Luca Shaw v10
We're so used to seeing white and black V10's being built up with parts from FOX and Shimano, but here's Walker Shaw's SRAM powered Santa Cruz that the speedy junior will be aboard this weekend.

Pink is in
Tracey Hannah's new pink on black Polygon, complete with e*thirteen's new chain guide.

A set of custom Hellcat's for the speedy Australian.

e13 carbon rims
e*thirteen have their prototype carbon wheels ready to be mounted onto the Polygon team bikes.
e13 carbon rims
Carbon rims aren't quite as common on race day, especially on a rocky, wheel-eating track like Fort William, so it will be interesting to see the team's choice come Sunday.

New paint on Bergamont
Eddie Master's Bergamont Straitline has a new paint job. Hopefully the broken collarbone he sustained at Crankworx in New Zealand won't hold him back this weekend.

It's makes me laugh how people bang on about carbon been better, lighter, stronger, faster etc than anything else. Then you see a statement that most teams won't run the carbon rims in the race due to fort bill being too rocky!!! Now go on please tell me aaaaaallllllll the excuses.......

It's better to dent a rim than to get a flat tyre. Carbon doesn't dent, so you're more likely to get a flat
  • 9 4
 Sorry I meant @bigburd....predictive text
  • 27 6
 Excuse number 1:
You can dent the shit out of an ali rim and it'll hopefully still get you to the finish line. Then be binned straight away. A carbon rim will not dent, even with a hit that would dent an ali rim. Sounds good right? However hit it and bit harder and it will go from absolutely fine to tangled mess in half an second. Basically a carbon rim is far more likely to make it to the finish line unscathed, when it does go wrong, it goes very badly wrong. Stronger, lighter, faster yes. just not very good at limping home.

Don't hold this to me but it looks like Gwin's new linkage is cnc'd from ali and this technology won him a world cup over the carbon linkage.
  • 10 0
it doesnt really matter what rims you use at Fort William. its generally accepted that after a few runs, if not a single race run most runs are really for scrap.
  • 11 13
carbon rims are also I lot harsher than ali rims witch leads to more fatigue Smile
  • 34 6
Gwin made it down with no tyre half way of leogang track on 500g alu rim, that is same weight as Enve DH rim. To the terror of some sure footed people, Carbon is going towards the through of disillusionment. Gee won world champs twice on alu bikes. Fibers are good at cleaning the gut
  • 7 6
aluminum and alloys have been perfecteced and worked with for soooo long that they are a fine art, i'm not saying carbon isn't of high quality, but it is newer in terms of use, so it isn't nearly as perfected, hence why aluminum is:
1. cheaper
2. about as light if high quality
3. about as strong if high quality
4. more able to take a beating and not get completely f*cked the f*ck up
5. better.

there is a reason why the Gwin man himself rides EX471's on 350s. its simple, and its light, and its strong and its good. do you not think Gwin could have any sponsor he wants? any wheel he wants? there are reasons he rides Alu.
  • 11 1
He's on 240's. C'mon, you think the Gwinner is gonna run anything but the best?

 really? 240's?
  • 17 0
They're significantly lighter, made in Switzerland and come stock with stainless ABEC 5 bearings. The 350's are a Taiwanese made product that's heavier and runs normal bearings.
  • 3 0
@gabriel-mission9 I'd not be too sure about the tangled mess in half a second. I have managed to crack a carbon rim (after ruining a long line of alu rims regularly), and I still finished my run on it - and not a mellow one, only finding out about the crack by leaking air from my tyre. I did ride it harder than I usually do though, guess that came from overconfidence from the new bike. Still pretty happy running carbon rims. I'd imagine it's not for everyone, but they seem to hold up way better than alu rims for me.

I agree with most the comments on here and its nice too see a sensible outlook on the subject

Some of you my know from my other comments elsewhere on here that I really dislike carbon. The reason why is that for the last 2 or 3 years bike companies and their marketing teams have been ramming the stuff down our throats that it's better, lighter, stronger, faster than all the other materials. Well I've got news for them its not!! Carbon is just an alternative material and there is absolutely nothing wrong with Aluminium, Steel or titanium. All meterials have their pros and cons but I am sick to death of them constantly banging on that carbon is a solution to all the other meterials faults...again it's not.

A similar thing has happened with wheel size. For 20 years, like many people, I've been riding and racing 26" wheels. Over the past 2-3 years we've have been led to believe by the industry that 26" wheels are the work of the devil, that no bike is rideable with anything below 650b. Again it's bullshit.

Anyway that's my take on things...right or wrong.
  • 12 10
Enves weigh 500g? Have never really looked into it as they cost more than my car, but I assumed they were lighter. So the only advantage is that they are tougher, with the pay off being that they are overly stiff and likely to explode one day. Hmm. Now they seem even less worth it.
I totally agree that carbon is simply an alternative material. A very good alternative, but not magically best for every application. There is still a very long way to go with carbon and I believe it will improve dramatically and drop in price over the next 5 years.

Oh and one more thing. 26 yes. 29 yes. 27.5 can piss off.

Team Robot got fibers into his vagina because he rides a V10 and we are sceptical about carbonfayber
  • 4 0
I've used both and personally like the carbon better. I'm more of a finesse rider than a hack, and the lack of maintenance is a big plus with the carbon. Carbon wheels almost never need truing, if built with proper and even spoke tension. I've had some medical issues this past two years and with my weight up (from medications) to 300lbs, I still haven't broken a carbon product. I'm 6'3" and built like a linebacker. My fit weight is 240-250lbs. If you break carbon, you would have smashed aluminum. For riders in rocky areas, get a rim with a kevlar layer. Amazing impact resistance, or even mix graphite fibres in the resin. Its what boat builders do to improve impact resistance.

On the other hand, I am really liking steel bicycles. With modern butted tubing, weight is about on par with aluminum, with better fatigue resistance than aluminum.
  • 4 0
I've used both, hence I know how little I win, compared to how much more I spend, and I am talking cheap carbon. Enve is ridiculous, even if they were indestructible, I wouldn't pay even a half. Cheapest second hand wheels with Enve that I have ever seen costed double of what I paid for brand new Hope/Pillar aero/LIght Bicycle. Now the LB carbon rim costs double of the super expensive (as for alu standards) Ryde Tracer rim. so we have Enve M90 at 800Ā£ and Superstar DS25 at 30Ā£.
  • 2 1
if they were indestructible i'd pay 2K for a wheelset... just so i could really fuck em up and not worry, but they do break... sooooo.
  • 5 1
In my entire life, and on all my bikes, from BMX's to road bikes i have probably spent a total of about Ā£1000 on wheels. Not including tyres, tubes, cassettes, discs etc.

So thats my entire life of enjoying bikes, or one enve rim......

Saying that if they were actually indestructible, I would buy a pair like a shot.

Then get really really angry when 26.75967" becomes the new standard next tuesday.
  • 7 1
You argue that all materials have plus and minus points . . . . But then go on to just say carbon is basically rubbish. Seems hypocritical somewhat. It has plus and minuses like all the other materials that could be used. Your anger seems to just come from the fact it is currently very popular. As in, you know, a trend. And that whatever your material of choice is is not currently seen as the 'golden child' of the scene.

Were you up in arms when titanium rolled in as a saviour decades ago? Or when steel was told to make way for alloys? It is the exact same thing now.
  • 1 4
 @mgolder
Who argued that all materials have their +&- points then said carbon was shit? I sure didn't....
  • 3 1
@gabriel-mission9 Bit tetchy aren't you? Given I can only click reply to the OP, I guess that means it was him I was replying to.
  • 4 5
@mgolder Titanium has never been a savious so that is bullshit for a start. My anger comes from that fact that carbon has been rammed down our throats as if it's a solution not an alternative. Obviously unlike you I'm not a sheep and see through the total hype and marketing bullshit. It's an alternative product not a saviour sent to save all the other materiels from thier sins!!
  • 4 1
@matt76 titanium was a material bikes lusted after for years!! Until alu and suspension got better. From the 90's till the early 00's. Nothing wrong with carbon, ti, alu or steel. They are all options. Stop bieng a whiner.
  • 4 1
I shall buy Titanium frame at some point in my life. It looks magical, it's like a samurai sword to me. Vast majority of carbon frames look and feel at touch whatever to me, particularly Santa Cruz ones. Mine at least looks like there is carbon fibre under the clear coat. First white carbon Nomad is light years ahead the latest one when it comes to aesthetics. Sure you can make steel or aluminium frame to look like titanium but it's like treating fake designer cloth or furniture or putting M decal on regular BMW, as if you rolled with the real toughs. You really need to be injected with "Caaaarbon, so light, so expensive, so much performance" ideology to go over the plastic feeling it gives. ENVE rims and bars - so much money and matte plastic finish. Not everyone is into looks and touch, but it's like owning a Corvette and laughing at Aston Martin or Maserati.
  • 3 2
@makripper Exactly, they are all options, thanks for confirming my original point!!!
  • 2 1
interesting. The OP didn't say that all materials have their +/- points. mgolder, you seem to be confused.
and quite tetchy...
  • 2 0
@matt76 sorry about the last comment, i must have read it wrong. I didn't realize that was what you were trying to get at. Cheers!
  • 3 0
No worries. Ultimately no matter what materiel, wheel size or type of bike people ride as long as they are thoroughly enjoyings themselves riding their bikes that's all really matters.
  • 2 0
I assure anyone that enves are not indestructable. I live in ogden utah and have recently found out by experiance that they hire their production workers through a staffing agency which USUALLY hires recovering druggies and crack heads. None with any technical experience and pay barely above utah minimum wage. So i wouldnt expect a great deal from a company that puts selling volume over quality and who dont adequately compensate their employees.
  • 2 0
If that's true then good luck to those who spend 2k on them. They're going to need it!
  • 4 0
Price aside - ENVE's look legit in person, so do DT Swiss, Light Bicycle, Eastons and Spesh Rovals. But don't put your money on any dodgy, no-name stuff, like what you can buy from Ali-Express or Ace. Yes, those things can cost almost half of the price of Light-Bicycle. Holy crap, you put that thing on your bike clamped in the bike stand, you spin the wheel and the whole thing wants to fly off, due to eccentric force generated by horribly uneven layup. Overpaying is a very relative term, you can overpay by buying ENVEs but so can you with those I mentioned... those crappy shops offer some carbon components like seat posts or handlebars at prices lower than Truvativ Hussefelt (20$, fk me!), and sorry that falls under category of being a low life wanting carbon, just get a sticker and put it all over your post, will do you better.
  • 1 0
Because NONE of you ride anywhere near as fast as ANY of these pros... Meaning the carbon products that are marketed towards YOU, aren't necessarily appropriate for pro riders on this particular course. Not that hard to figure out..
  • 1 0
@MasterSlater it's not like going fast would mean being harder on rims though. I mean, it's not unrelated, but they also ride much smoother to accomplish that speed, and from my own experience, getting back up to speed I rode before my injury, I destroy much, much less material thanks to improving my skills while riding about as fast as I did before. AND I dropped my tire pressure significantly since then. Of course there's tracks where the bike does get proper punishment, but a skilled rider will still quite likely hurt the bike less than a less skilled one, even if the latter goes slower.
  • 2 0
Masterslater - we need more people like you, thank you for bringing that up, sometimes we zoom in too much, making us forget the whole picture. We are so unworthy - shame shame shame. I always thought people buying carbon are clueless and immoral, and here I am being one of them. What have I become and for what... all carbon and no skills... shame shame shame
  • 1 0
@matt76 I never said Titanium was a saviour, I said it was hyped and pushed as such back in the day, just as carbon is now. Just like alloys/aluminium etc were as well over steel. It is the same process.

Also, calling me a sheep. Get over yourself, I have some carbon handlebars, that is all. Oh how foolish I feel for following everyone with my full carbon everything that you somehow imagined based off one comment of mine. How very presumptuous.

All I did was be reasonable about carbon and how it IS an alternative. If it was not an alternative, like you seem to think, why is anyone able to buy a bike made of steel, titanium, aluminium or even wood for crying out loud. Choices, you do have them, and nobody is forcing you to buy carbon anything either.
  • 1 0

Haha, so true. Although I think this is true with all things. Ask a 5yr old boy what he thinks of girls and he will likely say they have cooties and should be avoided at all costs. Ask a 15 yr old and he will say they are the best thing ever and should be got as close to as possible at all costs. Ask a 40 yr old and you will get answers ranging from cooties to delicious and everything in between.
  • 2 0
Carbon is destroyed by the price and the fact they are concentrating to much on weight i think. screw the weight and make it powerful instead. I work with a boatbuilder sometimes and heard a lot of carbon talk in their branch, and everybody talk of how indestructible it is in boatbuilding bla bla bla.

Mud doesn't stick to foam very well, that's why they use it nickkk, if it was a regular old plastic ( or carbon, considering...) it would pack up and stick if it was anything but a deluge on race day.

Where the big dollars are spent is not even on this gear, it is the practice time these people have.
