Yoann Barelli Out for 6 Months With ACL Injury

Jun 20, 2019
by James Smurthwaite

Yoann Barelli has announced he will be out for six to nine months with an injury picked up last Sunday in Squamish.

Barelli was climbing when he lost balance and fell on to his left foot. The result is a complete ACL tear, a severely injured meniscus, a small fracture on the tibia plateau and a first degree MCL tear. Yoann will now require surgery and will be recovering for the rest of the season to be 100% for next year. The full story of the crash and the diagnosis is in the video above.

We're sending healing vibes out to Yoann and hope to see him shredding again soon.

"Into the Gnar" is the best MTB channel on YouTube. Yoann shreads so hard and his stoke is so high. Wishing him a speedy and full recovery so he can get back on his bike ASAP.

Came to say the same thing. The way he looks at lines that appear crazy and then pulls them off so casually is my second favorite part of it right behind his genuine love of riding bikes conveyed with every scream, huge smile, and laugh. Quick recovery Yoann and hope you find ways to stay sane while recovering and resting- something I would guess might be nightmare for someone with your energy level and love of movement and excitement.

He fought the gnar, and the gnar won.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I love Yoann's love of riding bikes. And his laughter is infectious. You can't help but smile while watching his vids. Wishing you a speedy recovery Yoann! Can't wait to see you back shredding again.

All those crazy descents and it happens while climbing!

Always geared up when climbing because 90% of my crashing comes from climbing, especially technical climbs! That's working against gravity for ya..

For sure- though I can't handle the heat of padding up for it

Ouch, his sponsors are not going to be happy. He even mentioned that he held back on one of his vids (riding a log over a ravine) because his sponsors wouldn't want to hear he hurt himself making youtube videos.

Noote to worrie - we ave Jaxon to continue the Into thu Gnarr series showing you thu b'est lines on video for GNAR trailes. Salute Best recovery Yoann, got to take time out and ensure the recovery is done properly for such injuries. Bone breaking is much easier to deal with.
  • 7 0
Wouldn't be so bad except for the tibial plateau fracture. ACLs injuries aren't that bad for cyclists in particular, but the tibial plateau fracture will likely take a really long time to heal. The quads will be useless for a long time, and I'm sure he will be in a knee immobilizer for quite some time. I was in a knee immobilizer for 16 weeks from a patellar tendon surgery. I was able to ride a bike before I could walk again. Have to retrain the body to walk again. He's young, so he'll be back to full speed in about a year.
  • 3 0
I'm pleased you mentioned this. A TPF is a really terrible injury which is probably worse than "just" an ACL. For a competitive skier it's usually a career ending injury (which makes Vonn's comeback so amazing)
  • 2 2
I had a very similar injury from a ski accident in 99. ACL done, small fracture to the tibial plateau, grade three MCL tear and a bucket handle tear of the meniscus. Had surgery and was skiing 7 months later. That quad is still smaller and now years later that knee is loose and is at times a little stiff and sore. Yoann is young and fit and motivated. He’ll likely heal well. I expect he’ll be road riding pretty quick but you need to cautious until the physio and doctor says go.
  • 4 1
I had a grade 5 (out of 6) tibial plateue fracture on March 30th. Had surgery on April 9th to instal 6 screws and a plate. I'm already riding xc again. Of course rebuilding the muscle atrophy is going to be an on going process, but not every TPF is a long recovery. I feel confident that Yohann will be fine. Attitude is almost more important than the physical aspect.
  • 2 1
Another recent major TPF patient here, blasted a tree skiing in early Feb and have 7 screws and a plate to show for it. Already back to full(ish) strength on the bike and walking mostly normally. Gearing up for the first XC race of the season in 3 weeks. Positive attitude and determination go a long way, have to believe a guy like Yoann will be back to normal on the shorter end of the recovery timeline.
  • 1 0
The time line of 6 months does sound about right physically, however racing at the highest level maybe something different. There's a big mental part of a sports related injury for an athlete of the highest level. I would expect for most athletes take 6 months to really feel somewhat confident in their bodies and at least another 3-6 months to put it all back together mentally and physically. That said, some athletes bounce back abnormally quick mentally and anything is possible with the hard work he will most certainly put in.
  • 1 0
Maybe 6 months to ride a bike again, another 6 months to get to race pace. Don't rush back, even though it is your livelihood its not worth it to get back too soon, it takes about 18 months for the injury to fully heal, IE: As hard to re-injure as before the initial injury. Coming back too soon and an award step and it could easily tear again. Now is a good time to be a rad dad. Good luck Yoann!!!
  • 2 0
@profro: so you get back to xc riding bro thats great news and you did amazing job recovering that fast! Yoann is a tough guy as well and he ll back riding in no time i believe in him Salute

Yoann! Quelle triste nouvelle!

Cutting one's hair is a universal method of dealing with depressing news. They did that in the Bible, along with gnashing teeth and pouring dirt on your head. Will miss this guy's riding videos, he's always rad and funny.
  • 4 0
don't stop filming into the gnar! Could be interesting to see how a pro recovers from injuries like this one. Injuries and the mental game of recovery can be equally gnarly as riding a rugged section of trail. Take care man!
  • 3 1
OMG Yoann, I'm so sorry that happened, dude. It's always something completely silly too. And I was bummed about being out for 5 weeks with a 5th metacarpal break. Can't wait to see you back. We'll all be rooting for a fast recovery.
  • 3 0
Sorry Yoan, I’ve torn my ACL 3 times in the same knee. It sucks and feels like it takes forever but you will be back 100% and a year from now will be stronger than ever. Time to be
A gym rat!!
  • 1 0
was it because the first two reconstructions were crap?
  • 1 0
@ciechan: the first two were done with a cadaver ACL and I continued playing soccer. Now a days they use your own tissue, and I had my grafted from the patellar tendon. Much more painful process but worth it in the long run!
  • 2 0
Wow, that was hard to watch but thanks for sharing the experience with us. Wishing you a speedy recovery Yoann. Lesson learned, save the gnar for the downhill! Hopefully we can see you behind the camera some more this summer, you could use the time to start your post riding career networking, I think you will be perfect for a career in broadcast/media!

Damn, a hiking injury, what a bummer!

Proprs to Yoann, love his videos, super funny dude.

Maybe he can continue doing the videos while healing, a little light hiking while coaching some of us fools through the gnar Smile

I volunteer!

Gutted for you dude, I'm currently rehabbing from a tibial plateau fracture that had to be plated and screwed. That was 7 weeks ago, hope to put my foot on the floor next week. Buy yourself some decent crutches!!

I'm sorry to hear this mate. I did mine three years ago, it's taken a while to come back but my mates now reckon I'm now faster than I was before. Keep at the physio and do everything they say. PM me if you have any questions. The same goes for anyone else with the injury.

Well, sheeeeeit -- was hoping for a PHD video to compare Remy's lines against Jaxon's...

Heal up quick, @yoannbarelli! And are you going to set up a patreon or something for your youtube channel? Love to kick you a little cash for dog treats!

Dude, nooooo! You'll bounce back 100%, but still, gonna miss your riding videos!

I am sitting here with my left leg elevated typing this because I had surgery on the exact same injury 5 weeks ago. Best wishes and speedy recovery, love your edits. For me inflammation inside the joint is the biggest limiter, ice water circulating machine is key at initial injury then constantly running the machine the week post-op, then alternating, heat, cold, compression and electric pulse every 30 min week 2 on. I drank liquor last weekend and my leg blew up so stay away from drinking as much as possible, I feel like I took 2 steps back. Mental prep for learning lots of patience because I'm no Racer just an avid rider and I'm going nuts and still have 5 months to go. Hope my 2 cents helps!

soo sad to hear this news , yoann is one of the best characters in Mtb , spreading the love of Mtb in every way , on a personal front I'm double gutted as I had a one to one booked with him when im in Whister , learning from him would have been epic , im sure he will be back and bigger than life as always

Bonjour Yoann. I wish you all the best with your surgery and take your time for recovery. Ligaments can be fixed but Meniscus really takes time. Could feel your frustration but positive as you are, time will fly away and next season is knocking on your door! And then wraaap!!!!! Best wishes from Austria!!!
  • 1 0
Yoann Barelli, I appreciate your attitude and general fun loving personality when it comes to your biking and photography. Your personality on camera is intoxicating and as a viewer you bring pure joy to a sport we all love. It pains me to see people get hurt and have to go through this healing process. I too have been under the knife and had to undergo almost a year of hard core rehab so that I could walk again. The easy part is going in for surgery and waking up in pain, to fix it you just take a pill. The hard part comes a few months later and you are still laying around waiting to heal. Your head goes to dark places and that is the time everyone around you has the opportunity to help you heal. I wish you luck and look forward to seeing you RACE once again!
  • 1 0
Gutted for you, but great job documenting the process you have gone through from injury to assessment and diagnosis. I'm sure it will help a lot of people out seeing it too. Good Luck for your rehab, hope to follow your progress!!

Was hoping for more footage of Jaxon in his videos, but not like this! Wishing him a speedy recovery. Sad to see someone so talented and fun loving sidelined.

Well, maybe no more Into the gnar this season. So, I guess let's go to the bar. I was loving the episodes, cant wait for more. Heal up.

Great video Yohan! Stay positive and keep making these videos your stoke off the bike makes life more fun!! You could do videos on line choice nutrition parenting and anything!!! Do interviews with your rider buddies! Race commentary! Stay stoked!
  • 1 0
The physio post op is as important as the reconstructive surgery, so make sure that you get good guidance on the latter!!
Heal fast
Good luck
Not sure how we will all cope without your “gnar” videos until next season, particularly when one has had the privilege of riding some of the trails you have filmed and described, in my case with Freeride Madeira.
  • 2 0
fuck this breaks my heart I feel so bad for him. you can have my legs, Yoann! You'll do better things with them than I do anyways... Hey at least look at the bright side, enjoy these 6 months with your family!
  • 1 0
OH NOOOO!!!! Sending healing vibes Yoann.
I know your pain, I tore my ACL snowboarding this winter, still awaiting surgery. In the meantime it has healed enough for me to function pretty normally. I'm back on my bike and riding almost at 100%. Of course surgery is invasive and there will be a healing process after going through that. But you're young, strong, healthy and most of all have an excellent attitude! Staying positive its most important, take time to enjoy some other activities, time with the family, etc etc. Into the Ganr is the best thing to hit YouTube ever! Can't wait to watch your comeback ride!!!
  • 1 0
Bummer! Get well soon Yoann! I just had a crash ...on a fireroad of all things. Loose gravel on the bottom turn of a fireroad and a rock straight into the knee. Its always when you let your guard down when these things seem to happen to me lately. Not on actual singletrack.
  • 1 0
Really sad about this, very best wishes to Yoann!
A friend (crossfit coach and competidor) had a very, very similar injury 3 or so months ago, jumping off from a rope climb. He's making a speedy recovery after surgery.

By the way, who else agrees it would be great to see him at the Joe Rogan Experience? Yoann Barelli and Martins Licis are the athletes I would like the most to see on the podcast
  • 1 0
Noooooooo! That news suck but is part of every sport. Yoann do a series about recovery I think it will help anyone in that situation, your hard work and positive attitude will have you back before the 9 months. My prayers and healing videos are on your way man!
  • 1 0
Yoann! I’m so sorry man, that a shitty shake. It happens, and it’s all good to be pissed about it once in a while. Like you said man, part of the game. You’ll be back, but keep yourself busy. Being out can mess with you, just keep busy.
This’ll all be in the rear view mirror soon, just get to that place. You got this!
  • 1 0
Oh man so sorry Yoann I feel your pain, I have the exact same injury BUT you are in the best hands Dr Sally Clark just did my ACL reconstruction surgery 4 weeks ago in Squamish and she did an amazing job. I can walk so well already and ride a stationary bike but I know it’s 7 more months before I can ride my mountain bike and I am determined to be patient, get really strong and not reinjure it.

Keep posting your rehab progress- your positive attitude will help all us fellow ACL rehabbers keep focused and semi-sane while off our bikes!
