2013 Red Bull Rampage: 36 BIKES

THE BIKES OF RAMPAGE

Truth be told, Rampage wouldn’t be happening without one very key ingredient - bicycles. Seems like an obvious thing really, but the almighty bike tends to fly under the radar at hugely publicized events like this. There’s a ton of stories going on right now, why pay attention to inanimate objects?

Take a look around, the building projects that have clinked, dragged and dug since Tuesday are insane (wait until you see the finals lines off the top). The stunts and infrastructure built by organizers over the last couple of months are equally ridiculous. And then there are the athletes, their skill and bravado, so compelling and dramatic. To be totally honest, this might be the most risky athletic competition on earth, why then talk about a thing?

Well, without said “thing”, Brandon couldn’t fly to the bottom of the mountain in 30 seconds—half of that in the air. Aggy wouldn’t be able to “warm up” for qualifiers by hitting the canyon gap a couple times. Gully wouldn’t be backflipping where you should not be backflipping. You see, behind each athlete are bike companies and component manufacturers building high tech parts that aim to blend strength with light weight, durability with performance. From brakes to tires, frames to suspension, handlebars to pedals, the amount of time, energy and innovation put into the Bikes of Rampage represents a catacomb of evolution and innovation.
Not to mention, they’re super cool.

So, not one to miss out on the story behind the story, Sterling Lorence embarked on one of his yearly missions: shoot the Bikes of Rampage. Here’s what he found.

Cam Zink 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Cam Zink spent much of Thursday in the hospital having a hematoma drained, but plenty of icing and taping should have him ready to flip his prototype Hyper DH bike off the Oakley Sender on Sunday.

Ryan Howard 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Ryan 'R-Dog' Howard's Trek Session was looking mighty patriotic with its custom stars 'n' bars paint job, red rims, and even color-coordinated housing.

Kelly McGarry 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Kelly McGarry's so tall he barely fit into the photo, but it's the bikes we're focusing on, in this case his Diamondback DH8. An injury in practice at last year's Rampage kept McGarry out of contention, so there's no doubt he's eager for a rematch.

Thomas Vanderham 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Thomas Vanderham is a true freeride veteran, having competed in every single Red Bull Rampage since the event began in 2001. His Rocky Mountain Flatline. decked out in Shimano and Fox components, looks ready for big mountain rowdiness.

Logan Bingelli 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Logan Bingelli will be trying to better last year's 3rd place finish, once again riding a KHS equipped with 650b wheels.

Benderoni 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
This is Kirill "Benderoni" Churbanov's first time in the United States, but he's looking right at home with his Bergamont Straitline Team. His digging time has been spent constructing an open loop for his qualifying run, a feature that hasn't been seen before here in Virgin, Utah.

Mitch Chubey 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Mitch Chubey's carbon Morpheus DH bike shares the same unique dropout configuration as their slopestyle bikes. Chubey's part of the no-chainguide club with Cam Zink, trusting that the thick-thin-thick chainring profile will keep the chain on.

Ramon Hunziker 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Ramon Hunziker and his Trek Session will be trying to improve upon last years 16th place finish.

Paul Basagoitia 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Paul Basagoitia is prepared to dump out a whole bag of tricks during his run, choosing to go with Kona's Entourage due to its tailwhip-ability.

Sam Pilgrim 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
NS Bikes' Fuzz should be a good choice to help Sam Pilgim tackle the wild desert terrain.

Brenden Howey 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Brenden Howey will be hard to miss aboard his Commencal Supreme.

Brendan Fairclough 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
After a year of waiting, Brendan Fairclough finally hit his canyon gap today aboard his Scott Gambler.

Geoff Gulevich 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Geoff Gulevich has a nutty line planned off the top ridge, piloting his Rocky Mountain Flatline directly into the gnar with a 20' double drop followed by a backflip off a 15' stepdown for good measure.

Mike Hopkins 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Mike Hopkins scared everyone last year when he went extra huge on a stepdown on the lower portion of the course, launching it well into the flats. He'll be trying to remain a little closer to the ground this year on his Norco Aurum.

Makken Haugen 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Makken Haugen's all smiles with his Trek Session 9.9.

James Doerfling 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
If anyone knows how to go big it's James Doerfling, shown here with his Knolly Podium.

Andeu Lacondeguy 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Andreu Lacondeguy has been looking comfortable aboard his YT Industries Tues 2.0, showing the moto-inspired style he's known for.

Wil White 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Wil White and his Karpiel Disco Volante are back for their one contest appearance of the year.

Pierre Eduard Ferry 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Pierre Eduard Ferry has been working with Thomas Genon on getting their lines dialed in for the big day.

Kyle Strait s GT 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Kyle Strait's GT Fury was waiting patiently for Kyle to return from his beef jerky snack break.

Thomas Genon 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Thomas Genon staring at the sun with his Canyon DH bike.

Kyle Norbraten 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Norbs and his custom Specialized Demo 8.

Mike Montgomery 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Mike Montgomery chose to go with an Ohlins rear shock-equipped Specialized Enduro Evo with a Manitou Dorado front fork.

Chris Van Dine 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Chris Van Dine is another rider who picks and chooses the events he attends, often appearing at urban downhill races in South America.

Yannick Granieri 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Yannick Granieri has his Polygon Collosus DH 2.0 dialed in and ready to rumble.

Nico Vink 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Nico Vink standing tall with his Scott Gambler.

Graham Agassiz 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Red Bull Rampage is Graham Agassiz's kind of event, and his Kona Carbon Operator should be well suited to the course.

Anton Thelander 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Anton Thelander will be trying to maintain his 'clean lander' reputation during qualifiers and hopefully all the way into finals.

Garett Buehler 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Garett Buehler's not afraid of enormous amounts of air time on his SR Suntour and Cane Creek equipped Knolly Podium.

Mike Kinrade 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Mike Kinrade attended the original Red Bull Rampage, and now he's back with an Evil Undead for another chance to huck himself into history.

Dustin Schaad 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Dustin Schaad and his coil sprung Commencal Supreme are ready to get loose.

Brandon Semenuk
Brandon Semenuk and his Trek Session Park.

Mark Mathews 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Mark Mathews won't be competing this weekend, as a hard crash on Gee's gap resulted in a broken femur.

Antoine Bizet 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Bananas for backflips, Antoine Bizet pounds potassium with his Kona Carbon Operator.

Cam McCaul 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Proud papa Cam McCaul lifts his baby blue Trek Session.

Tom VanSteenberg 2013 RedBull Rampage in Virgin Utah
Tom VanSteenbergen was the first person to hit the mighty canyon gap today on his Transition TR450.

i'd take the Morpheus over the rocky mountain any day
  • 120 4
I hope it's not windy otherwise that Morpheus might blow away to Nevada. Damn thing looks like a giant sail.
  • 25 1
KINRADE! good to see a familiar face. It would be kinda cool seeing one of the 'old boys' take the win. Or Aggy, McCaul, Doerfling, Buehler......

PS where did Paul Bass come from? I haven't seen him around in a while (I may live under a rock)
  • 12 0
 Looks like the old RM7......
  • 4 2
colors are identical to last years sworks demo
  • 22 1
 Kirill Benderoni ftw!

Hope that morpheus snaps on that weak ass looking link to the rear shock

and that guy running 650B wheels ?!? This isn't a time attack race
  • 67 1
@Elanto, one thing is to say the bike is ugly as hell (which in my opinion that's relative) and another thing is to which someone harm. You are one son of a scumbag bitch!

This years rampage is going to be INSANE. Flipping drops, open loops, miniflips. I think this will be a big push forward in big mountain riding.
  • 5 5
Apparently he has other commients with sponsors and didn't have time to prepare this event ... That's what news were saying Frown shame - he's amazing rider !
  • 6 1
holly cow there are a lot of Dorados this year, so stoked to see all the bikes and i cant wait for it to start.
  • 2 0
Yannick you might want to re visit your cable and hose routering, if that hose catches you're in for a fast trip down!
  • 5 4
That Morpheus is really ugly! Is it just me or does it look like the chain will rub through his frame if he is in any other gear other than his lowest? On the other hand Cam McCaul's session looks as perfect as a session can get!
  • 3 1
Well so many sic bikes, including the Morpheus. I like it, but the Knolly, Wilson, Undead, Gambler, Kona C, Straits Gt, Andres YT, love em but no Zerode, would have loved to have seem one here!

you are a bad ass when you are the only rider showing up with single crown fork.
  • 1 0
Aggy is not pre-qualified, he mentioned riding his 2010 line for qualies.
  • 1 3
I don't think aggy is riding?
  • 4 2
 Wheres messere

  • 25 1
Here's to a speedy and full recovery for you!
  • 4 1
I hope you heal quick I broke my femur 16 weeks ago and i've have been able to start riding again
  • 2 0
sad about it. I was looking forward to seeing him shred that place.
  • 19 0
Yea I have a metal rod holding everything together. Everything is numb right now but I'm sure it will get gnarly once I leave the hospital. thanks
  • 1 0
I snapped my femur three weeks ago going over the bars. I got a metal rod too. First two weeks are bad then things feel a lot better. You'll still have two wheel so scoot around on, girls dig a wheelchair !
  • 2 0
@uncompromisable I did the exact same thing and everyone who saw it said it didn't look like a femur breaking crash
  • 1 0
for those of you who have a metal rod, any long term effects ?
  • 1 0
For metal rods I occasionally get knee an hip pain which is fixed by taping but on cold mornings I am quite stiff
  • 1 0
Yeah I use Tape while riding and it works great. Femur breaks aren't the only severe injuries for dh these days at the only race I rode at this year a guy broke his neck, another guy ruptured his spleen and another guy damaged nerves in his back
  • 35 2
 WIL WHITE everybody!

I hope White, Kirill and mike Montgomery all make finals. Their underdog status and/or interesting bike choices intrigue me...
  • 6 8
i want that Karpiel looks sick
  • 1 0
maybe its just me but it looks like wil white using some thin pedals, i want to see how they last for a guy that know as a hucker, and if they last what brand they are?
  • 8 0
 wil is pre-qualified
  • 30 4
I would say i am having ORGASAM about the BIKES however there is NO word that can describe my LOVE for them...
  • 11 1
I thinks this is pure bike porn..
  • 7 2
It's better than porn, and the best part is Im not kidding. Multiple Bikegasms
  • 20 0
Why does Lacondeguy have a BOS rear shock, and why do none of Marzocchi's riders have their new 380 fork? Seems like poor representation from a brand that used to be known for its awesome freeride products.
  • 18 1
"Seems like an obvious thing really, but the almighty bike tends to fly under the radar at hugely publicized events like this. "
Actually we love seeing the bikes and they are one of the things we look forward to seeing.
  • 19 0
So will we see a 36 bikes after rampage blog this year?
  • 31 12

Enough with the robbed comments! Don't jinx him!
  • 17 3
So everyone freaked out when there were enduro bikes at World Champs but now at Rampage people haven't said a thing?
  • 10 0
What enduro bikes? The enduro evo and the operator are park bikes: FR: like DH, but more focused on big tricks than bump reduction, which frankly might be a better choice depending on line selection.
  • 6 0
Ha I was wondering the same! No enduro hate or even 650B smashing. Maybe we can all finally get along!
  • 6 0
maybe people just want to huck it big with what works for them.
  • 14 1
That dude riding the single crown is a champion. :werd:
  • 9 1
sponsors are weird, they take Kirill from far Russia ( very nice! ) and in the same time they are totally skipping huge talent from they own playground - Will White...
  • 11 0
Except they need to advertise their products world-wide so why not sponsor riders internationally?
  • 6 0
world-wide sponsoring is great but it was not what i meant, white just deserve to be a sponsored rider
  • 6 1
I'm sure he could get a few if he wanted to, but he just doesn't seem like that kind of guy, and that's cool
  • 5 0
look at this clip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXYjZY0KrLI it doesn't seem that he is against commercial person. Rampage is one hell tough event and you don't want to have parts which you can't rely on. As far as I remember last year his brakes and rear shock were far from perfect condition but he still managed to get into finals.
  • 3 0
Except bergamont are a German company so much closer to Russia
  • 4 0
He needs a hair do. Else shampoo sponsorship will do.
  • 1 0
uhm, yeah, 1 contest with big media cover a year is a great place to spend pr money...

 and Bass )
  • 5 1
I count 11 bikes with Saint brakes, and there are some pics in which I can't quite make out the brakes. That's 31% of all Rampage bikes rocking Saint brakes... surely higher than any other individual model of brake which says a lot.
  • 3 0
yeah shimanos got deep pockets in every discipline
  • 3 0
yeah, shimano sponsors alot of people and their brakes are apperently good enough to be ridden when free / paid to...
  • 2 3
not that shimano doesnt make a kick ass brake , but compared to formula or magura ...
  • 1 1
Hope gets my money, but to each their own Smile
  • 4 0
 Interesting.
Lots of people on Saint brakes.
Way more SRAM and Boxxers than Fox or Shimano.
Very few single crown forks, even on the slopestyle guys' bikes. I guess stiffness outranks the ability to do the odd tailspin now. Overall this is a big mountain event and the riders should need all the gear they can get.
This will be a major coup for SRAM/XO-1 if these guys get successful chain retention all weekending without tensioners. As a rider I would feel the security of the chainguide would offer some peace of mind.
  • 1 0
also nice to see 26 inch proper wheels
  • 6 0
how nice to see Paul Bass
  • 4 0
We all like watching big tricks hope it would be an other fantastic rampage with no serious injury to any riders and lots of Fun
  • 7 1
Where's Sick Mick Hannah and Stevie Smith?
  • 1 0
 im curious too dude, anyone?
  • 1 0
Stevie said he wasnt riding for whatever reason. And wasnt gee man supposed to be out there?
  • 9 0
they all decided that hucking off of gigantic cliffs in the middle of the desert maybe wasn't the best choice for their racing careers.
  • 3 1
I gotta say I think Norbs' Speshy is the coolest looking of the bunch, even if I am Knolly fan! His ChroMag bear decal is upside down - does that mean he has some plans to make it right side up in photos? And why does he have a bigger rotor in the rear than front?
  • 1 0
May be just the angle, but it looks like he's running some pretty small rotors for rampage...
  • 3 0
Sorry to say this, but am I the only one here to think that Wil White's Karpiel Disco Volante is competing as one of rampage's worst looking bikes? Man, wish he could have a better bike...
  • 6 5
Who needs porn when there's bike porn?! Well, erm, actually, I do, BUT!!! Omg, yummy! Men and bikes! Perfect threesome! Good luck to all riders, especially the Brits! Will be watching through my fingers, as usual! Agghhhh! Can't wait Smile x
  • 4 0
Would not matter what bike I was on riding "Rampage", they would all end up with shit stains on the seat. This is crazy!
  • 5 0
I wanna see how no chain guide performed and also Karpiel Disco Volante Smile
  • 1 0
Why does anyone have a rear derailleur at Rampage? They must need it, but I don't see why. Seems like a single ring with tensioner makes more sense for weight and reliability. Do you really shift on most of those lines? Seems more like up top it is all trying not to fall off before your line and at bottom it is pedal to keep that insane speed up.
  • 4 0
Anyone noticing that Pilgrim has no shifter on his bike?
  • 2 0
You can see the cable tie holding the derailleur in place.... Nice
  • 4 1
the kona operator carbon has to be one of the best looking bikes their for sure!
  • 1 0
Thank you, I'd much rather hear about the bikes and what everybody is running. The riding on the actual day of rampage is very important to me as well. Save your predictions and politics.
  • 4 0
 Sam Pilgrim's NS looks sick!
(but that singlet?)
  • 5 0
 Tyler McCaul?
  • 1 0
Good call... where the hell is TMac?? I'm looking forward to his natural sender (maybe bigger than the sender?) more than almost anything these guys have lined up
  • 3 2
The Evil Undead frames don't have a great reputation on the BDS race circuit. If they can't take the beating they get there, I would be going into the rampage a little nervous if I was on one.
  • 1 0
 What reputation would that be?
  • 1 0
The revolts had a load of problems with cracking and snapping in half (2 died at one race at Moelfre in the compression into finish). The undeads do better, but I know a couple of people who've had issues getting spares when the swingarms cracked. Beautiful frames though. Hopefully the problem frames were the usual first run of the line.
  • 5 1
Norbs may well get robbed - that's a sick looking bike!
  • 2 0
Someone needs to let Kinrade know his chain is too long... or stick the Saint wide ratio adapter on there if he doesn't already.
  • 2 0
Anyone else pumped to see what Paul Bas pulls off on his entourage? Yeeu. I know qualifying is going to be off the hook, I'm gonna be on the edge of my seat for finals!!
  • 3 0
Gee Atherton?? Is he not competing anymore?
  • 7 0
Can't due to a knee operation
  • 1 0
I was wondering why he was able to do the fox hunt if he needed work done? Not that those are similar events, but still.. Just curious?
  • 4 0
Its an ankle operation, on the same ankle that he damaged during last years Rampage, he's effectively done the whole season with a busted ankle.
  • 4 0
 poor Marky Mathews
  • 1 0
Nice showing all around for the fork makers. But where is the green glint of a DVO offering? Seems like they could have put something together for this event.

 One Big Question.
Why the Marzocchi sponsored riders are not testing the new 380 fork and the Moto C2R Shock?
  • 1 1
I would give mad respect to Bingelli if he three'ed that 650b. He flipped once or twice last year and strait aired everything else.. kinda a lame run considering he was saying 650B is a "man" size wheel.
  • 2 0
two consecutive backflips on his final run, plus multiple backflips during practices, his most serious failure was a blown tube all week. They already explained last year that its no longer just about the biggest trick, you also have to have speed AND actually stick the landings. Consistency means more than showmanship now. Its not like extreme sailboarding where its all about the height you get off the waves and damn the landing part.

lots of carbon but no carbon rims?
  • 1 0
I'm not aware of anyone making a free ride specific carbon rim. Race rims look for strength/ weight balance. Too small of a market to make a fr carbon rim.

nobody needs clips here! this is truly MTB! but if one of my downhill friends was invited, i bet they will ride clips because it helps to manage the bike.. ahahh
  • 9 10
SOOO many sessions.. Even ones with Kona (and Norco) stickers!!
  • 7 2
Oh no, every bike with front triangle, seat and double crown for looks like Trek Session 88/9.X. Trek should pat. it.
Mate, Kona is following design that they were using previously at their Dh/FR bikes (Stab and Stinky). Look at Trek Diesel or Trek session 10. They had no 4 beam kind of suspenssion, no curved down tube, or curve "seat" tube. Kona was using 4 beam suspension in DH bikes since 1996 (maybe earlier), curved "seat" tube since 1999, cuved down tube since 2006 And those are only similarities that I can see. First Session 88 came up at 2008.
Shitty Kona Operator graphics is also different from Trek's.
But you are a hater and haters don't use logic... And probably don't understand geometry, cause it is tottaly different on these bikes.
  • 2 0
are you referring to Thomas Misser's TURNER Burner with Kona stickers??
  • 1 0
So would you say 'asthetically' the Operator looks like: A) 2008 Trek session 88 or B) 2008 Kona Stab?
  • 1 0
So would you say 'asthetically' the 2008 Trek session 88 looks like: A) 2007 Trek session 10 or B) 2007 Kona Stab?
And no, I am not talking about TURNER Burner.
  • 3 6
Haha, so, how many marzocci forks will snap this year? Also, it'll be interesting to see how the suntour Knolly bikes perform
  • 4 2
I said this last time but... A large proportion of riders last time out were on Marzocchis, including the 3 that happened to have massive front end impacts. If they were anything smaller than a MX fork they still would have snapped
  • 2 2
 Totems would've held...
  • 3 1
src248: Knolly + suntour RUX took 6th place on the hands of James Doerfling. I hope to see him in the top 3 and Buehler in the finals. Also interested to see what will Graham do this year.

Can't say anything about Marzocchi, don't own any of their products.
  • 2 2
Lets not forget doerfling snapped his totem back in 2010. Zokes 4 life!!!
  • 3 0
 Totem? don't you mean 888?
  • 1 1
Yeah my bad. I was thinking of someone else.
  • 1 2
Sam pilgrim is my bet for the win
  • 4 6
