Parksville B.C. - Stomping sweet lines all day, 24-year-old Ben Boyko recently smoked a solid contingent of dirt-jump heavy hitters at the Blackboxlabs.net I-scream Invitational Contest at Jordie Lunn's compound.

Fresh on the mountain bike scene, the Team Cove rider's BMX background factored in huge at the Island event - with technical dirt features constrained within a tight, flowing course.

"It's great. There's all sorts of different lines you can take there," Boyko

Huck Wagon supports the trails that they shuttle Huck Wagon supports the trails that they shuttle
For the past 3 years, the Huck Wagon has been a popular feature of the North Shore bike scene. Originally founded by Tim Petrescue, the shuttle was not a new idea at all. Every now and then we run into someone who tells us how he and his buddies “thought of starting a shuttle service many years ago” Tim had the guts to take out a sizable loan, put a daring paint job on the jet black body and see where this adventure would take him. In 2004 Tim partnered up with Martin Schoenberg from ESC Bike Camps and the second Huck Wagon was brought to life.

Cycles Appalache: Exquisite speed metal Cycles Appalache: Exquisite speed metal
Jerome Roy is proud to present his new project: Cycles Appalache. The first chassis to come out of the small Montreal shop is called Réal, and is the fruit of extensive engineering experience in DH racing and freeriding. It is certainly a familiar sight for most, but the connoisseur’s eye will notice a long list of improvements. Roy has been making this design evolve on a yearly basis since 1999. Now in a seventh generation, the 06 frame is incredibly light, sheding over 2 pounds over the last evolution launched in 04. It tips the scale at 9.5 pounds with a ti spring rear shock.

Started at the beginning of last riding season by Troy and Rob (owner and manager of the shop), it gathered almost 100 members and had anywhere from 20-70 people out for each and every ride. Of the 100 members, approximately 20 of them were ride leaders, and the majority of the rest were kids aged 9-15. They ride an area with 21 trails and can tailor groups to any and all riding abilities. 72 rides later they hosted a year-end wrap up with special guests Ryan Leech and Jay Hoots. Free burgers, hot dogs, and pop rounded out a great year for the kids and their family and Ryan put on a fantastic trials demonstration to keep them entertained even through a torrential downpour.

I didn’t make the team, coach. This race attracted hundreds of racers from all over Europe and around the world. In the mens’ category there were 208 riders in the semi finals. Only the top 80 get to advance into the finals. So knowing that in order to make the cut, I need to beat at least 128 of these rocketeers just to advance, this left no margin for error and no holding back. In my qualifying run I washed out in a loose burn and went down. I pedaled my ass off, but I was 11 second behind the cut off. I guess I will have to look at this race as a learning experience.

Specialized SX Trail 2 frame preview by Kuhner Specialized SX Trail 2 frame preview by Kuhner
Some seven years ago, as I sat picking shale bits out of my shoulder on Dead Dog on Mount 7 in Golden, BC, I realized I had a decision to make. The broken bike next to me had lasted a decade’s cross-country riding, and was relegated to a heap of twisted bits in a matter of insanely steep seconds. I craved a faster, bolder two-wheel experience and, as need dictates, so opened the wallet – double crown forks, fat tires and baggy shorts here I come.

I found myself living in Kamloops, BC, several years after that fateful day, where riding is all about fast flow and amplitude. It was here I quickly learned that the smoothest line is the one where your tires are on the ground as little as possible, and style, rather than sheer speed, was the method.

We've been busy at the Iguana Ranch this winter. To show our progress, we've uploaded a bunch of new images to the photo section here at Pinkbike. Check out the progress of the revamped dirt jumps and some new & under-construction lines…the air is really high up here—amazing what a little backhoe can do! Search “iguana ranch” in the trail section of the photo search.

If you’re planning a trip to the Island this season you may want to drop in and check out one of our events!

Cooperation Yields a Mountain of Garbage Cooperation Yields a Mountain of Garbage
Vedder Mountain Trails Association members representing Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association, Back Country Horseman of BC, Vedder Running Club, Pacific Northwest Motorcycle Associatian, and Chilliwack Outdoor Club cooperated to make the April 9 cleanup day organized by FVMBA reps a complete success. Individuals from these groups lent more than 700 man-hours of volunteer labour to the effort. This mammoth effort yeilded 2.7 metric tonnes of garbage that did not include metal, tires and other recyclables.
