Video: Johannes Fischbach’s Massive 140 Meter Ski Jump Crash - Updated with Behind the Scenes

Oct 10, 2019
by Daniel Sapp

The background story about the world record project, according to Fischi:

bigquotesI've been haunting a special idea for several years now: To make the world's longest jump with a MTB, i.e. a world record ! Some years ago Fischi already made test jumps from an 85 meter ski jump and reached a distance of 50 meters. The goal now was to max it out. Fischi's objective: "If I can jump 50 metres from your 85-metre ski jump, then the 140-metre ski jump has to go a lot further!

Following the massive crash video, Fischi released the behind the scenes video below. We also touched base with him and he said he is "all good."

Amaury Pierron could have rode that one out.

chuck norris woulda done a can can superman suicide no hander, crashed intentionally just to make the ramp hurt and slapped the shit out of amaury pierron

No armor, no neck protection, no one at the bottom, ummm, that was stoopid. But I suppose it's not that different from crashing off that jump on skis.

Even icy hard packed snow gives WAY more than ground...?
  • 40 8
If he would've made it he would've have come way too hot on landing and ran out of room and crash the fence at the end of the track
  • 14 2
@ybsurf: LOL, actually that probably would have been a much worse wreck... he's pry luck it ended with the slide!! Smile
  • 16 16
@ybsurf: you know this how? lol I'm pretty sure he would have thought about the run out before attempting this. thanks for the input though lol
  • 15 2
@nismo325: man look how steep it is and how fast he comes in, he made it to the bottom sliding can you imagine on his bike. I'm sure he thought of the run out as much as he thought about his landing lol.
  • 7 1
Funny, I don't remember anyone saying that when the Utah Jazz Bear did it at Utah Olympic Park.... relax, he's fineeee
  • 6 0
@stiingya: I guess, you have never really had a true smack down on ice, or you only ski out west where “ice” is just hard pack...
  • 29 10
@nurseben Every weekend in almost every bike park in the world there is a safety first father figure, dressed up in all available protection who wrecks way harder than this on a 3ft jump, riding off a berm or on gravel road or when getting on a lift... this wasn’t too sketchy due to glide effect. If he did that on Crabapple or Fest series at half this speed it would be much worse. I am pretty sure he’ll be back up there and make it at some point, no matter how silly this is.
  • 2 2
@nismo325: from a bit of logic applied to experience ? maybe because the surface is made to glide and reproduce snow ? You're canadian so you must have tried to ride a bike on snow and know how much braking power you can apply. Now add the steepness of it, and the rather small stopping area where is bike would efficiently brake. And yes skis get away with it because they have 2x 2m edges designed to brake even on the slidy stuff, which means they have already slowed down a fair amount when they reach the stop area.

why do such retarded things ? why cant all world cup racers turn into bike mentors / coaching rather than trying to achieve retarded stuff as this ?
  • 11 0
He is most definitely wearing armour - look at his knees, elbows, back... But yeah, there should have been some first responders at the bottom.
  • 2 2
@Stinky-Dee: @Stinky-Dee: Well what do you mean? most snow would give more give than the ground thats definitely for sure. So its much worse than how skiers would do it.
  • 7 2
@barbarosza: You are right, lets all just slide in to the status quo, be the same, live boxed-in. Thats the way to do it..
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: you right he will be back most definitely. But still a pretty knarley wreck. Slowly front end is dropping lower and lower 100ft 140feet landing nose then fliping out of it. but he crashed goood!! If you don't always have the bike skills you best have the crashing skills. lol
  • 2 1
@CaptainKurt: I disagree, have you ever heard of bulletproof ice? It's an awful combo of manmade snow and rain that has been refrozen to be, well, bulletproof. It's one of the hardest substances known to man.... probably
  • 1 2
@E9G: and he's wearing a helmet. Yes, it's a non-mips moped helmet circa 1970, but at least he took the yellow bubble shield off.
  • 2 0
@ismasan: I can't stop watching that on repeat.
  • 1 0
@ybsurf: We can worry about crossing that bridge when we actually get to the bridge. One obstacle at a time. #partdeux
  • 1 0
@Stinky-Dee: Been knocked out going down on hard pack snowboarding, hell yea it's hard. But I'd bet that same crash would have been much worse on the dirt beneath the snow...? dirt grabs, is full of rocks N roots, snow slides. (note, I believe that surface he landed on is meant to create slide per other comments) Still I think snow, even hardpack/or groomed snow would have more possibility for compression than most dirt...? Guess it depends on the dirt, a groomed DJ run is like cement, up in the PNW they have all that loamy stuff that's probably got more give to it...
  • 3 0
@stiingya: off course it’s way worse with dirt. How do people think all the brain injuries from Rotational forces occur? Because there’s lots of grip between the helmet and the ground or a tree.
  • 1 0
@pwebster: Yea cause that's what he said, "bullet poof ice" is softer than dirt...

The point is that your average groomed ski slope is softer than landing on dirt. And even hardpack on "top" there is still snow beneath that is likely to give "some" when you land on it.
  • 4 0
If you watch the behind the scenes video he lands the previous attempt right from the top of the slope and has easily enough time to stop.
  • 1 2
@harrybrottman: Which might not be relevant when he tries to land much farther down the slope? Less run out, less time to stop, etc? Not that I know...
  • 1 1
Holy motherfuckin' shit! Pardon my French.
  • 2 2
@ybsurf: or went over the bars when he realized he didn’t have enough room and accidentally locked up the brakes in a panic
  • 2 1
@ybsurf: watch the half hour YouTube video. He test runs the runout and has loads of room.
  • 2 0
@juicybrownie: didn't see a 1/2 hour clip, but did see him do one where he landed it and yes he didn't seem to have any issues stopping... Smile
  • 1 1
@barbarosza: probably the stupidest comment I've read this year. Congrats
  • 2 1
All the negative commenters should watch the 30 min video. Plenty of thought has gone in and he made jumps that were almost as long.

This move will be forever know as the "Fischbach", dead sailor to a 15 minute slide.
  • 34 0
"You good bro?".....Glad to see this obligatory post crash question is universal whether it's a fall off a curb, or a simple 140m world breaking record attempt.

Also glad he's ok given how bad that could've been!!!
  • 30 0
I blame his giant balls causing a slow nose dive. He needs to tuck them balls in a bit more.
  • 9 0
@dirtypants, maybe he should take a leaf out of Yoann barellis book & rotate the brake levers up?
  • 1 0
Yeah, that and his self confidence was maybe a bit too forward because it’d take a ton of that just to pedal off at the top
  • 29 1
that dude is lucky to be alive/conscious/ambulatory...
  • 11 4
Uhh, @danielsapp, but when did stumbling around like a drunken sailor with a massive concussion and hunching over in place count as walking away.
(The blurb for the video states, “Johannes Fischbach has an unreal crash...and walks away.”)
  • 14 0
 @DRomy: he wasn't crawling
  • 4 0
@bizutch: Fair enough! Then again, it wasn’t walking. How about “....and staggers away”?
  • 27 2
Looked like an aerodynamics issue. The bike end had more drag than the top end so it rotated forward. He started out with no rotation and actually retrograde a bit.
  • 2 0
 Yes, I think so too.
  • 3 0
Possibly a matter of ground effect too, looking at how much his rotation accelerates right before the crash. It's interesting how many issues of big jumping there are that we don't even think about during our casual 20m flights...
  • 1 1
@brooce: or he touched the back brake. That’ll start forwards rotation
  • 1 0
@core-macneil-rider: I doubt that such an ecperienced rider would do it (and the wheel doesn't seem to stop turning), but who knows
  • 1 1
@brooce: you don’t actually have to stop the rear wheel just slow it down. Also if you look at the crash he appears to be a lil tail heavy till he starts hitting the steeper part of the tranny then the nose dive starts pretty bad.

Looks like he might miscalculated the air time by a tad.
  • 27 0
 Friday fails came early.
  • 35 12
uh maybe drop your heels a lit bit before you leave a 140 meter drop...?
  • 16 11
They were dropped. The ground didn't come up to meet him fast enough. I blame the ground. I would have had the biggest handful of rear brake ever when the rotation got near the point on no return - not that that would have helped. Not that I'd go anywhere near a 10 meter jump.
  • 23 0
@endlessblockades: Theoretically, some throttle/pedaling might be able to help instead of breaking in such nose-heavy cases Razz
  • 35 0
@naba: so you're saying Blenki would've stopmed it?
  • 22 2
Dead sailor of the year nomination.
  • 15 2
@endlessblockades: yeah you do not want to grab any brake in a nose heavy situation.... Front or rear it will drop the front
  • 15 6
thanks tips, why don't you show us how it done then @erik2k10 ?
  • 5 0
I think the amount of air resistance fucked him up
  • 2 0
@endlessblockades: grabbing the rear brake would put you further forwards.

Old bmx trick for dirtjumps was wait till you hit the peak of your jump then tap the brake to tip you forwards into the landing. Pretty sure it’s in an old dirt bros video
  • 1 0
@krashDH85: For sure - I would probably make it worse.
  • 13 1
Biggest dead sailor of all time! Huge balls!
  • 10 0
Hell's... Bells... Good advert for Leatt right there!
  • 4 0
Looks like the speed really saved him in fact. He was going so fast he was flung over the bars at the same trajectory as the slope, almost parallel with it, if that makes sense?

If he was going slower he would have landed much harder onto his head/neck I'd have thought, and probably wouldn't have got up quite as easy.

An update on his health status would be cool...
  • 6 8
If you watch the video with sound, you can hear that he replies to the person asking if he's good as he gets up and walks.
  • 61 1
@danielsapp: Adrenaline will make you stand up with a broken back...
  • 11 9
Here's your health update - That dude's a badass! Yanking the bars at that speed has to be crazy...yeah he's lucky he got up and I hope he gives 'er another send after he works the bruises out.

It's on his youtube page too and he wrote "on to the next one" there and doesn't mention being hurt. If there was anything really serious going on I'm sure he would have said so. Why's everyone gotta make everything emotional just so they can look like they care on the internet? SMH
  • 10 0
@joebmx88: It will, we've reached out to him and will post an update if we get one!
  • 1 1
@DwayneReynolds: i was saying adrenaline can do crazy things. a freind of mine once pushed away a quad that had pinned him
  • 1 1
 @joebmx88:

True! Had a client walk home from a park three blocks, up the stairs to his apartment before collapsing with a broken neck. He’s now a paraplegic. Baseball bat beatings zero chill.
  • 6 1
@DwayneReynolds: haha calm down big guy... I love when people accuse others of being emotional while being emotional themselves.. Quite hilarious. It is unsettling to see a crash that bad and have no idea if the guy is alright. Seems like basic human decency to want to make sure that the rider is good. I wasn't upset just genuinely curious.
  • 2 0
@RobKong: appears to walk...had to clarify that.
  • 1 1
@danielsapp: right and he said he needs a beer
  • 6 0
He's fine! Rode national champs a week later Wink
  • 3 0
@danielsapp: he has put up a behind the scenes video, where he talks to the camera after the crash. Apart from beeing really sore, he was pretty alright. Definitely lucky

  • 4 0
he's no soccer player!!! gets right up after that!!!! wow
  • 1 1
Honestly I can’t pretend to have ever taken a drop anywhere near this big, none of us have. But whenever I take off of a flat drop I pop the bike a bit so I don’t go nose heavy. He stays absolutely static throughout. Like I said I know nothing about the correct technique on something like this but this doesn’t look right.
  • 2 0
Just saw a post on Instagram by BlacksheepFPV where he lands it and rides out, may have been on the smaller roll in? Anyways, dudes nuts!
  • 1 0
at any point he could have drawn his arms towards his chest and pushed his feet down so that the bike would land with both wheels simultaneously beneath him. you don't need to be a big name to manage that technique.
  • 2 0
oh f*ck the one angle was plenty thanks! Now just a couple clicks less rebound and you got that Smile
  • 1 2
Dead sailor did it... shoulda did something, felt like he just blanked at takeoff @Bomadics got it right w/ the description of the "Fischbach" move, but I believe it was Josh Bender who pioneered that one ???? I'd like to see his doctors face after watching this vid

When I saw the ski jump at Deer Valley, my brain refused to comprehend how big, steep, fast and far those things drop...

The total drop and the distance of the scorpion and slide counts as an entire Friday Fail video.
  • 1 0
Damn, he landed on his head and then started to rotate further, but no neck or collarbone damage... what does Leatt has to say abut this? Speed and slope angle saved him?
  • 1 0
I would say the surface helped, if it had grip I dont like to think what could have happened.
  • 1 1
@zyoungson: Yes, there were no heavy impact forces as the body was travelling faster in horizontal direction than in vertical.

Ripping a saddle out with one's balls... Must certainly hurt! I wonder how large a part that took on the whole pain cocktail that he got from this.

If you risk your life with things like this then at least make sure the drone pilot knows how to fly and has it on camera when the shit hits the fan.
  • 1 0
That is worth watching twice. Hope he sticks it next time, that'd be insane.
  • 2 0
The sound is the gnarliest part.
  • 3 2
I think he would came so hot if he didn't crash he would've ran out of room at the end and crash the fence anyway

I think, this world record attempt is something nobody needs! Looks like...oh I never won a world cup so I do something to get some credits. But glad he is ok.
