 175mm of rear travel, getting it even closer to DH bike territory while still retaining its character. He's running the new Boxxer out front, and though he's still tweaking settings, he was quick to say he's happy to have a more usable tuning range on the new fork - on the previous model he had his volume spacers maxed out to suit his needs.

The Push 11.6 has two settings, one of which he had tuned for "jump off a building" hits, and the other meant for more typical DH use.

Mated to a Pod shifter.

One clever detail that caught my eye was the AXS DH drivetrain, using existing SRAM parts. My best guess is the XX1 derailleur is limited to only shift within the 7 speed cluster, which is all you need when downhill is the only direction you're going.

The Pod shifter is tucked up and out of the way, giving the cockpit a clean look and feel. One less cable is probably nice for tricks as well, should one be so inclined.

With Hope's new Centerlock rotors.

Big bike, big brakes. Hope's V4 stoppers should compliment the capability of the Chainsaw well, and match the aesthetic of the bike nicely. He's running some very burly and sticky Michelin rubber, which is welcomed in the wet conditions we've had the past couple days. Those tires are mounted to some Stan's rims, laced to Onyx hubs.

5Dev cranks.

Cam is a part owner of Sensus, so it makes sense that he's running their grips and pedals. Add to that a healthy grip of titanium bolts all around the bike and he's got a pretty solid coverage for their entire catalog.

Holding those pedals are some 155mm cranks, which Zink is quite stoked on - they obviously provide plenty of ground clearance, but also make for a very tight and balanced feel under foot, which can be great on the descents.

You can hear the eagles screeching in the distance with this paint job.

Titanium topcap for extra points.

Cam will be ripping this freedom machine around Whistler all week, so be sure to keep an eye out for him around the village. Thanks to the paint job, he shouldn't be too hard to spot.

In case you forgot how to spell it.

I heard 5dev has amazing customer service for when those cranks snap!
  • 27 6
Really? I heard bad things about their customer service. The cranks do snap frequently.
  • 8 0
@wburnes: I still wonder if it was a bad batch of metal or not… they existed for a couple years before we heard anything and it all came at once… not defending them:.. just curious
  • 9 10
They got me some within a week across the world and sent the park version. I couldn't have asked for more.

@stormracing: Any product with their level of customer service isn't worth owning.

@stormracing: Check out MyLittleBikeShop on Insta, check out his pinned stories.
  • 5 0
@deuceringsting: I’ve seen the whole story unfold. Really Unfortunate for sure!
I was more so looking at it, customer service aside, as to whether it was the batch of metal being the issue or not
  • 7 0
@stormracing: I mean anything is possible, right? But not doing the right thing (voluntary recall) and abusing your customer is a great way to destroy a company.
  • 8 6
@wburnes: I just warrantied a pair of their first gen trail/enduro cranks for a paint issue. It was the easiest warranty process I’ve ever done. I emailed them in the morning and they hade a new pair shipped by the end of the day, no questions asked, for free. All of the snapped ones I believe have been first gen which were recently discontinued and replaced with the trail/enduro R which supposedly fixed all the problems. I could be an anomaly but so far their products and customer service has been amazing.

@deuceringsting: Yikes, they seem like clowns.

Sucks to hear that. Not like I was going to afford those any time soon but I always had that on the dream upgrades list.

5dev absolutely shit on me on Instagram. All I did was call out their sensitivity. Boys are soft over there. Can't take the same jokes they hash out.

@andrewfif: in you i'd be pissed AF, the one you got were totally different to the park one that look terrible, and after spending 500$ on some cncd cut gx i'd expect them not to fail.
  • 3 1
@andrewfif: I would have asked for the original ones to not have broken, but I guess thats just me....
  • 2 2
@onawalk: yeah that’s for sure better. I’ve broken and bent so many cranks at this point so I’m just glad I didn’t get hurt.
  • 4 0
@andrewfif: I've broken a lot of stuff in my years of riding, but never cranks.

I dont ride anything fancy, or over the top heavy duty, just GX, or Descendant, or Race Face Turbines before that.

I've scrapped so much, but never a set of cranks

@onawalk: funny enough Gx have been dialed for me too. They’re doing it right. Smile

 LOL!!
my EeWings are just over 4 years old now! cheapest cranks I ever bought! (no sarcasm here)

That paintjob on a Canadian made frame named after a Canadian downhill legend feels wrong Razz
  • 6 7
Especially when he claimed people were disrespecting him for misspelling his name on an instagram/PB post. This seems more disrespectful than that.

Conversely it feels so right. Just needs a beautiful bald eagle on the side and something like "America number 1 baby!" on the side of the down tube.
  • 37 4
@Puneta: I see the irony, but why is it disrespectful? The company chose to sponsor him, and he’s always been proud of his nationality, just like Stevie was. The more people all over the world ride this bike and make it their own, the more it reflects well on Stevie, Devinci, and Canada.

Starred and stripped rican paint jobs are always cheesy whatsoever.

Came here looking for someone to say this.
  • 9 8
I have to agree with this 100% as a dual citizen who is increasing less and less "proud" of the USA half. I get what @BiNARYBiKE is saying, but if Zink should be more aware of the brand and the name of the bike. I mean Stevie is a Canadian Legend who deserves the respect of the MTB community in all regards. Simply put, just don't cover a bike that is a tribute to Steve Smith in Stars and Stripes. Paint it any other way. Like literally anything other than the good ol' Red White and Blue. Also, "chose to sponsor him..." I'd like to know the background of that. He has been through a lot of frame sponsors lately.
  • 5 4
@gossman: Zink got a little dumbed-down by being Palmer's neighbor in NV from what I've seen. DV away....

nah, Devinci is a global brand!

@code26: Clearly you're still upset that we turned down your sponsorship request after we had Sorge review the ride video you submitted. While we don't expect everyone to be at Kurt's level, ultimately he has the final say. If had been up to us...the fact that you raced "Pro-Beginner in the Amateur Class" at your local Y would have got you on the program. You keep pushing...you'll get there!
  • 68 16
@PUSH: Regardless of the comment he made, you're doing a disservice to your company by abusing him publicly. Apparently the 5dev post I made above went way over your head. Man, customer service these days is insane..
  • 7 6
@PUSH: This is a really funny response...I now will be contacting you guys since I own a bike store. Obviously you truly believe in your products.
  • 42 27
@deuceringsting: It was meant as sarcasm, and to be taken VERY lightly as we were joking. Unfortunately we're not able to put a smiling face emoji behind the comment. We have no idea who @code26 is and have no idea if a request was sent to us.

@PUSH nicely played, pleasantly funny and clever as. Cool products too.

 @deuceringsting: Abuse? Come on now.

@BiNARYBiKE: " to speak in an insulting and offensive way to or about (someone)."

@BarryWalstead: I haven't seen how PUSH operates on social media at all, so maybe I missed the joke. To me it seemed rude.
  • 25 3
@deuceringsting: it's just in poor taste for a company to feel the need to defend itself on something like the PB comment section. Especially a company as high end as Push. Nobody cares what some clown says here, but they all notice when the company retaliates.
  • 14 2
@warmerdamj: is push high end, just seems like pointless adjustments marketed as high end
  • 9 2

@code26: you’re not wrong. Push’d out 170mm bike to go SHRED THE BLUE TRAILS AND YELL “YEEWWW” AT EVERYTHING. Posting 12 minutes of shaky GoPro chin mount footage and call out the “GoPro effect” in the caption.

@PUSH: I thought this was hilarious! Makes me want an 11.6 that much more.

Yours truly,

  • 5 0
@PUSH: I was just always bummed that I bought a push when it was advertised as a forever shock and it wouldn't be tuned (or even resized and let me try to tune) to a new bike that was a pretty simple horst link ride. So much for buy it forever.
  • 2 0
@adrennan: Yeah, unfortunately with the ELEVENSIX we're only able to reconfigure it to approved fits. We definitely have run into a few situations where riders want to take it to a new bike that we don't have a fitment for. Not common, but definitely has happened. Sorry about that experience, we are trying to increase bike fits all of the time.
  • 2 0
@PUSH: Try typing a colon followed by a righthand-side parentheses Smile I liked your reply.

@adminofthegapers: clearly you’ve never been on one .. you just rather flap
Those gaper gums on a product you have zero clue about … awesome
Shock with ohlin coil right behind it
  • 3 0
@PUSH: it has long passed at this point, but I really would have rather had the fitment adjusted even if you couldn't retune (or at least match the tune to a similarish horst link bike). I was left with an expensive shock that I had to resell for nowhere near what it was worth to me. Would have been really cool to be running it on my reeb from just down the road from you guys. but it makes buying future products tough to justify.
  • 2 0
@adrennan: well I am a gaper, I’d have no use for this price of jewelry
  • 2 0
@adrennan: that's why i'm not riding an 11.6 anymore, definitely not as reconfigurable as advertised, they also drop tunes for bikes they once had tunes for. which sucks cuz i loved how it rode
  • 1 0
@hot-beef-sundae: definitely misleading marketing which makes it impossible to support them again with so many other options

@bigtim: Big bottom bracket doesn't want people to know this trick, they just want people to replace the BB every season.
  • 19 2
 AXS DH, bring it!
  • 1 3
Bringing it to bmx first i heard
  • 1 0
@hajek: you can easily make the derailleur yourself. I made one using an XX1 Eagle AXS derailleur body and the cage from a GX DH derailleur. The main problem is the cassette. SRAM tech claims they cut up an Eagle cassette and somehow hacked it so that you can still attach it to an XD driver. That part I haven't figured out yet.
  • 2 0
@seraph: how did you fix the problem of limiting it to 7 speeds? That was always the part that stopped me. I didn't want to burn out the motor or gearbox by shifting into the limit screws while the derailleur still thought it had more gears.
  • 1 2
@hmstuna: @hmstuna: no problem at all with that, the limit screws are for limit it for a reason. You can use it for 12, 10, 7 or 2 speeds nothing will be damaged by the limit screws. At the end it's just a derailleaur like the the mechanic, but with a servo inside which will move the paralelograms as the wire in the mechanic system. In the mechanic you could modify it with the limit screws for less speeds Wink
  • 1 0
@fabriciofracchia: except for Axs derailleurs the limit screws don't actually do the limiting. They are a failsafe and setup per the manuals instructions never actually in contact with the parallelogram. Obviously dialing one in and trying to shift will put a lot of stress on the gearbox and either stall the motor or maybe slip the overload clutch? I'm not entirely sure what will happen but definitely not what the derailleur was designed for.

Do you have experience riding a limited axs derailleur longterm?
  • 1 0
@hmstuna: we regular folk can't actually limit the derailleur to 7 speeds except with the limit screws. I'm sure the fine folks at SRAM programmed the AXS derailleur motor to only recognize 7 positions so it probably works flawlessly.
  • 1 0
@seraph: ahh I was wondering if you had figured out some custom firmware. oh well I suppose axs on a dh bike is a bit silly anyways.

That's messed up that he slapped a Troy Lee sticker on your great looking custom paint job. I recall a custom red, white, blue edition for Dakota Norton when he was on Devinci.
  • 5 1
Why is this dude still getting custom frames? Who out there is actually buying bikes because a once epic rider is now on them? All Zink's good at now is reminiscing on the past while throwing shade at riders "smashing" his old records.
