How To Cutty With Brendan Fairclough - Video

Dec 13, 2017
by Pinkbike Staff

Learning how to cutty is an easy way to add a little speed and style into your riding repertoire, but it'll take some practice before you're able to really let that back end drift out like Brendan Fairclough. Although there is a fine line between a cutty and a freeride flick...

Watch what Brendan has to say on the topic, then go give it a try for yourself.

You're allowed 3 cutty's a ride maximum without looking like a tool. IMO
  • 5 7
 Unless you're spraying rocks...
  • 17 1
3 a run or 3 a day? Let's get the specifics now Wink
  • 31 4
 3 a minute. Obviously.
  • 14 2
That all depends on how many photographers there are on your run

the problem is the guys that do the freeride flicks and destroy berms, they shouldn't be allowed bicycles.

 @slayerdegnar: you can't roost on a bicycle....
  • 1 1
 you spelled "1" wrong
  • 1 0
@dtrotter: and you spelled 10 wrong. What's your point?
  • 56 1
I call it an "Overcorrect-snap-too-far-back-tank-slap-endo-hospital-visit-you're-too-old-mate". Or, that's what people who saw me try it would call it.

 I feel you..

dirt was harmed in the making of this video.

Where's Bryn Atkinson when you need him?

Yes! As much as I like Brendog, that's not a cutty. It's a power slide. Bryn is the cutty master.
  • 1 0
 @JamesR2026: either him or atwill.
  • 1 0
@Absent: You gotta go back further to the Alex Rankin for DirtMag Fundametnals video with Jusso and Bryn. Back when Bryn was on MadCatz Ironhorse with Sam Hill. Only version I can find on Youtube is the Russian dubbed haha.

 @Patsplit: Thanks for that!

i always called this move the "rattlesnake slap," only works if they're sleeping though
  • 6 3
is the sleeping requirement from experience?

Back in the day this was called the “kick out” and it was created to help trash cans fly on trash day.
  • 5 3
I though a cutty was using your body weight to dig into a turn for traction and not breaking loose?
  • 41 2
@femto505: I think that is just called turning.
  • 15 0
 I call it a shralp
  • 13 1
great video. a little short but to the point. more instructional videos like this please pinkbike.
  • 11 1
lol, not a cutty. freeride flick. watch brynn, curtis robinson, or david mcmillan
  • 3 0
Yeah that was my first thought too. For a cutty your should be pushing down on the bike not lifting the rear.
  • 2 0
I want to see a video of Reece and Brendan debating and demonstrating which is which. Maybe a panel of other pros vote or let PB readers vote.

This is how we used to slow down on BMX before features, because we rode brakeless. Never thought this has a name...
  • 16 2
Shhhh... don't tell the sensitive mountain bikers that everything came from bmx before mtb...
  • 2 0
"an easy way to add a little speed"

I always thought it was to slow down. lol
  • 8 1
berm shralp. Looks good feels good. kills trails.

Sounded like Brendan would normally say “cu’ie” but had been asked to pronounce the ‘t’ so everyone understood him. Might be wrong but he sounded a bit oz to me XD
  • 3 0
@ThomDawson: yeah he comes down in the middle at one point with a 'cuddy' that sounds all sorts of wrong
  • 1 0
 Thank you fuckers!!
  • 3 0
There's a distinct lack of cutty tutorials in general so this is a great tutorial to make.
  • 3 0
There really is a video for this?
  • 4 0
Nope. There isn't. Wish there was...
  • 3 1
I call it a slow down a little bit but my brake is not working.
  • 2 0
 Watch brakeless riders do this.
  • 3 0
I call it a roost slap
  • 2 0
 cool
  • 1 0
I always seem to take it too fast & over rotate....end up hitting the eject button!
  • 7 6
Wow. He broke traction and displaced 100g of dirt. What an inconsiderate, environment hating bigot lol

@zede: lol go f*ck yourself, bruh.
  • 1 0
Basically load your weight on the fork and flick the back end with you legs
  • 2 0
Now teach us how to Dougie.
  • 1 0
Hmm, easy enough of the flats but how are guys doing it full speed at the apex of berms?
  • 1 1
they basically turn hard on the flat ground below the berm so they lose traction and slide out, but the berm happens to be there to catch them. its so overdone and old by now though. couldn't be more ready for this "trick" to die.
  • 1 2
Interesting. I sorta do the opposite. I use the same technique as I use to pump the bike forward on asphalt - lean in, and push the rear tire into the turn with my legs.
  • 2 1
f*ck is a freeride flick? And how's it different?
  • 4 0
 That’s a question for @TEAM-ROBOT.
  • 7 0
Then there's the scandanavien flick...rally derived for setting up corners.
  • 3 0
@jrocksdh: the Scandinavian flick makes me horny
  • 2 0
@npleshek: me too. I asked my girl if she wanted to watch a dirty video from the internet with me. She put on a nighty, and looked really sad as I stared into the noise/light box making antilag noises without even noticing her. It was a good night. lol
  • 2 0
@therealtylerdurden: should have put on the 'how to manual' video demonstrating hip thrusts.
  • 1 0
@jrocksdh: I'll try that next time. She'll probably look as longingly into the TV as I was.. For different reasons though! lol
  • 2 5
I feel like i do the opposite. I come in square-ish to the berm and as the front tire is about to make contact with the berm i lean the bike over and weight the bike hard. then the back end drifts in till it catches the support from the berm. then again i cant do it without one and i sure as shit cant do it on flat corners
  • 1 0
been doin this for yrs never knew what it was called
  • 1 0
cutty means something else in the bay area haha
  • 1 0
More tutorial videos with Brendog please!!
  • 1 0

YOUR BERM IS WAY TOO HIGH YOU NEED TO CUTTYYYY!
  • 2 2
My 9 yr old can cutty!! teach me how to dougie. Or jump better yet
  • 9 9
Who is going to fix the rut he just made?
  • 2 2
Hope it doesn’t catch someone’s front tire and wash them out????
  • 13 2
love a good rut. Trails are always better with a good rut
  • 17 1
Probably the professional trail crew in the bike park.
  • 2 2
your prices are way to high, you got too cutty!
  • 1 0
 Car key?
  • 2 2
Surely that's just a skid, right?
  • 1 0
 Kid Cuddy
  • 5 7
TIL that "being cutty" is the same as "destroying a corner".
  • 7 2
 Step 5..do trail work
  • 3 6
I cuttied so hard, I blew my tire off my rim. (with a tube in it, without puncturing the tube) I AM SICK
  • 1 3
