Must Watch: Amaury Pierron Fully Pinned on a Trail Bike in 'Reunion Island'

Jan 21, 2019
by COMMENCAL BIKES & SKIS

Words by Commencal
Shot & Edited by Leon Perrin
Sound Design by Meruem

After a busy race season we decided to go to Reunion Island for 2 weeks. Beaches, swimming pools, tropical fruit, lazing in the sun. Holidays!

But hey, a holiday without a bike isn't really a holiday… So Amaury took his META AM 29, convinced that he would ride quietly amongst the palms and coconut trees. Only here, if you chase nature it comes back to bite you! Because Reunion also has volcanoes and mountains, it offers enduro, DH and single tracks that are just superb!

The result? Have a watch and enjoy!

That guy looks fast. He should try racing downhill.

That guy looks fast, he should try racing endurbro...
  • 33 15
Haha! Don't poke the bear... Serves me right I guess.

All top 80 wc downhillers can ride like that.
  • 7 3
he should try some true enduro too. It´s true DH too.
  • 12 0
Who knows, he might win a couple of World Cups.
  • 8 0
@tacklingdummy: Yeah right, tell him he's dreamin'
  • 8 2
Except for the slow-motion shots. He looks pretty slow in them.
  • 2 0
Yeah, it's a strange contrast. More so with this edit, because of the sheer pace he carries everywhere, in the normal shots.
  • 130 0
very similar to my warm up run
  • 59 0
That slowmo through the trees. Bike and rider utterly composed together like they were one. Great bit of film that......
  • 132 1
Even slow-mo he's faster than me
  • 2 1
Thay was some riding huh, sure looked like he had it all in hand didn't he?
  • 52 0
Is this the voting page for photo of the year? So many excellent shots!
  • 4 1
The one with the light coming behind his silouette in the middle of the lush forest is sublime.
  • 4 0
someone give the man an award now! unreal photography.
  • 2 0
That one of him shirtless is a definite contender
  • 53 5
From a relatively nobody to MTB Superstar in less than a year... Crazy how fast things go
  • 36 0
Winning a couple World Cups will do that. This could be another interesting year for some "nobody" riders. Can't wait!
  • 4 1
It's hard to fathom how close in skill the top like 50 guys actually are. Would make for some even more exciting racing if the top 15 or so weren't also so damn consistent. Hopefully Pierron can stitch a few seasons together and remain in the elite of the elite.
  • 16 0
Tough to become a superstar in a sport with one series made up of six races with one run at each track
  • 14 1
Relative nobody? He had podiums in years before, a rider to watch for years.
  • 35 0
 That should sell some bikes.
  • 2 0
Oh definitely. I miss my old Meta SX and now I suddenly feel like I'm missing out on the new Meta as well. And the Furious. And the Supreme. I love me some Commencal.
  • 40 0
Little more interesting than Christopher walken.
  • 9 0
@matttauszik: ya that was some dumb Hollywood sh*t. Give me a top rider crushing it any day over that
  • 31 0
@matttauszik: Looks like you prefer riden than walken
  • 28 0
Yeh obviously sped up a lot, there's no way anyone can ride that much faster than me, I've even got a Strava Kom after all
  • 16 0
Pro Tip for the aspiring KOM Holders - if you make your own private run down your driveway it still counts as a KOM, be sure to mention it at your LBS for factory sponsorship.
  • 6 1
@Clarkeh: should I also mention that I’m influencer?
  • 1 0
@Clarkeh: you can also mess with the app on your phone somehow by turning it off and on or disconnecting the battery or something. I did it once by accident somehow. I have no idea what I did but I went a mile or so in like 3 seconds. Most of the trails in my area are accomplished in under 15 seconds. Either they've figured it out or someone can pass through trees while riding on top of rockets.
  • 3 1
@Soilsledding: Absolutely, bring a friend to "randomly" bump into you and say he follows you on Instagram, and that it affects his purchasing decisions - he doesn't have to buy anything, you'll be getting it all for free soon with your new pro deal.
  • 2 0
@Warburrito: just gps/triangulation inaccuracy between phones in general, you can ride the exact same trail at the exact same time as someone else at the exact same speed and be 30 seconds faster or slower than the other guy on Strava.
  • 26 0
setting up for the corner mid air like huh?
  • 19 0
In a world of edits lasting a couple of hours before being forgotten, this one deserved to live on.
  • 14 0
Absolutely amazed with the style of this guy... it’s soooo much different than loic’s for example... it basically quite the opposite... Pierron really really low in the bike... Loic more straight and apparently controlled... but both FAST AS HELL..

Happy to read an article about the dh wc racer positions and why so much differences... hope and article released that way soon!!!
  • 4 0
Was gonna comment on the bike position as well, He seems very low on the bike and yet almost always on the center of the bike, never too forward or too aft. very unique and fascinating to watch on fast bits of the track. Blinky is my favorite to watch of all the real fast guys, Amaury is maybe one of the top five fun to watch fast guys.
  • 14 0
Commencal has been consistently putting out the best content. Keep em coming.
  • 7 0
Such a dope rig, I just wish I had trails gnarly enough around here to justify buying one
  • 9 1
The trail models come with a bit less travel but the same intentions as the longer travel models. Wouldn't have thought a bike with a Lyrik fork would actually be called a "Trail Bike". Either way, they have a shorter travel model that may work for you. Would have been interested to see how Commencal bikes would have compared to the other bikes in the recent Group Test. Maybe next year.

flag spankthewan FL (Jan 21, 2019 at 11:49) (Below Threshold)
@vinay: I don't know anyone who rides anything less thank a Lyrik or 36 on their trail rigs. Stiffness and peace of mind over weight savings any day. Modern trail bikes plow, and I'm not really sure who the target customer is for the Fox 36 or Pike.
  • 16 3
@spankthewan: Many people, including myself, ride Pike's on their trail bikes and get along just fine. In fact I'd say more people have Pike's than Lyric's on their trail bikes.
  • 10 7
It isn’t a trail bike if it has a lyrik or 36 on it...pretty simple bud.

Just because a burly AM build climbs well enough for most of us to justify it for the downs doesn’t make it a trail bike.

My buddy has a dream built short travel trail bike and that thing climbs like a monster compared to my nomad and can be plenty capable in the right hands. Good riders just adjust expectations and approach, but can still pin on a light short travel build

Bicycles. Pick one and ride it. Anywhere. Enjoy Smile
  • 4 0
 @loopie: Bingo!
  • 1 2
The pivot is way to low, video speed must be faked
  • 6 4
@nvranka: to anyone that rides downhill a trail bike is anything with a single crown and less than 180mm travel
  • 2 1
@nvranka: Tell that to my 130mm bike with a 140mm Lyrik or 160mm Lyrik up front.
  • 2 1
@levizbrown: trying to be a cool guy DHer? Lmao

A trail bike is a trail bike.

I own a park and dh bike, and shuttle at least two days a week....guess your point is moot.
  • 5 1
For some silly reason I'd like to see him race that trail against Josh Bryceland (Bryceland on his Habit). We now mostly see Bryceland styling it up and having fun. But I love to see him pin it and it jives with how Pierron rides his bike here. Especially on the smaller bike on a trail like this.
  • 9 0
Tbh at this precise moment Amaury would smash Josh. I'd still prefer watching Josh do his thing down that trail.
  • 4 0
good riding, cool video and PODs everywhere ! nice job

what's the music ? sounds like a mix of the BJM and black mountain ? can't use shazam while watching
  • 8 0
The black angels Comanche moon There songs and been in a few big MTB and snowboard vids, so good!
  • 5 1
@jazzawil: Agree. This song is perfect for this video. One of the best bands of the last 15 years. Go see them if you haven't, you won't regret the $ and time spent.

Cheers
  • 3 0
Holy s*#t he is quick and super smooth, guess that's why he won the overall last year. Good season for Amaury picking up a Monster sponsor as well. Good luck for the upcoming season dude.
  • 5 0
Rad! Heading to Reunion in two weeks! Thanks for the inspiration.
  • 5 0
 That send @ 2:05 though...
  • 1 0
I didn't know they let world cup winning top billing riders send like that. Like I for real would have thought the red be a minder with him making sure he stays healthy for the season. It was even better for Boeing unexpected
  • 1 0
@freestyIAM: My jaw dropped already at the opening send. Smile
  • 5 1
Now THAT is how you sell a bike/brand/rider. Not drip feeding 4 new rider announcements over 4 days or whatever.
Respect.
  • 1 0
Some amazing photos after a awesome video. The other contenders will be watching this and worrying I feel. Young, Fast, smooth, precise, calculated and can go big. Looks like the French revolution is here to stay for a while.
  • 1 0
The title is "...on a Trail Bike".... the article say " Commencal Meta AM 29".....is that an error? I Think is the Commencal Meta TR 29....a trail bike with air shock (the meta AM has a coil shock)...im i wrong?
  • 1 0
Meta TR 29 is a trail bike 150-130 front and rear and Meta AM 29 is called trail bike in USA and CANADA but for Italy is considered ENDURO with 170-160 and META AM comes with coil shock or air shock, depends the price of the bike.
  • 3 0
That first bit was ridiculous, just had Warner in my head shouting "just look at how faaast he's going"
  • 4 4
You call that ridding a bike ,please he is not ridding a carbon frame ,and most important his brakes levers aren’t at 90 degrees, so no he is not fast enough, it is a camera thing, and maybe some scenes are made by a stuntman,I would like to see him riding DH with the real pros next year ,that would be a laugh. But hey keep on practice raise that brake levers and you will be faster I tell you ,and please drop that GEE attitude (muscle showing),good luck for you ,ALLEZ

Mortel!!!I've been riding in Reunion Island, but not in these trails...Only the mega & maxi avalanches trails.
This island is just perfect for a lot of things, except the bulldog shark.
