Norco's Radical Prototype DH Bike - First Look

Sam Blenkinsop on a prototype Norco DH bike

Is This Blenkinsop's New DH Bike?

Norco's Sam Blenkinsop was recently spotted in the Whistler Bike Park aboard what looks to be a brand new downhill bike from the Canadian company that's a drastic departure from their long-standing Aurum DH rig. And while merely seeing Blenkinsop on the bike doesn't mean that we're looking at the Aurum's replacement, the fact that the front triangle, and apparently the rear as well, is made using carbon fiber says that Norco is relatively committed to the design you see here.

What's new? Everything, it seems, as it's obvious even in these grainy cellphone photos that this bike represents a wholesale change from the Aurum and its 'A.R.T.' Horst Link suspension layout that delivers 200mm of travel.

The prototype's single pivot, linkage-activated design features an extremely high main pivot that sits well above the height of Sam's chainring, and an integrated pulley / chain guide setup routes the chain up high to run around the main pivot. The bike would have a large amount of chain growth / pedal kickback / anti-squat if the chain weren't routed in this way.

Remember when Sam was running a very non-production high idler pulley setup on his Aurum, pictured to the right, earlier this year?
Sam Blenkinsop s modified Aurum.
Blenkinsop was running a modified Aurum at the New Zealand Nationals last January. Note the idler pulley that routes the chain high above the main pivot.

When questioned about that back in January, Owen Pemberton, Norco's Senior Design Engineer, had this to say: ''What you are looking at is just a part of our ongoing Norco Race Development program. That setup on Sam's bike is purely an information gathering exercise at this time.'' Information gathering for this new design, apparently.

An integrated idler pulley routes the chain up and over the bike's main pivot.

If you think that the basic layout looks a bit like a carbon fiber version of Commencal's Supreme DH V4 downhill machine, you wouldn't be wrong. The high pivot is in a similar (but not the same) location, and the integrated idler pulley setup on the swingarm is also somewhat comparable. Small differences in pivot locations can create drastically varying performance characteristics, however, and the prototype Norco's linkage system is distinctly different to the Supreme DH V4's that compresses its shock from below.

This is reversed on the Norco, with its pull-link activating a rocker that compresses the bike's shock from above. The linkage, which is unrefined and clearly far from being set in stone, is very different from the V4, despite the bike appearing to be similar from afar.

again... only reason bikes look like sessions is cause Trek has tried every type of suspension linkage possible, making really every bike look like one of the many different sessions... Trek still hasn't figured it out...

Ra'chel atherton to a prefect season, and the countless reviews staing the bike is among the top 3 best dh bikes ever. No they defintly havent "figured " it out yet.

In knowing that, it's not the same bike.

As that being said, watching Pinkbike, you would know that Trek has a new proto DH frame that has been spotted. Always looking for that edge. Constant refinement/advancement.

@teschenbrenner: 2012 Sony hdr-cx760. Its about 3 times the size of a GoPro. It has a Gimbal built into the camcorder. Also, $1200 new in 2012. I'm sure they can be picked for a few hundred used now that 4K is the hot ticket. It has breakaway mounts in lieu of duct tape (that I tested with a crash on Dirt Merchant). • 7 3
@makripper: how can a shock be compressed and 'pulled' at the same time? if you mean the shock pivots at the bottom on a type of rocker then yes, this creates the rearward travel that us jedi owners are so hyped on, as to the guy mentioning carbon fiber jedis, just NO, jedis are huck bikes at heart, its one of the heaviest bikes i own besides a purgatory and im happy with every gram!

Could it be a marketing strategy to send Sam B to whistler with the new bike. "take your time at the bottom and just try to stand to the side a little bit"
  • 28 1
Certainly not unheard of. They wouldn't be in the WBP and the bike wouldn't have a big Norco decal on it if it was actually top secret.
  • 8 0
@mikelevy: also saw one up one of the local mountains in van last weekend in an "enduro" set up with a 36, 1x11 & dropper. Looked pretty badass! Also the carbon looked quite refined and finished for an early stage proto.
  • 2 0
Spotted SC doing that a few years back. Had a few identical unlabelled carbon bikes, unrefined suspension linkages, and multiple shocks covered in masking tape and writing. Guys in full SC branded riding gear were frantically swapping shocks on the GLC patio. They also claimed the bikes weren't the 27.5 Nomad. ????
  • 5 0
Yeah, Was sitting not far from Sam today and he wasn't shy about showing the bike around. He was talking about how much he was liking it loud and clear.
  • 12 4
@mikelevy: this bike isn't exactly revolutionary so there's little to hide. It's not like it may wreck the sales of other companies. Look, it has rear derailleur...
  • 6 2
@WAKIdesigns: The only reason I read this article was the hope that Norco had been brave and used a gearbox.... sigh, sigh, oh well, I guess we will have to a few more decades...
  • 5 3
@fartymarty: if Pinkbike calls that radical then the industry as well as the audience are creeping along the innovation plateau shouting: we are the fastest! we are the baddest!
  • 2 0
@brycepiwek: I think that what you saw a few weeks ago is the new range prototype. Cause norco is showing us this beauty in Feb.2017!
  • 5 0
@DoctorWatson: Don't be silly, it's a new Ellsworth with 1350 wheel base and 520 reach for the Small. The Norco logo is just a mean of deliberate deception.
  • 4 2
@WAKIdesigns: exactly. Why design a 2017 dh bike that needs a derailleur?
  • 2 0
@fartymarty: go internal geared hub like Zerode G bikes or SuperCo proto for DH. High single pivot. Idler pulley.
Gearbox for AM/EN applications.
  • 1 1
@fartymarty: Too heavy for WC DH.
  • 2 1
@CaptainSnappy: Not the new smaller pinions. Also the loss of unsprung weight and pedal kickback would make the suspension work better (ie Gwins chainless run).
  • 1 0
@fartymarty: techy tech, if you watch his run from skills perspective, you'll see that he nails each freaking corner, he doesn't overcook a single one, always enters high and exits low, carrying out loads of speed. A striking thing is how hard he brakes. Others fly around a bit, he rails everything. Both Dirt and GMBN mention how riding chainless makes you look for speed by pumping features and be extremely careful before you chose to ram into something just because suspension can take it.
  • 1 0
@CaptainSnappy: I wouldn't say the Zerode is too heavy for World Cup use, they won a few consecutive privateer world cup overalls.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: agreed on the change in mentality when riding chainless and his charging but he did say to Brosnan he was surprised how better the bike was without a chain (queue @protour). That probably accounts for the 0.045 seconds he won by. This is worth ar read www.therodfather.co.nz/news/2016/9/22/zerode-taniwha on the benefits of less weight on the rear.
  • 2 1
@fartymarty: Gwin's chainless run is one thing, no rear mech and no cassette hanging off the rear axle is another. Protours point is irrelevant here because according to his theory of Demos forward axle path, there should be no chain growth. Then rearward axle path of a bike like Commencal, increases chain growth a lot, thus making drivetrain interact with the suspension more.

X01 DH Cassette wieghs 135g, X01 rear mech 257g. That gives us like 300g of unsprung weight saving compared to a gearboxed bike. In Enduro cassettes are bigger, with Eagle going full retard at 370g. In such case gearbox saves 500g!!! on the rear
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: removing 392g (if my maths is right) of unsprung weight is still significant irrespective of the type of bike.

I am not overly familiar with @protours comments but know hes not a fan of the Demo. Off topic but I sketched through its axle path and the wheelbase gets 40mm shorter at full travel.
  • 1 0
@fartymarty: the rear cog for pinion will weigh something so you can't count it out completely as cassette+rear mech, I gave them the benefit of doubt Smile No clue how much does pinion rear hub weigh.
  • 1 0
 @mikelevy: thanks for the response

high single pivot linkage driven. Looks like a..., copied off a.... , no, this layout has been around since the 80's every single pivot is just an adjustment of an MX linkage. Doesnt mean itll perform anything like a similar looking linkage though.

@WolfStoneD: I know, I still ride one set up as an AM rig.. and its still fairly competitive on AM/DH tracks. #26aintdead

although i can only really pedal it 750 or so meters of vertical before I die in a heap.. I have modern bikes for that stuff. I just love riding the old girl.
  • 3 0
I still can't figure out why someone doesn't run a bottom bracket with a sprocket on each side through that main pivot as a prop-shaft. Chain comes off the ND side of the crank, to the ND side of the prop-shaft, to the Drive side of the prop shaft, then another chain back to the cassette. Would prevent all that chain growth and having to take up slack w/ the derailleur...
  • 2 0

Please Norco don't put this in production before I can get one with the current suspension design! 2017 paint job's are too simple and I don't really understand why you want to change the rear suspension design, it's one of the best rear end's I have ridden!

It looks pretty flexy/pretty easy to side load that main pivot, as massive as it looks. Tho if it can handle Blenkis abuse I'm sure it's stiff enough for us mere mortals.
  • 4 1

 @hairy1976: Better cornering.
  • 3 1
seems some brands are going with linkage driven single pivots lately. simplicity? cost? any engineers/product mgrs want to chime in?
  • 5 0
because really high single pivots (and bikes with lots of chain growth) work really well at bump absorption and have a bucket load of anti squat (talking high single pivots) built into them without the need for chain tension.

The idler removes pedal kickback and counteracts chain growth (you can actually pedal through rock gardens on flats).

Yes im a convert, I still have a balfa bb7 (as well as plenty of modern rigs including the new antidote carbon jack when it arrives)
  • 4 0
Cause you can ride through rock gardens almost sitting down, the rearward travel does away with square edge hits. Wouldn't ride any other design apart from one with a gearbox..
  • 2 0
My $0.02: As the best lines on WC DH courses are notably rougher (stumps, bigger rocks, etc.) good bump absorption for the fastest line is becoming more critical to getting on the podium, and out of Emerg.

We saw it a few times as he was lapping most of the day. Really nice looking bike but I wonder if the rear suspension works with the rear brake on?
  • 3 0
Why would Norco invest serious R&D $ to design, build & test a carbon WC-capable DH bike if the rear sus didn't work while braking? I strongly suspect brake jack is virtually a non-issue.
  • 2 0
yes works perfect on this design, theres a small amount of rear squat which I find helps balance the bike with heavy front braking..

  • 2 2
in this day and age you cant get a design together without an idler pulley? you're currently using a horst link but that too needs an older? color me confused.
  • 4 0
A high pivot allows for the rear wheel to move rearwards as the suspension compresses which is great for soaking up the hits but requires an idler to prevent chain growth.
  • 5 0
Why does the world still think the idler pulley is some stone age carry over?? It's simple geometry within simple physics.
And I love how it's one companies "radical new prototype" when it's been Canfeild Brothers standard for a decade. Lame. The C-Bros and their followers have just been too busy effortlessly destroying rock gardens to try to hype up a long proven system.
