Despite a couple really scary falls (just wait till you see that dude from SLC who ejected over the front end and down a double stager cliff), everyone was so on point and slaying. Andreu was ripping that top section like a dh trail in his back yard.
Personally I think mcgarrys run was better than straits...
And I challenge anyone to not "hold it together" after back flipping the sender like Zink. Total commitment- stick it or be a paraplegic.
Not stoking the crowd, not providing stats, rider bio/data, music...big guy needed a wingman!
I would've had it Kelly->Andreu->Kyle or Cam. But that's the way it goes with judged events. I'm glad Kelly got the People's Choice award.
Lesson: maybe it's good to keep a few secrets and surprise the crowd/judges.
Props to them (and all the other riders) for stepping up and pushing the limits.
tough to decide between lacondeguy and mcgarry tho impressive from the kiwi too
his run was so clean, fast & full of trick
I really feel for those guys who missed out on their second run.
The level was so high this year and I think there was more to come.
There were a few people "got robbed", but at least not by the judges this year.
All I know is that was one of the rowdiest throw-downs any of us has ever witnessed. Debate THAT.
1 McGarry
2 Cam Zink
3 Andreu Lacondeguy
4 Graham Assasiz
5 Kyle Strait
Straight? he recycled a trick from 2004 on the sender. In my mind, no contest.
He didn't need to do much, either. Another jump/drop or two with a hint of style would have managed.
As Dexta said.....
I was so stressed as Zink dropped in. I didn't want to see him be seriously injured or worse in front of his pregnant wife... but he and Strait nailed it. Would have loved to see them them take 1-2.
Anyway, thank you to all of the riders. You put it all on the line for our entertainment. Who cares about rankings!? You guys are legends!
But yes, if there is a compromise to be made maybe they should put a reward for best trick
No one even attempted the Big Girl drop except for Doerfling (ejected to avoid a case), then Strait (case that he barely rode away from), then Zink (still cased, but cleanest in practice). Then Strait and Zink come through, hit it for the SECOND time in their contest runs, and both of them throw huge tricks. In practice and leading up to the event, there were multiple riders saying the Big Girl line was too scary, and that they'd hit something else. I think it was Hunziker that said that drop scared him too much so he'd build a line into the Canyon Gap instead. The intensity of tricking that big of a drop, with such high consequence, after it's barely even been tested cannot be overstated.
Before Big Girl Kyle's run was SO clean and tech. Go watch it again, and look at how steep and burly that is, and how perfectly you have to skip across that crazy traverse line. Kyle made it look simple, and got rewarded. His run was fast, flowy, and BIG, including perfectly clearing a gap at the end that I think only two other riders even hit (granted, Doerfling f*cking backflipped it, which was super burly).
And yeah, Kelly's flip was outrageous and awesome, and TMacs line was my favorite of the whole day.
Pierre: well deserved high-scoring run. Rode a pretty burly line and made it look easy, added tons of style, and two big tricks. I think the only thing keeping him from being higher up was that his line wasn't quite as burly as some.
The closest thing I think we saw to robbery was maybe Fairclough should've been a bit higher... But like with TMac, he had a super crazy run with some creative, largely untested moves, and the first run felt a bit more like he was feeling it out than he was really stomping stuff. I think he and TMac took one and two for creativity, though. I also think TMac's second run should've scored higher, but no point in arguing about second runs, unfortunately.
Would've loved to see Agassiz and Semenuk pull together full runs, but it just wasn't going to happen. I think if either of them had, we might be having a very different discussion today.
Overall, fantastic Rampage. Healing vibes to those hurt (Chubey you animal, Logan that was SO close…) I think there's a strong case to be made for keeping it at that venue for one more year. Thoughts?
McGarry in first
Zink in second
Lacondeguy in third
1st Kelly McGarry (the canyon gap flip was massive and linked up with lots of other tricks)
2nd Andreu Lacondeguy (His run had plenty of DH speed and exposure and a solid link up of tricks)
3rd Cam Zink (that was the biggest backflip ever but then he played it safe expecting to be able to get a second run where he would link up the rest of his tricks but never got the chance)
4th Kyle Strait (plenty of technical line choice but only one big trip with the suicide no hander)
5th Tyler McCaul (also tech line choice and good speed with a good link up of tricks)
Zink: biggest backflip ever. History made. He called it out and landed it SO perfectly. A 3rd well-deserved, in my opinion, but it's not a best trick. He knew he needed more in run 2.
Lacondeguy: There's a reason he and Vink were able to ride their top line so fast and flowy: because they're total badasses. But also, because it just wasn't as steep, exposed, and burly as some of the other lines out there. That said, it's still incredibly steep, exposed, and burly, but compared to some of the other lines up top, it was a bit lacking. Granted, he threw a backflip (over a relatively safe jump compared to Gully's or TMac's backflips), hit the old Sender (that many have hit) and rode a pretty standard line below, albeit with another massive backflip and a sweet one hand super seater. Basically, the best merits of Andreu's runs were the tricks and the speed (possible b.c of a less burly line), so all those people not wanting Rampage to become a slopestyle? Stop saying that Andreu got robbed.
Zink won best trick, btw.
Kelly Mcgarry first, for me !!
Kyle Norbraten (among many others) didn't get a chance for a second run.
This was a decision taken by people other than himself, without prior consultation. That opportunity was, you might say, «taken away from him».
Therefore, « Norbs STILL got robbed»
PS: Zink crushed it.
Love cam Zink for life!!
Holy shit, i wanna see the second run... why not today?
1. Cam Zink
2. Kyle Strait
3. Andreu Lacondeguy
4. Kelly McGarry
