Pivot Releases New Mach 4 Carbon and LES 27.5 Models

Pivot Mach 4 Carbon

Pivot has been rolling out all manner of new models of late. Today came the announcement that they were waving the magic re-design wand towards two of their cross-country/trail offerings, the Mach 4 Carbon and LES hardtail.

Here’s the Cliff Notes version: The Mach 4 Carbon remains an ultra-light, speed weapon, but receives a stiffer chassis in the bargain, while the brand's World Cup carbon hardtail is now available in a more nimble 27.5 package.
Pivot Mach 4 Carbon

The Mach 4—A Little Bit Country, a Little Bit Rock and Roll

The Mach 4 has been kicking around Pivot’s line up from the company’s start. In all that time it’s always been a wicked little cross-country whip. Well, Pivot didn’t screw with the basic formula much with this update on the old standard bearer, but they, no doubt, noticed that even cross-country riders are demanding more descending prowess from their featherweight rides. Long gone are the days of ultra-steep head angles, mile-long stems and a design rationale that went something like “Well, it’s twitchy as a meth addict in lock up, so that must make it a great race bike”. Long gone. And good friggin’ riddance. That’s me editorializing. I’ll get back to facts in a second.

Pivot Mach 4 Carbon
I’m not sure if being a more capable, more trail-oriented bike makes you more country or more rock and roll (to everyone in Estonia scratching their heads right now, just click here…it’s a long, slightly-creepy story), but the takeaway is that Pivot wanted the Mach 4 Carbon to retain its blazingly fast acceleration and nimble nature, but gain a bit more confidence when the going got rough.

Mach 4 Carbon frames weigh as little as 5.1lbs (2.3kg). Complete bikes are available under 22 (10kg) lbs.

So, for 2018 Pivot completely redesigned the rear triangle with an eye to increasing stiffness and adding tire clearance. Pivot says the bike will fit up to a 2.6-inch tire… that's a lot of rubber for a little 'ol XC bike. Impressive. As you probably guessed by now, the bike gets Boost 148 rear hub spacing. The company is also offering the Mach 4 Carbon in both Trail and XC Race build kits. You spend your nights dreaming of donning a skin suit and crushing the dreams of other people in skin suits? You’re probably going to opt for the XC kit with the Fox 32 Step Cast fork, pinner Maxxis Ikon 2.2” tires and flat carbon bars. Want to just, you know, ride the hell out of a fast bike on a trail? A trail kit with a 130mm-travel Fox 34, a set of Maxxis Ardent 2.35s and wider riser bars is probably the better choice.

Those are, frankly, the main distinctions. Drivetrain, brakes, and wheels remain constant, so it’s not like you’re gaining a piggyback shock and a gift certificate for a full-face helmet when you opt for the trail build kit, but the differences are distinct enough to matter on the trail and it’s cool to see more companies offer XC bikes in more flavors…including, real-world-capable configurations. How much does the Mach 4 Carbon cost? Pivot currently offers 14 different build kits (both Shimano and SRAM). Starting price for complete bikes is $4,599 (single-ring, XT build kit) to $9,499 (XTR Di2, 2x group).

Pivot Mach 429 Carbon LES 27.5

Pivot has been offering their ultra-light, LES 29er hardtail for some time now. The LES 27.5 is, you guessed it, a smaller-wheeled model that, according to Pivot, exceeds previous standards for stiffness and power transfer. Bold-ass claim there. What we can say at this point is that the new carbon hardtail features Boost 110/148 front and rear spacing, and stubby (16.77 inches/426 mm) chainstays. The addition of smaller wheels will appeal to riders who prioritize nimble handling and Pivot claims that the bike has a decidedly BMX feel to it… or as BMX-like as a World Cup-caliber, cross-country bike gets. We’ll see.

Pivot Mach 429 Carbon LES 27.5

The LES 27.5 is available in a wide range of sizes—from Extra Small to Large. The XS model fits riders on down to 4’10” and still accommodates a water bottle inside the front triangle. The LES 27.5's compact frame design makes it possible to build a sub-19.4lb / 8.79kg race bike—sweet music to the ears of people seeking the best possible power to weight ratio.

Pivot dresses the LES 27.5 in nine different build kits at present. Prices range from $3,599 (USD) to $8,599 (USD)

LES 27.5 Details
• Ultra-light, ride-tuned, carbon frame featuring leading edge carbon fiber materials and Pivot’s proprietary hollow core internal molding technology
• Complete bikes under 19.4lbs / 8.79kg

• The LES hardtail design has been ridden to victory in UCI World Cup, professional XC, endurance and short track races.
• Boost 110mm front and 148mm rear spacing for ultimate in responsiveness and handling precision
• Extremely short 16.77”(426mm) chainstays
• Frame fits tires up to 2.6” wide*

@Scottybike36: @Scottybike36: isn't it fascinating that word lesbian is less triggering than gay? 29ers are sooo fkng lesbian, now let's try with the other word... 29ers are so fkng transsexual... I love it I just love fkng with stupid people... they think they fight for some just cause and I like to piss on it...

@WAKIdesigns ... queer. I prefer to identify as a queer bikesexual, thank you very much. and for the record, I like all wheelsizes, just depends on mood.

To quote Duke Nukem: "damn you're ugly" Wink
  • 5 0
It was ugly enough that for a short travel 650b I ended up getting a Norco Olve (that is a "Revolver") instead ... the Mach 4 has a special place in the "ugly bike" category!!!!!
  • 2 0
They definitely look better then the flueresenct Rocky vertex I own.
  • 2 1
and internal rear brake hose and pressfit BB. I have a Mach 5.5 on my "next" list, but it's at the bottom for those reasons.
  • 2 0
Like the switchback, it's the result from the decision to include a bottle cage within the main triangle. Firebird looks rad cos it doesn't have one.
  • 2 0
 @strasznyzbigniew: shake it baby!
  • 3 0
Pivots newer designs (starting with the Mach 429 Trail) look much better. They gradually moved to more straight-shot tubes. If they wanted to do that for the Mach 4 that would mean (among other things) new molds for the main frame which is expensive, so I get why they chose to keep the old design for what is essentially an upgrade to incorporate the 148mm axle standard and 2.6 inch tires.
  • 1 0
Looks like a Specialized Enduro when they went all swoooopy.
  • 4 1
@strasznyzbigniew: Its only "ugly" if you have to buy it, give me one for free she's a thing of beauty almost!!
  • 1 0
The Mach 4 looks like the tubes are melting and sagging under their own weight.
  • 1 1
@lake-st: the fact that some ugly fat lady wants to jump in bed with you doesn't make her beautiful Wink
  • 2 0
@strasznyzbigniew: Just turn up the damping to keep rebound in check.
  • 1 0
Note to frame builders: STOP trying to fit bottle cages into your frames. We have hydration packs.

Ugliness is what happens when you insist on making space for bottles
  • 1 0
@short-but-sweet: I disagree entirely. I'm actually mostly interested in the frames where they've designed for 2 bottles again. I (and it seems the majority of people where I live) hate wearing packs except for on short rides. 2 Cages allows us to carry water and bear spray without annoying weight flopping around on our backs.

DH bikes going 29", XC bikes going 27.5". Just what exactly is going on in this industry?

Here's a new rule about wheel sizes and the industry: People concerned about wheel size are idiots. It is going on since 2009 when 29ers were pushed hard, in 2012 we got 27.5 - if you haven't adopted yet, if a 29" DH bike gets you surprised, you are officialy an idiot. A fkng idiot.
  • 10 0
human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!
  • 3 0
whatever, get with the times. 26" is back. just look at all the kiddos on SE rippers doing giant stupid wheelie tricks.
  • 2 0
This is refreshing... 27.5 actually sounded like a new standard for xc when I read it.
  • 1 0
When have there not been 27.5" XC bikes then? Out of 26", 27.5" and 29" it is the youngest standard so of course we're seeing more bikes which were previously only available with different sized wheels. There is a Capra 27.5" now too, see?

This seems like a fun bike to me.
  • 34 2
The rear swing arm detail is gorgeous.
  • 8 1
I was drooling over that too. It looks like modern art.
  • 1 0
@JasonALap: I thought that too, to begin with, then thought about how light the frame is, then the fact it could potentially be three times that weight with our local claggy chalk sat in that part, it'd just be a good mud collector...
  • 24 2
Having ridden many Pivots and owning one, I'd bet that Mach 4 is a great trail bike, probably a rocket...but I've always thought it looked like it was in a head-on collision.
  • 22 1
It looks like it got left out in the sun and the frame melted and started to droop.

Mach 6, Mach 6, Mach 6. I said it 3 frigging times and it's still not released. Come on guys, give the Mach 6 a reach that's not a joke,,,it's been 4 years already!
  • 4 2
They just released the Mach 5.5 and have the Firebird that was released not that long ago too. The Mach 6 is just redundant and too much overlap between the two. Don't think we're going to see a new Mach 6 anytime soon.
  • 6 4

@Agleck7: True but not interested in 27.5+ or 29
  • 2 1
@tcmtnbikr: You can run normal 27.5 (non 2.6" tires) on the Mach 5.5. Not trying to push it, just saying I don't think it'll be for a few more years.
  • 1 1
 Swoopy frame pile of wank.
  • 2 0
Mach 5.5 with a Float X2 shock seems to make the Mach 6 irrelevant. And if you want something more get a Firebird.
  • 6 1
Man, that Mach 4 could have been stiffer, lighter and better looking if they would just forget the ridiculous front derailleur mount! Please stop with the FD's on top end bikes in 2017.
  • 3 0
We all respect and know Pivot makes exceptional bikes but they just don't visually look bad ass...yep, I'm commenting on that super curved top tube. It's just my opinion please don't take offense. Pivot again makes awesome bikes and they know their stuff. Just throwing my pointless opinion out there...not sure why though.
  • 2 0
They're so close to making a good looking bike too. I think that's what bothers me the most about it.
  • 1 0
It's a legacy the "new" Mach 4 carries over from the previous iteration. Look at the Mach 429 Trail, Firebird, Switchblade and Mach 5.5: They've learned their lesson.

This is the old (2014?) Mach 4 with a new rear triangle, so tampering with the curvy tubes of the main frame just for looks probably wasn't an economically promising option.

That's why this "new bike" is in a way a throwback to somewhat older days of Pivots designs.
  • 6 0
It kinda looks like an old swayback mare that's on her way to the dog food factory...
  • 5 1
I feel like Pivot full suspension frames look the same way plastic does when it's been left on the dashboard of a car in the hot sun for just a little bit too long...
  • 4 0
The name suggests that the bike is four times faster than the speed of sound. Visually its not very convincing. I expected better form to go with all that function.
  • 2 1
For those who say the mach4 is ugly, What makes it so? Is it just the shape of the top tube? The graphics?...I dont get it, I like it. Am i missing something? Ive seen plenty of bikes that I would say are uglier then this one.
  • 5 0
Now make an aluminum version so I can afford it!
  • 4 1
I doubt they could form the meltedness in aluminium.
  • 2 1
I for one only ride hardtails, and single speed at that. It's not for everyone, but it blows the wind up my skirt. Now if someone would only come out with a stiff light carbon frame like the Les that has adjustable drop outs, external cable routing, and a THREADDED BOTTOM BRACKET!!!
  • 2 1
pretty tough to build a frame when you go into the process knowing you'd sell about 10 of them Smile
You sound like a prime candidate to build your own steel frame to these specs. Probably cost less overall too!
  • 1 0
Hey TRG from the look of the Pivot website specs as below you can set the Les up single speed Smile Still has internal cabling and Pressfit BB, I have two Pivots and have never had any issues but im in a very dry Perth WA (Sam Hill Country) so not much water gets in our bikes.

I ride a ss in winter and a dually when warm, so I get you. Such a bike is near impossible to find in carbon, I drive myself near crazy trying to find it. I never did. The only option is custom steel. Just do it, expensive but you can specify everything. Or ti if you're a squillionaire
  • 4 0
Dude the Mach 4 looks like someone got carried away with the shape adjust tool in photoshop... those curves are... woof
  • 5 2
Yep I don't care how it rides when it looks like it should have a basket on the front.
  • 1 0
So fast/ugly that they didn't need to include any useful geometry data in the pb advertisement?
Wow, some short chainstays. I hope that'll make up for a short top tube and a 69.2 head angle.
  • 5 1
The Mach4 will fly off the shelves at Mach 0.
  • 4 0
I bet the LES has a hairy bush.
  • 2 1
Hmm, zero mention of a XL frame, so no one over 6 feet tall need apply. Big people like snappy rides and cool stuff too, y'know.
  • 1 0
There is a large long that fits up to to 6'3" on the Mach 4 and most XC riders that are over 6' will size up to the Les 29er XL which fits riders up to 6'3"+.
  • 4 1

"• Extremely short 16.77”(426mm) chainstays" I do not agree with use of the word extremely. Several 29ers have CSL shorter than this.
