[UPDATED] Elite Final Results & Overall Standings from the Bielsko-Biala DH World Cup 2024

May 19, 2024
by Ed Spratt
The second Elite DH World Cup of the year provided some close racing with nail-biting moments on a fresh new course in Poland.

After pulling ahead in the final two splits, Marine Cabirou secured her first win of the season in the elite women's race. Cabirou bested Camille Balanche through the final sectors as she crossed the line 1.188 seconds ahead with Nina Hoffmann completing the top three 1.6 back. Vali Höll crashed out in the first sector ending any hopes of back-to-back World Cup wins.

The elite men's race saw a first-time World Cup winner as Ronan Dunne backed up his Hardline Tasmania win early this year with victory in Poland. Dunne ended his weekend on the top step of the podium ahead of Loic Bruni by just 0.064 seconds. Bruni led a stacked French top five with Dunne the only rider not from France on the podium.

Does anyone want to actually discuss the racing? Yeah, the coverage, the new owners, the commentating and shit suck. But in getting really tired of it all. PB comments aren’t going to change a thing.
  • 38 6
I hear you, but being honest, the lack of accessibility to the coverage really is putting a damper on things, frustrating as hell today after finding what I initially thought was the channel that was showing it
  • 39 4
I've given up trying to watch it since it has changed from Red Bull. I used to watch most races albeit delayed.
  • 28 9
Yup great racing and great coverage, used to love reading the comments along with watching the race. All i see is whingeing now
  • 57 15
I have zero issues watching it, easy to find and doesn’t cost me anything extra since I had Max and live in the US. The coverage isn’t the worst and isn’t the best. It still beats some of the Freecaster days. The people saying they just gave up watching or don’t watch due to the change weren’t following racing like they implied anyways.

Anyways bummed for Dak I thought this was the one!
  • 20 9
@dkcove: seems pretty f*cking accessible to me. VPN, Tiz and chill. If you can't figure that out I'm really sorry for you

@Broso: Your talking nonsense, I've been watching DH since the first grundig on Eurosport. Since it went behind a pay wall I haven't seen a single race as I'm not prepared to pay for something that has always been free.
  • 34 3
@BedsideCabinet: your choice is the source of your unhappiness
  • 8 1
@BedsideCabinet: I want quality content, and I want it to cost $1.00. No wait. I want it free. I’m cheap, so I watched it at a friend’s. Even better. The video quality is amazing. The closeups of the tires on the dirt were amazing.

Its a joke trying to access. I paid for a discoveryplus subscription. First i was watching the semi final by mistake then I found the race feed and the feed had no commentating , none at all. Its so messy .The person in charge of licencing and broadcasting thr race doesnt give a fuck. What a shit show.
  • 3 0
@RHSGuy: the problem I had was the women's was on Eurosport UK, then it dropped from that channel for the men's, I could watch mens on other language Eurosport channels, but wasn't available in English ( or French for that matter)
  • 1 0
@dkcove: it was shown on a French TV channel, l’Equipe TV, with French commentaries, understandably.
  • 4 0
The live racing and replay is all being shown on HBOMax if you have that, or if you have ATT cellular you may have access to it. I just noticed that all of this is available there. I thought the coverage was actually pretty good. The racing was great. That was a tough track and runs that looked fast were losing seconds somehow.
  • 2 0
@mkul7r4: Tiz already has all the finals up now elites juniors, men's and womens
  • 13 0
I don't give a f... about the coverage. Was there in person, unreal!!! Big Grin
If we'll have the World Cup here again, next year, yall have to come: D
  • 4 0
Where did Finn lose all that time! Frown
  • 12 0
@Broso: Same here. Watching it all on Max, was pretty easy. I thought the coverage was pretty damn good. Cool shots, and almost full runs of the top riders. Commentating was decent imo as well, Gwin + Minnar combo is cool af. Bummed for Dak as well.
  • 7 2
Brilliant racing. Loris on the podium..... . Top lad
  • 6 5
@amaranth: Right! I was going to have a witty comeback for the guy who said I was talking nonsense but he’s reminiscing about “Bundig” in the 90’s…it’s a waste of time. The pre-show and coverage was pretty damn good. Track walks, GoPro previews, and analysis. The rider spotlights and story line is a cool addition also.

I’ll enjoy the growth while the others complain on the internet.
  • 6 4
@Broso: sadly people just love to bitch, apart from rob on it the red bull coverage wasn’t that great anyways! If you have EE network on your phone from Britain you get it for free too!
  • 17 1
Complaining about complaining is still complaining Wink

Actually I thought the coverage was pretty good today. The drone shot section was well chosen to take advantage of what a drone can do, and the slo-mos into the top berms (where Loris almost bit it) were awesome.
  • 12 1
@nilswalk: I thought the coverage was great. Lots of cameras, the right replays (Red Bull always showed the wrong replay and not what Rob was talking about), the drone was actually good quality, good and accurate graphics. The videos they put out through this weekend were really well done too, vital raw level trackside vids. GoPro is also putting up POVs from tons of riders in qualifying, semis and finals. Ronans winning run is actually up right now to watch POV. I think they have started this year off really well. That said, there are a couple personalities/commentators I couldn’t without.
  • 7 1
You're in the US -- why not just get the Max app dude? It's cheap and you get hbo and more with it. No brainier.
  • 1 3
Perfect... I have posted something similar on another article Tired of all complains. Pay the subscription for the riders and teams! Support them.
  • 3 0
@Legohead: I have no idea why, but there are two tiles on Discovery+ for the same racing - one has commentary and the other doesn't. Caught me out for a while last time out too.

I think the footage is good. The commentary doesn't suck and I actually quite like what they have to say, but it lacks a little excitement
  • 2 0
@Anto1: L'Equipe who put adverts on instead of riders' runs...
  • 1 0
@Legohead: it seems that as soon as the race starts the commentary is off. If you go to subtitles/audio you can choose from ambient or english commentary. It does seem a bit weird to default to no commentary even though I have been watching the pre show with sound!! But I do think things are slowly improving with the coverage, the reporters and the commentary
  • 1 0
@CantQuitCartel: sorry my mistake I pay £5 a month for it!
  • 1 0
@CantQuitCartel: you get the whole package though and you can watch it on your tv as well!
  • 1 0
@RHSGuy: The source of my unhappiness in this instance was someone who doesn't know me making comments on my level of interest in Downhill racing. That was not my choice.
  • 1 0
@beingsisyphus: Well I'll just have to take your word on that won't I. Can't believe I missed close ups of tyres in dirt.
  • 6 0
The coverage is great, they really figured out now where and when to cut between drone and camera and where to place them, the commentary, with Gwin as the expert, is imho way better than it used to be with Warner, and the racing is so tight with that many riders both in the women’s and men’s who have really upped their game, incredible.
Yeah, I would prefer if it was for free, but for what it costs, at least here in Europe, that is money really well spent for me.
  • 2 0
@Broso: I hear you, and most people just complain. But, just a reminder that not everyone have Max and/or live in America. I don't have more room in my streaming budget, I will not pay another service. And I tried watching pirate streams, but I don't want to deal with all the ads, viruses and etc that comes with it. I love WC and rarely missed a race since freecaster. I don't mind paying (I was a very early adopter of GCN+, and that had tons of value to me. Everything cycling related, giro, tour, wonders, documentaries, etc. Money well spent). However I don't think it is worth anymore to pay the whole shebang only to watch a few races and disregard everything else.

It looks like Val stopped to have a cup of tea on her race run.

  • 43 2
First of all hon Ronan, f*ckin epic
Managed to get to see it on an unofficial stream
Gwins commentary is brilliant from a technical/race knowledge point of view
Minaars wasn't bad for first time
Both of them aren't exactly exciting but their insight and knowledge makes up for it.
But FFS would yer man Rick please stop interrupting them shouting about heart rate, split times and other stuff that's on the screen for everyone to see
The commentary needs someone to work with the likes of Gwinns style of commentary to raise it up a level and yer man Rick unfortunately doesn't seem to be the right person.
Commentary will be a shit show when Gwins eventually gets back to racing
The wee rider/bike section before they drop in is a good idea but could be improved by including some tech details, tyre, suspension, brake details etc.
  • 2 2
Yes exactly, we have the insight and analysis, but the excitement is low.

Imo there are too many anecdotes from years past that aren't related to the rider on screen. Some are good/helpful, too many and it just feels like we're hearing tales from the good old days instead of what the rider on screen is doing.

Warner is great at commentating the whole way down the track, and he always knows the stakes at any given moment. They need someone who can do that...
  • 11 1
Nail on the head. The "Irish when it suits him" rick McLaughlin has to go. He is not just useless but he's distracting. Nothing genuine about the guy.

On the other hand unreal result for Dunne. Savage goin!
  • 6 1
I know this will sound unbelievable, but Gracia was actually decent enough on the french stream. He spots stuff and had the right level of energy, a far cry from his English commentary last year.
  • 3 2
@Mugen: I might consider brushing up my third-year French and giving it a go at this stage.
  • 5 1
I'm not slating Greg, he said some interesting stuff, but his low energy took the coverage in exactly the wrong direction.
Tahnee was waaaaay better last time.
I know Warner is tied to RB, but why can't we have Tracey Hannah back at least? She would bring some much-needed life to the proceedings.
  • 6 0
Mentioning the heart rate is probably part of the contract with Whoop. No one cares but they wanted the Whoop money and now everyone is stuck with it.

  • 4 0
@dkcove: on the other hand if you managed to learn french spanish should be fairly easy to pick up next. Grammar is pretty much the same, you have much less different vocal sounds and you know more reliably how to pronounce words than french as it pretty much pronounces like it is written.

@rtg9891: Still done impressively well. Those dominant French riders are a good bit older than he is. Heck, there aren't many young French riders up there in the list. Could we be seeing a shift again just like we had two decades ago where the French (male) racers lost their dominance and other countries took over. Primarily the Brits and the Aussies back then, maybe the Irish are onto something as well now.
  • 2 0
@vinay: irish and nz and us and brit and canadian and...
  • 5 0
@fautquecaswing: The era I'm referring to in the mens field it was primarily the Brits and the Aussies. The US, Aotearoans and Canadians came a good bit later. At least that's what passed through my memory-filter, which could very well wrong indeed. In the womens field it was very different, also because of the lack of financial support for non-European female athletes. Tracey Hannah did really well but left the series with a third place overall and a huge debt. Vanessa Quin took the Worlds though I'm not sure whether she ever also won a WC round. So the French were still strong there, with ACC and later Sabrina Jonnier picking up lots of wins.
  • 11 2
I watched on Discovery+ here in the UK and the coverage now for the first 2 world cups has been a lot better than Red Bull ever was and even better than this time last year. I suppose its just down to if you want to pay to view or not, if you like DH racing so much and its your main sport, then its a no brainer to pay for it like people do with any elite level sport. I do miss Warner though, he was great and cannot be replaced.
  • 3 0
Yup agree, last round I didn't get the right stream and I still find it weird that they do one version with "ambient sound", on the other hand the Redbull site was always sh*t and it was always easier finding the steam via Google/bike site links. Cameras are excellent though they could use a liiiittle more contrast/color in some places, in the end this natural look is better than something weird. Commentary is getting better by the week, yes it lacks a bit energy and the timing isn't as great as Warner's who was excellent, he always knew when to hype and when to say some insights. Now it's a bit unbalanced. Still I think as a whole watching experience it's not much behind Redbull if even so, it never lags, it doesn't shut down when switching from live to re-watch, I'm okay paying the 6€/month discovery for this.
  • 13 0
 Bravo Camille!

 Wow, stacked commentator booth ...
  • 8 2
How is anyone from the UK/Ireland watching this? Watched the women's race on Eurosport 2, the men's race was next up on the TV listings and then it disappeared. Now It's showing some British moto race instead? So it's either I illegally stream it or watch it in a different language. What a crock of shit
  • 1 0
It's on German,Spanish and Portuguese Eurosport 2 if you can access them, can't find an English commentary though
  • 4 0

 Discovery+ website.
  • 13 0
@dkcove: watching it on french Eurosport, Cedric Gracia is a much better commentator when you can't understand what he's saying
  • 2 0
Was supposed to be watching it on Discovery Plus but apparently they like to charge us for the privilege of then not showing the broadcast. Womens race went fine, and then we got .... Superbike racing from Donington.
  • 1 0
I canceled Eurosport during the last race when it didn't show the Fort Williams race. I switched to Discovery + and now I can see all the races
  • 1 0
It's a right mission. Juniors on Youtube, Female Elites on Eurosport 2 and then Male Elites on Eurosport 2 but in Spanish!! I wonder if they would appeal to a wider audience if the Elites were solely on Eurosport 1 or 2 instead of being stuck behind a paywall.
  • 2 0
Get a dodgy box/fire stick...I thought I'd get to see it on Eurosport but no joy, I watched it through Stan, and Ozzy channel, probably pay per view in Oz
  • 2 0
Discovery plus, sack off Eurosport and use the discovery plus website or app. For me, it work no different to how the Red Bull site did. In fact as soon as I clicked on the cycling link it was there as the main billing huge across the page , good to go.
  • 1 0
@mtbcyclist: was that Eurosport 2? I tried the French one but boxing was on

@Garry17: have a dodgey box myself but raging I didn't think of that, will remember it for next time, nice one
  • 1 0
@dkcove: it was yeah, i do remember some alternate french Eurosport channel showing boxing though
  • 10 0
This is late know but may help. For the next one.

Assuming that you are watching via a smart tv;
1) download the discovery plus app.
2) go to schedule
3) find the event selection box that covers all the categories and click on it.
4) sit back and watch the entire race.
5)pop back onto PB after the race to moan about anything such as the coverage, weather, track, pay, the choice of champagne on the podium, COMMENTATORS (hot topic that one).... The list is endless.
6) ride your own bike as soon as possible and remind yourself how fast these racers are and how much you love the racing.
7) do more prep before leogang to ensure you know where to find the full race event on you media.
Cool go ride some more, with your mates but faster this time and have a beer afterwards.

@scottlakesmtb: It dropped off the tv app listings schedule. Not even a search for keywords would bring the mens race up. Womens elite race was fine, elite mens race was "up next" and then it wasn't and all you could watch was either the Gira Italia or motorbike racing live from Donnington race circuit for 4 hours.

For a paid subscription that was supposed to bring us improved quality of service, Discovery+ has done an absolutely shite job of it this weekend.
  • 2 0
@Lemmingie: hmm. That's odd because I could see options for each category plus a full race event viewing, which I opted for. Shame you didn't get to see it all, hope you get to see the replays maybe?

The app is difficult to navigate and the search system isnt up there with Google but it magically worked for these past two rounds for me. I have probably jinxed the next round mind...
  • 1 0
@scottlakesmtb: I checked back later; the listing for the replay is now available but am none too impressed with the poor showing by Discovery+ and even less impressed with the absolute radio-silence from them when notified about the issue.
  • 1 0
@Lemmingie: unfortunately we are very small fish in their oceans. Seriously though, watch vergier on the podium....
  • 10 0
Fuck yea Ronan! Soo bummed for Lachie, the pace was there.
  • 11 0
 He‘s dunne it!!
  • 5 0
Did anyone else notice that they screwed up pretty much the biggest moment of the women's race? Just after Höll went down they had some flickering graphics and then went back up to the start gate! I guess there should have been a replay there.

I was watching via L'Equipe if it makes any difference.

Are you suggesting that the platform that provides the Earth with Amish Mafia, Naked and Afraid, and Man vs. Wild - is having issues with a live mountain bike broadcast? Shocking. Ok, I'm being hyperbolic but its fun to make fun of The Man. The Man still styles his hair with hairspray, so you can't expect him to even know what downhill is, much less show it live.
  • 27 20
Anyone else miss Warner? I feel it is just not the same and like watching paint dry
  • 20 1
Yeah Rick was good for EWS recaps but this is painful. Gwin is doing good imo, he is there to provide insights which he does
  • 5 3
@Johannes073: There is no banter whatsoever unlike “how does he sit down with balls that big”
  • 15 2
@Johannes073: I want to reach through the screen and strangle him every time he says a riders name after the first time in a run.
Dude, we know who it is. ShutThef*ckUp. If all you have to contribute is their damn name then WB can replace you with a graphic since it's so necessary to be reminded of who's on screen every 8.6 seconds.
  • 5 7
No-one can come close to Warner, it's just something you'll never be able to replicate. Rick is great, very knowledgeable he obviously just doesn't give off the same energy so comes across as boring.
  • 31 2
Have not heard Gwin interrupt Rick once, whereas Rick interrupts Gwin before he finishes his comment more than half of the time. Usually with some inane comment like "what's the next split (which is still 10 seconds away) going to tell us."
  • 14 1
 Gwin gives his insight.

Ric's constant "can be do enough to beat Bruni?" when the last split was 1.8 back and the rider is 50m from the finish line gets a bit tedious after a while.

Greg.... Well, I don't think he wanted to be there.
  • 3 0
@jay-me: Yeah, I kinda agree about Greg. Ric often had to pull a comment out of him. But unlike Gwin - who had planned on not racing the first few rounds, Greg was there because he didn't qualify.

On the women's side, I'm glad I'm pretty good at listening through accents because Isabella has a strong one. But her English is better than my non-existent French so that's my problem not hers. I could imagine her announcing more next year when she takes a break from racing (and more importantly - training) full time.
  • 5 2
@curtiscycles: warner was born meant for this... he put all his energy and soul... to the point he got truly depressed as he explained in that podcast after being put apart...
  • 2 0
@PauRexs: Yeah well unless he breaks his contract with RedBull and gets hired by Discovery he won't be covering the world cups again.

I genuinely think Theo Erlangsen would be good to inject some energy into that dry, dry booth. I think he would bounce quite well off of gwins thoughtful insight

Well done our local man, Greg Williamson, for a top 10 result. What a shame for Lachie, he was flying!!!!
  • 7 0
There aren't a lot of runs that break my heart for the rider, but Lach's fall did. Dude has shown he's top level though, so he at least got up up, got points and got lots of peoples attention.
  • 8 0
 Go on Ronan!!
  • 4 0
Watching elites replay on eurosport and they cant even be bothered to stop the footage for the adverts so you end up missing runs such as Stephens- mcnabs. Useless bunch of fuckwits.
  • 2 0
Stupid question maybe, but how to interpret the split times? E.g., +0.54 (2) would mean that the rider is 0.54 of a second slower than the fastest person overall (hot seat), or fastest r for that particular section? And the number in brackets is the current overall placement of the run? This seems obvious but then I don't get the 11 in the women's field, which has only 10 riders.
Lastly, if the split is based on current overall #1, that should mean that the sum of all split times shows the difference to the rider in the hot seat, right?
  • 1 2
You should consider the rider's overrall time compared to the leader and not just the section.
  • 1 3
I think it's who has the fastest split time, that specific split.
  • 1 0
 Yes, to the last question
  • 2 0
They only did the fastest of a split when there use to be “key sections” and they had a separate time for that section. Otherwise it’s always how far behind they are on the leader.
  • 5 0
Pierron back on pace! The man is kamikaze, he is on the "full racing mode" it is just amazing to watch!
  • 2 0
 *when he is..
  • 4 0
He is in my Fantasy team so I’m well happy, really cheap pick too. I expect his price to go up after today.

Just a recap on where to watch:
( use Brave Browser) and link to dodgy website
tiz-cycling-live.io/livestream.php

Eurosport 2 UK had womens Elite, but did not then show mens on UK or French Eurosport.

Mens continued on the following Eurosport 2 channels in their respective languages:
Germany
Italy
Spain
Portugal

Can people please start compiling a list of channels where they watched it,and the language it was broadcast in and I will put together a full list later in comments here.

UCI & Discovery "Bringing Downhill ... To the World !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

Greg and Aaron in the booth now. Stacked.
  • 2 0
I love the pro commentary. They've done this in Dota 2 (video game) too and it was always incredible to have the pro insights.
  • 2 0
Waaaaaay better than Cedric squealing like a puppy on every run about "HE'S FASSSSSTTTT!" I read that Cedric now does the French broadcast.

Fine tuning request for Greg (and Minaar): cut back a tad on unrelated chit-chat that rambles over fire-moments in runs that don't win. All the pros are all still beyond world class, even the 31-60 semi cut, but there are some some banger moves that getting excluded from commentary because A & G (and Ric) are commenting about someone else's run during a different rider's run. Still, Aaron & today Greg (and for the women, Nicole) add top shelf insights & ideas that Ric (and Ced-Ric) can't bring. And since this is basically free on Max / hbo, I'm good. For the moment...

I pay to watch through Discovery + and it worked fine for juniors, but now it just says something went wrong when I try and Airplay to the tv. I can watch on the phone but f*ck it, this is shit.
Watched BMX world champs last night for a test and that worked fine.

I’d just like to say a big thanks to the legends on this page that shared the links to watch.

Dean Lucas and Josh Frotha live commentary is pure GOLD!
  • 6 4
Dak needs a life coach or something. Just has so much trouble at the most important times. He's his own worst enemy but could be a multi world cup winner this year.

Such bullshit. I subscribed to discovery+ but can’t find the stream in the app. Meanwhile, it won’t take my password when logging in from the web. It’s autofill for both and it works on the app but not the web. Get your shit together discovery.
  • 7 1
 It’s on Max dude.
  • 6 1
@pisgahgnar: This level of confusion is definitely not helping.
  • 4 1
@jayacheess: it has been announced multiple times, the World Series social media accounts have published a list of where to watch by country every race, including earlier this week. It’s annoying to have to pay, but if you have not figured out where it’s supposed to be that’s on you.
  • 2 1
Works fine on cellphone and on PC here. Maybe get your shit together?
  • 1 1
@pisgahgnar: Agree. Yes, the different platforms globally (and their different pricing) are a bit of a shit show. But people still at this point not knowing where to watch it in their location can't just keep shouting at UCI/ WBD. (Same goes for those subscribing to the right service, but not bothering to find out how to access the different content there going mad when DH isn't offered to them on a plate.) Coming from someone who's country/ viewing platform isn't listed in those social media posts and who'll need to switch services next week when Max launches here.
  • 12 1
@pisgahgnar: You can blame the consumer all you want, but if they're having trouble finding the content they want, it means finding it wasn't as intuitive as it should be. When you've got a race series broadcast being handled by Discovery, and discovery has a streaming service, and you go there and don't find it, that's confusing as a consumer. Having to scroll through social media posts to find out which disconnected media provider might have it isn't intuitive.

I know where to find it in Canada because I read pinkbike regularly. But some average Joe who just saw a clip on youtube and thinks he might want to watch a live race? Is he going to know that he has go to 'FloBike' (whatever the f*ck that is) and pay $30 USD per month for that service (yes, there are no prices in Canadian dollars) on a website that appears to be dedicated to road cycling?

This shit is silly. Stop defending it.

Presumably it improved throughout the broadcast because it was all over the place during the first women's elite run.
