some of them look like they have never thrown up a middle finger in there lives, someone got to go to vegas to take pics and this is what they came up with? come on this shit was not even funny in skate vids form the 90's. I would rather the assignment be to take pics of the back of there heads and let us try to guess whos who or even better show us the goods from the show. ill stick to TMZ for my star sightings
I'm glad I'm not the only one unimpressed. I thought, "Am I just uptight and old-fashioned?" Why would you ask people to symbolically say "F U" to their respecting fans, even as a joke?
Seriously guys? Punk rock, heavy metal, middle finger up if you don't give a f*ck.. Sounds like mountain biking to me. Maybe not some bullshit, over done,"i shaved 12.1 grams with the carbon derailleur and got a new pack this season because the one i got last season doesn't match my bike and kit," techno infused idea of MTB, but a New World Disorder version, hell yeah.
Point in case, if you don't like it, don't whinge and bitch about it (and don't tell me you're not because you f*cking are), just take your over the top, political correctness and go elsewhere.
And be sure to fill out one of these on your way out. Cheers
getting pros to give the finger is as punk rock as a pre ripped sex pistols shirt or someone forwarding a lame survey, im sure you hit the PCP before you hit the trails to keep it punk rock?
Not going to lie we are complaining. I opened this article about interbike, hoping to see some bikes or some cool new gear. However, first picture was Delorean, great start! Then what followed were 11 pictures of people with their middle fingers up. It's not cool, it's not "don't give a f*ck", not all of them gave a f*ck they were just asked to do it, half of them don't even look like they want to. I'm pretty sure I don't need to give an offensive (to some) hand gesture to be classified as a mountain biker?
I wasn't talking about the connection between punk rock and putting the middle finger up, it was the whole mountain biking "you need to stay in school, you can't ride here, thats dangerous, you left a mark on the footpath outside my house." but you're right, if i see one more 16 year old girl in a Nirvana shirt and she doesn't know who Krist Novoselic is, im going to push her off a cliff.
Roaarrrrrr fuck yeah heavy metal roaarrrrr, give the finger to the earth because we so Metal bro! Not just Metal, Heavy Metal biatch! Insult the world roaarrr fuck yeah heavy metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ukno whut I'm sayin'
Just looks like people trying too hard to be cool. If I had to pick between acting like a teenager and throwing up the middle finger up all the time, or being GQ cool like Daniel Craig in a kickass suit, I'd take GQ cool all the time. Plus the women dig that shit WAY more. Why do people think "XTREME!" sports all need to fit into a certain stereotype?
Not speaking as a mod here but having taken those photographs (someone giving you the finger) also, its not just a Marcus Riga thing, lots of photogs end up with that sort of photos in their portfolio eventually, there are whole websites dedicated to it. Its become trendy, especially in america among celebrities and pseudo-celebs to do it.
So did George W Bush, and he really meant it, look at how he screwed over America while in office.
Tony Alva was probably the first pro athlete to do it. Teenage existential angst I guess.
Voicing my distaste too, thought I was maybe missing the point but glad to see I am not the only one not impressed.
The Tarek Rasouli and Anthony Messere photo provoked a totally different facial expression from me than the rest. It made me smile, by the end of the rest of the portraits I found myself with a sort of unimpressed expression on my face.
Mountain Biking is not about punk rock and not giving a fuck. It's about having a good time and just generally being buzzing, that's what the Tarek Rasouli and Anthony Messere photo shows. Poor photojournalism from a photographer whose work I usually enjoy viewing none of these Interbike daily randoms have impressed me, too much black in the shadows of virtually every single image and it's mainly peoples faces that are in the shadows, I get that it's real sunny and people are wearing caps but still... Perhaps stick to the race and riding stuff.
You guys are seriously all going out of your way to complain about a bunch of photos of riders giving the middle finger? God damn, go worry about something else you pussies. This is honestly the stuff that offends you and gets you all wadded up? Who are you people?
Same people who apparently get offended over wheelsize, geometry, and prices of bikes they're not going to be buying anyway... oh and logic...can't have any of that being rewarded.
deeeight thanks for your opinion, but shouldn't you be actually moderating and stuff? For once the Pinkbike community responds intelligently and maturely and they get called pussies? Ha.
Except in this case, by the very fact that this was published it means it's already gone past the editors who approved it, for it to be a news item on the main page. Thus there's nothing to moderate. The photographs are within the artistic license of the photographer.
Was more talking about some of the comments on the article which you seem to be encouraging rather than moderating. In any case, whatever. Pinkbike has a reputation for a reason.
And again there's been discussions already on what is allowed and what isn't. And anybody who crosses the line will be dealt with accordingly, but if you mean for example, s4nt4cruz's comment, its not over the line because he's not attacking anyone specific.
Deeeight, people are only voicing their distaste at a gesture most people wouldn't be bothered by in a single photo but in 10 photos, 9 of them consecutive, it becomes a different sort of animal. Claiming everyone voicing their own opinion as the "Same people who apparently get offended over wheel size, geometry, and prices of bikes they're not going to be buying anyway" is pretty immature for a 41yr old moderator, I would expect that from a 15yr old kid. They are nothing alike, the comparison you have made with the discussion taking place.
And they're welcome to do so (voice their opinions), but its out of my hands, I'm following prior instructions on the matter. And I tried several times pointing out the history of the gesture, that photographers regularly have them in their portfolios, and that politicians and others do it, and all I got was negative props out of the comment showing. Hence my pointing out that logic is trumped by the masses every time here. Just as happens repeatedly in reviews of bikes. I could have easily not posted at all and just ignored the whole photo essay but I decided to chime at first as someone who is also a photographer, with logic, and that got me nowhere. Incidently calling me names isn't helping your case.
deeeight, it's not a matter of logic, it's a matter of feelings. I'm far from being prude or uptight (hey, I'm French!) but this finger thing makes us (or me, at least) feel like it's directed at us -- like if all these good people were saying "f*ck you" to the readers. I know it was not the point, but in the end, vox populi, vox dei, as one says. You have to recognize this one is a fail.
Guess all the good photographic memes like "planking", "Tebowing", "hadoukening", "teapotting" & "oh long johnsoning" have already been thought up & played out & this is all that's left. :/
Comments in this section have me feeling encouraged. I'm glad to find I'm not the only one here who thinks this trend is immature, annoying, and slightly offensive. Also, I am at work. Most of us do work and try to glance at PB when no one is looking, right? If someone sees a bike on my screen- no big deal. A bunch of middle fingers, though? That's not good for anybody.
GET BACK TO WORK!!!
Just kidding. A fairly pointless post though.
And it's nice to see PB going out of its way to not ostricise or objectify women and make them feel involved by referring to them as 'babes'... unless they're not 'hot', in which case, we'll just ingore them.
They didn't even MENTION KAT SWEET IN THE THE PHOTO CAPTION OF HER AND RICHIE SCHLEY. WTF! She does SO MUCH for women's riding! IS IT BECAUSE SHE'S NOT A "BABE"?!?!? PFFFFFFFT
I often log onto PB with my young boys as they are really into the biking scene. One less site I can take them to with confidence now. Clearly PB is trying to appeal to a very, very narrow demographic now.
I too find this offensive and inconsistant to my experience with pro mountain bikers. In real life I have found these people to be good role models for kids. This post shows them to be nothing more than the other trash that kids see on TV and the internet. The pros don't give anyone the finger intending to offend them. These photographs are out-of-context and don't contribute to the image we want as mountain bikers where we are not like those "other guys". We are in it for the fun and we go out of our way to support others. I hope I never see this gangster crap on PB ever again.
That whole "you're sheltering your kids when they're going to go out into the world and see much worse" is a silly argument if you think about it. Assuming there are things out there that are "bad" and will have a negative impact on people as they grow up, it's not really any different than trying to feed your kid healthy food. Just because my child can go eat a steady diet of mountain dew and donuts when he's off to college doesn't mean I'm not going to try to teach him to eat healthy as long as he's in my house eating my food.
Listen, you can raise your kids however you want, it is none of my business. But in this case it would be closer to trying to hide pictures of Mountain Dew cans from your children, while on the weekend they are downing gallons of Bacon Grease and eating Pizza with a donut filled crust.
Everyone is so goody two shoed on this site it is absured.
^^be sure to let us know when you have kids, we will come have a party where we will screen "violent porn" and flip your kids off for our entertainment. more we will expose pretty much all of the uglies that are out there to your kids. happy fathering!
I'm not one to post comments on these things, but feel its necessary to say that the middle finger theme is pretty lame. Being a Dad to an up n coming 13 yr old rider, who comes home from school and looks at PB every single day, I usually don't need to filter the site. Yeah, I'm sure he's seen and possibly even done worse, but to see it as a norm for some of his heros to obviously be asked to pose with the care free / FU attitude, I just feel you guys are better than that. I've been to interbike and know the vibe, you guys should just keep that as it is and not try to convert it to a photo journal. Obviously I'm not the only one who feels this way. Hell, until this link, I've been so pumped and surprised with how cool, clean and all about simply letting the riding do the talking has been the theme in the bicycle world. Theres a time and a place and that is at the afterparty at Interbike, not on this website.
I don't understand why this middle finger thing is considered funny or cool. It's Interbike, all of the effort put into these photos is a big waste of time, and could be better spent providing more product info and informing the public that can't be there. This makes all mountain bikers look like uneducated white trash.
Gary Holt shreds just as hard as Jeff. He IS a worthy replacement. Go out and buy "tempo of the damned" by Exodus and you'll agree. And bikesrlame, Slayer will never die!
Gary Holt isn't the problem. The fact that the entire band seems to be beholden to Kerry King's ego is. Since Jeff wrote some of their most popular songs, he probably was the last person left who could call Kerry on his BS, since Tom seems content to just collect a paycheck and threaten to retire semi-regularly.
Same could be said for Pantera. Imo Phil was its downfall. Plus drowning out back pain with a bottle of wild turkey doesn't help either. Its amazing all of these guys livers didn't give out long ago. Anyways, HAIL TRUE METAL!!
Margus, you owe me some copyright action! I have all these same dudes flipping me off at the 1st Crankworks CO like 5 years ago but I was cool and didn't upload them here.
Coverage of a bike show.... and I think I could just make out the faint shadow of bike in the fourth picture.
If I wanted to see a bunch of people sticking their finger up I'd go back to work.
Hopefully the coverage of Interbike improves from here.
The real question is, which middle finger do you deliver when necessary: The Cam Zink version? The Greg Watts version? the Chubey version? Or the Cam McCaul version?
I'm more of a Cam McCaul version of the middle finger kind of guy.
Sporting the right gear here and there doesn't make a photographer good. In the end the choice of "what to shoot" it his . Hard to believe PN actually endorses such crap. Tbh, the album wreaks of douchebaggery . That may be fine with the yolo swag people but most of the cyclist i know would are decent , well behaved guys
Given how much she's contributed to actively getting women into mountain biking, I'm thinking Kat Sweet deserves to be credited in the photo with Schley.
Attaway, Ms. Sweet.
All websites go hot for a while then disappear. i can remember sites like hcore .net. everone was on it then disappeared. Well, after seeing this Ithink pinkbike has had its day and time to disappear. They have been going down the tubes for a while now. And became too corporate with their bike company bias reviews. Sorry to see such a good site at one time get bought up and go so corporate. So now who is the next hot website? Who will it be?
Is the finger super offensive in the states? People are losing their shit about seeing it in a photo. And claiming that you're "really disappointed" in PB for running this article - I think a few people might be a wee bit too obsessed with reading about other peoples lives online. Get over your hurt little feelings - the photog was clearly just taking the piss, accept it in the spirit it was given.
I don't understand all the whining? This was probably requested by the Pinkbike editor, I'm sure not everyone flicked their middle finger when asked by the photographer, but those are the pictures they chose. They are just pictures of a bunch of people with their finger in the air, which doesn't have the mean "f*ck you" if you don't want it to. The way I see it, its just like "hey, give me a badass look!" And they're having fun doing it. Why don't you all go tell you're moms and dads so they can write a letter to Pinkbike to complain. And don't watch too much TV or videos cause you could see some finger flicking. Oh and don't forget to brush your teeth before going to bed kids!!!! LOL
This whole post/blog about Interbike 2013 was pointless, and needless:/ Why bother positing a blog/post of Interbike, in which almost every photo contains the 'middle finger' and nothing at all about bikes.
It's like people who use "F*%k" in every sentence. Nothing funny about it... just a simple lack of creative intelligence. Fortunately for all of us these people won't be running the world anytime soon. Grow up Pinkbike.
Another way to look at this 'critical thinking' argument that most people dismiss is....
Margus Riga has fooled you all!
Some of the best methods to get an audience to engage with an online entity is to create content that is controversial. To his credit this pinkbike post has generated 140 user comments within one day from a few photos with controversial content. I chalk this up as a success for Margus Riga.
Now if this somehow made it to mainline news like CNN or WSJ I might be a little upset at how these images portray this beautiful sport of which I am overly passionate about. However, as it is on a mountain bike website amongst the mountain bike community I will hold judgement until I see this pop up on a major news syndicate.
End message is: Don't be so serious and take a piece of content for what it is meant to be....entertaining, inspirational or educational
I agree with you in that often great art creates controversy and discussion. I just hope this is not the slippery slope where our sport degenerates into something like the other bicycle sports, motorsports and "professional" sports in general. I see pro mountain bikers high-fiving each other, coming to each other's aid in a crash and being generally good citizens, just like us everyday bikers. I sincerely hope that the gangsta "me first, up yours" mentality does not take over.
Yeah i get it maybe wasn't the most appropriate but still its a joke, and just like really... everybody on here has given someone the finger at one point or another?
I have but its usually if someone cut me off in my car or if l want to express FU or if someone upset me. Besides, the bird lacks imagination and its cliche. Maybe, im hypersensitive but l dont care for crude antisocial expressions.
I would rather the assignment be to take pics of the back of there heads and let us try to guess whos who or even better show us the goods from the show.

Counselling will be provided by Pinkbike.
you are not complaining, what you and a whole bunch of others have done is some good ol fashioned critical thinking.
the world and the mtb industry need ALOT more critical thinkers and ALOT less sheeple.
stoked to see so many people speaking up.
Once the majority of them hit 40 years old the world will be giving them that finger back, with interest.
Like the kid in the bike movie says, "in ten years I'll be nobody". Enjoy it fellas. All of it.
What up Kat Sweet.

I did not like this picture session and l hope PB never does this again.
Also, I am at work. Most of us do work and try to glance at PB when no one is looking, right? If someone sees a bike on my screen- no big deal. A bunch of middle fingers, though? That's not good for anybody.
They are probably on the internet right now watching violent porn and mexican cartel videos of people getting their heads cut off with chainsaws.
And bikesrlame, Slayer will never die!
Shred in peace Jeff.
